0:00 okay so part two we're ready to get back
0:04 at this actually we had never intended to shoot a part two of this but uh it
0:09 would have been like a 40 minute long video so yeah let's
0:23 go Intel skull Canyon Nook features a sixth generation core i7 processor and
0:29 Thunderbolt 3 you can learn more at the link in the video
0:33 description we got through all the troubleshooting crap and it looks like
0:38 the way that it can work because you have to understand that HDMI over
0:44 DisplayPort is not quite the same thing
0:47 as native HDMI and that's what the Vive uses it uses HDMI over DP so the way to
0:54 handle that then was to feed my DP
0:57 signal all the way through the Thunderbolt cable to my Elgato dock out again through a
1:03 DisplayPort cable into DisplayPort here and we were able to do the
1:07 translation that way it didn't work when
1:10 we just tried to use a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and go HDMI into the box
1:17 but that means the proof of concept is
1:20 running now so let's assemble it
1:30 I'd love for this to be able to fit like right here so we'll call that kind of
1:35 good enough for a proof of concept and then
1:40 power to this the
1:44 output
1:47 sick I also need
1:51 this for valves box then goes to where the hell does
1:56 that go right I remember that goes okay
1:59 oh actually oh that's kind of tricky
2:03 this one needs cables going into both
2:06 sides of it I wish I could oh you know
2:10 what that would be a pretty freaking cool place to put it something yeah cuz
2:15 there's already um there's already a velcro strap here MH so I'll just grab
2:19 some double-sided uh
2:25 okay I don't understand how this bag
2:28 works there we go so
2:33 that is theoretically the light
2:38 tether now I've just got to get the bag attached to the
2:55 headset so I've done another round of
2:58 cable shaving which I'm hoping is going to give us
3:02 enough clearance here to close the top of the bloody headset so first is HDMI
3:07 then USB although this is a very short USB
3:11 cable the 3 and2 mm audio extension I realized I can just use the original one
3:16 it's already light and
3:19 short and the last thing we need
3:23 is power I could have grabbed an extra
3:26 power adapter see they all use the same
3:29 for the cable breakout box and for the headset itself they all used the same
3:33 12vt power and the same size connector but even if I did bring one from
3:39 home it wouldn't be right angle and I really don't want to destroy that cable
3:44 so I hit a bit of a roadblock while I was able to strip down
3:48 the HDMI cable and the USB cable to make
3:52 the cover fit on the Vive headset which is more important than I thought because
3:56 the headstrap doesn't go into place without it I I don't have a DC power
4:03 plug that I can use for it because the only one that comes with the Vive that's
4:08 a reasonable length and isn't attached to the tether is a straight and B
4:13 already needed for the breakout box the
4:17 good news is I found this a USB to the
4:21 same size DC plug freaking Wicked so all
4:26 I have to do then is take a 12vt 1.5 5
4:29 amp power adapter which I can power in the backpack and splice it onto that
4:36 plug Boop oh my God how am I going to do
4:39 this it's just ripping away one of the wires every time I try and uh strip the
4:46 outside but I'm not going to be defeated by a wire not today
4:56 Luke do you need to shoot crap
5:00 these are so crappy like the sheathing is stronger than the copper wires
5:06 inside okay so flight takes off at what did I just
5:10 do oh son of a I just spliced the
5:13 two freaking ends together okay what's my
5:18 excuse this may work though hold on a
5:21 second I could totally claim to have done that on purpose I just created uh
5:26 an adapter for that other battery bank now I don't need to use AC power for the
5:31 Vive headset boom that's what I meant to do okay so we're back in business and
5:37 this is great because carrying around this power brick honestly isn't much
5:41 worse than carrying around all this copper cabling and now we can power the
5:45 Vive with this instead I just have to
5:49 find a place to put
5:52 it actually that might work
5:56 nicely oh oh oh don't you you love it
6:00 when things just work I probably would but I wouldn't
6:06 know oh sick
6:11 okay that's a beautiful thing that I just witnessed right
6:18 there so
6:21 now we can go HDMI in
6:25 here uh oh this is one other thing that I grabbed off camera
6:30 just a short USB extension cuz that USB Cable's really short this is a fun
6:35 Discovery even though these ports are all colorcoded blue they're USB 2 ports
6:42 I had no idea I was running and looking high and low for USB 3 a TOA cables and
6:49 then I found the original one included with the Vive I didn't really want to
6:53 destroy that one and I kind of want what the hell these are USB 2 cables anyway
6:56 so anyway I've got a short extension here it's kind of a ghetto extension
7:01 it's got this like stupid extra cable on
7:05 it then
7:10 power which oh crap I hope that fits I
7:13 actually didn't um see cutting towards yourself is only dangerous if you get
7:17 impatient and press too hard
7:23 slip really not through yet okay got to
7:27 be through now
7:31 ah there we
7:38 go come on come
7:44 off okay
7:49 work the wires are basically just soldered right to this connector end
7:54 here so effectively by just bending it I think
7:59 we can make it 90° hey
8:04 hey okay now let's see if it
8:08 fits and if I can put it in without
8:11 damaging it sort of fragile now well that is a
8:18 ghetto wiring job if I've ever seen
8:23 one the new and improved lonus tether
8:37 uh
8:40 oh no this
8:51 way
8:55 okay all right
9:06 put on the wrong way again does this look like it's on
9:10 wrong it does it it sits weird doesn't
9:13 it up okay is it open or something oh no
9:17 no it's just like sideways isn't it okay
9:20 fine ah okay so it's the other shoulder
9:23 then now I'm getting this all tangled up
9:27 so this shoulder
9:31 yes okay that feel is that the I just put it
9:42 on this ARM to okay clearly this backpack is not the
9:50 one that I would want to use cuz I can't figure it out shoot how did that come
9:55 off I mean aside from it being a horrible piece of crap
10:10 okay it's back on my USB
10:14 extension is Mia there it
10:18 is okay okay so I still have to power the
10:24 headset which admittedly there isn't a
10:28 super crazy easy way to do right
10:32 now
10:38 okay so let's try
10:43 it oh okay my
10:49 Thunderbolt dad is not showing up okay
10:53 let's try the old reboot see if that fixes it what I would do if if I were
11:00 actually setting this up for real is I would tie this in a knot like a tension
11:05 relief knot so that I don't pull too hard on it cuz one aside from the weight
11:10 and uh size Advantage uh these Thunderbolt cables are very very strong
11:15 so you could also tie it like around the leg of a chair at the bottom if you have
11:19 a bit of extra length and tie it here so you don't risk uh ripping the connectors
11:23 out at either end something I have definitely done
11:26 with my standard tether at home
11:29 okay I rebooted the headset it's on okay uh what cable is that is that oh
11:36 oh it went off for a second what cable is this can I do I get a little bit more
11:40 length for that one or no no freaking
11:45 way no freaking way I think it worked I
11:49 mean no it worked okay hold on hold on I'll get a game
11:54 open oh my goodness I can't even believe
11:58 this look at that I mean that's a better
12:01 tether
12:05 hey I mean yes I'm wearing a backpack now but I can't even feel that okay
12:12 let's see if it's actually working it seems like it
12:17 though oh shoot
12:23 right the this backpack is certainly not ideal during my benchmarking I noticed
12:28 that if I turn to the side quickly it loosened also it actually has a bunch of
12:32 other random crap in it right now so it's much heavier than it needs to be
12:36 but something like a body pack that has
12:40 all the appropriate pieces slotted into it so it's nice and tight against the
12:44 body actually wouldn't add a lot of weight and now that I've done the proof
12:49 of concept would work absolutely
12:53 fantastically there's still a lot of question marks how long the battery life
12:57 would be for the headset as well as for
13:00 the Thunderbolt dock as well as how many actual customers would exist for a
13:05 product like this I mean we're adding another $200 to the cost with the cable
13:10 alone we're adding another $100 for a Thunderbolt EX card for and it only
13:15 works on isus motherboards and it's got to be Thunderbolt 2 because Corning
13:18 doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 optical cables yet there's still some things to
13:23 work out you're adding another hundred over dollars for the Thunderbolt dock
13:27 plus all of the batteries and all that kind of stuff I mean we're looking at a
13:30 solution that would cost probably as much or more than a Vive in the first
13:34 place though the way that I see it there's only two kinds of people who
13:37 shop for a Vive the kinds of people who just spent all of their money or the
13:41 kinds of people to whom $600 is nothing
13:44 so maybe the potential customer base for
13:48 this is not as small as you might think either way this was a lot of fun for me
13:53 I'm still not sure if I'm going to convert my personal rig we'll see about
13:56 that cuz there's a lot of refinement that would have to be done to the idea
14:00 but it's very cool to see it working in practice and not have to worry about
14:04 stomping on a super heavy thick and
14:10 uh oh man it's awesome so thanks for
