you may recall that we were one of the first to get our hands on an 8k monitor
0:06
it was from dell and the thing is a creator's dream thanks to its 100
0:10
coverage of the adobe RGB color space and true 10-bit color
0:15
the only problem is that come on to be truly creative especially when you've
0:19
got a bunch of different design tools and file explorers and web browsers open
0:25
you really need a multi-monitor setup
0:28
and now we have just that today we're going to be
0:33
showing off a badass workstation with not one but two 8k monitors and we're
0:39
going to be powering those things with NVIDIA's brand spanking new nine
0:45
thousand dollar quadro gv
0:48
100 and this video is brought to you by mack

1:12
so let's start by having a look at what we would consider to be basically an
1:17
ultimate workstation at this point we ended up choosing a very subdued case so
1:22
this is the Corsair 600 q and unlike a
1:26
lot of the really popular options that are out there right now it's got no RGB
1:31
no tempered glass no nothing it's just a
1:34
plain black box with a nice included fan controller and
1:39
ample room for any kind of cooling you could possibly want to put in it for our
1:44
CPU we went with obviously the core i9
1:47
7980xe so that's an 18 core processor turbo's up to 4.2 gigahertz or something
1:52
crazy like that we've got
1:55
128 gigs of g-skills tridency RGB RAM
2:01
okay yes i know it's RGB but that's not why we chose it it's just one of the
2:04
only kits that we had a 128 gig kit of for our motherboard we've gone with ASUS
2:09
ws x299 sage now we could have gone with
2:12
the ws c422 pro sc that we checked out
2:16
recently but we determined in our video covering the xeon w for the 2066
2:21
platform that the value just wasn't really there
2:25
unless you need ecc RAM and besides the
2:28
x299 sage has seven pci express slots
2:33
meaning we can put basically anything we'd want in here for our ssds we went
2:37
with two samsung 960 pros each of them
2:40
512 gig running in raid 0 and then for our power supply we went with a c sonic
2:45
80 plus titanium unit it's only 750
2:49
watts but quite frankly
2:53
quite frankly that's more than we really need anyway
2:56
bringing us to of course the centerpiece the quadro gv100 we've
3:02
only got one of these so we won't be using the nv link connections that you
3:07
can use to not only double your processing power but also share RAM
3:13
between them but for the kinds of workloads that
3:16
we're going to be able to put on this thing anyway it's improbable that we
3:20
will actually need more RAM than one of these cards has
3:24
each of them is equipped with 32 gigabytes of high-speed hbm2 memory to
3:31
go along with their 5 120 cuda cores and 640 tensor cores so
3:38
these are designed not just for your sort of traditional workstation usage
3:43
but also for ai and deep learning
3:46
applications let's go ahead and get it installed
3:50
all right now that we've got it in we can see we're going to be using every
3:54
single one of the displayport 1.4 outputs on this card because each of our
4:00
8k monitors requires two of them
4:08
okay so while we wait for this to power up i want to take you guys for a little
4:12
tour of our desk here because as you might have noticed it looks really
4:17
different from one of our more typical gaming setups because when your focus is
4:22
productivity the kind of gear that you're using needs
4:26
to be a little bit different so first of all obviously we'll get to
4:31
the visuals in a little bit here is sound
4:34
now gamers might want speakers and the
4:38
same actually goes for their headphones that
4:41
accentuate details that are important to gameplay
4:45
like say for example the frequency of footsteps so that they can pick out
4:50
where opponents are around them not so for content creators so these
4:55
here are audio engines a5 plus bookshelves they have a flatter response
5:00
curve not quite like you would consider
5:04
you know a studio monitor grade response curve but a flatter response curve and
5:09
they represent a good value because they can connect directly to your pc unlike
5:14
some other monitors that used balanced xlr inputs for example
5:19
now for audio again for the typical gamer pretty much
5:24
anything will do you can actually use your onboard audio no issues there but
5:28
we've gone with a combination from audio so yes that is what they're
5:32
actually called i know so we've got our emoji ii this is a dac and then we're
5:37
using a valhalla 2 amp that should pair really nicely with our audeze lcd 2s now
5:44
to be clear the lcd 2s are especially
5:48
now that they've been replaced by other models not necessarily the be-all and end-all
5:54
of headphones but what they are is an open-backed design giving a very natural
5:59
sound stage and they use planar magnetic drivers so
6:04
to put it in layman's terms they sound absolutely bitchin
6:10
i mean this is something else obviously
6:14
we've seen one of them before but this amount
6:19
of real estate so i mean we are scaled at 300 right now come check this out if
6:25
i change it to a hundred percent
6:29
look how small the cursor is
6:32
look how small the start button is like
6:36
here you open a web browser this is the default window size
6:46
so while unlike the early days of
6:50
monitor resolutions increasing
6:54
we don't necessarily get to benefit from it just
6:57
scaling linearly the amount of desktop realistic date that we have the pixel
7:02
density though the fineness of the image is
7:05
absolutely incredible so each of these is 7680 by 4320 meaning
7:12
that we've got a total of 67 million pixels total and of course
7:18
it's being driven at 60 hertz
7:22
like you can see individual feathers moving around i'm actually impressed
7:26
we're running this at full resolution right now is this 8k footage brandon
7:33
the computer's definitely feeling the burn check this out
7:37
82 CPU usage
7:41
but it's not buckling
7:46
not bad now that we've got a bigger project
7:50
loaded up it is definitely suffering a little bit more
7:54
but i think part of that might be a network bottleneck that's one thing that
7:58
we're still missing on this particular config but i think that we could fix
8:01
pretty easily with a 10 gig card or something along those lines
8:05
it is definitely nice to have all this real estate though like being able to
8:09
watch at the maximum size of a preview
8:13
like what is effectively probably what like a
8:16
720p video as you scrub through it like this
8:22
that's pretty incredible
8:26
check this out we can pick exactly the right moment for a thumbnail
8:30
without even ever opening it i could actually watch a video like this
8:35
oh how did it remove virus again okay boom 785 bucks i gotta say i do wish
8:41
there was a way with our building layout to reconfigure our editor's machines
8:46
so that they can use monitors like this cause like all of a sudden you can
8:51
actually feel the stereo sound where applicable
8:55
so like in the game for example and it sounds so much more natural than
9:01
when you have it pipe through headphones even really good ones
9:04
but i don't think any kind of extensive renovation like that is on the horizon
9:09
anytime soon and
9:12
neither is an upgrade to dual 8k monitors and a5 pluses for all of our
9:17
editors anyway so
9:20
yeah unless of course
9:25
we can do it with the help of sponsors like freshbooks freshbooks is the small
