5:22 earlier the US government is giving GM and other manufacturers and automakers

5:27 in general preferential treatment which is quite

5:30 um they're doing that because they're setting a law in I believe Michigan yeah

5:34 where you have to sell your car through an independent dealership you can't do

5:37 the showroom thing that Tesla likes doing we've been talking about this kind

5:42 of stuff all over the states for a long time um but but this is more a targeted

5:47 experience so the Michigan law forbids having galleries like I was just

5:51 discussing and Michigan customers would still be able to buy the vehicles online

5:56 or travel out of state to a corporate owned store out of state which I think

6:01 is ridiculously silly you don't want them to be able to go to a gallery

6:05 showroom where they would actually at least be able to sit in and see the car

6:10 before buying it but you're totally okay with them buying it

6:13 online what that makes no sense at all

6:18 like there's like the the the the

6:21 independent dealership part al already doesn't make sense because I hate

6:24 dealing with independent dealerships every single time I have to which has

6:28 been once but still um it suck I've done

6:32 it too and it sucked for me too so that's a sample size of at least two oh

6:36 man absolutely fantastic this is definitely all the sample size you would

6:41 need for running an actual study of these things I mean the issue is that I

6:44 I like I get independent dealerships when they have a specific value ad yes

6:50 beyond what the manufacturer is able to do for some reason but if the

6:55 manufacturer chooses not to work through an independent dealership then that be

6:59 fine that should be their right you shouldn't you shouldn't mandate

7:04 middlemen if you could do that you should be able to mandate out Apple

7:07 Stores I mean the merchant the merchant class sprung up because their entire job

7:14 was to facilitate the movement of goods

7:17 from one place to another so they were actually they you you would actually get

7:22 you know silk from here and then you would take it over there and you would

7:26 sell the silk and you would buy gems and you take it over there Buy Low sell High

7:29 the whole you know being a merchant thing moving it around yeah being a

7:33 merchant isn't about sitting on your butt in one place with the regulatory

7:39 bodies just telling you telling telling

7:42 consumers and telling manufacturers that they all have to go be routed through

7:47 you so you can take a cut like how does that how does that make any sense how

7:51 does that help us progress how does the rest of the world not completely leave

7:56 the us behind in the Dark Ages I I don't

7:59 understand like I would I would understand way more if say Tesla was like an non-american company I don't

8:05 care where they're from if they were just a non-american company in general so these laws were to try to help

8:09 American companies Tesla is an American company they manufacture in the states

8:14 you're barring uh a company that manufactures their cars in the states

8:19 against companies that you're not barring which in a lot of cases

8:24 don't which is so stupid a lot of cars are manufactured in Mexico I don't know

8:28 a ton about car manufacturing but um I know that there's a lot of cars

8:32 manufactured in Mexico that are not going to have to go through the Hoops

8:35 that Tesla has to go through and they're manufacturing designing everything in

8:39 the States they're even making their batteries in the States they're planning on putting that battery manufacturing

8:43 plant in Nevada so like what are you trying to accomplish here this is a new

8:47 really exciting company that's coming out of the states um and it's like

8:51 they're determined to make them not want to stay there yeah like I I think the

8:56 only reason why they're staying there is cuz like Elon likes the state

9:01 so kind of does as he pleases doesn't he yeah he pretty much does all right have

9:05 we already talked about Apple versus retailers the waron NFC payment

9:09 technology so Apple pay is not exactly

9:13 revolutionary or groundbreaking I mean Google wallet's been available for

9:17 something like four years yeah or something like that but I don't think

9:21 it's been super widely used no no it hasn't been super widely used it hasn't

9:26 been super widely publicized it's one of those things where Google introduced the

9:30 tech and basically went yeah use it or don't or whatever yeah and and that's

9:34 and that's fine but Apple pay pretty much just for those of you who aren't

9:38 familiar uses an NFC chip in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in order to enable and I

9:43 think uh the new iPads also really also

9:46 have it as well yeah trying to pay with this giant iPad could be wrong about

9:50 that one I hope I'm wrong about that one cuz that's going to that's going to be a

9:53 whole new level of pad hole like you can

9:57 take your pictures of your food in the restaurant iPad selfie yeah yeah and

10:01 like iPad tap to pay you you could take your selfie with your iPhone as you pay

10:05 with your iPad just to show how stupid it is that would be fantastic ah so so

10:10 anyway so it's it uses the NFC chip unfortunately for what is the least

10:14 useful thing possible for me because Apple pay isn't even rolled out in

10:17 Canada there is no timeline for Canada and I really wish we were able to do

10:20 simple things like file file trans and stuff like that um but no no apple needs

10:25 to forge their own path don't they so so basically uses your NFC chip at those

10:30 same terminals that if you're in an enlightened country like Australia of

10:35 all places for some reason is like way ahead of the rest of the world on this

10:38 stuff allows you to Simply tap your device authenticate using a a pin code

10:43 or your touch ID even and then pay for something with a debit or credit card

10:48 without ever actually giving the retailer access to those credit card

10:53 numbers or anything like that so that huge Target breach that huge Home Depot

10:58 breach we're talking 40 and 56 million

11:01 customer credit cards that were compromised in each of those ones

11:05 respectively if I have those numbers correct don't quote me on that there

11:09 there would be no potential for that if you used Apple pay for everything

11:12 because the idea is that it actually stores the information in the same place

11:15 on the phone as your touch ID information which is not sent to Apple

11:20 servers very freaking cool stuff of course you have to register the bank

11:24 accounts and credit cards and all that but the point is the idea is that it

11:28 will be more secure and app's taking a fairly small cut on top of what uh a

11:34 credit card would already be taking I

11:37 think it's shoot now this is this is a detail that I actually forget um I think

11:43 it's 0.15% I'm not sure Apple pay fee 0.15

11:49 I'm going to try searching for that yeah apple gets 0.15% cut of the purchase so

11:55 actually they're not trying to go and be

11:58 a credit card with credit card like margins I mean often credit cards are in

12:02 the three plus% range range I hope you

12:05 guys realize that when you buy something with a credit card every retailer in the

12:09 world that accepts credit cards is basically just increasing their prices

12:13 by three and a half 4 and a half% in order to compensate for that because

12:16 they take those rewards that you get that are from that air miles cash back

12:22 they're just giving you back some of what they already took from you the reason why they're pushing people to use

12:27 credit cards and giving them these reward programs is cuz they skim money off it all the time y it's not even

12:32 necessarily because of the interest they get from you not paying it because you

12:35 don't understand compound interest but so anyway Apple's pitch to the banks in

12:39 the States was look we're going to increase security we're going to reduce credit card fraud which should reduce

12:44 your insurance premiums because every time someone fraudulently uses your

12:48 credit card to buy a Hummer either kind of course anytime

12:54 yeah I went there anytime someone uses your credit card to make some kind of a

12:57 purchase and that item doesn't get tracked down and

13:01 returned well somebody has to pay for that and because of credit card fraud

13:05 prevention and the way that most credit card issuers will protect the consumer

13:10 you're going to get a refund As Long as You Follow the proper steps in order to

13:14 report that stuff so someone has to pay for that so if Apple kind of goes well look any of our customers who use your

13:20 card through Apple pay will reduce the potential for fraudulent use making life

13:25 easier for you guys well hey that's worth the 0.15% isn't it we're making

13:28 life better for everyone well retailers are butt hurt

13:34 now apparently which is pretty

13:37 frustrating to me and it looks like even though we're not getting uh we're not

13:42 getting statements from companies like CVS and Right Aid in the US that have

13:47 stopped accepting Apple pay I mean we're talking some retailers you actually

13:52 Apple pay was working yeah and then they stopped was working and then they shut

13:56 it off yeah and it will you'll get an error message on the on the cashier you

14:00 can actually see the error message it says Apple pay not supported or something like that and they're not

14:05 issuing statements necessarily but the speculation is that they're developing

14:09 their own NFC payment software in order

14:12 to save the 2 to 3% per transaction that

14:15 they would normally have to pay to now apple plus a credit card company or bank

14:19 or whatever else the case may be um I

14:24 mean normally I'm not a huge fan of any

14:27 kind of proprietary standard but the thing about Apple's proprietary standard

14:32 here is all you really have to do is give them a fee that is going to save

14:37 you money and effort in the in the big picture in order to manage this this

14:42 system that really anyone as long as they cooperate can bu wouldn't you have

14:46 to pay the Apple fee and the credit card fee m so wouldn't it not save you money

14:50 in the future wouldn't it cost you not for the retailer yes but the retailer

14:55 should be more concerned about the customer experience in my mind the

14:59 retailer is going to want to be as appealing as possible I mean I I forget

15:04 what the number is but I think they've got over a million people activated on

15:08 Apple pay already like massive massive

15:12 numbers so if you're if you're a retailer and you kind of sit there and

15:16 go oh well gee I guess I want 3% of the

15:20 population who are evidently all interested in this easier more secure

15:24 way to pay for things I guess I want them to not shop at my store because I'd

15:29 rather release my own competing standard I mean at least the thing about Apple is

15:34 that their standard will not help a

15:38 direct unless you directly compete with the Apple Store their standard paying

15:43 Apple to use it will not directly help a competitor whereas if we have every

15:47 Pharmacy chain and every clothing chain

15:51 coming up with their own NFC payment systems that you have to have your own

15:54 app and you have to enter the payment information and you have to have separate management tools well that is

15:59 much more fragmented than even Apple's still relatively closed Garden system I

16:05 I don't know if it's actually going to stop people from shopping at certain stores CU I'm sure they'll still carry

16:09 their debit or Andor credit cards with them so I don't know if it'll actually

16:13 stop them at least yet but it could be a future thing where you want to stop

16:17 carrying Cards entirely when a lot more stores are picking it up and a lot more

16:21 people are using this type of Technology that's exactly what we want okay so two

16:24 things first of all I disagree I think that for certain people for Tekken

16:28 enthusiasts who are like into that they

16:32 will look if it's if it's like I'm standing here and there's Walgreens and

16:37 there's CVS and one of them takes Apple pay and one of them doesn't I think the

16:41 tech geek and me goes I'm going to go to Walgreens really yeah for sure why not I

16:46 could not give a crap the pricing is basically similar so so let's say all

16:50 other things equal they both carry you know XL size condom the kind I

16:55 need right so it doesn't matter which one I go into

16:59 ohz I'll be safe either way okay I love

17:03 how it's not like brand or reliability it's just like sizing yeah my gun just

17:43 about more more Progressive payment Technologies so let's say the shop

17:48 supports Google wallet or Apple pay or some kind of cool touchless smartphone

17:53 enabled payment technology that that you care about I just see my thing is um I

17:58 care care less like I still think it's cool but I care less about that than

18:03 other metrics now if if it's going with what you're saying where the stores are

18:07 exactly identical yeah other than the NFC pay thing like sure I'll go there um

18:12 but like the the the the store I buy video games from because I really like

18:17 that store and I want to be able to support them because they're cool um I'm

18:21 not going to stop going there because they don't have an NFC payment system

18:25 cuz they probably wouldn't be the first ones to adopt that CU they're this

18:28 little store and changing things like their debit machines is probably not

18:32 something they're super worried about so this might come down to more like 5

18:36 years from now eight years from now when everyone has NFC payment systems but

18:40 it's going to come down on the debit machines that you buy right so it's

18:44 going to come down to do they support the system that you use most in your

18:48 daily life like if you're a Google Wallet user or you're a you know Apple

18:53 pay user do you go to the one that supports the one that you generally use

18:58 or do you do you go to the one that's a pain in the butt because they have their

19:02 own stupid proprietary thing so as it happens the retailers um that that we

19:06 were talking about are members of the of MCX and they're working on their own

19:12 mobile payment system current C haha

19:15 currency get it but modern currency actually I think it's kind of clever

19:18 which is in beta and expected to launch next year requires you to scan a barcode

19:23 though there's like a QR code involved as well I think in order to make

19:26 payments and it's something that's been proven is not not being as secure as

19:29 nearfield communication and other encrypted technologies that are used by

19:32 Apple pay and Google Wallet so here we go uh Twitter Blitz

19:39 time Apple pay and Google Wallet are just Niche services so they can tick off

19:43 boxes on their marketing PayPal should be introduced first interesting point I

19:48 would I would use PayPal yeah I would I would use a PayPal

19:52 app to pay for things yeah I would I would probably be interest I generally like PayPal I I think it should have

19:56 been making more progress in last few years um it feels like PayPal had such

20:02 an opportunity to do a Bitcoin type thing where they or something or

20:06 something like there there was room for Innovation there um Elon the guy who

20:12 like co- started it or whatever has has publicly talked about how they've been

20:15 kind of disappointing right lately okay a little off topic but if a store

20:20 supports Google Wallet will they automatically support Apple pay in some

20:23 cases yes Apple pay was just working

20:26 even though they weren't on Apple's list of retailers actually the ones we're

20:30 talking about are great examples of that and the funny thing about these guys is

20:34 they've also turned off Google Wallet at the same time even though Google

20:38 wallet's been working now for years wow yeah um okay honestly no one can hack

20:44 cash so that's what I use well there are other issues with cash you can hack cash

20:49 in real life you know like where's that gun in that crowbar that gun that

20:53 crowbar do we look like people who could hack

20:56 cash hack your cash bro we need a shirt

20:59 we do cash hackers have grenade too cash hackers just cuz it makes no

21:06 sense anyways um if if your credit card's stolen they can reverse a lot of

21:11 the charges that happened on it if your cash is stolen you're screw your cash is

21:16 just gone yeah uh that's actually in line with Josh's comment here cash is

21:19 always going to be there no I don't care about any of them

21:24 because no one accepts them here good point and it's the same in Canada but we

21:27 should still look to this technology as an indication of what's coming in the

21:32 future um I would go to the store that supports the technology because I want

21:36 to spread the tech and make it more pervasive and that is a very that's always a thing that's a compelling

21:40 reason to do that's a voting with your wallet that's like literally V your

21:44 wallet your Google wallet or voting with your pay your Apple

21:50 pay see this is even more badass fist bump because it's got the cat sleeves

21:59 it would totally sway my choice not really in O it is 50/50 to get paywave

22:04 as it is when they do have it is so much easier yeah so paywave is their NFC

22:08 thing I think we call it pay pass here in Canada yeah but never works and every

22:12 single deit machine you see has little sticker on it pay pass not working or

22:16 something if I had it I would use it like a boss um S Oliver says cash or

22:21 cards are obsolete but NFC payments are still too scary or sketchy to me

22:24 although I know how they work very interesting we should probably do a fastest Possible episode on NFC payments

22:29 probably just try and cut through some of the garbage information that's out

22:32 there about it yes all else being equal I would go to the place with the more

22:37 Progressive payment style says joou uh Josh says nope it's just another

22:42 iteration of something like PayPal or Bitcoin which is not really anything

22:46 actually it's not really anything like PayPal or Bitcoin because you're still

22:50 just using your debit account or your credit account it's just another way of

22:54 accessing it without a card electronically hi Jack

23:02 buying things easier I mean I think the web here we're g to uh we're going to D

23:18 so big because they make shopping easy

23:22 and brainless they have everything and you can order with one click and their

23:27 customer services like very well known everywhere yep talked about widely and

23:32 you don't have to do any thinking you don't have to think about oh how much is

23:36 the shipping going to cost and you don't usually have to worry about it being late usually more often than not they're

23:40 early if it has to be late or early they're usually early I had I had a

23:44 shipment that was supposed to show up in like I think it was 7 to 10 business

23:47 days and it was there the next day I like what that that to me is is the

23:53 biggest thing that retailers should be looking at if they're trying to decide

23:56 should we support Apple pay or Google wallet or MCX is upcoming standard or

24:01 whatever else and the answer should be

24:04 yes because you want your store to be easy to shop at that being said Amazon

24:10 doesn't accept Paypal Amazon doesn't accept Paypal which is actually

24:13 continues to be a frustration for me and if someone were to rise up and be

24:18 otherwise equal to Amazon in every other way I would choose the one that takes

24:21 PayPal person what's that what's that thing from the Wall-E movie buy and buy

24:25 and large byy and large I'm waiting for Costco to go etail cuz I just have a

24:31 feeling that would be aw bad I love Costco I'd be down for Costco etail all

30:31 amazed at how well this worked this is brilliant because this is what I was in

30:53 come with this already so I'm still going to be critical even if they do

31:05 article does a great job great article on 9 to5 Mac because when the app when

31:08 the iPhone first launched with iPhone OS which is what we used to call it there

31:14 weren't really many third party apps you didn't need to organize things into

31:18 folders there there wasn't that much to do and because every phone could be

31:22 operated one-handed by most people stuff

31:26 that you you know High priority stuff could automatically go to the top left

31:30 corner and you could actually reach that but nowadays it's the bottom right to

31:33 center of the screen that's actually easiest to access and I love what

31:37 they've done here now I I don't even necessarily like this because you've

31:40 seen how I use things my my desktop on my phone is blank um not even kidding my

31:46 default like the first page you go to on my phone is blank my desktop on all of

31:50 my computers are uh view do not show

31:53 icons so that I have no icons including no recycle bin because I don't like any

31:58 being there um I like extremely clean

32:01 for all of my devices so this looks incredibly messy to me and I don't want

32:05 it but I think it's extremely cool that it exists because I do know a lot of

32:09 people that will want it and it opens the door to other various themes and

32:14 maybe slight adaptations of this whole idea which is actually really cool and

32:18 how well it works how you can zoom out to see the whole picture and then jump to a different area can make navigation

32:23 really fast y much faster than swiping

32:26 three pages or even pages over and then going into a

32:30 folder a horrible combination going over a few pages then going into a folder

32:35 would take forever when you can just tap in between some of the icons which will

32:39 Zoom it all the way out and then tap on an icon which will Zoom it in and then

32:42 tap on the icon again which will open the actual app and the the article makes

32:46 some great Arguments for how easy this would be to to adopt like folders

32:51 wouldn't have to go away it could just work like this icons wouldn't even

32:54 necessarily have to be redesigned oh yeah and they they make the same complaint about Apple's stupid

32:59 accessibility double tap thing that I did where it's like what what is that

33:03 that's just the clgi thing ever and they even looked at this and went well hold on a second what if we just take

33:07 existing icons now and make them all circles actually it kind of looks like

33:21 some travel thing that one doesn't look super great but the most of the other

33:25 ones look fine some of them don't work particularly well but the reality of it

33:29 is is app developers are going to have to have a round icon anyway if they want

35:39 one is it means that I'm never navigating between home screens so I only use folders and then I'll have

35:55 delete all of your other ones it just says it's full and then leaves it in the

44:25 power supply and a PCI Express slot inside let's see if they yep there we go

44:29 so it's a power supply and a PCI Express slot inside that um allows you to

44:35 basically have external PCI Express and

44:38 plug it into your laptop um I think the only models it works with right now are

44:43 ones that probably don't even really need an external graphics card for the

44:52 here we go the Alienware 13 will only ship with GeForce GTX 86 M uh Graphics

45:40 back your desktop CPU to try and find an equivalency and then once you found a

45:45 CPU level equivalency then bench the graphics card on each one and see what

45:49 the performance difference is you can play around with it a fair bit but the issue that I ran into when I was doing

45:54 my uh my 980 versus 980m video not that

45:57 long ago was that even though um motherboards do let you play around with

46:01 your CPU multiplier a fair bit many of them don't let you turn it down no turn

46:07 down the desktop one yeah they don't let you turn it down enough oh enough yeah

46:12 so you can turn it down a little bit but you can't turn it down enough to be

46:15 equivalent to a same architecture mobile CPU yeah we'd have to get a much older

46:19 architecture one I guess and so and once you're doing that it becomes an Apple

46:22 store just comparison so so that was the challenge that I ran into uh supports

46:27 any GPU up to 375 watts and works for now only with the Alienware 13 so that

46:32 one does have an 860m so hopefully I

46:35 guess that gives people a compelling reason to uh to buy one of these it

46:38 costs 300 bucks though so you'll pay you you have to buy a new laptop you have to

46:43 buy a graphics card and you have to buy 300 bucks for the privilege of using the

46:46 box and consider yeah considering how much like how long those boxes have

46:51 existed in various forms um and how much

46:54 is really going into that box it's pretty expensive I mean this standard

46:57 makes no sense until it runs on Thunderbolt so yeah and it will at some

47:02 point we will get Thunderbolt boxes that allow external gpus in fact the only

47:06 reason they don't work now is that AMD and NVIDIA haven't enabled it so all

47:11 alien wear's done here is they've exposed a direct PCI Express link

47:16 through a proprietary cable so that the GPU can't tell that it's you know in an

47:21 external box that's all they've done there's no reason that Thunderbolts
