0:00 both Linus tech tips these guys and acer
0:03 these guys have aged nearly three years
0:06 since we unboxed the predator g a normal acer desktop with an orange accent and a
0:11 basic video card in it in a playground
0:14 and while our sense of humor certainly hasn't gotten any more politically
0:18 correct or sophisticated it's possible
0:21 given the improvement in their monitor and laptop lineups that acer has managed
0:27 to grow up a little in that time let's find out this
0:32 is the predator g6
0:42 the master case 5 by cooler master gives you the freedom to truly make your
0:46 mid-tower pc case your own with a variety of modular parts and accessories
0:50 check out the link in the video description to learn more
0:53 the first big improvement was immediately apparent when i opened the
0:57 box i still remember back when i did a competitive analysis purchase of an
1:02 alienware gaming machine back at ncix and the mouse it came with was so light
1:07 i wasn't even sure there was anything inside it acer on the other hand blew me
1:11 away here by including a steelseries sensei raw gaming mouse and an apex raw
1:16 gaming keyboard i thought maybe it was a special reviewers package or something
1:21 like that but it's not if you buy this model of predator g6 and a predator
1:27 monitor you're going to be ready to go add headset and you are gaming which
1:32 leads me perfectly i guess to the physical tour of the machine itself the
1:35 overall appearance of the g6 is
1:39 going to be a love it or hate it thing the side panels have their imo
1:43 attractive predator logo with a really nice
1:46 mesh texture to them that's solid on the right and mostly solid on the left but
1:50 actually perforated above the GPU and CPU area a nice touch as far as the
1:56 front and the top are concerned i think acer was going for like an overlapping
2:01 armor plate thing but they ended up with more again imo of
2:05 an armadillo look though your mileage may vary they've embedded some practical
2:10 elements amidst the plates though from the bottom to the top we've got a
2:14 retractable headphone holder front i o with two usb 3.0 ports front audio jacks
2:19 and a usb 2 based sd card reader above
2:22 that we can press on the right right here whoa look at that and we got
2:26 ourselves a little quick drive upgrade bay that will work toollessly with a
2:30 three and a half inch drive or accept a two and a half inch drive with screws
2:34 then moving up further we've got on the two thousand dollar trim model a blu-ray
2:40 reader with a dvd writer combo unit thing leaving only the power button
2:44 above that oh wait
2:48 maybe there's more this is what it looks like it's the return of
2:52 the turbo button but this isn't your mom's turbo button this one is different
2:58 instead of just being a boring button well it lights up and not just itself
3:04 but the entire machine the front and side panels when you activate it the
3:08 other difference is that it toggles the system between a stock all core four
3:13 gigahertz turboed speed and an overclocked 4.6 gigahertz turboed speed
3:18 rather than toggling between stock speed and a dramatic underclock to improve
3:22 compatibility with older programs these one-touch overclocking tools can
3:27 be a little bit flaky in my experience though especially if the manufacturer
3:31 tries to do any more than a token couple percent overclock but in practice the
3:37 predator g6 was stable with the overclock so i resolved at this point to
3:42 keep it on for my testing so let's rip her open and talk guts now shall we with
3:47 the plastic cover removed from the back and the side panels off the g6 chassis
3:52 bears a lot more similarity to that last predator machine i mean this is a very
3:58 basic steel chassis with a cool skin over it folks it has a rear 92
4:03 millimeter fan two internal hard drive or SSD mounts one of which has a two
4:07 terabyte seagate drive in it and so that's about it for expansion and no
4:11 cable management to speak of but it does do a few things right it accepts a
4:16 standard matx motherboard and atx power supply which by the way is a 750 watt
4:22 fsp80 plus unit good show acer and has
4:25 tons of room for any single graphics card that you could want in the bottom
4:30 on the motherboard is a core i7 6700k
4:33 quad core 16 gigs of dual channel ddr4 RAM the four slots allow this to be
4:38 expanded to 64 gigs in the future a wi-fi module with antennas leading up to
4:43 the front of the chassis a 256 gig msata
4:46 SSD and two pci express 1x expansion
4:49 slots with a very basic rear i o i'm
4:52 actually disappointed by the lack of audio jacks here and then finally the
4:57 centerpiece of the build the gtx 980
5:00 graphics card that makes this machine NVIDIA vr ready certified
5:05 so those are some pretty bad aspects right and if you were paying attention
5:10 you probably noticed the same thing i noticed there's only one case fan that 92
5:15 millimeter affair in the rear so let's direct our attention now to cooling
5:20 performance here's a look at our baseline idle CPU
5:24 temps and here's a look at whoa
5:27 with ida 64 running a burn-in test it
5:30 took only five minutes for my CPU to reach very uncomfortable temperatures
5:35 and this is in our unheated warehouse and while i understand that acer is
5:40 expecting this feature to be used for gaming which is not going to pin the CPU
5:44 at 100 the way this artificial workload does many gamers interested in a core i7
5:50 might also be interested in heavy workloads like video creation and they
5:55 may not want their CPU touching 80 to 90
5:58 degree temperatures under load so i pressed the button again to disable the
6:03 overclock which brought things right back into comfortable territory and you
6:07 can make the argument that the management utility that comes pre-loaded
6:11 does include an option to crank the fans to max which works by the way to tame
6:15 the beast the problem is that it makes the machine unpleasantly loud and i'm a
6:19 little disappointed then in acer's validation process for this feature and
6:23 i hope that they can find a better middle ground between thermal throttling
6:27 and sounding like a hair dryer with some kind of a software update with all that
6:32 griping about thermals aside though it's not like they screwed up anything
6:36 royally in terms of performance i mean when i'm not using an artificial
6:39 workload to make it throttle it performs exactly like you'd expect from a machine
6:44 of this specification and they did a good job i think of putting together a
6:48 package that makes sense an SSD boot drive and a hard drive for mass storage
6:52 is a great solution but since my job is to give constructive
6:56 criticism while the pre-installed software was almost entirely unoffensive
7:01 with some notable good inclusions like acer's surprisingly useful system
7:05 toolbox steam and firefox i feel like
7:09 for everyday joe users the two drive solution could be a bit more seamless i
7:13 mean here's an idea how about having Windows storage folders and a steam
7:17 library on the hard drive out of the factory i mean the number of times that
7:21 i have gotten service calls from people who are out of hard drive space but have
7:26 an empty drive or worse a partition is
7:30 staggering which leads us to the conclusion the g6 strikes me as a
7:35 reflection of overall improvements to the pre-built pc industry that were
7:40 mostly borrowed from diy casemakers and
7:43 enthusiasts better upgradeability solid
7:46 power supply included rubber grommets on the hard drive mounts legitimately
7:50 high-end video card options etc as opposed to some sort of
7:55 forward thinking product i mean lenovo king of exciting computers right has a
8:00 similar spec machine for a little bit cheaper which gives you a few bucks then
8:05 to pick up some equivalent peripherals making it pretty darn similar i mean if
8:09 you're willing to go to a boutique builder like can i buy power rather than
8:13 a tier one then there are definitely better values out there and i'm ignoring
8:18 the diy market here as well intentionally since they aren't really
8:22 the target for a product like this so does that mean that the g6 is bad
8:27 no it's not it just looked really cool from the outside and
8:32 then failed to really excite me once i lifted
8:35 up the hood so now with that out of the way we can
8:39 take a moment to talk about curiosity stream the world's first ad-free
8:44 non-fiction streaming service founded by john hendricks the founder of discovery
8:48 communications i checked it out recently and it's got actually tons of videos
8:53 they've got over 1200 videos with a wide variety of science and technology
8:59 content so they've got exclusive interviews and lectures they've got
9:03 documentaries they've got just kind of
9:06 they've got some kid-friendly stuff as well they support a variety of platforms
9:10 including a web app roku Android which
9:13 is where i've been using it on my phone iOS chromecast
9:17 amazon fire amazon kindle apple tv is on
9:20 the way but of course that is subject to a change
9:24 some of their content includes next world which features mishiyukaku talking
9:28 about the future of technology so virtual reality artificial intelligence
9:33 you know these kinds of big questions as well as the human face of big data which
9:38 is currently exclusively streaming on curiosity stream and just premiered in
9:42 late february i checked out a really cool one on this like submersible craft
9:47 that was found rusting away in a shipyard actually here
9:50 in vancouver which i thought was really neat that was the first
9:55 manned 30-day voyage where these guys were like sealed into this capsule for a
10:00 full 30 days and actually led to and i didn't realize this either a lot of the
10:05 uh best practices that are followed for things like space missions even today so
10:10 really cool stuff and anyone can sign up for a free 30-day trial all you got to
10:14 do is use promo code Linus then to save 15
10:18 on your first three months after that so check out the link in the video
10:22 description all right so thanks for watching guys if
10:25 this video sucked you know what to do but if it was awesome get subscribed hit
10:29 that like button or even consider supporting us directly by using our affiliate code to shop at amazon
10:33 instructions for which are up here buying a cool shirt like this one or
10:37 with a direct monthly contribution through our community forum which by the
10:40 way is full of all kinds of useful helpful awesome freaking people who can
10:44 help you with your tech stuff now that you're done doing all that stuff you're
10:47 probably wondering what to watch next so click that little button in the top
10:51 right corner to check out the video where i
10:55 have like a four thousand dollar server that can accept eight graphics cards
10:59 it's freaking sick it's sick i tell you
