0:00 bits and bites absolutely delici oh my God this is cat
0:05 food no but seriously bits and bites are
0:09 the units to measure computer data bit
0:12 is the smallest form of data and it's basically like an onoff switch it can be
0:17 either a zero or a one but that's it
0:20 even basic information like a letter of the alphabet cannot be expressed as a
0:25 bit in spite of the name alphabet you'll need a bite which is a series of eight
0:30 bits in order to express even something as simple as a character of text you can
0:34 think of it as eight on orof switches which can be configured in any number of
0:38 different combinations to represent different values often a letter of the
0:42 alphabet or another character for example this is TQ for Techquickie
0:47 represented in 16 bits or two bytes and
0:51 this is a smiley face represented in 16 bits or two bytes but you're a
0:55 sophisticated guy you might need to store data that's more complicated than
0:59 a single letter of the alphabet and the simple answer is you're going to need
1:02 more bites by the way these taste awful for example even a text document that
1:06 contains only three characters would need more than one bite of data to
1:11 represent it that is why we have prefixes like kilo Mega and Giga to
1:16 refer to much larger file sizes I mean otherwise in casual conversation we'd
1:21 have to say things like oh hey man how big is that song Oh around uh
1:27 3,521 36 62 bytes or you could just say
1:32 3 and 1/2 Megs so when do you use bits
1:35 and when do you use bytes the general rule that I use is bits for interface
1:40 speed bytes for data storage so here's an example your internet service
1:44 provider has a plan for you that's 100 megabit per second and you have a file
1:49 that's 100 megabytes don't get confused
1:52 you're not going to be able to download a 100 megabyte file size in 1 second
1:56 with that plan it'll actually take more like about a seconds because 100 megabit
2:02 is around 12.5 megabytes where it gets
2:06 really confusing sometimes they represent
2:11 speeds in bytes too like when you transfer files on your computer from one
2:15 folder to another one so the best way to keep from getting confused is to follow
2:19 a couple of simple rules number one rule is the Big B anytime it's denoted is for
2:25 btes the bigger unit and a small B is
2:28 for bits which is the smaller unit big letter Big Unit small letter small unit
2:33 and rule number two is you can use this simple and approximate very approximate
2:39 not correct conversion where you take a number that you read in bits and you
2:45 divide it by 10 to get bytes for example that internet service provider that
2:49 advertises 100 megabit per second in theory 12.5 megabytes not going to
2:53 happen in the real world due to network protocol inefficiencies or any other
2:57 snafus that might occur in the ad IED speed so it'll probably be more like 10
3:02 megabytes per second even if your service provider is being honest about
3:05 their speeds speaking of reading this video is brought to you by audible.com
3:09 I've heard well and experienc that you can download eBooks from the megabits
3:15 actually no I'm just kidding you can actually download books from the internet you can listen to them whether
3:19 it's on your smartphone on your couch in your car while you're commuting or whatever else the case may be you can
3:24 even get a free ebook by visiting audible.com tequ where you can download
3:29 pretty much anything you want I meant to read this book and instead what I ended
3:33 up doing is picking up the ebook because even though it'll take about twice as
3:37 long to listen to this book as it will to read it I don't have the time to sit
3:41 down and dedicate to reading it whereas I can listen to it while I'm doing other
3:44 things the other cool thing about this one is the fact that the audible ebook
3:47 is read by Jim Collins himself which means he added a little bit of insight
3:52 and tailored the experience to the listening version as opposed to the
3:56 reading version which was very very cool now I'd like to change things up a
4:00 little bit for my next ebook and I'd love for you guys to check out the audible bestsellers list and leave your
4:05 suggestions in the comments in this video I would like to try something that
4:08 is entertaining as opposed to business oriented and I'd like to try something
4:12 that was read by someone other than the author so that I can have that
4:15 experience as well and as always guys
4:18 don't forget to like this video share this video If you enjoyed it and don't
