0:00 to start this build blog Luke and I wanted to come up with the perfect
0:04 symbol for how well we work together we brainstormed and debated and eventually
0:08 we decided peanut butter and
0:28 jelly
0:58 he
1:18 and I think we all knew how that was
1:22 going to end so uh we were on our way
1:25 back inside feeling dirty and a little ashamed when we realized the answer was
1:29 was staring Us in the face all along we go together like an SSD and a hard drive
1:36 the ultimate Tag
1:43 Team all right cheesy opening skit thing
1:48 did you say cheese wow no thank
1:55 you aside that all aside the point of
2:00 today's build blog although this won't be news to anyone who's been watching
2:03 our channel for the last couple of years is some things like an SSD and a hard
2:08 drive are just better together so to
2:11 educate people about this idea of ssds
2:14 and hard drives being a match made in heaven like PB&J WD launched their dream
2:20 machine for good promotion on a couple of popular online communities getting
2:24 members of ABS form and AV Forum to submit their ideas for a dream machine
2:29 and then giving us the opportunity to draw a configuration from the dozens of
2:34 submissions build it and donate it to a local school to give the students there
2:38 the tools that they need to develop their skills as videographers
2:42 photographers digital artists animators you name it so we drew Askin 7's
2:47 configuration and today Luke and I are going to build up that config that he or
2:51 she submitted with a couple of small tweaks we upgraded the motherboard to an
2:55 x99 Deluxe due to availability of the
2:58 one that he selected ask and 7's configuration was definitely one of the
3:02 better balanced ones that struck a solid Middle Ground between some of the other
3:06 configs that were either total Dream Machines that only made sense in dreams
3:11 or super mundane rigs that wouldn't feel like we were really building an ultimate
3:15 workstation for the students to use we did end up making a couple of tweaks to
3:19 the config so the motherboard had to be changed I already mentioned that the 4
3:23 tab WD green storage Drive was upgraded to two brand spanking new 6 tbte models
3:29 courtesy of WD for a total of 12 terab of storage and the monitor was changed
3:34 to a personal favorite of mine the ASUS pb278q because the one the post called
3:39 for was a little bit over the top for our config I really liked the choice of
3:44 the defin R5 for the case for a lot of Gamers something flashier might have
3:48 made more sense but even though this is definitely a capable machine for games I
3:52 mean it's got a GTX 980 in it the intended use is in a classroom so it
3:57 should be extremely quiet and it shouldn't look super flashy with side
4:01 panel Windows and LED lights all over the place I like the choice of the Intel
4:05 Core i7 5820k if this was a gaming rig I might
4:09 question the wisdom of spending the extra money on six processing cores and
4:13 ddr4 versus a more practical quad core DDR3 machine but since it's much more
4:18 likely to be used for Content creation than 3D games the extra couple of
4:22 processing cores will save a lot of time in the long run for whoever is using it
4:27 16 gigs of RAM might not seem like like much right now but with the way ddr4 is
4:32 going to drop in price over the next year or two it made sense to go light on
4:36 the RAM and then upgrade it later on down the road when the cost per capacity
4:40 is much lower and when you're sure that the extra RAM is actually going to be
4:44 used speaking of cost per capacity our configuration includes a 512 gig 850 Pro
4:51 SSD and those two six terab WD green
4:54 drives that I mentioned before for mass storage the 850 Pro is super fast and
4:59 that's where we'll install the Windows 8.1 operating system but it's also a
5:04 $500 drive for a mere half a terabyte of
5:08 storage not really an appropriate price per gig for storing large video files or
5:13 anything else that takes up a lot of space and doesn't directly benefit from
5:17 the faster random reads and wrs of an SSD so that's where our hard drives come
5:21 in each of these 6 terab drives costs about half as much as that single 512
5:27 gig SSD for 12 times as much storage
5:32 each so about 12th the cost per gig
5:35 overall actually a little bit less than that so we'll store large programs here
5:39 and they can also be divvied up amongst all the different students who work on
5:43 the machine so that they all have enough space to store their projects without
5:47 worrying about running out of room but there are actually some little tricks to
5:51 help you get the most out of an SSD and hard drive configuration so for those of
5:56 you at home changing your default installation directories for programs
6:00 like steam origin and Uplay to the hard
6:03 drive rather than to the SSD will save you the trouble of changing it every
6:08 single time you can also change things like your my documents and my videos
6:13 folders to remap them to the hard drive and then Windows every time you go and
6:17 look for those folders will automatically redirect you to your mass
6:21 storage you can utilize programs like space sniffer a personal favorite to
6:25 keep your SSD space freed up it gives you a nice little visual representation
6:30 of everything that's on your SSD so you can figure out what you need and what
6:33 you don't and another little tip is when
6:37 you're defragging when you're running regular system maintenance you do want
6:40 to defrag your hard drive in order to get the sequential files as close
6:45 together to each other as you possibly can versus having the little bits of
6:49 them scattered all over the place but never defrag an SSD it's actually bad
6:55 for it a tip that's not specific to SSD and hard drive dual Drive users is
7:00 encrypting your drives Windows security is pretty easy to break but to protect
7:05 your files it's definitely worthwhile to encrypt things and Guys these are just a
7:09 few of the ways that you can keep your system optimized if you have some
7:13 specific questions the best thing to do would be to direct you to the Linus Tech
7:17 tips Forum thread Linked In the video description where you can actually ask
7:21 any specific questions you have about how to make this process as seamless and
7:25 painless as possible WD is planning to have some of their Tech technical folks
7:30 in there answering questions for the next couple of weeks so whether you're
7:33 still working on your next system or you've already got a dual Drive set up
7:36 you can drop your questions in there and they'll do their best to answer you so
7:40 check that out again it's linked in the video description so that's pretty much
7:44 it for this build blog thanks to Ask and S and the rest of the folks who
7:47 submitted PC configs for us to potentially build thanks to you guys for
7:51 watching and thanks to WD for letting us be involved in this fun little project
7:55 guys like this video if you liked it dislike it if you disliked it leave a
7:58 comment letting us know if you have any sort of actually I mean hey might be a
8:02 great place to also have some discussion about your dual Drive setups also check
8:06 the other Link in the video description if you want to support us you can buy a cool t-shirt like this one you can give
8:10 us a monthly contribution or you can change your Amazon bookmark to one with
8:13 our affiliate code so every time you're buying ssds and hard drives we get a
8:16 small Kickback that kind of thing helps us out a lot thanks again for watching
8:19 and as always don't forget to
8:28 subscribe
8:40 pop that
