0:00 The Internet of Things is a pretty broad concept overall it's the name given to
0:04 the interconnection of everyday devices from appliances in your home to
0:08 automobiles with built-in sensors all the way up to biochip transponders in
0:13 farm animals and heart monitoring imp plants and humans essentially it is the
0:17 way that machines communicate with each other in order to improve Automation and
0:22 efficiency in daily tasks now this might be a bit of a surprise to some of you
0:26 but the Internet of Things is not even close to a New Concept though it didn't
0:30 receive its name until 1999 the first
0:33 internet Appliance was actually a Coke machine at Carnegie melon University in
0:37 the early 1980s of course this was a pretty basic
0:41 implementation of internet connectivity but the programmers were able to
0:45 remotely check if the machine was functioning and even check the stock of
0:49 the machine from their PCS as trivial as it was this was the first real proof of
0:54 concept for off-site monitoring of physical things now though we have
0:58 advanced by leaps and bound since the 1980s The Internet of Things is actually
1:02 still pretty limited compared to what it could be and at this point might even be
1:07 seen as a gimmick to the uninformed individual but it is growing in many
1:12 areas it is actually growing in too many areas to touch on all of them in this
1:16 video So today we're going to focus on how the Internet of Things is impacting
1:19 Automobiles and our homes so cars now
1:22 have sensors that measure performance indicators like tire pressure fuel
1:26 economy and various engine levels like oil pressure and temperature and some
1:30 high-end cars can even receive firmware updates that add new or improved
1:34 features a great example of this is the model S from Tesla Motors owners of this
1:38 car recently received a firmware update that added features like traffic based
1:42 navigation and location-based smart air suspension this is a fantastic
1:47 advancement as it allows manufacturers to update and upgrade their products
1:51 post launch rather than just adding the feature to the next year's model and
1:56 expecting the consumer to buy that one when it's released company that are
2:00 trying to increase home automation are currently focused on optimizing security
2:03 and comfort installing internet accessible cameras locking or unlocking
2:08 your doors with a smartphone app and adjusting your thermostat either before
2:11 you get home or before you get out of bed are just three internet-based
2:15 advancements available to homeowners today so to the Carnegie melon
2:20 University programmers in the80s this would have seemed like something out of
2:23 a bad science fiction movie but it's very real and is only the beginning of
2:28 what the Internet of Things is capable of I mean even today most internet and
2:32 connected devices require human intervention to really change anything
2:36 about them but in the future as more and more things are connected with each
2:41 other they can read off of themselves and each other instead of off of us so
2:46 the concern then is that if machines are going to become so intelligent and
2:49 efficient that they take over most of our day-to-day tasks then where do
2:53 humans really fit in do we have a point anymore and this is the main issue that
2:58 some of the greatest minds of this age are starting to address with this
3:01 growing implementation of automation earlier this year Bill Gates warned the
3:05 public that the demand for many jobs at the lower end of the skill set which he
3:09 determined as drivers waiters nurses and similar professions will be
3:13 substantially lower in 20 years than they are today and while it isn't
3:17 directly related to automation of tasks artificial intelligence is also a
3:21 growing concern Elon Musk CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX has recently been
3:26 trying to increase awareness about the dangers of AI in automation stating that
3:31 bad super intelligences could become a massive threat to our way of life in as
3:35 little as 5 years so what can we say about the internet of things then I
3:39 guess well it has the potential to increase ease and efficiency of Our
3:42 Lives by a large margin in the coming years and could potentially save lives
3:46 with instant reporting from devices that monitor our health but with an increase
3:50 in automation comes a legitimate threat to the jobs of the masses and a
3:54 Potential Threat to our overall health and safety with advantage in artificial
3:58 intelligence so let's just hope that we can maintain you know those
4:02 intelligences as friends like Jarvis and keep uh you know the whole Skynet
4:06 situation from ever entering our reality speaking of intelligence linda.com
4:11 linda.com is your One-Stop shop for learning a variety of skills online
4:15 which could help make sure you're not made obsolete by a machine in the next
4:18 20 years okay I can't make any guarantees about the next 20 years but let's focus on the next couple years at
4:22 least they have thousands of courses available with new ones added every week
4:25 and each one is taught by an industry expert so whether you're currently in
4:29 school want to beef up on your studies or you're working full-time and want to
4:32 learn something new on your own schedule without a massive time commitment
4:35 linda.com is an ideal service to expand your knowledge so head over to linda.com
4:40 tequ and give their free trial a shot they actually just increased the
