0:00 i loved the galaxy s6 active but
0:03 aside from being kind of a frump compared to its much hotter cousin the
0:07 s6 it lacked a fingerprint sensor at a time
0:11 when that was the next big thing to have
0:15 for quick secure authentication the next generation of active integrated
0:19 a fingerprint reader with the clicky home button for a truly no compromises
0:24 experience though except the regular s7's killer new
0:28 feature was ip68 water resistance removing one of the active's main
0:33 selling points that and the s7 active was really bulky
0:39 even for inactive so
0:42 as you'd probably expect this generation is full of compromises
0:47 again here we go
0:51 after the expected message from our sponsor Intel
0:55 hp's new omen x lineup comes equipped with Intel 7th generation core i7
1:00 processors check them out at the link in the video description
1:12 now in terms of the internal hardware the s8 active is every bit as worthy of
1:18 the flagship label as the s8 and the
1:21 note 8. it's got an octa-core processor four gigs of RAM 64 gigs of storage with
1:27 microsd expansion i mean you guys know the drill but it's also got a couple of
1:32 tricks up its sleeve that they don't first is the shatter resistant screen
1:38 encased in a mil standard 810g temperature dust shock and pressure
1:43 resistant enclosure and second is the
1:46 massive 4 000 milliamp hour battery
1:50 inside let's start with a closer look at the screen
1:54 this one is a bit of a mixed bag from the regular s8 it carries over the
1:59 bright accurate once configured correctly 5.8
2:03 inch 2960x1440 amoled panel the unusual eighteen and a
2:08 half by nine aspect ratio and on-screen buttons including a pressure
2:14 sensitive home instead of hardware buttons
2:17 a tough pill to swallow for some long time active fans though it wasn't a huge
2:23 deal for me i personally like the flexibility of being able to hide them
2:27 for more room for consuming vertical content
2:30 not to mention horizontal content the big screen makes the s8 active supremely
2:36 awesome for watching movies or other ultrawide aspect ratio content when
2:40 you're on the go as long as you don't mind using headphones or the in my opinion
2:46 inexcusable in 2017 mono bottom facing
2:49 speaker configuration but
2:52 if you were hoping for a shatter resistant display that also manages to
2:57 somehow wrap around the edges of the device infinity style
3:01 then you'll be sorely disappointed by the flat glass and
3:06 definitely not bezel-less 75 screen to
3:10 body ratio though again this isn't something that
3:15 bothered me that much the s8 active is
3:18 actually as big an improvement over the s7 active in terms of its screen to body
3:23 ratio as the s8 was to the s7
3:27 the bigger issue is that while both
3:31 phones use gorilla glass 5 many users are reporting that the
3:35 shatter resistant coating seems to make this one much more susceptible to micro
3:40 scratching and mine does definitely have some micro scratches
3:46 though with that said my s8 has just as many from similar use in my pocket so
3:52 take that as you will i actually have a theory that whether it's corning's batch
3:56 to batch variation or the different
3:59 configurations that oems request for it
4:03 uh their glass products are ending up with the same name for marketing
4:07 purposes but really different characteristics the droid turbo gen one
4:11 that i used for a year and then that taren has been using since has gorilla
4:16 glass 3 but it has almost no surface
4:20 imperfections to this day while the rest of my phones
4:24 apple and Android usually end up scuffed to hell by pocket lint within a few days
4:29 anyway i digress let's talk about the second big selling point of this phone
4:33 the battery even as a pretty heavy user i managed
4:37 only once to kill the s8 active in a single day and that was only because i
4:42 subjected it to over six hours of simultaneous gps navigation and wi-fi
4:48 hotspot sharing during an all-day on-location shoot down in seattle
4:53 this is by far my favorite thing about active phones i mean i still end up
4:58 charging every night but most people would easily get two days or more with
5:04 some of the clever power saving features in the Android 7 nougat version of
5:08 samsung experience but wait a second don't active phones
5:13 have a third awesome selling point ah yes
5:16 the programmable button on the left that wait what the
5:20 it's a bixby button just like the rest of samsung's current lineup now
5:24 i mean at least they let you disable it for accidental presses now but i'm still
5:28 gonna copy-paste my usual spiel about how they should allow native
5:34 reprogramming you know like they used to
5:38 speaking of copy paste the camera including the front-facing iris scanner
5:43 that i still don't find as fast or reliable as the fingerprint reader is
5:47 literally copy-pasted from the galaxy s8 and that's a good thing i never noticed
5:52 any difference in image quality or launch times on the rear 12 megapixel
5:56 camera that records 4k video at up to 30 FPS
6:00 and while it doesn't have a dual sensor
6:03 system like the note 8 for optical zoom or fake bokeh which i'll be calling foca
6:08 from now on honestly that matters way less to me these days
6:14 than a quality front-facing camera and this one gets me better results than
6:18 even the iphone 8. i mean it's not like i take a bunch of selfies with my
6:22 duckface friends in the club or whatever but when i'm hanging out with my kids i
6:27 end up capturing a lot more moments thanks to the wider angle lens and it's
6:32 decent low light performance just remember before you use it make
6:36 sure you turn off all the cheesy face shaping and skin smoothing effects
6:41 now let's talk gripes
6:45 the samsung experience on this phone is not the smoothest experience
6:51 this device crashes more than every other phone that i've reviewed
6:56 combined it's not every day or anything but it's
7:00 too much everything from random reboots to
7:05 the screen staying on with the clock stops so clearly not working until i
7:09 hard reset to the phone clearly being
7:12 working like it'll lock and unlock with the buttons but the touchscreen is
7:16 totally unresponsive until i hard reset it
7:19 and before you ask i checked a t site to
7:22 make sure that i was running the latest software so
7:26 samsung an update would be super swell
7:30 and while you're at it you can't move an expanded list around
7:35 on me while i am swiping stuff away from it
7:38 and fix this one too when you hit the fingerprint sensor
7:42 which i still don't like on the back by the way see
7:46 there you go that's what it's supposed to do dump you on the home screen
7:50 perfect but if you hit it sometimes when the
7:54 phone isn't actually locked for some reason
7:58 i then have to swipe before i can see the home screen
8:03 why would i want that i mean it's not like it matters that
8:07 much the instability that i've experienced already rules this phone out
8:11 as a daily driver for me but if that could be fixed
8:15 i otherwise really like it it's like it's like a dog that's smart
8:20 friendly playful and pees on your stuff
8:24 it just needs a little bit more work
8:28 speaking of needing a little bit more work if you were just thinking you know
8:33 my phone needs a little bit more work i want to spend some time making it look
8:37 awesome and making it resistant to scuffs and scratches well dbrand has got
