0:00 recently we had a look at how you could piece together a pretty darn powerful
0:04 eight core gaming rig on the cheap with some older server Hardware namely a pair
0:09 of quad core Intel xeons and some server grade ECC ddr2 RAM and a little bit of
0:16 creative modding but some of the fans made it pretty compelling that there was
0:20 an argument for hey instead of drilling a block of wood to use as a motherboard
0:24 Mount and loing off a part of a shiny gtx980 why not just use an 8 AMD desktop
0:31 CPU instead indeed why not stay tuned to
0:35 find out how our server style Frankenstein rig held up against an AMD
0:48 fx8350 freshbooks is the super simple invoicing solution that lets you get
0:52 organized save time and get paid faster click now to try it for free so while
0:57 the twin Zeon processors the ECC RAM and the Server Motherboard only set us back
1:02 around $150 total AMD's most popular 8 core CPU
1:07 the fx8350 is currently going for
1:10 170 by itself on new EG and not all that
1:14 much cheaper on the used Market with cheaper am3 plus motherboards going for
1:18 around 50 bucks on the same site and 16 GB of DDR3 memory going for about 60 all
1:26 of this retaining much of its value on the used Market you're looking at nearly
1:29 double the cost for the desktop AMD platform but of course you do get quite
1:34 a bit extra functionality for this added cost even lower-end currently available
1:39 motherboards support now standard features like USB 3.0 multiple PCI
1:44 Express slots and 6 gbit per second SATA
1:47 connections by contrast our server board only has a measly pair of USB 2.0 ports
1:53 I mean even the freaking Raspberry Pi has more than that one PCIe slot making
1:58 any further expansion impossible once you stick in a graphics card and only
2:02 support sat of revision 2 speeds we also
2:07 needed to separate EPS power connectors with the server board we used so you may
2:12 need to find a power supply that has a pair of these as well and obviously you
2:16 get the luxury of being able to use your choice of modern CPU Cooler in a real
2:21 actual ATX case unless you like that sort of cyberpunk shady ghetto style
2:26 piece of tech that was just thrown together kind of look which honestly I I
2:30 must admit I kind of have a soft spot for so I would understand but all of
2:33 that aside performance is what matters most and we put both of our eight core
2:37 setups through a full battery of comparison tests if you're curious about
2:41 the exact parts we use for these test benches you can see them on the screen
2:45 right now first up we looked at transfer speeds on our Samsung 850 Pro SSD using
2:51 the Blackmagic disc speed tests on our AMD bench we got a healthy 513 megabyte
2:58 pers second read speed and a 465 mbes
3:02 per second right about what we'd expect from a modern SATA 3 Drive however our
3:07 server board was a completely different story as on it we mustered only
3:12 134 and 128 megabytes per second on read and WR
3:17 respectively even though the board is supposed to support say to two speeds of
3:21 up to 300 megabytes per second through its connectors although there may be a
3:26 way to make this work more quickly we couldn't find anything in the bio that
3:30 would allow us to increase the speed there seems to be one Post online where
3:34 one dude said that he modified it to work but doesn't actually say how so we
3:38 might be able to chalk this up to another one of those server Parts can be
3:42 screwy and hard to configure moments that said if you do want to try out the
3:46 Server Motherboard as a gaming rig concept you might want to take the time
3:50 to locate a board that you know will support SATA 3 speeds as the system was
3:55 noticeably a little slower in common tasks like browsing through Windows
3:59 Explorer moving on to synthetic benchmarks we saw the AMD desktop setup
4:03 perform 40 to 60% faster in a Seuss real
4:06 bench Suite which includes image editing video rendering and multitasking
4:11 elements the fx8350 based system also
4:14 beat on our dual zon setup by about 18%
4:18 in the cinebench CPU test and also won the open Gil test which renders a scene
4:22 of a car chase by nearly 40 FPS but
4:27 would this translate to huge gains in real world gaming situations the two
4:31 systems didn't show too much of a difference in our Far Cry 3 Far Cry 4
4:35 sorry and Crisis 3 benchmarks with our AMD desktop bench only gaining between 1
4:40 and 3 frames per second at 4K however
4:44 when we switch to City's skylines a much more CPU bound title the difference was
4:49 massive our fx8350 system nearly doubled
4:53 the performance of our dual xon setup so with these results does it still make
4:57 sense to go for the cheaper server setup if you can get your hands on them it
5:01 might if all you're doing with your PC is gaming and you want to keep your
5:04 platform costs as low as possible and allocate more of your budget to
5:07 something like say a nice graphics card of course that depends on what games
5:12 you're going to be playing so don't forget that too as CPU bound titles will
5:15 see a significant performance hit on the old server Hardware Although our fx8350
5:21 platform costs about twice the price we got roughly double the performance in
5:24 City skylines offsetting the additional cash you'd have to Fork out add in a
5:29 significantly faster performance and other CPU intensive tasks and even
5:33 general computing as well as many more connectivity options and a more
5:38 traditional platform with desktop Class 8 core processor and it looks well worth
5:42 the additional cost especially if you won't have to spend a ton of time
5:46 configuring a server board which isn't exactly designed to be user friendly all
5:51 the time but let's be real for a moment if the tinkerer in you really wants to
5:56 try out this kind of a cost cutting challenge that's awesome go for it or if
5:59 an 8350 just isn't in your budget it's certainly possible to have a satisfying
6:04 gaming experience on some old Zeon for a really really good price just remember
6:09 that it might take a little bit more patience upes has a wide variety of
6:14 powered standing desks available on upd des.com what almost all of them have in
6:18 common is the highquality dual motor electronically controlled height adjust
6:22 system that lets you either manually raise or lower your desktop surface or
6:27 pre-program three different heights for sit stand and or maybe for riding on a
6:31 bike or a walk- on treadmill the one I've been using since up desk set us up
6:35 is the large sized squared up it's been a great solution for me due to needing a
6:39 corner desk and I actively use the different profile modes as I have back
6:43 problems and being able to rotate between sitting and standing is great so
6:47 whether you're trying to just get into the habit of Shifting positions periodically or if you want to get some
6:51 real health benefits out of your new desk by putting a treadmill or stationary bike under it check out upes
