0:00 on multiple occasions we have tried liquid cooling a computer with the
0:04 cheapest parts we could find be they from ebay or the local hardware store
0:10 but the problem always comes back to this building a loop with parts designed for
0:16 something else like say using an aquarium pump is pretty jank
0:22 so we endeavored to track down some parts that are actually designed
0:27 for cooling pcs but are as inexpensive as the
0:32 non-purpose-built stuff and thanks to the power of aliexpress
0:37 they are finally here and a total mess
0:50 origin pc offers beautiful custom desktops and laptops such as their evo
0:54 15s that weighs only 4.3 pounds and is under an inch thick featuring smooth 144
0:59 hertz 1080p or 4k displays and an NVIDIA
1:03 GeForce gtx 1070 max q be sure to check them out at the link below the first
1:08 step on our journey was of course to source the parts
1:12 and because of that the surprises actually started early on i mean little
1:16 did i know that there is a massive
1:19 market of off-brand water cooling gear
1:22 like brands i've never heard of like cis cooling and uh
1:27 barrow and my two fang
1:31 and some of it surprisingly like actually looks pretty legit
1:36 so naturally we did what any sane person would do and ordered a freaking
1:43 whack ton of it like a whole bunch of them including a few parts that i would
1:47 describe as decent looking and a few that were
1:51 not so much just sort of like a like a auto shoddy approach
1:55 you know fire at the wall and see what sticks so once we had everything on order
2:00 i figured yeah okay probably like a month for free delivery on a boat from
2:05 china right wrong so we actually ordered most of the
2:11 parts back in september of 2017
2:15 and the last one arrived in january of this year
2:20 so needless to say that was quite the setback
2:25 while we waited we also ended up buying a couple more odds and ends like uh
2:29 which radiators are you talking about these radiators
2:32 like these radiators and a couple of pumps so that's why it has taken us
2:37 until july almost an entire year
2:41 to actually make this video so like
2:44 yay free international shipping you get
2:47 what you pay for and what exactly is it that we did get
2:51 Jake like do i why do i just like go through this stuff yeah go for it holy
2:55 crap look at this thing so this is just a copper plate
3:00 a piece of plexi uh a gasket that doesn't even seem to be
3:05 made of like any kind of malleable like soft material this is
3:10 hard plastic and it's just a straight up like flat piece of copper on the bottom
3:16 this one is based on a very similar
3:19 design if you can call a flat piece of proper
3:24 design this one's almost the same
3:28 this is the same thing this is the same thing with a different
3:31 bracket this bracket is stupider so i guess
3:35 these guys are the the engineers of the
3:38 dumps class okay but then these look all right
3:43 the postings on the internet they don't give you that great description of what
3:46 you're getting these guys went to school
3:50 uh and this one actually looks not bad too so these are both kind of pin array
3:55 style blocks that again are based on very similar
3:58 designs so they are direction agnostic they just go in pass through some fins
4:03 and then come out so is that all the CPU blocks oh yeah okay let's kind of this one looks ballin
4:09 how much was this i think it's like 15 bucks 15 bucks it's cheap wow i mean and
4:15 not including these ek of course right but like that's not a performance nickel
4:19 plated these pumps look pretty freaking sketch
4:23 though like look at this thing
4:26 it's got some weight to it so i will give it that it's got some weight too
4:30 it's not just a fragile little piece of trash but i don't know that that's
4:34 necessarily meaningful so like these two are basically the same just a different
4:37 top you see this a lot when you order stuff from china where this is the same
4:42 company it's like designs that are clearly you know
4:47 borrowing from each other or straight up produced at the same factory and then
4:51 just rebranded with like
4:55 chinese companies rebranding chinese products in the same way that like
5:00 international companies just rebrand chinese products
5:04 so it turns out these radios are actually aluminum
5:08 okay so heads up for you guys you don't want to mix metals aluminum plus copper
5:14 equals corrosion but the good news is that we did follow
5:18 up the aluminum radiator orders like sometimes when you're ordering stuff from china you don't even know exactly
5:23 what it is like one of the uh one thing we thought was a block
5:27 is just an led to go in a block
5:31 so you can get copper and brass radiators with just aluminum fins that
5:35 don't touch the water for like five bucks more even if you're going the
5:38 aliexpress water cooling route spend the extra five bucks now one thing you might
5:42 notice that we didn't order any of is fittings and reservoirs and the reason
5:47 for that is that while there are some really cheap options out there
5:52 they don't affect performance so using them in this kind of a test where we're
5:55 evaluating the performance serves no purpose other than to have more
5:59 potential points of failure where we can
6:02 leak water onto our hardware so we just stuck with the stuff that really affects
6:05 performance like this led but how much did we pay for this
6:09 it was like five bucks five bucks but then given that we probably paid about
6:13 five bucks for this it's into one of these oh really uh
6:17 oh it's the nice one so you can actually stick so this is just leds for this for
6:22 blocks for blockers yeah okay of course no i've seen this kind of thing before
6:26 probably worth the five bucks yeah it's not bad and not fun and haul videos for
6:30 now though we need to actually test these things but before we can do that
6:35 we need something to compare our numbers again some kind of standard luckily Jake
6:40 keeps his test bench water cooled for some reason
6:43 so we can just use that this is actually
6:46 a pretty standard setup from one of the best in the biz ek water blocks so to
6:52 cool the four gigahertz 5960x we've got ek supremacy evo mated to a 360
6:57 millimeter pe series radiator and a d5 pwm pump and we're gonna crank that pump
7:03 to a hundred percent for the purposes of this test
7:07 now with the baseline test out of the way
7:11 it's time to take some of our aliexpress wonders for a spin
7:17 now we're gonna assume that if you're buying some parts super cheap from
7:21 aliexpress you're probably buying most of them
7:24 there so because of that we're gonna build the whole loop out of these parts
7:30 the only ek stuff we're using again reminder is the reservoir and the
7:34 fittings so what do you want to start with you know i was thinking i really want to
7:39 try one of these just like gross flat blocks sure but
7:43 are we gonna save that for the climax yeah okay i think we should get like a
7:47 proper do we want to do like the really legit looking yeah we can do like a
7:50 baseline of our aliexpress stuff like sure like that's what you would actually
7:53 buy yeah okay i don't think you should probably buy this but you can this is
7:58 actually like have you taken this apart and put it back together or something
8:01 because this is like not an amazing design actually from everything that i
8:05 know about water yeah and it needs like a jet plate while Jake builds up our
8:09 first aliexpress loop let's talk pricing
8:12 that ek config that we showed first with everything included would cost you a
8:16 whopping 380 dollars i know that sounds
8:19 like a lot but for custom water cooling that's not actually that outlandish now
8:25 with that said what Jake's building right now is around 90 dollars including
8:30 everything that you need about a quarter as much
8:34 okay so this is it we're on the
8:37 full aliexpress loop the the express
8:41 loop it sounds like a train or something thanks for the aliexpress loop uh with
8:45 the cis cooling scp-67f
8:48 which Jake found was pretty much the best bang for the buck and we've had ida
8:54 64's fpu test running for about 20
8:57 minutes to give it a chance to reach equilibrium and we're sitting at about
9:00 65 degrees on average pretty darn impressive for the price
9:05 really honestly not that far off our ek
9:09 setup okay now i want to see the worst case
9:13 scenario what happens when we throw this gutter trash that one's not going to fit
9:17 this okay it's the same thing this gutter trash yeah all right try find out
9:21 my favorite type of trash so it's done
9:25 loop number two is set up using one of those completely flat blocks now our
9:30 expectations for this thing
9:33 pretty freaking low most water blocks have channels cut or like
9:39 machined or something into the base to
9:43 increase their surface area because more surface area
9:46 means more heat transfer so we would
9:50 think something with negligible surface area by comparison
9:54 would perform very poorly and
9:58 now that it's been running for about 20 minutes on a 5960x
10:04 it's actually doing okay like
10:07 way way better than i expected so conclusion
10:12 time then custom water cooling has really evolved
10:16 from the days of like basement scientists with their aquarium pumps and
10:21 like you know weird hunks of metal that they got from like some one that one guy
10:26 in australia that makes them and ships them around the world or whatever to
10:30 having tons of options i mean everything from you know super high-end stuff that
10:34 would scare away most newcomers just due to the sheer cost
10:39 all the way down to thanks to the power of chinese
10:42 manufacturing and free international shipping
10:46 low end options where you can actually get
10:49 reasonable performance and that coolness
10:52 factor for about what you would pay
10:56 for an aio from a name brand
11:00 with that said the performance of your aio that would come with a warranty or
11:05 even a high-end knock to air cooler that would also come with a warranty
11:10 would also be pretty good so doing a
11:13 build like this super cool was definitely fun to experiment i'm just
11:18 not sure if we're gonna put the Linus tech tips seal of approval
11:22 especially on the pumps please don't cheap out on your pump
11:27 not recommended it's not that bad i don't recommend it
11:31 okay never recommend it well this thing would buy d5
11:35 nothing else what about ddc nothing else is acceptable no i've seen so many ddc's
11:39 failed where's my d5 what about this thing didn't someone give this to you
11:42 maybe i think so i don't know there's someone at ltx last year tx is like
11:46 tomorrow and then look i fixed it i welded it oh lordy mass drop is back with another
11:52 deal this time on the sennheiser open backed hd hd58x jubilee headphones these
11:58 were tuned by axelgrell met him
12:02 super cool for like an engineering german dude by the way of sennheiser and
12:07 massdrop based on feedback from the community they feature new 150 ohm
12:12 drivers and a colorway inspired by the
12:15 hd 580s they're clear fast with a dynamic sound profile and they've got a
12:20 glossy black headband elliptical earcups and replaceable soft velour ear pads
12:25 they've got a detachable six foot cable and you can get yours today at the link
