0:06 operating systems which one's the best
0:10 is it uh Windows 7
0:14 macOS Windows 10 Linux
0:17 well we figured why decide
0:22 we built the ultimate cross platform
0:26 workstation running all four of them off
0:29 of a single display and
0:32 seamlessly check out that mouse movement between
0:36 the different os's and this was thanks to some help from our friends at synergy
0:42 who sponsored this video so stay tuned because we are going to
0:46 show you guys how to do it
0:58 all right so let's go over what we've got here first up is our computers so
1:03 this one right here this glass tower has our arcade machine pc running Windows 7
1:09 and there are a lot of reasons that you might still want an older version of
1:14 Windows up and running after you've upgraded to something new
1:18 maybe it's older hardware provides better compatibility with older software
1:23 especially games that don't play nicely with Windows 10 maybe it's just that you
1:28 need Windows 10 for work or school but
1:31 you really love Windows 7 and it's telemetry free styles
1:36 next up we've got our Windows 10 pc now
1:40 Windows 10 supports 4k netflix with the built-in edge browser it's got directx
1:45 12 for the latest games and of course
1:48 pairing the newest hardware with the most current operating system often
1:53 gives you the best driver and accompanying software experience
1:58 now let's change gears a little bit this
2:03 is our macbook pro maybe you moonlight as a dj and you
2:07 prefer the professional audio tools or peripherals that work best or only on
2:14 mac maybe you love final cut maybe you love the tight integration with your
2:19 iphone and your apple watch there are a
2:22 ton of reasons that you might want to have a mac as part of your ultimate
2:26 setup so we worked it in bringing us finally
2:30 to a little mini Intel nook
2:33 this one right here is running Linux ubuntu to be precise so maybe you're a
2:38 programmer who needs to be able to quickly compare different os builds side
2:42 by side maybe you're a data scientist who works primarily in Windows but then
2:47 needs to keep tabs on a Linux machine without ssh or an x maybe some of your
2:52 tools just plain run best on Linux so
2:56 overall the point we were trying to make there wasn't the specific reasons but
3:00 just the fact that there are a lot of reasons that you might want to run
3:05 multiple operating systems and while
3:08 there are a ton of ways to go about this actually
3:12 all of them come with some significant drawbacks so
3:17 a dual boot solution like bootcamp requires a system restart to switch
3:24 a team viewer introduces significant network latency and reduced image
3:29 quality parallels or some other kind of
3:32 virtualization solution gives you limited access to hardware pass-through
3:38 and speaking of hardware a hardware-based kvm can be really
3:43 expensive if you want modern features like
3:47 4k 60 hertz support and it only allows
3:50 you to control one of your os's
3:54 at a time so then let's walk you through how we built our
3:59 setup one of the big pieces of special sauce
4:04 is actually the monitor this is the same lg
4:09 43ud79b that we checked out back in september and we liked it okay at the
4:14 time but we saw it basically as a big
4:17 display a really big display at the time and we hadn't
4:23 fully figured out what we could do with it so it's got four HDMI ports
4:29 two 2.0 and two 1.4 then it also has
4:33 check this out it's also got DisplayPort
4:36 and a usb type-c for input
4:40 and this is cool with four machines plugged in you can arrange those inputs
4:44 in any order you'd like in quadrants
4:48 like this effectively giving you four 21 and a half inch displays and then you
4:52 can choose which one of them is going to output through the monitor speakers now
4:58 if you want to focus in on one thing you can press the full screen button
5:02 here pick whichever one you'd like press the button
5:07 and boom you are switched to that particular input 4k
5:12 60 hertz depending on which one it's compatible with and then if you want to
5:16 switch back we'll just go to here we go picture by
5:20 picture you can just apply the previous settings
5:24 and give it a couple seconds to pick up all the different signals
5:28 and you're going to be back to your quadrants now
5:32 we haven't fully solved the problem yet but this is all the hardware we need but
5:37 here's our here's our current issue our mouse is stuck in ubuntu right now
5:41 because that is where it's plugged in
5:44 this is where synergy 2.0 software comes
5:48 in let's start with Windows the process is the same on both Windows 7 and
5:52 Windows 10. download synergy 2.0 and install it then sign in to activate your
5:58 machine once this is done you'll see a representation of the computer you're
6:02 currently using in this case our arcade
6:05 on the synergy 2.0 app next up is our Windows 10 machine this
6:10 is basically the same procedure but once we're done our setup we'll see our
6:15 arcade machine all ready and then we'll be able to arrange our Windows 10
6:19 machine to line up according to how we've got our displays arranged but wait
6:24 there's more moving over to the mac the process is
6:28 actually just as simple open up the dmg double-click
6:32 login and now we've got three but we're
6:36 still missing the last piece of the puzzle Linux
6:39 Linux can be a bit trickier for our ubuntu 17.10 install we have an easy to
6:46 use deviant package but for those of you running distros that have switched to
6:50 weyland by default like newer versions of ubuntu you need to make sure that you
6:54 log in with xorg enabled otherwise it won't work it's easy enough to work
6:59 around but just a little frustrating and here we are
7:04 now i can do what i showed you in the intro so in this configuration watch
7:09 this i can just move my mouse cursor between the machines seamlessly so over
7:15 here i could uh i could get logged into steam but well okay i matched the enter
7:20 key but you get my point the keyboard actually moves with the mouse so i could
7:25 go to you know oh oh the website's still up
7:30 and check this out copy pasting text between the machines is supported with
7:36 copy pasting files and dragging and dropping files coming in synergy 2.0
7:41 quite shortly and i think the most impressive
7:45 thing is just how quickly and seamlessly the mouse
7:49 switches between the different machines
7:53 cool right a setup like this
7:57 won't be practical for everyone and there are some caveats so let's say you
8:03 wanted to take your macbook with you and you unplug it it does take a moment for
8:09 all the screens to sync up when something you know disconnects or
8:13 reconnects and our ubuntu machine has a
8:17 bit of a tendency to grab the mouse controls even when it's
8:22 not the focus machine but i think there are people out there
8:28 with work areas that are only big enough for a single monitor who might have the
8:33 need to run multiple machines simultaneously like this and for those
8:38 people even with some of the improvements that still need to be made to synergy 2.0
8:43 there is potentially a lot of time and
8:47 effort to be saved here
8:51 but uh Linus i heard on your forum of all places that
8:56 while synergy 2.0 might be prettier with
8:59 brain dead simple setup it's still missing some of the features of synergy
9:03 one and there's no downgrade rights
9:07 yes yes you did hear that so did we
9:10 and so did seamless so while seamless has been working on bringing back the
9:15 much requested tray icon and an on off button which would be essential for a
9:20 configuration like this so that when you full screen you don't have your mouse
9:24 flying off the edges we worked out a deal with them
9:27 where anyone who bought synergy one or
9:31 two with our code the links below our videos
9:34 will get upgrade and downgrade rights
9:38 for free so you can use whichever
9:41 version you prefer and then you can switch whenever you're ready
9:45 bam so check out the link to synergy one or
9:49 two in the video description to get their multi-platform peripheral sharing
9:54 software today for 50 percent off thanks
9:58 to synergy for sponsoring this video
10:01 so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this video you can press that button but if you liked it hit like get
10:07 subscribed or check out the link to where to buy the stuff we featured we'll have the monitor down there we'll have
10:11 synergy down there in the video description also linked in the
10:14 description is our merch store which has cool shirts like this one and our
10:18 community forum which you should totally join
