0:00 gamers have always looked for ways to be more immersed in their games vibration
0:04 inducing body suits omnidirectional treadmills headphones with pinpoint
0:09 location accurate sounds these gadgets promise to take us deeper into the
0:14 worlds we love but there has never been
0:17 something quite like the vortex 4d environmental simulator
0:24 wow i mean look at this it's actually blowing air at him like in
0:29 the game so how is it riley are you immersed
0:34 my eyes are kind of dry
0:43 okay yeah let's talk about that
0:54 so this curious device comes to us courtesy of a company called whirlwind
0:59 fx and it's called the vortex it's supposed to increase game or video
1:04 immersion by blowing air at your face which
1:09 may not be quite as stupid as it sounds
1:12 so to differentiate their product from just
1:16 a usb powered desk fan the airstream
1:19 actually changes in intensity and even
1:23 in temperature depending on the audio and video playing on your pc with the
1:28 basic idea being that if you see like a
1:31 snowy scene you'll feel blustery gusts of wind and if there's a fiery explosion
1:37 you'll feel a hot blast so uh riley
1:41 how'd that work well so there's an intake fan at the back air is deflected
1:45 with a plate to either pass through a heating element inside or to avoid it
1:50 before exiting through this beautiful front nozzle now the vortex has a
1:54 desktop app that uses what whirlwind effect calls the ex algorithm to monitor
2:00 and analyze the audio waveform which informs the intensity of the wind blast
2:07 the video meanwhile informs how hot or cold the air will be
2:11 the orange and red in fire and explosions translate to heat while
2:15 bluish colors translate to cold i mean
2:18 that's really cool but you didn't actually tell me does it work um i mean
2:25 sort of you uh you should probably try for
2:28 yourself to be honest okay yeah get in here all right i'm
2:32 ready to get immersed oh yeah get em well okay so this is just kinda smells
2:37 like electronicsy or rubbery yeah i thought that would go away
2:42 or it smells like really it smells like one of those cheap heaters you know so
2:45 this is not a great first impression
2:48 all right i'm gonna i'm opening up my mind okay i'm closing these earphones
2:52 and opening up my mind so so this is their demo video this is the demo video
2:57 and it works like as soon as you make something full screen then the ex
3:01 algorithm will start like okay now it's analyzing okay so this is best case
3:05 scenario this is best case scenario according to the makers of the vortex
3:12 i've got to give credit where credit is due yeah it does feel more like i am
3:16 outside right right and so watch this part watch this part
3:20 that slows down when it slows down in slow motion and it gets going again
3:26 oh oh wipeout sort of there is definitely
3:30 a legitimate difference in in feeling yeah
3:35 this should be
3:38 blasting past your head yeah hugely like
3:41 a kind of uh and it's just kind of a gentle breeze i mean
3:45 a gentle breeze is better than nothing that's true
3:49 very true in much the same way that you know force feedback through a controller
3:53 was considered revolutionary for gaming even though obviously you know
3:58 a slap shot feels different from right in your hands
4:02 it's like it's blowing only at one side of my face though
4:06 yeah that's yeah part of the problem
4:12 okay okay so clearly the solution is two
4:16 of them i'm my eyes are drying out though
4:19 and i've only been here for like three minutes yeah how does batman fight
4:23 superman that's stupid okay batman has and he's dead now he's human
4:29 yeah again it's not really picking up on the correct intensity because it just
4:32 kind of relies on the movement of the screen itself
4:37 and it's just kind of going yeah you're outside there's probably a breeze
4:40 do we here can i can i try an actual game yeah okay so i'm getting air blown
4:45 at me getting some warm air blown at me yeah
4:48 lots of warmness yep i'm running along there's some air
4:51 blowing at me okay i'm standing next to fire standing in the face standing
4:55 don't kill yourself getting a little hotter do you feel like you're actually
4:58 fighting demons on a hell-infested mars the smell is kind of
5:03 distracting i mean it kind of smells like burning
5:08 i don't feel like there's a strong connection
5:12 between the air bursts right the action
5:15 on the screen and that can almost make it feel like you you're reminded that
5:18 you're not in the game world you're sitting at a desk
5:23 pretending to be the doom guy you're not actually the doom guy you
5:27 know what do you know what's in my mouth i am the doom guy okay hey that's fine man
5:32 you live your life so is this the part where you make fun of my rocket league skills no
5:37 ah there was some wind
5:41 wow see that's kind of interesting when when the the explosion when you get to a
5:46 goal it's like it blew a thing at me watch this watch it a little bit
5:50 yeah love the vortex embrace the vortex
5:55 now it's time to really enter the matrix
5:59 immerse yourself that that matrix reference is so
6:03 so now and edgy well what are you ready player ready player one i was just gonna
6:08 ah i've actually never played this game before um yeah throw it yeah um grab
6:14 that that grab that
6:17 you gotta go slower man go slower why would i go slower cause time moves as
6:21 fast as you do so i could just
6:34 there you go
6:38 i can't believe i've never played this game i know it's awesome
6:43 the doodad is not contributing in any meaningful way whatsoever
6:49 maybe part of it is that i'm standing further than you were yeah it's not it
6:53 might be but also you said you felt it it's not super or hot and this is this
6:57 is consistent with what so in response to my own question does
7:02 the vortex increase immersion
7:06 well it does something does something um the first
7:10 time you watch a video or play a game there's you're gonna have a
7:15 whoa cool moment or like maybe a whoa
7:19 warm breeze moment um and it's at its
7:22 best when there's a sudden change in scenery that's accompanied by a blast of
7:27 air and there are more than one
7:31 moments when it actually works pretty well but the issue is that we found that
7:37 while actually gaming like not just watching the vortex demo reel 2018
7:43 whirlwinds detection engine just isn't smart enough to tell the
7:48 difference between stepping out of a cave into the icy air
7:52 and flipping on a light switch so it mostly
7:56 translates into bursts of air being sent at your head every time you
8:01 move your view from side to side which
8:04 makes a little bit of sense there's like a little bit of wind on my face when i move my hair the issue is that for every
8:09 time the wind syncs up with what's happening on screen there are three to
8:14 17 instances where it doesn't like an event will occur where you would expect
8:19 to have a corresponding blast of warm or cold air and it's not there and then
8:23 other times you'll feel air on your face when you shouldn't like when you're
8:27 driving a car flying an aircraft also i should hope
8:31 that you don't feel air on your face when you're in a starfighter because
8:34 then something is definitely wrong because you're in space
8:38 yeah so yeah for the most part it just feels like gaming with a fan on like an
8:44 oscillating fan that's blowing at you from one side which can actually cause a
8:48 bit of cognitive dissonance
8:52 when the explosion is happening over on the other side since the vortex
8:57 is supposed to make gaming more immersive i guess one thing we haven't
9:00 addressed yet is motion sickness so the feeling of motion sickness is apparently
9:05 caused by a mismatch between what a player is experiencing in game and in
9:10 real life so edzel one of our editors here gets motion sickness from using vr
9:16 normally so we had him playing a racing game with the vortex and his verdict
9:23 it might be a little better and then for comparison's sake we had him play the
9:27 game again with a regular fan blowing at him and he said that that was just as
9:33 good bummer looks like they probably could have saved themselves some r d
9:38 now for the sake of science since the vortex apparently uses colors to inform
9:42 the wind temperature to a certain degree we wondered whether we could game the
9:46 system by displaying full screen solid colors so what we did what is just
9:52 bring up a full screen
9:56 you know light blue solid color but switching between light blue and orange
10:01 didn't consistently change the temperature instead like before
10:05 we simply got a burst of air whenever the screen changed
10:09 so air temperature does change between hot and cold when an actual scene is
10:13 displayed so there does seem to be some aspect of the algorithm that informs
10:17 that change other than just color so maybe that's whirlwind fx's
10:22 actual end game to use the vortex as a
10:26 development tool to continue to refine their sensing technology something that
10:31 does have potential like um i've done this bird simulator thing in vr where
10:36 the changing fan blowing in front of you really affects the way that you perceive
10:40 your rate of movement through the air but it should be noted that that's with
10:45 a custom built experience like there's a whole rig that you strap yourself into
10:50 with a game that's specifically built for it and it's unlikely that we're
10:54 gonna see that kind of integration with mainstream games any time soon so should
11:00 you get this for me i'm gonna say no
11:04 not unless you've got 120 bucks burning a hole in your pocket and you just
11:09 desperately need some kind of air ejection device to put it out
11:16 riley do you have any closing thoughts no sorry i can't talk i'm too immersed
11:19 right now i'm very immersed so thanks for watching guys if you disliked this
11:23 video you can hit that button but if you liked it hit like get subscribed and
11:27 maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff we featured at the link in the video description not that we're like
11:33 recommending it in this case also down there is a link to our merch store which
11:36 has cool shirts like
11:42 this one and our community forum which you should totally join there's a bug in riley's
11:47 computer like a big one gotta fix this bug asap
11:50 hi hey
