like many of you I enjoy my privacy on the internet so the constant advances
0:05
over the last few years and the ability to collect massive amounts of personal
0:09
data about me have not really sat that well but is the industry's favorite big
0:15
buzzword right now Big Data all bad or
0:19
are we painting an otherwise potentially very useful tool for the advancement of
0:23
society in a bad light because of one aspect of it first let's discuss what
0:29
Big Data actually is there are many wildly different definitions of big data
0:33
for example while we individuals might Define it as an intrusive threat to our
0:37
society and the overall anonymity of the internet corporations might see it as a
0:42
revolution in data processing and Computing but there are at least a few
0:46
things that everyone can agree on Wikipedia defines Big Data as any
0:51
collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to
0:55
process using onhand database management tools or traditional data processing
1:00
applications I mean that doesn't sound so threatening right so essentially big
1:04
data is just a collection of data so large that each individual becomes an
1:08
insignificant number where whoever is in possession of the data often actually
1:12
can't make meaningful conclusions about any one person from it and many times
1:17
actually the term big data is misused it's turned into a marketing buzzword
1:21
with software and it companies stating that their systems are ready for the
1:26
challenges that big data provides which is a great way to say absolutely nothing
1:30
about the product while still managing to seem important or relevant in the
1:34
current market on top of that as much as many of you guys might not like to hear
1:38
this privacy Advocates tend to misuse the term as well they act as though Big
1:43
Data only describes user data compiled by sites and services when Big Data
1:48
actually encompasses many more types of data like scientific and business data
1:53
sets for example meteorological data from weather stations and Market data
1:58
from Financial exchanges all all around the world now before you burn me at the
2:02
stake for being a secret NSA operative for defending the idea of big data I
2:07
mean how else you think I could afford my awesome Lambo right certainly not
2:10
from that YouTube money let's chat a little bit about when Big Data is an
2:15
issue websites that collect and store data about their users for marketing
2:20
purposes can keep a massive amount of
2:23
your personal information on hand for an indefinite period of time and most of
2:28
the time the data is not not as well secured as they'd like for you to
2:32
believe or personally I'd like to believe it was in addition to that even
2:37
deleting this information from public view often has no impact on their
2:41
ability to store it on their servers so yes it's possible that that one
2:47
embarrassing picture of you from 2008 will live on in the depths of Facebook
2:51
servers Forever This coupled with the massive amount of information sharing
2:56
voluntary or otherwise and data interception that agencies like the NSA
3:00
Carry Out means that your Regional government or I mean really any other
3:03
types of Nefarious characters could potentially have every move you've made
3:08
online on file now for me personally even though I don't do anything illegal
3:12
or even questionably legal on the internet if someone were to go through
3:16
every bit of information from the years that I've been using it and cherry-pick
3:21
certain things to paint me in a negative light I'm sure I could end up looking
3:25
like a pretty bad dude so let's make a
3:28
quick connection here to solidify the idea that we've discussed uh torrenting
3:32
is something that we all know can have an extremely positive impact on the
3:35
world it's one of the greatest forms of information sharing but whenever we hear
3:40
anything about torrenting the topic revolves around piracy and its other
3:44
unsightly aspects discussion about big data is quite similar it's not in itself
3:49
a bad thing it's a driving force for a lot of great Innovations in science
3:53
technology and medicine and yet for the most part we only hear about the
3:57
negatives the main one being the lack of control that we have over our online
4:01
data and the amount of control that large corporate entities do have over it
4:06
so don't blame big data for creating the need to protect your privacy online
4:10
blame the companies who collect store and most importantly use it
4:14
inappropriately speaking of blame you know whose fault it is that we have the
