0:00 Still a lot to celebrate.
0:01 This is a lot of phone for the money
0:03 and I'm gonna tell you all about it.
0:05 This video is sponsored by Honor.
0:17 So really, Honor's deal has kind of been the same
0:20 ever since the brand launched
0:22 and it's all about sort of more phone for your dollar,
0:26 which isn't to say that you like get more phones,
0:28 although, I mean, if it's, you know,
0:31 a quarter to a third of the price of a flagship,
0:33 I guess you could actually get more phones for your dollar,
0:36 but most people probably wouldn't do that.
0:37 They would just buy one.
0:39 And anyway, I don't know the exact price of this yet.
0:41 So I do know the price of the 8X Max, maybe in the yen,
0:46 but how well that translates into US dollars
0:49 is yet to be known.
0:51 So it's probably somewhere in the 250 to 350 US dollars
0:55 range and what you get for your money is looking pretty good
0:59 because especially if you're into the whole phone
1:02 as a fashion statement thing,
1:03 with the Honor 10 and with the 8X,
1:05 they have put a lot of work
1:07 into making their devices really stand out,
1:10 which is kind of funny
1:11 because you think about how upset Apple was
1:13 all those years ago about,
1:15 oh, everyone's ripping off
1:16 the plain black rectangle visual design of the iPhone.
1:21 And then now, you know, whether it's red or blue or,
1:25 you know, kind of iridescent colors or whatever it is,
1:29 phone manufacturers are going out of their way
1:30 to not look like a plain black rectangle.
1:34 But viewers of this channel are probably less concerned
1:36 with what it looks like
1:37 on the outside and more concerned
1:39 with what's going on on the inside.
1:41 First, though, I should probably mention
1:43 the AI camera from the Honor 10 is back.
1:47 So even though this uses a lower spec Kirin processor,
1:51 the AI functionality,
1:52 which is to say the intelligent battery saving
1:55 and object recognition,
1:57 so whether it's a landscape or an animal, person, food,
2:01 whatever the case may be, that is back.
2:03 So they'll be trying to optimize the image based on that.
2:05 We've got a rear fingerprint sensor.
2:07 Then back around to the front.
2:09 So what's kind of cool about this particular processor,
2:13 so this is the Kirin 710,
2:16 is that it actually uses almost the same CPU cores
2:21 as the 970.
2:23 So it's still got an octa-core processor
2:25 with four stronger ones and four weaker ones,
2:28 but it does have a downgraded GPU.
2:32 So how much that translates to actual performance, though,
2:36 I mean, hey.
2:37 What's better than just firing up an actual game
2:40 and seeing how it runs?
2:41 So I'm gonna whip up PUBG here and see how that goes.
2:46 The way that I see it,
2:47 your player should always be naked
2:49 because it is the mark of how well you're doing in the match,
2:53 how much good gear you can steal from other people.
2:55 I'm actually so glad that the trend to,
2:59 if you have to have bottom firing speakers,
3:01 instead of having it on this side,
3:02 where you're much more likely to be cupping it
3:04 with your palm,
3:05 I'm glad that the trend is to put
3:07 them on this side now.
3:08 Oh, speaking of which,
3:09 there's a headphone jack,
3:10 if you're into that sort of thing.
3:11 It uses micro USB for charging,
3:14 and then there's a bottom-mounted speaker there.
3:17 Oh, I think there's someone to fight up here.
3:19 Oh, this sucks.
3:20 So I'm in the red zone.
3:22 Oh, is someone shooting at me?
3:24 Oh, dang it.
3:26 Where's this loser?
3:28 Why not kill me?
3:30 Did I get him?
3:32 I wanna run this guy down.
3:34 Where he at?
3:40 It's actually pretty loud.
3:42 Oh, I was heavily injured by bombs.
3:44 Oh, I'm still...
3:47 Why do I...
3:47 Whoa, why is it all that green gas
3:49 that comes out when I die?
3:51 So while gaming isn't necessarily a focus for this device,
3:55 it didn't get crazy warm,
3:57 and it was playable,
3:59 even if not the smoothest frame rates.
4:02 So not a bad showing for something
4:04 that's really more about beefy CPU,
4:07 and less about GPU.
4:09 Also, expansion options are a nice touch here.
4:11 Check this out.
4:12 So we've got micro SD expansion,
4:15 which Honor says is good
4:16 for up to 400 gigs and two SIMs.
4:19 And unlike some other devices out there,
4:21 none of them are combo slots.
4:23 So you can install all of those things at the same time.
4:27 So I'm going to throw my SIM
4:29 and my 512 gig micro SD in here.
4:32 512 gigs, it's only rated to 400,
4:34 but yeah, we'll see what happens.
4:36 Oh, I was worried there.
4:37 It said unsupported SD card on the notification.
4:41 Check that out.
4:42 But then you just have to format it.
4:47 Hopefully there's nothing important on it.
4:48 So even though the official support is only 400 gigs,
4:51 once again, our 512 gig card is supported.
4:57 Dang, so you can change the default location,
4:59 internal storage is currently blah, blah, blah, et cetera.
5:02 All requires a restart,
5:04 but you can actually change the default storage location
5:06 to your SD card.
5:07 That's pretty cool.
5:08 Probably not necessary,
5:09 since it comes in either 64 gigs or 128 gigs,
5:12 but it's nice to have the option
5:14 if you're a total data hoarder.
5:16 So now the next thing I wanna see
5:19 is their face unlock uses AI now, apparently,
5:24 to adapt for changing conditions, to lighting,
5:28 changes to kind of the face you're making.
5:30 So what I wanna do is see if we can throw it
5:34 for a bit of a loop here.
5:35 So under normal conditions,
5:39 okay, that was pretty quick.
5:41 You can tell from the lock at the top here.
5:44 Okay, yep, cool.
5:47 Now, why don't we do this?
5:49 Why don't we like kill one of the lights
5:51 or a couple of the lights, actually?
5:52 Let's go ahead and boom, unlock.
5:55 Okay, no problem.
5:58 So you can see it.
5:59 Oh, nevermind.
6:00 I was gonna say it takes a little longer,
6:01 but it didn't on that one.
6:03 Okay, now it's time to start making some faces.
6:10 Got it.
6:17 Took it a little bit that time.
6:22 Ah, got that one pretty easily.
6:24 Not bad, actually.
6:27 Now, of course, facial recognition is less secure
6:30 than some other, I don't know,
6:32 unlock methods, including a fingerprint scanner,
6:35 but it does have one of those as well.
6:37 Something I'd like to see, actually,
6:38 if anyone from Honor's watching,
6:40 is a combo one, like a multi-factor.
6:42 So face scan and fingerprint scan,
6:45 it would be harder to defeat
6:45 if you had to pass both of them at the same time.
6:48 So one of the other key features
6:49 they're really touting for this thing is the AI camera.
6:52 And one thing stood out to me,
6:54 and that's that apparently they're using multiple shots
6:57 and their artificial intelligence engine inside
7:01 in order to sharpen,
7:02 and stabilize low light shots.
7:04 So as you guys can see,
7:06 we're in a fairly dim area of the set.
7:09 So we've got most of the lights off for the WAN Show.
7:12 And you can see it's actually taking more shots.
7:17 That's why that message comes up.
7:19 It's taking more shots after you take your initial picture
7:22 in order to try and sharpen it.
7:24 Here's an interesting thing.
7:25 So here's an iPhone XS Max for comparison.
7:27 Of course, remember,
7:28 this costs three to four times as much or whatever.
7:31 But it does manage to retain more sharpness
7:33 in the image overall.
7:34 And I'd say the color is closer to true life than this.
7:37 This goes for more of like a vibrant poppy look.
7:41 But there's certain elements like that hive text,
7:44 for example,
7:45 that still managed to come through really well
7:47 on this camera.
7:48 So the Razer logo actually has more separation
7:52 on the 8X than it does on the iPhone XS.
7:55 See that?
7:57 Object and scene recognition is back.
7:59 So it identified that it's overcast
8:01 and optimized the conditions for that.
8:02 You can see the sky still has
8:04 some blue in it.
8:05 Maybe more than is actually there,
8:06 but it all depends on what you're after.
8:08 And then also that we're taking a picture of a car.
8:10 And you know, I'm actually curious.
8:12 Do you think it'll recognize my car as a car?
8:14 Hold on, I'm gonna blank it out.
8:15 And then let's see.
8:17 Does it still know that that mess is a car?
8:20 Oh, rip.
8:24 Come on, baby.
8:25 It's like, no, no, this is not a vehicle.
8:29 Nobody should drive this.
8:32 Ouch.
8:32 Every, I was testing this before we turned on the camera.
8:36 There's like other cars behind.
8:37 So see, check this out.
8:39 New car, car.
8:42 Pella's car, also car.
8:47 See, Pella's car, also car.
8:49 Dennis's car.
8:51 Hold on, let's blank it out.
8:54 It's not a car.
8:55 But that, that's a car.
9:02 Drove that thing for years, okay?
9:05 So one of the big things that honors touting with this phone
9:08 is how close the 19 and a half by nine aspect ratio is
9:12 to a cinematic 21 by nine aspect ratio.
9:14 It's like, wow.
9:14 So you do still end up with black bars,
9:18 but not nearly as big as you'd otherwise be dealing with.
9:23 And yes, I'm one of those freaks
9:24 who watches with subtitles on, whatever.
9:27 There's another really cool thing.
9:28 I don't remember exactly how they're doing it,
9:29 but you can see they're actually not that far off
9:32 Apple's chin bar, even though they can't yet.
9:35 I don't remember if it's a patent or an exclusive.
9:38 They can't yet use the same tech
9:39 that Apple's using in the 10 and the 10S.
9:43 So you end up with very little bezel to speak of.
9:45 And you're watching cinematic content.
9:49 So really there's no surprises with the 8X,
9:51 but that's not necessarily a terrible thing.
9:56 So what you're getting is a whole lot of phone for the dollar.
9:59 So it's got four gigs RAM, 3750 milliamp hour battery,
10:02 which with their power optimization from my experience
10:05 should give you a heck of a lot of battery life.
10:08 And of course, strong CPU,
10:10 even if it's kind of a middling GPU
10:13 and all for a very reasonable price.
10:15 Thanks to Honor for not only sponsoring this video,
10:18 but also giving away two Honor phones to two lucky winners
