0:00 do I make you hot well there's only one way to find
0:05 out for sure a thermal camera meet the
0:09 one from Fleer an affordable thermal
0:12 camera module that Clips to the bottom of your
0:23 smartphone Mass drop is currently featuring The MSI GTX 1080 armor 8G
0:30 learn more at the link in the video description let's start with one of my
0:34 biggest complaints about the Fleer 1 in spite of the name there are actually two
0:39 of them I mean I understand the reason one is for Apple devices with a
0:44 lightning connector and the other is for Android devices with a micr USB
0:48 connector but if there was a way to equip the Fleer 2 or whatever a
0:53 successor ended up being called with swappable interfaces without
0:57 compromising the admittedly very strong connectors
1:00 I think that would go a long way towards improving the versatility and future
1:04 proofness of these devices an important
1:07 consideration when you factor in that even an affordable mobile accessory
1:12 version of fle technology is going to run you $250
1:17 us let's take a closer look then at the
1:20 one both versions look almost the same
1:23 and share the same internals and same basic mode of operation so we'll be
1:28 mostly treating them as one for the rest of the video here the outer shell is
1:33 plastic but fairly confidence inspiring
1:36 it's not rated for water or dust resistance but it seems like it could
1:40 survive a drop or two on the right is a status LED equipped power button so you
1:44 can tell when it's booting up versus fully powered on and ready to engage
1:48 with the phone app on the left is a battery charge indicator and a micro USB
1:53 charging port so yes that means the Fleer 1 uses a 350 Mah internal battery
1:59 in does not charge off of the device it's attached to convenient in some ways
2:03 but kind of a drag in others and finally at the front are the twin cameras the
2:08 stars of the show I did say twin but I should probably clarify that I mean
2:13 fraternal twins in this case because they are absolutely nothing alike one of
2:18 them is for capturing infrared light a thermal camera and the other is for
2:23 capturing visible light a well camera
2:26 camera the thermal camera uses fleer's
2:29 leptin an astonishingly small and lowcost longwave infrared sensor to
2:35 generate 80x 60 pixel thermal images
2:39 that are accurate to within. 1° C from a
2:43 range ofus 20 all the way up to 120°
2:47 that's -4 to 248 Fahrenheit for our American viewers the visible camera is
2:54 less impressive it's a 640x 480 yeah VGA
2:59 air and that's pretty much all we know about
3:02 it other than the reason that the Fleer one even has one without getting too
3:08 deep into this resolution is a word that gets frequently misused it means how
3:15 much detail can be resolved from an
3:19 image so a film picture also has a
3:23 resolution even if you can't count the
3:26 pixels so let's fire up the app and just take a picture here so the visible
3:31 camera is actually where it seems like
3:34 the advertised effective resolution of 160x 120 comes from thanks to a
3:41 technique called MSX blending that in a
3:44 nutshell captures a visible light picture then strips out everything but
3:50 textures and edges and overlays the thermal image with the ability to peek
3:55 behind it at the original normal capture as needed for easy diagnosis of whatever
4:00 it is that you're looking at an HVAC system a problematic circuit or that
4:04 freaking cat that's trying to avoid being taken to the vet Fleer claims this
4:10 technique allows the image to have five times the detail a figure that they may
4:15 have pulled out of their butts for all I can tell but whether it's four or five
4:18 or six times it clearly works pretty darn well because the thermal image
4:23 alone is much more difficult to read especially for a lay person like me and
4:29 on top of still image capture it actually supports video Panorama and
4:34 even timelapse capture which is actually a stroke of Genius for diagnosing
4:39 problems that might develop slowly or be related to the time of
4:43 day which is cool lus but uh why should
4:46 I care what are these things even for and why the hell do you need one well
4:51 for the first one I don't know about you but I care because they're just pretty
4:55 freaking cool as for practical uses there are actually many thermal imagers
5:00 like so many things were actually developed for military use allowing
5:04 Personnel to detect heat signatures engine exhaust operating machinery and
5:08 even people during the Korean War but today their applications range from
5:13 medical use ever seen those cameras and arrivals at the international airport
5:17 they're checking to see if you have a fever and you're going to spread disease
5:20 to building optimization to check the effectiveness of insulation to law
5:24 enforcement night vision goggles anyone to storm tracking to Home Inspection to
5:29 you're watching you name it and what we've been enjoying is the way that
5:34 suddenly a thermal camera allows us to validate manufacturer claims like
5:39 oneplus's assertion that their quick charging technique keeps the phone
5:42 running cooler than competing qualcom Quick Charge 3.0 and razors claim that
5:47 the new blade 14 2016 Edition runs much
5:50 cooler than last year's model neat right
5:54 yeah I guess lonus but uh does this make the existence of higher end ones like
5:59 the Fleer E60 which is like a $7,000
6:02 camera that you were showing off on Instagram a little while ago uh
6:05 Superfluous great question but no I don't think so the app is surprisingly
6:11 stable and functional but higher end models have features that are a must for
6:16 industrial use swappable batteries SD recording rugged housing and the ability
6:21 to operate without a phone attached to name a few and the fler one is not
6:27 perfect we ran into compatibility issues for example with the iPhone SE and on
6:32 the Android side of things the onward March towards USB type-c standardization
6:37 reveals the problem with that future proofness issue that I alluded to before
6:42 we actually tried using uh type c to
6:45 microe adapter with the HTC 10 but we
6:48 didn't have any luck getting it to work though your mileage may vary bottom line
6:54 though it's not perfect and hopefully
6:58 resolution durab and compatibility rise as cost continues to lower but if you
7:04 need an affordable thermal camera for some reason then the Fleer one which
7:08 Fleer is leaving with us to enrich our future reviews by the way which is
7:11 awesome will likely be as welcome in addition to your diagnostic Arsenal as
7:16 it is to ours speaking of being a welcome
7:19 addition to Your Arsenal tunnel bear and
7:23 my notes say something about summer and boarding planes and cars and trains does
7:28 anyone board a car anyway the point is
7:32 that tunnel bear is the simple VPN app that makes it easy to browse privately
7:36 and enjoy a more open internet with tunnel bear turned on a couple of things
7:41 happen number one is your connection is secured with AES 256bit encryption and
7:46 two your online activity is kept private from your internet provider and
7:52 advertisers who are looking to harvest your data and sell you more like I don't
7:57 know aluminum spoon or whatever some
8:00 stupid thing that you've probably seen a banner for recently tunnel bear has a
8:04 top rated privacy policy and does not log your activity and the best part is
8:09 you can try it for absolutely free it's like those food samples in the grocery
8:13 store it's like wow I can have 500
8:16 megabytes of these food samples no credit card required then if you decide
8:21 you want an unlimited plan they start at just a few bucks a month and you can
8:25 save 10% by going to Tunnel bear.com LT
