0:00 between the nan flash shortages dram price fixing and the GPU mining boom and
0:05 subsequent bust 2018 has been one heck of a ride but now
0:11 as the holidays approach it's looking like a fantastic time all of a sudden to
0:15 build a new gaming pc and it's my job to
0:19 find the best deals at five hundred dollars a thousand dollars and two
0:24 thousand dollars for you so naturally i didn't do it i had
0:30 Anthony do it but it's okay he did a great job
0:34 speaking of great our sponsor ifixit give the gift of fixing this holiday
0:38 season with ifixit's pro-tech toolkit visit ifixit.com forward slash Linus at
0:43 the link below and get yours today
0:54 before we begin a note about our part selections we decided not to use sale
0:59 pricing except where components are more or less perpetually on sale where we
1:04 used the price that it was available at most often this way you guys can expect
1:09 these prices or less so if you see
1:12 better deals on these parts or on other parts go for it this video is just meant
1:17 to be a guideline so let's start with our budget just game
1:21 pc with only 500 bucks to spend every
1:25 dollar needs to contribute to gaming performance in some way and when we look
1:30 at last year's wow 2017 was rough
1:34 we just barely managed a ryzen processor
1:37 and we had a meh case with an even more meh power supply
1:42 this year we're able to use the much faster not to mention cheaper ryzen 3
1:47 2200g and this time we also get a b350 chipset
1:52 motherboard which means we can actually overclock it a little bit
1:56 now sadly we are still stuck with eight gigs of RAM but since we've got four
2:00 slots on our board we can get a dual channel kit to improve the performance
2:05 of our bandwidth hungry ryzen CPU without sacrificing future upgradability
2:10 but wait there's more this time around we swung a separate
2:14 case and 80 plus bronze power supply with its own three-year warranty and for
2:19 storage well this was kind of a no-brainer so our sshd unfortunately ended up almost
2:24 10 more expensive for the capacity this year
2:28 but it's fast enough that you're not gonna feel the crunch too quickly while you're
2:32 gaming so we had to make a compromise there and it was a worthwhile one
2:37 because you will be gaming we're picking up a Radeon rx 570 this year the four
2:42 gig model of course but that gtx 1050 ti
2:46 from yesteryear is finally gone and we've got performance more akin to a gtx
2:51 1060 three gig this is one of those it's
2:54 always on sale cases because newegg claims it's on sale but looking at the
2:58 pricing history it's been on sale for the entire month of november and it sold
3:02 for not much more going all the way back to october so the heavens have opened up
3:06 and smiled upon the budget gamers this year because by our math you can grab
3:10 this setup for just over 501 on newegg
3:14 or just under 500 if you spread your purchases to other vendors
3:18 moving on we've got our game now mid-range pc
3:23 and last year we were in pretty rough shape on this one too if i'm being
3:26 honest yeah we managed to Ryzen five but it was a quad core this year we're
3:31 up to six cores thanks to the most versatile CPU in our recent CPU buyer's
3:37 guide the ryzen 5 2600 which
3:40 it's even it's even five dollars cheaper by the way thanks AMD
3:44 and what's more we're able to get proper ddr4 3200 memory to feed the beast for
3:51 less than what we paid for 2400 megahertz last year i am so glad that
3:56 whole RAM thing is over this time for our boot drive we're sticking with
4:00 solid-state storage and this is crazy we
4:03 are getting double the capacity this time around for five dollars less making
4:08 this easily the biggest SSD that this segment has ever been able to afford an
4:13 extra bonus is that at one terabyte you're not going to have to burn as many
4:18 erase cycles swapping games around to fit in a more confined SSD and it's even
4:23 m.2 moving on our case doesn't have a window
4:27 to show off the clean interior but the Corsair carbide 270r offers both build
4:32 quality and creature comfort improvements over the thermaltake versa
4:36 complete with easier to clean removable dust filters and then going into it is
4:41 the bigger 650 watt variant of the evga
4:44 b3 power supply that we used last year giving us a bit of room to upgrade later
4:49 on remember guys this is evga's like actually good even though it's 80 plus
4:53 bronze psu line and it should serve you well for years to come
4:58 finally we also picked up a gtx 1070 ti
5:02 for a cool 20 less than we paid for the 1070 that got us through the last two
5:07 years by the way it's not likely that these things will stick around for too much
5:11 longer the existing 10 series stock is slowly but surely disappearing from the
5:15 top down so either move fast or hopefully the rtx gtx whatever it is
5:20 2060 ends up being a decent replacement only time will tell what we do know
5:25 right now though is that in total this build weighed in at a hair over a grand
5:29 but that's less than five percent of the budget and many of these parts regularly
5:33 go on sale and it's freaking awesome so happy shopping
5:37 finally we haven't forgotten about you mega ballers out there you so for you
5:41 guys we've got the game on high-end gaming rig which at two thousand dollars
5:46 should last you quite a while now looking at every other year's game on
5:51 build you might think that us going from an hedt or high-end desktop socket down
5:57 to a core i7 on the consumer socket is a
6:00 downgrade and in terms of pci express
6:03 lanes you'd be right but in terms of processing power we're actually gaining
6:09 two cores that are each faster than any
6:13 previous CPU that we've used in these builds which more than makes up for
6:17 their lower thread count due to the loss of hyper threading
6:21 we also lose quad channel memory but we keep our 32 gigs of ddr4 3200 RAM this
6:28 time in the form of a dual channel kit that leaves two slots open for future
6:31 expansion our storage improvement this time around
6:34 is in picking up the SSD that we used in our game now build the wd blue one
6:39 terabyte m.2 SATA which gives us one terabyte of fast storage to go along
6:43 with our four terabytes of 5400 RPM spinning iron so the os and commonly
6:48 used apps and games go on the SSD and the longer term storage and lesser used
6:52 games go on the hard drive with plenty of room on both or you can even check
6:55 out a software caching solution like primocash split up your SSD and kind of
6:59 divide and conquer that way now we're keeping our sea sonic 80 plus
7:03 gold power supply and our knock to a cooler from last year because they're
7:07 great deals and the cooler in particular is good enough to handle quite a bit
7:11 more than our core i7 9700k can put out and then for our case we've splurged on
7:16 the tempered glass Corsair crystal 460x with all of its RGB goodness
7:21 now in light of the case choice some folks might prefer a liquid cooler for
7:25 aesthetics but just be prepared to spend a little extra for the privilege to get
7:29 comparable cooling capacity to what we've already got
7:32 which leads us then to our most controversial pick this time
7:36 around last year we practically begged AMD and
7:40 NVIDIA to give us a solid upgrade of some sort so maybe next year we'll get a
7:46 2 000 system that's worth upgrading to from our 2016 model
7:50 like can we AMD and NVIDIA if we're really good
7:55 and we've got it the rtx 2070 yes i know
7:59 rtx is nowhere near worth it at this time but that doesn't mean that the rtx
8:04 2070 isn't a good graphics card it's
8:08 just an overpriced graphics card and by the
8:12 time we wrote up this buyer's guide brand new stock of gtx 1080s and 1080
8:17 ti's was essentially depleted
8:20 so unless you want to buy those used which by the way is a valid option one
8:24 that we'd recommend these guides only include products that
8:28 you can buy brand new in a store so this is the best performance for gaming that
8:33 we could get into this price bracket and it ain't bad for productivity either
8:38 on that subject this video is about gaming pcs and of course that was the
8:42 goal but as it turns out all of our builds across the board ended up pretty
8:47 well balanced for either gaming or productivity tasks and we ended up
8:52 inadvertently following some of our own advice from our recent CPU buyer's guide
8:57 so as it always is with custom pcs the sky
9:01 is the limit in terms of configurability but we think that our rigs make a great
9:06 starting point for almost anyone who isn't looking for a hyper specialized
9:11 build so now we'll wrap up then with full disclosure time we don't get any
9:16 kickbacks for manufacturers for our holiday buyer's guide parts but what we
9:20 do get is a commission if you buy them using the links below so if you're in
9:24 the market go ahead and check them out it truly is a great time to buy a pc
9:30 especially a value one 2018 was like a real roller coaster of pricing and
9:35 availability but here we are finally at the end of it with a tangible
9:39 improvement across the board over previous years so may your holidays be
9:44 filled with tech and gaming cheer is this even visible in the frame let's
9:48 bring some springs holiday cheer yeah
9:52 and may your holidays also be filled with screwdriver kits ifixit's manta kit
9:58 has 112 steel bits comes complete with standard bits like phillips and flathead
10:02 but also torques tripoint and game bits as well and includes not one but two
10:06 aluminum screwdriver handles a hefty quarter inch drive for full size
10:10 applications and a smaller four millimeter for precision work both
10:13 drivers feature magnetic bit sockets knurled grips and silky smooth spinning
10:17 tops and all ifixit tools are backed by a lifetime warranty so if something
10:21 breaks they'll fix it for free that is how warranties work
