0:00
so after all these weeks I finally have a package that is to say a package in
0:06
the mail with a whole bunch of really cool stuff in it what's that lonus
0:10
bubble wrap no this is my followup for
0:14
the Silverstone design a new headphone
0:19
stand for lonus competition so I have I
0:24
believe it is 13 3D printed headphone stands designs
0:30
from members of the lonus tech tips Community to try out today and declare a
0:35
winner that Silverstone will be using their manufacturing prowess to turn into
0:40
a finished product of this quality so uh
0:44
I am really looking forward to this let's see how it
0:57
goes so you guys probably know cable mod cables we featured them in a lot of our
1:01
build guides and build logs well hey now they have support for Corsair RMI and
1:06
rmx series power supplies check out the link in the video description to check
1:10
that
1:15
out oo that one's cool so while I'm
1:18
finishing unwrapping these I'll give you guys a little bit of the uh history of
1:22
the Journey of how these 3D printed headphone stands got to be here we
1:27
received literally hundreds of submissions and I'm talking even if you
1:33
exclude the penis shaped ones for this design contest some of which were
1:38
excellent some of which were not as excellent but the ones that you see here
1:43
before you are the cream of the crop so my mini Factory that's actually their
1:48
contribution to this whole thing 3D printed every single design that was
1:52
submitted then it was sent back to us to pick our favorite ones which were
1:57
printed in high quality at full scale to
2:00
be sent to me to evaluate and determine
2:04
which ones would be the well which one
2:07
would be the winner because everyone whose design is in front of me on the
2:10
table actually gets a copy of the winning design but only the person who
2:16
submitted the winning design gets an anodized gold color version of it along
2:21
with the other two colors of it so let's
2:25
uh let's get started here and figure out the the pros and cons of of each of
2:29
these different headphone stand designs all right so the basic process that I'm
2:32
going to be going through is I will be finding all the parts based on the
2:37
original model submitted on my minifactory so you can actually check
2:40
this out something that's cool is you guys can actually download these and
2:45
print them anytime you want off of my minifactory
2:59
phones as a quick test to uh see kind of
3:03
how how it is really functionally in the real world so since I'm holding this one
3:08
why don't I start with this one from Wall-E
3:13
H so pros and cons of Wall's design the
3:18
split construction means that it's going to be relatively easy to
3:23
manufacture so you just build two pieces
3:27
and then join them with a screw in the middle here making it also very compact
3:31
to package and ship the simple elegant
3:35
design I actually find quite appealing and I
3:38
think matches fairly well with the
3:41
design language that Silverstone is already using on their existing
3:45
headphone stand product the one thing that I don't really like about this one
3:49
is something that's going to be common with a lot of the other designs and that's that there's no real thought
3:55
given to where to manage the cord something that's less of an issue on a
4:00
desktop mounted stand where it can sit on the table um than it is on a
4:04
wallmounted design where it simply will fall down to the
4:10
floor okay this is a really nice design
4:13
it looks like three or four pieces to construct so there will be some assembly
4:18
required but what I like about this one is the nice gentle Arch that holds the
4:24
headphones the fact that it has a lip to prevent them from falling off if you
4:28
know I don't know neighbor bangs on the wall on the other side or whatever else
4:32
you don't want your headphones to come tumbling down and it has an integrated
4:36
knob for keeping your cables out of the way even the extraordinarily long cable
4:42
on the HD 650s here was able to be
4:46
managed oh this is kind of cool actually there's uh I didn't even notice this
4:50
before but there is a little holder on the right hand side to actually route
4:55
the cable cleanly up to the knob as well
4:58
so it doesn't just kind of hang H over the side like that very nice so this
5:02
design is from Patrick
5:05
Brower okay so this design from Brian
5:08
Pearson is a little bit different from the rest of them for a couple of reasons
5:12
number one is points off for not really
5:15
giving any thought to the mounting mechanism for it I had to just use
5:20
double-sided tape and I guess he figured Silverstone would sort that out which is
5:24
not entirely unfair but um definitely
5:28
something that's nice to see people consider uh but the other main
5:31
difference is that Brian's design seems to mostly consider uh portable
5:37
headphones like smaller headphones like the kinds uh that you're looking at here
5:41
this is a pair of Sennheiser momentum 2.0's now there was some thought given
5:46
to cable management but I'm not really a
5:49
huge fan of the approach because it
5:52
doesn't really hold it very well and while I can see that I think this is to
5:57
hold the connector right here uh it gives it a bit of a messy look on the
6:02
wall so I would have liked to see a little bit more consideration for that
6:08
in this design this next design from
6:11
Matt selck definitely wins points for
6:14
Elegance I actually really like the shield style wall plate uh the support
6:19
brace here while not necessary when
6:23
we're talking hanging headphones off a piece of aluminum I think looks really
6:26
good and it'll be appealing to folks who
6:29
own both small and larger headphones but
6:33
the things that I think are missing in this design are that I'd like to see the wall plate be a little bit bigger and I
6:39
would also like to see more thought given to uh Cable Management yes a
6:44
recurring theme I know so this design is
6:49
from I'm going to say Yorn okay I tried well either way there
6:54
were a couple things that I really liked about it number one is it has like kind
6:58
of a Starship Enterprise esque look to it not quite sure how that happened but
7:03
definitely the inner geeken me appreciates it number two is clear
7:07
thought has been given not only to how you can hang small lightweight
7:11
headphones looks great by the way but also large heavier headphones because it
7:17
gets the holder far enough away from the wall that it's not going to bump against
7:21
anything I also do like the fact that it
7:24
has an integrated cable management system where you can wrap it around the
7:28
wall plate but there were a couple of things that didn't appeal to me that
7:32
much as well I think the wall plate could have been larger this would have
7:36
made Cable Management a little bit easier and improv the Aesthetics and I
7:41
think that the support shaft really doesn't look that great with larger
7:46
headphones on it so the design could have stood to be a little bit beefier
7:50
overall but this one's a really really solid
7:53
offering so this design from Steven
7:57
flaven intrigued me more than anything
8:00
else and I really really had to see it in person basically there's a couple of
8:05
different things going on here not all of which are apparent when just looking
8:09
at the 3D model picture so number one is
8:12
that with a little popping thing here you can
8:16
actually fold it down in the event that you don't feel like storing your
8:19
headphones on it and you can restore it to its locked status here and number two
8:24
is that while it appeared as though this
8:28
bottom piece could um be raised in the
8:34
model it doesn't actually seem to account for that in the design so I was
8:38
kind of thinking it was a double layered design but if you look at where it lines
8:42
up it would be it would interfere with the top headphones anyway so while I
8:46
definitely like the sort of the the folding down concept here I think due to
8:52
manufacturing difficulties as much as anything else uh this one's not going to
8:57
be coming away with the prize but definitely like the idea this design
9:01
from Michael I actually I think I liked it a little bit more in the renders it's
9:06
got kind of a cool Contour thing going
9:09
on very very artsy but in terms of
9:13
practicality it doesn't have a very broad surface for the top of the
9:17
headphones to rest on so it's actually going to Dent the headphone padding
9:21
there a little bit not much thought really given to cable management but I
9:25
do like I do like what Michael was going for here in terms of the look and how
9:30
it'll look on the wall when it doesn't have headphones on it in fact I think I like this one better without the
9:34
headphones on it which is a little bit unique so our next design here is one
9:38
that I actually really like this one from Matthew Vidal a lot of thought
9:43
given to mounting on this one so you go ahead and you screw in the rear plate
9:47
then the top piece locks into place from the top very simple design very elegant
9:54
looking headphones go on like so again
9:57
points off for no real thought given to cable management but I love the
10:02
Simplicity I love the uh the lip at the edge so that the headphones aren't going
10:06
to slip off by accident love the spacing Off the Wall just right to have the
10:11
headphones like sitting right in the middle and not banging up against the wall really do really do like this one
10:16
from from Matthew here all right so we got Matthew's design here which is a
10:20
folding kind of this looked better in
10:24
the render but I'm sure Silverstone would replace that with like their logo
10:27
or something but it's a folding design that actually has the benefit of being
10:31
able to tuck the top piece it doesn't go all the way in because of the
10:35
scaffolding of the 3D printing but you can see here it would basically go all
10:38
the way inside when you're not using it or all you do is slide this piece
10:43
through locks into place and boom you
10:46
put your headphones on just a little something like that and this is cool too
10:51
you can use that space in the top that you can
10:54
store ah that you can store the
10:58
headphone holder in to hold the cord whenever you're not using it I actually
11:02
quite like this one and finally our last
11:06
entry this one's called Model circular a
11:09
and I really really like this one I knew
11:13
coming into this this was going to be the one to beat this is by Henning Weber
11:18
Weber well either way basically the way
11:22
this puppy works is it's big and I can see that being a turnoff for some people
11:27
but it brings with it a lot of functionality so there's a slot right
11:31
here to run your cords through so you go
11:34
ahead and just kind of throw your cords into the into the cable organizer pouch
11:40
there then you can put up to two pairs of headphones on it personally I'm not a
11:45
huge fan of the way the second pair of headphones goes on at the back but it's
11:49
nice to at least have the space for it since it is kind of a bulkier design and
11:54
then you go ahead and you put your second pair of headphones on the front
11:59
what I like about how large the the little cubby here for cables is is that
12:05
you can also Jam some accessories in there like 2 and 1/2 mil to 3 and 1/2 mm
12:10
Jack adapters for example so I'm going to go ahead and pop this in here and we
12:15
will declare the winner well I think we might as well I
12:20
think we might as well declare the winner now I'm really liking this one so
12:24
assuming that Silverstone can find a way to manufacture it then I'm going to go
12:29
with the circular a design right here
12:32
and then I think I'm actually going to make my runner up in the event that this
12:37
cannot be made this puppy right here so
12:40
thank you to everyone who participated remember everyone whose design was shown
12:45
off here today does get a finished copy
12:49
of the winning design and the winner not only gets black and silver but also a
12:56
gold anodized version of their winning design design and I think that's pretty
13:00
much it guys and on that subject crunchy
