0:04 hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a freaking computer screen well
0:10 have we ever got a deal for you as long as you don't need high refresh rate HDR
0:15 10-bit color freesync g-sync or sexy RGB lighting
0:19 then this right here is the scepter u27
0:23 the cheapest 4k monitor on amazon at
0:26 just 179 bucks but is it any good
0:32 well i wouldn't be able to tell you if it
0:35 wasn't for our sponsor storyblocks storyblocks offers you studio quality
0:40 stock video clips for a fraction of the cost check it out today at the link in
0:44 the video description
0:54 all right so james over there has actually seen this already but
0:58 i haven't so this is going to be my first time
1:02 unboxing just how much monitor you can get for
1:05 180 bucks i'll tell you you're not going to get a lot of packaging so
1:10 i mean it should be fine as long as ups doesn't you know drop kick it or
1:14 anything outputs wow it's got built-in speakers
1:18 so that's not bad although my expectations are
1:22 pretty low in terms of what kind of speed wow you get a metal stand i wasn't
1:28 really expecting that i was expecting it to be pretty low plastic
1:35 all right that's cool
1:42 included accessories you got your screws you got your other more different screws
1:46 you got your driver of screws also known as a screwdriver
1:50 uh one HDMI cable one
1:54 pretty skinny power cord but that's fine i
1:59 guess huh i guess they didn't need a third ground prong for this for some
2:02 reason and some other more different screws
2:07 you also get the monitor itself and we have come to the point where even
2:12 literally the cheapest displays are super thin
2:16 with narrow bezels these days 2018 is a great time to be alive isn't it
2:21 look at that oh thank god i mean
2:25 if it wasn't compatible with Windows 10 whatever would i do the craziest thing
2:29 about this sticker is that that doesn't happen by accident
2:34 someone somewhere went out of their way to
2:38 obtain reams upon reams of these stickers
2:41 and find some way to work into the workflow of producing this monitor that they get
2:46 applied to them who made that call
2:51 base screw
2:55 hanging screw so these are for for if you're face amounting it okay that's
2:58 cool that is actually a really nice inclusion that's one of the ways that
3:03 conventional you know the monitor brands you've ever heard of
3:06 tend to differentiate their low end products is they don't allow them to be
3:11 mounted on a third-party ARM well
3:15 this is a serious advantage for this one
3:19 it's always been something that's kind of triggered because it doesn't cost them really anything to put
3:23 four freaking holes there this is not even the worst screwdriver i've ever
3:27 encountered and basically for free
3:32 uh you probably need to know which way the stand goes on though uh so there's these
3:37 convenient rubber feet on the bottom of the metal stand
3:42 i gotta say the i o is a little better than i expected so we've got two HDMI
3:46 ports though you should note and they've marked this very clearly one of them is
3:50 only HDMI 1.4 so it doesn't have the latest hdcp as well 4k 30 hertz and it
3:56 won't be able to play the latest protected content one of them those HDMI
4:00 2.0 hdcp 2.2 4k 60hz it's also got
4:03 displayport and dvi curiously along with a headphone jack now you're not going to
4:08 get like a usb hub or anything like that but frankly
4:12 at this price you shouldn't be expecting that moment of truth scepter
4:19 worst peel ever
4:25 it should be illegal to ship monitors with stickers that not only are just
4:28 completely superfluous but also cover the screen
4:33 uh let's go ahead and have a look at the at the menu here so we've got our
4:37 they've they've committed a cardinals in here they've put buttons on the back without
4:42 labels on the front so
4:45 we're just kind of i'm just kind of guessing here
4:49 overdrive is on
4:52 just does nothing they call us they do nothing no never
4:56 mind i just had it wrong blue light shift so you can
5:01 it's kind of like a reading mode now that we're running at 60 hertz my
5:06 immediate impressions are pretty good
5:10 like it there's no obvious like oh wow this is really you know pretty crap
5:15 input leg or dang can we actually cut the lights like do
5:20 you guys remember when every cheap monitor had like the grossest tn panel
5:24 and just like epic amounts of backlight
5:27 bleed along the sides like this is not bad
5:30 like obviously you get a bit of that ips glow but
5:34 frankly that's never really bothered me and you know the stand's not amazing you
5:39 know it has height adjust in the sense that you can
5:42 put it put it
5:46 it okay that's some tilt that's good that's better than nothing
5:50 so next up here is how suitable would this thing be for gaming
5:56 well
5:59 frankly there's a fair amount of motion
6:03 blur there it's possible that we could actually
6:07 bump the refresh rate someone on reddit apparently reported getting as high as
6:10 71 hertz on this thing i don't know if i'm necessarily going to aim that high
6:14 but why don't i try setting it oh
6:18 oh
6:22 i have not seen that before okay so your mileage may vary this
6:28 worked but is clearly a terrible experience you want to get in close to
6:31 that brandon so they can really they can really have the experience here
6:36 yeah look at this razer logo it's alive
6:40 squirming like a snake all right
6:44 so we're gonna call it quits on the display overclocking at this point but
6:47 you know let's fire up a game let's fire up cs go
6:52 those are not great speakers
6:59 at 3 watts i mean i wasn't expecting
7:03 much but those are quite bad
7:08 this is actually a lot better in terms of responsiveness than i was expecting
7:14 sorry the game's not rendering like that it's just it's i'm just moving it around
7:17 like this like i mean obviously it's not a
7:22 you know 240 hertz gaming monitor or whatever but
7:27 like it doesn't feel like oh my god i suck
7:40 the thing is that if you're spending 180
7:43 on your display like running 4k has inherent problems because
7:49 you probably aren't spending enough on your pc that you can comfortably game at
7:53 4k 60 but if you happen to be hooked up to something that can game at 4k 4k60
7:57 this is not a terrible experience so the last real
8:01 question mark for us then is color accuracy and thankfully james has
8:05 actually run it through our gamut of tests using the i1 pro from x right here
8:10 and in terms of results this is far from amazing
8:14 so a delta e of 7 is well within the
8:18 range that it would be a noticeable difference to the eye
8:22 but it's not
8:25 the worst we've seen for sure
8:28 and let's actually check out our gamut test here
8:32 and with 90 coverage of srgb like with calibration yeah you wouldn't
8:38 be doing any serious photo or you know
8:41 video work on it but it is more than usable for casual use you're
8:45 not gonna you're not gonna notice like oh yeah red is pink or anything like
8:50 that i consider this very acceptable
8:55 considering the price of this display now with all that said something that
8:59 you're going to run up against with any kind of value monitor these days is that
9:04 you might be getting sort of the reject from a more reputable factory so the
9:09 word on the street is that these are using cast off samsung panels which to
9:15 be clear that's actually a pretty good thing even a b samsung panel is not
9:18 going to make for a terrible display but you're more likely to run into things
9:23 like this so we actually have a dead pixel on ours right about yeah you can
9:27 see that black spot right there sometimes you can actually kind of massage them out
9:32 it looks like that is not going to be happening the good news is
9:37 that at 4k 10 pixels are actually far less of an
9:40 issue than they used to be back when we were running 1280x1024 where you could
9:44 like really see them and dead is better than stuck like if
9:48 you got like a like a freaking blue
9:51 stuck pixel that's that's quite a lot more noticeable than this like i
9:54 probably wouldn't notice that
9:58 if i hadn't known it was there i think it's just like a tiny little
10:02 piece of dust or something what's that
10:06 oh we got another one
10:12 okay yeah actually we've got we've got a handful we've got one here
10:16 got one here got one here
10:20 that one there it took me till now to notice them and i
10:24 don't think anyone sets their desktop background like that either though
10:29 so in conclusion this thing is actually kind of awesome
10:34 like i don't know is it would you put it a different way
10:38 like at this price for at least for the unit we got which
10:42 by the way we just bought so your mileage may vary but like
10:47 clearly this can happen like i'm impressed as hell 180 bucks i mean
10:52 when you compare that to the most popular monitor on amazon which is that
10:56 hp 1080p one yeah it costs twice as much but it
10:59 absolutely blows it out of the water this thing's great
11:03 and this video is brought to you by something else that's great storyblocks
