0:00 on episode five of holy sh we've got a
0:04 computer case so epic that it had to be
0:08 delivered on a pallet rather than via
0:12 normal means so of course we've brought with us the only tool suitable to open
0:16 such a thing chopsticks
0:30 the GTX 980 TI VR Edition from EVGA
0:33 provides an industry-leading Graphics experience as well as a 5 and a/4 inch
0:38 Bay with easy access inputs for your VR device learn more at the link in the
0:42 video description okay well that was obviously
0:47 completely stupid let's go with the more traditional knife to open this baby up
0:52 so inside this box is actually more than
0:57 just a computer case in fact there's a
1:00 case a power supply and a motherboard yes my friends
1:06 this is the first time we've ever had a chance to check out one of super micro's
1:11 barebones server units that they sell
1:15 but this one is very special one that I
1:18 wish I'd known about a month ago when I was trying to do the seven Gamers 1 CPU
1:22 project and the only way that I could figure out to put seven graphics cards
1:27 into a single computer was to water cool the whole blood with all this like
1:31 custom nonsense and I had to find the one motherboard on Earth that would work
1:36 etc etc etc no my friends there was an
1:39 easy way to do it all along all I had to
1:42 do was get one of these bad
1:48 boys oh cool they actually like pre-modded it for me so let's let's pull
1:54 this out let's pull this out check this out check this
1:58 out oh yes my friends yes my friends
2:02 that is exactly what it looks like the
2:06 entire rear of a foru chassis taken up
2:11 entirely by expansion slots all right my
2:15 friends so let's take a quick tour of
2:18 this absolute Beast of a monster this is
2:24 I'm going to read it off it the super micro 4027
2:28 gr- t which actually which actually
2:32 isn't the right thing they told me they were sending the trt the one with the 10
2:37 GB network interface built and maybe
2:41 they included like an upgrade module or something so first of all this is cool
2:45 it includes four 1,600 wat power supplies yes
2:51 friends that is for all kinds of crazy power delivery along with redundancy
2:56 which is important in any kind of a server environment you can see there are
3:00 these tiny slim little units here let's
3:03 uh let's see if we can read this baby yeah this is the DPS 1600 CB uh so the
3:09 output is actually 1,600 Watts max if oh
3:14 this is interesting I have never seen a discrepancy like that before so at 120
3:20 volt input it's 1,000 Watts Max and at 240 volt input it is 1,600 Watts
3:27 Max very very interesting so I'm going
3:30 to have to make sure I run this baby on 240 volt input but in the meantime let's
3:35 see if super micro included like an upgrade module kit or something like
3:39 that uh these are our rails these are
3:42 those really nice rails that I like so we're going to go ahead and rail mount this baby in the rack and then in here
3:47 I'm hoping to find
3:56 um well nothing
4:02 apparently uh
4:06 okay uh okay well let's open it up then
4:10 I guess oh but first no a tour of the
4:16 front so there's more to this there are
4:20 more tricks up this Baby's sleeves than just a bunch of video cards so This
4:25 Server will actually be taking the place of two servers because in addition to
4:30 accepting up to eight dual slot video cards it can also handle with these 2
4:36 and 1/2 in sleds 24 ssds so this will be
4:40 completely taking over wanic server duties in addition to being the new
4:45 output render station that we never actually properly finished because we
4:50 were trying to combine that one's duties with our inest station and that ended up
4:54 causing instability issues due to different versions of Adobe Premiere
4:58 from different years operating at same time long story anyway it was kind of
5:02 ugly and we are looking for a better way to do this so tooless uh top it looks
5:08 like let's find out if we can get this baby off oh no we need to unscrew some
5:12 things so it's only it only pretends to be
5:15 tooless check out this modification that
5:18 spoiler is actually there for a reason and I will explain it in a little while
5:25 here oh yes that that is
5:30 fun so uh here let's try and let's try
5:33 and sort these babies out a little bit see what we got see what we got going on
5:37 here so this motherboard
5:40 supports two LGA 20113 CPUs so we're
5:45 going to be putting our two 18 core 2699 v3s in here for a total of 36 cores and
5:51 on top of that it supports a total of 12
5:55 dim slots you can see they were testing it they had uh looks like 16 dims in
6:01 here before they sent it to me so 12 dim slots per CPU for a total of
6:07 244 dim slots that means with the 32 gig
6:10 dims that Kingston sent us for seven Gamers one CPU we could
6:15 put 32 time 24 whatever that works out
6:19 too inside here this is another really
6:22 cool feature that I wish would make its way to the desktop check out these
6:26 fans these are uh no these are not the
6:30 counter spinning fan so these are just regular old 92 mm fans except for one
6:34 thing do you notice that I just pulled it out where was the
6:38 connector servers have had this forever
6:42 hot swap fan so you just thunk them in and boom look at this you've got little
6:46 slots all over the place here for all these different fan connectors check
6:51 this out and you can see they've actually got two stacks of them one in
6:56 front of the other in order to give these puppies pretty much unlimited
7:02 static pressure so they're pulling all that ventilation in uh from these holes
7:07 in the front here whoop hold on oh try not to drop this from these holes in the
7:11 front here as well as through where
7:15 those SSD mounts go so they got to have a ton of static pressure because these
7:19 puppies are not just you know cooling some run-of-the-mill computer we're
7:23 talking 36 processing cores a bunch of RAM and up to yes this is where life
7:30 gets really interesting up to eight
7:34 graphics cards 1 2 3 4 1 2 three four
7:38 Each of which can be dual slot and then in addition to that it can handle
7:42 another three expansion cards of whatever type you desire so I actually
7:48 guess nothing would prevent you from putting 10 in here if you really really
7:53 wanted to which is um which is sort of
7:57 sort of bananas so let's go ahead and uh see what it'll look like with all those
8:02 installed okay you want to come with me while I go retrieve graphics cards all
8:06 right so uh let's pick some video cards shall we let's go with uh what do we got
8:11 here I don't know some kind of 290 or 390 or something all right what else we
8:16 got here ooh a GTX 580 sure thing no
8:20 problem what else we got gtx980 yeah
8:24 let's take one of those and uh ooh a GTX
8:28 780 Ti that sounds pretty good we got a good uh good representation of the
8:34 market share of these two graphics card companies all right take these back and
8:38 get them installed don't trip one really
8:42 cool thing I want to point out before we get any further in though is that most
8:47 of what you see up here is actually just
8:50 like like a like a dummy board like this is like a daughter board it's not
8:54 there's not a ton of logic on it actually um it installs into the
8:59 motherboard which is below see down here
9:03 using it looks like four hard PCB
9:06 bridges down here and then that's what does all the controlling so it's
9:10 actually all mapped out for you so here's CPU 1 here's CPU 2 and then all
9:16 of these are labeled right here so this is cpu1 slot one PCIe 3.01 16x cpu1 slot
9:23 10 okay well numbering doesn't make a ton of sense to me so far but it goes 1
9:28 10 9 8 uh uh 7 six 5 anyway so it says CPU 1
9:37 cpu2 and it's all kind of spelled out for you like that so let's start
9:40 installing video cards AMD and
9:45 NVIDIA living together in Perfect
9:49 Harmony I don't know how that song goes but I think you guys get the reference I
9:54 don't even know if I'm going to be able to find enough video cards to fill this thing up this ridiculous okay so before
10:00 we put any more in I want to take a short break and give you guys a better
10:04 appreciation of the scale of what we're dealing with here this is a normal ATX
10:10 motherboard it can fit four graphics cards total if you include one here and
10:16 if you install one in the very bottom slot and have it overhang the bottom of the board so it look a little something
10:20 like that this is what we're dealing with
10:24 here it's ridiculous so let's keep the
10:27 Ridiculousness up let's put some more graffics CS in let's put one here wow
10:32 that's a long card but it fits just fine
10:36 let's put one here let's put one
10:40 here oh balls this is a stupid modified
10:44 one from scrapyard Wars that I'll just
10:47 move it see it's not a standard width but that's okay there's so many
10:52 different spots for graphics cards server stuff all about that convenience
10:57 no PCI Express locks you want to pull a card out boom you pull it out no big
11:02 deal right
11:06 there okay lonus but what about that
11:09 thing you promised us before you said you'd explain why this thing is a
11:12 freaking humpback whale now just because we can install you know 69 90s like
11:17 crazy long cards like this doesn't mean
11:21 that you can install anything you want in a system like this and we are
11:24 somewhat Limited in terms of the height of our graphics cards because one of the
11:31 U's so U is your vertical vertical
11:34 measurement of height for a system like this one of the U's is taken up by all
11:37 those power supplies here at the back with only three left for graphics cards
11:42 that means any cards that are taller than standard are not going to fit
11:46 within that 4u enclosure size what that
11:49 also means is that any cards that are
11:52 designed with their power plugs coming out of the top of the card like this
11:56 would interfere with a flat top panel which is why we got this modified
12:01 humpback one there we go that is going to take up
12:06 a little bit of space above our server so let's go ahead and make sure that
12:11 that actually fits okay yes that fits
12:14 perfectly with all of our graphics cards
12:17 love it so we've got big plans for this thing we're going to be doing a video
12:21 where we explore uh who makes the best GPU for video encoding in Premiere so
12:27 we're going to do like an AMD versus NVIDIA to head and show a bunch of
12:30 different classes of GPU find out if you even need a super powerful one we're
12:33 going to be doing one where we have eight game streams running off of a
12:37 single machine at a time that is going to be flipping sick and finally we are
12:43 going to be maybe actually you guys let me know if you want to see this but
12:46 maybe doing a Showcase of the final build that I do in here with the 24 ssds
12:52 maybe it'll be like a follow-up holy episode rather than a normal release uh
12:57 with all the ssds as well as all the graphics cards that we end up putting
13:02 into it and on that subject ifixit.com
13:06 your complete DIY electronics repair solution from their
13:10 19,000 free step-by-step repair guides to their huge inventory of replacement
13:14 parts and tools I fix it has got your repair needs covered they've got all
13:18 kinds of great stuff I use all their stuff all the time I actually do people
13:22 are always like lonus I fix it product placement oh right there no actually I
13:26 was I was just using it today's highlight is the their all new
13:30 completely reimagined Protech tool kit it now includes their new 64-bit driver
13:35 kit which replaced the former 54 bit driver kit meaning fewer roadblocks if
13:39 you don't have the right bit it's held in with magnets now the casing is more
13:44 durable they've actually got some new prying tools and all the things that we
13:48 have come to expect in the old protect tool kit that are super handy whether
13:52 it's a metal spudger or an estd safety strap it's all in there and the best
13:57 part is it's backed by iFix its lifetime warranty but wait there's more there's a
14:02 new best part if you guys head over to the link in the video description
