0:11 nc.com welcome to day four of our computex 2013 coverage powered by WD
0:18 remember guys we've got some really cool giveaways that we're going to be doing
0:22 after the show the more you watch our Western Digital content here at computex
0:26 the more we get to giveaway so check out the details in the video description you
0:31 can also get 15% off a WD drive if you
0:34 live in the US or in the EU and that
0:38 only lasts for a little while here during the show so let's talk about WD
0:42 black this isn't exactly A New Concept by any stretch of the imagination but
0:45 what it is is as a 3 and 1/2 in drive
0:49 it's the only one that's ever really been positioned as a performance leading
0:52 drive so what makes it different from something like a blue or what
0:55 differentiated it back then it was all about the tuning and Twee and things
1:00 like putting in dual processors in order to make it perform even better at the
1:05 time than a than an equivalent 7200 RPM drive and this is aligned with that
1:10 concept that it's not all about RPM because how does it perform better if it
1:14 spins at the same speed well it's more complicated than that so what is a black
1:18 drive for well it's for people who don't want to worry about their Drive dying
1:21 for one thing it comes with a 5-year warranty which for a consumer hard drive
1:26 is actually the highest available so you go ahead you build yourself a system
1:30 with an ASUS tough series board a wd Black Edition drive you throw like you
1:36 know I don't know Corsair memory in there with a lifetime warranty all of a sudden you've got a system where you're
1:41 going to have backing for like 5 years on the main components inside and you
1:45 don't have to worry about them failing it's also still the highest performance
1:49 3 and 1 half in consumer Drive in Western digitals lineup and optimized
1:53 for applications where a lower-end hard drive isn't really appropriate things
1:58 where that extra little bit of performance might make a lot of sense things like a scratch disc if you're
2:02 working in Adobe Premiere or after effects or something along those lines
2:05 and where an SSD might not make a ton of sense like a scratch disc I love SSD as
2:10 much as the next person you guys know that but at the end of the day if you're
2:14 if you have you know swap files going back and forth to them or you're using
2:17 it as a scratch and you're writing you know 10 gigs Plus or 10 however much if
2:22 you're writing a ton of data to and from your SSD all the time every day in a
2:27 workstation grade environment there's a very good chance it won't last as long
2:32 as a hard drive because they do have an inherent limited life cycle when it
2:37 comes to rights so let's have a look at what kind of systems you might find a wd
2:41 black in this one here is a Puget systems gaming system it's got a 4 terab
2:46 WD black in it it should be noted that 4 terabyte is the highest capacity in
2:50 Western digital's desktop lineup right now both red and green do top out at 3
2:55 terabytes with blue topping out at 1 Tab and this is well basically to optimize
3:00 things like game load times and no they're not going to be as fast as if
3:04 you put the games on an SSD we all know this but your SSD is probably anywhere
3:09 from 60 gigs to 240 gigs if you bought it sometime in the last few years your
3:13 hard drive is anywhere from 500 gigs to 4 terabytes which means you can fit a
3:17 lot more games on it and here's an example of another similar type of
3:21 system whether it's a gaming machine or a workstation that you might find some
3:26 kind of WD black storage solution and this is the frame Edition leite from
3:31 compet extreme and what's cool about this particular system other than the
3:34 fact that it's great for high performance applications is that it is
3:37 able to passively cool not only everything inside it if you get a good
3:41 angle at this I'm going to go ahead and tilt it over here hopefully I'm not going to like break it or anything but
3:45 check that out it is a very open airflow system and because it is constructed
3:50 from pieces of aluminum you can see that the cooling solution over here for the
3:54 drive because remember blacks do not operate as cool as something like a
3:59 green or a red Drive the cooling solution allows these aluminum pieces to
4:03 go right up against the drive and dissipate the heat passively into the
4:06 rest of the case which leads us to the traditional one if you loved the caviar
4:12 back when WD had that branding then you'll pretty much love the blue because
4:16 it's an extension of it it's only available in capacities up to 1 tbte
4:20 which by today's standards might not seem like for you know the Savvy you
4:25 know developed Market consumer like that impressive especially when the Black is
4:29 a available with up to 4 terab in a single consumer grade device but for
4:34 emerging markets where they don't necessarily have the need for a Nas
4:38 special drive or they don't need a 5mm slim drive or a 7mm slim drive because
4:43 they're not using those kinds of devices yet blue makes a lot of sense because
4:48 here you go the original the original award-winning desktop hard drive quality
4:52 and reliability it's been around forever the technology may not be cutting edge
4:57 but that's almost the beauty of it is that it's not cutting edge it's something that we're very familiar with
5:01 at this point now something you might not be familiar with at this point is
5:06 the fact that not only the blue but every WD hard drive comes with a copy of
5:10 WD acronis True Image comes with it for free I had no idea the fact that I've
5:16 never heard of this was like unbelievable because the great
5:20 thing about a cronis is that it works a lot of the bundled Drive cloning
5:24 software that's out there doesn't work or it's buggy or it crashes or whatever
5:29 else I wouldn't trust it it's powered by chonis yay thumbs up anyway guys don't
5:34 miss any of our computex 2013 coverage and don't forget to check out all of our
5:38 WD videos because the more views we get the more awesome stuff we get to give
5:42 away after the show
