0:00 heads up displays or Huds as they're more commonly referred to are display
0:05 units which allow the user to monitor important information on a display
0:10 without the distraction of well uh putting his or her head down okay so
0:14 admittedly the name wasn't inspired by any particularly outof thebox thinking
0:18 but while the name May suck Huds themselves are a revolutionary idea and
0:23 although many of you will quickly recognize heads up displays as the
0:27 interface showing you know how much health and Gordon Freeman has left after
0:31 clubbing 400 baby head crabs or whatever
0:35 really that's just fantasy and in the same way that truth is often Cooler Than
0:40 Fiction the origin of Hud technology is
0:43 actually derived from jet fighters even better now to be clear they weren't as
0:48 advanced as what you'll find on your collector's edition Master Chief helmet
0:52 that was totally worth the $13 you spent on it but rather they were based roughly
0:57 off an old airman's machine gun reflector site which illuminated a
1:02 Target in the site when properly aligned this technique was eventually adapted By
1:06 Her Majesty's Royal Air Force in the early' 40s and adopted to use cathode
1:11 ray tubes and phosphorous coated TV screens you know like the one your
1:15 grandma still has to allow night Pilots to monitor targets directly via HUD
1:20 radar and then well from there on the
1:23 seals never really stood a chance did they second gen units instead use solid
1:29 light such as from LEDs to project images onto a pilot's wind screen from
1:34 an LCD display and are commonly found on Commercial aircraft but due to their
1:39 cost at the time were unlikely to be found in consumer goods like cars third
1:44 gen Huds on the other hand don't require projection at all anymore but instead
1:50 utilize a specially coated viewing surface and a doad called an optical
1:55 wave guide which manipulates visual light spectrum waves whatever the pants
2:01 that means allowing folks like automakers to display readouts like
2:04 speed GPS navigation uh music controls
2:08 or even like web content directly onto their proprietary HUD systems on the
2:13 windshield which finally brings us to fourth gen systems which use lasers to
2:19 display highdefinition images directly onto clear surfaces like that suet
2:23 interface and Minority Report potentially making them very compact
2:28 portable and versatile but heads up displays aren't just useful when
2:32 operating a vehicle or solving future crime in fact there's an Ever growing
2:37 list of programs which in essence transform a person's smartphone camera
2:42 into a miniature HUD and you know while
2:45 yes technically any display that sits right in front of your face so you don't
2:50 have to put your head down is technically a HUD most of them are better implemented than that and that
2:55 allows people to see information about local hotpots Museum exist exhibits or
3:00 even the Plenty of Fish profiles of passers by as they walk down the street
3:05 and as this technology continues to develop be that in the form of laser
3:10 displays uh transparent OLED displays holographic displays or even head
3:15 mounted displays that have a screen to show you the virtual stuff with cameras
3:19 mounted to the front for the view of real life more and more people will be
3:23 able to enjoy the benefit of access to information without the use of their
3:27 hands and assuming all goes according to plan this will even be possible without
3:31 having to wear something that makes you look and feel like a total early adopter
