0:00 High dynamic range or HDR has been the
0:04 next big thing in display technology for
0:08 what seems like forever now I mean hell
0:11 our first video about it is from 2014 and it's hard to find a decent TV
0:17 without that feature these days and yet
0:20 HDR is still far from a mainstream
0:23 feature on PC monitors but are we on the
0:28 cusp of a revolution sitting unknowingly at the bottom of a looming scurve about
0:33 to be forcefully catapulted into a utopian future of super bright H vibrant
0:38 displays well if we were then the Dell up 2718 Q would be that future it's a 4k
0:47 monitor with full hdr10 support and
0:51 1,000 nit Peak brightness let's see if
0:54 it's time to start giving a crap

1:11 description when it comes to looks the ultr sharp 27 4K HDR from Dell lands in
1:16 the Goldilocks zone of understated
1:19 sophistication not too flashy for an office and not too dull for the
1:25 $1500 price tag it's got a space gray
1:29 are we allowed to say that that it's got a gray plastic finish one of the easiest
1:33 to use onscreen displays in recent memory and a generous amount of Mobility
1:38 the stand can tilt swivel pivot and
1:42 whatever that word for adjusting the height is let's go with Elevate but also
1:47 the opposite of that there are two HDMI 2.0 a ports on the back the A is for
1:55 ahdr both regular and mini DisplayPort
1:58 1.4 ports also HDR ready an audio line
2:01 out and a pretty sick integrated USB hub with six USB 3 ports two with fast
2:06 charging and dual uplinks that's so the
2:10 up 278 Q can be used as a KVM switch to
2:15 quickly move between tasks on two systems neat and there's a bunch of
2:19 impressive specs inside the display too it's got a 4K 60 HZ IPS panel with true
2:26 10bit color and an incredible
2:31 384 local dimming zones that is what
2:35 allows it to produce super bright points
2:39 with dark areas right next to them and
2:42 those bright points can be really bright up to a, knits fun fact knit is another
2:50 word for the unit Candela which is equal to the light output of one candle so
2:56 this is basically like the output of a th000 candles in your face sort of
3:02 that's the peak brightness typical brightness sustained across the whole
3:07 screen is 400 nits which is still brighter than most displays so all this
3:12 culminates then in a truly professional
3:15 grade monitor with high contrast ratios
3:18 accurate colors with Delta e under two and excellent coverage of even the most
3:24 demanding color gamuts it even comes with a Nifty color calibration report in
3:28 the Box neat okay then so you're stoked
3:32 as hell and you've got the Windows 10 creators update and you're ready to bask
3:37 in the glory of HDR you hit the toggle button and hey why does it look so drab
3:44 isn't HDR supposed to be uh H what's the
3:47 technical term again the welcome to
3:52 the HDR Rabbit Hole HDR is an awesome
3:56 technology but Windows 10's implementation of HDR really
4:01 demonstrates just how unsettled the dust
4:05 is so the colors went dull when HDR was
4:08 turned on for two reasons the first has to do with color space most of the
4:14 content on your PC is likely to be in the srgb color space which has fewer
4:20 colors than Rec 2020 the color space
4:23 used by the hdr10 standard so when HDR
4:27 is on colors need to be remapped to rec
4:31 2020 and since srgb has fewer colors in
4:34 the gamut it's not always a good fit the
4:37 second reason it looks bunk has to do with brightness with HDR on Windows is
4:44 imposing a ceiling of a 100 knits on the
4:47 screen's brightness the colors don't actually change they still have the same
4:53 Hue it's just that your eyes perceive them as less rich or saturated well okay
4:59 but that's pretty crap lonus why would Windows turn the brightness down because
5:04 if it didn't you would get blasted when
5:07 the non HDR content is remapped if the
5:11 whitest whites were allowed to be represented by a thousand nits of
5:15 brightness a blank white page and say
5:19 Microsoft Word would be blinding plus
5:22 all the other colors would look super saturated and
5:26 wrong so you might think then that it would be better if Windows could leave
5:31 all the colors alone until it detects HDR content that's being viewed and then
5:37 it could just adjust them on the fly but that's just not how it works right now
5:42 okay so then the solution is to just switch it on when you're watching HDR
5:47 content like stuff on Netflix or uh
5:50 Amazon Prime video or YouTube not so fast those guys offer HDR content but
5:56 due to browser limitations it's actually only available through the apps on your
6:01 HDR ready Smart TV for now fine then
6:04 lonus at least there's gaming right okay
6:08 this one yes Mass Effect Andromeda looks
6:11 sick in HDR unfortunately if you also
6:14 like to play other games right now you're bound to end up disappointed at
6:19 the moment HDR games are few and far between and many of the titles you see
6:24 advertised as HDR only do so on the Xbox 1s or the
6:31 PlayStation 4 or 4 Pro where that TV HDR
6:36 ecosystem is more mature HDR games are
6:40 coming though so in due time this monitor will be great for gaming kind of
6:46 I mean it's a beautiful monitor but its 4K is capped at 60 HZ and its response
6:52 times at about 6 milliseconds are not
6:56 that competitive with the top gaming displays so then if you're a gamer who
7:00 needs a monitor today your money may be
7:04 better spent elsewhere and if it's HDR
7:07 you're after then hooking up your PC to
7:10 a giant 4K HDR TV for the same
7:14 price that might make a fair bit of sense so then is the up 201718 q a
7:20 solution looking for a problem no actually not at all unlike dellone 8K
7:26 monitor this one has some very real
7:30 applications today if you're a content
7:33 creator you might want to consider the investment wide coverage of multiple
7:39 gamuts gives you the flexibility to produce in whatever standard your
7:42 project demands the KVM switch is super
7:46 elegant not to mention very convenient
7:49 and compared to the pricing of professional grade calibrated displays
7:54 honestly you're not really paying that more for HDR and Dell's solid reputation
8:00 for monitor build quality and support if you're a Content consumer on the other
8:05 hand well it's back to the scurve we go right now I'd say we're
