0:00 when i first laid eyes on the 2018 mac mini the first words out of my mouth
0:04 were does apple make it bigger and i actually wasn't the only one
0:09 so i got myself all pumped up to be like yo so it's not so many anymore is it you
0:15 know what we should just call it the mac
0:18 but but as it turns out they actually didn't make it bigger it's just been so
0:23 long since apple has updated the mac mini that either you think of this
0:29 or this or this
0:32 which is the original mac mini not this
0:36 i guess we've just been spoiled by the Intel nook and all the third-party
0:40 derivatives but so you know what i'm actually gonna stick with it this
0:45 product shouldn't be called the mac mini
0:48 it should be called the mac but
0:52 that might not be a bad thing
0:55 speaking of mac our sponsor mac weldon
0:58 mac weldon makes great underwear t-shirts socks wallets and more they
1:02 believe in simple shopping and if you use code tech tips you will get 20 off
1:07 at the link below
1:17 so we stumbled upon the first reason that this is a mac
1:20 not a mac mini during the ordering process
1:24 unlike previous mac mini models the 2018
1:27 mac is not cheap it starts at 7.99 for
1:31 the quad core experience with a piddly 8 gigs of RAM and 128 gigs of storage
1:37 now obviously i'm no pleb so i poked around on the ordering page some more
1:42 and ended up ponying up for the second reason that this is a mac the desktop
1:48 class 6 core processor option
1:51 yes my friends starting at 1099 us you
1:54 can get the same performance as your diy pc building chump roommate in a device
2:01 this big the unboxing experience certainly was
2:04 pretty legendary but things were looking up from there and isn't it beautiful the
2:09 thing weighs only about three pounds and is completely clean aside from the
2:15 glossy apple logo on the top oh well
2:19 around back we've got this air vent that apple says doubles air flow over the
2:23 last gen and above the io which impressively is nearly identical to the
2:29 imac pro and includes four Thunderbolt 3
2:32 ports which have all kinds of uses display usb external docks whatever
2:38 we've got HDMI usb a and a headphone
2:42 jack hey is that where they've been keeping them
2:46 anyway what we've also got is the main event for me right here a 10 gigabit
2:53 networking port and this is not only available on the mac but even reasonably
2:58 priced at about 100 bucks for the upgrade so now we can finally edit ak
3:04 footage over the network without needing an imac pro or an expensive Thunderbolt
3:10 to 10 gigabit networking adapter so why don't we do it
3:21 ah macOS my old friend
3:25 macos not my favorite in no small part though due to my lack of familiarity
3:30 with it but to its credit it's actually remarkably smooth on this machine with
3:35 its mere eight gigs of RAM with that said the experience isn't all it could
3:40 be with a more reasonable amount of system memory and i've got some good
3:45 news with about half an hour and a handy dandy guide off of ifixit anyone with a
3:51 screwdriver should be able to perform a memory upgrade on the 2018 mac remember
3:56 that's what i'm calling it by themselves
3:59 so i called in a friend to help me out he knows all about disassembling apple
4:04 products it's actually easier than you might think to get inside this thing you just
4:09 need the right tools here are the steps the bottom lid just pops right off the
4:14 antenna plate is just a few screws make sure though that you mark where the
4:18 larger ones go for reassembly later you unscrew the wi-fi connector and
4:22 carefully pry it up then unscrew the fan pry its connector
4:26 up and remove it these two cables need to be carefully removed
4:31 then you can take out the two large tr-10 screws that keep the motherboard
4:35 fastened to the chassis give the rear i o plate a gentle push and it'll pop up
4:40 and then out there's a cage around the RAM to reduce emi but four t6 screws
4:45 later and we have regular old sodium
4:48 slots just repeat this process in reverse once the RAM is in and you're
4:52 done but i have some bad news too remember
4:56 how i mentioned that you should buy as much storage as you will need when you order
5:00 yeah about that so the uh let's call them rumors about
5:04 apple blocking third-party operating systems from the mac mini and other t2
5:08 chip enabled devices turns out to be false but only from a
5:14 literal standpoint thanks to the t2 chip Linux isn't
5:18 blocked from booting only from installing
5:21 so if you fire it up into recovery mode and disable secure boot
5:26 you can still boot Linux if you're into that even with the t2 chip but without
5:32 access to the internal storage so we're booted back up here let's go
5:36 into about this map boom there it is 32 gigs of ddr4 memory so at least the
5:43 RAM upgrade worked and this was just with random memory
5:48 that we had lying around in our warehouse so all that's left now then is to see
5:53 how the 2018 mac stacks up with the competition in terms of its performance
5:58 we're going to test it alongside the macbook pro 2018 the macbook air 2018 a
6:04 hades canyon nook and a similarly priced
6:07 desktop pc also while we aren't focusing on games
6:11 today we're going to throw a few in there just to round out our testing as
6:14 one might expect well relying on integrated graphics does the mac no
6:18 favors even at 720p medium details it
6:21 absolutely chugs in shadow of the tomb raider meaning that you're basically sol
6:26 for all but esports titles and even then
6:29 it's not a great experience until you plug in an external GPU via
6:34 Thunderbolt 3. just bear in mind though that only AMD graphics cards are
6:39 officially supported in macOS
6:43 anyway that's not why you're buying a mac and when it comes to productivity
6:47 thankfully the mac here occupies a niche much closer to the 2018 macbook pro than
6:53 the 2018 macbook air thanks to its hefty
6:56 CPU horsepower but while it does beat out our hades
7:00 canyon nook in CPU performance it sadly doesn't come close in GPU and loses out
7:07 entirely to our similarly priced stock
7:10 desktop except actually for one case where macOS's aggressive boost factors
7:16 in though this lack of performance compared to a
7:20 full-size desktop would be a much bigger problem in our eyes if it wasn't for the
7:25 max diminutive form factor speaking of which by the way it does
7:29 have a reasonable looking ventilation hole but it got really hot like
7:34 really hot while it was working hard like over 90 degrees hot
7:39 which comes a little too close to literally smoking the competition for
7:43 our liking i mean stock chips start to throttle around 85 degrees or so and
7:49 yeah the mac manages to keep it going above base clock with surprisingly
7:55 minimal noise so that's good but remember it's got that t2 chip that
7:59 we're all familiar with by now so if some component of your system dies a
8:04 heat death or the board flexes or something especially as dust accumulates
8:09 inside over the years remember apple might not upgrade this thing for four
8:12 years so even if you buy on every release cycle
8:17 at least the good news is that it sips power compared to our desktop i'm just
8:21 saying i would recommend setting up time machine just to be safe
8:24 which honestly is a pretty good way to sum up the whole experience one giant
8:29 asterisk yeah it's a small mac
8:32 but you're going to have to deal with no dedicated GPU when similarly priced kits
8:37 have them yes it's fast but it's thermal
8:40 solution while improved is not designed for sustained loads yes it's upgradable
8:45 and cleanable but only if you have the right tools and that upgradeable thing
8:50 it only applies to RAM not the internal storage that is held
8:55 ransom by the t2 chip like it really seems like apple designed this new
8:59 generation of mac with something like final cut or adobe premiere in mind
9:03 where the igp can accelerate some of the transcoding work and then the CPU cores
9:08 themselves can handle the much burstier timeline editing work that's even more
9:13 apparent with the inclusion of 10 gig Ethernet for connecting to a high speed
9:17 nas though we're not saying that's the only thing it could be used for because on
9:21 that subject you could actually use this thing as a high speed nas thanks to that
9:26 10 gig Ethernet though for the price and considering
9:30 that you'd need a separate Thunderbolt enclosure for true mass storage well
9:35 it's not a great value in spite of the compromises though
9:40 per apple tradition there's nothing in this form factor that quite matches the
9:45 capability and the connectivity of the
9:48 2018 mac and the price while
9:52 higher isn't entirely outlandish either
9:55 so if you need its unique blend of form and function
9:59 or if you just plain need a mac and don't feel like paying more to have a
10:02 screen pre-attached to it seriously actually this occurred to us only while
10:06 we were finalizing the script for this video this is the only thing that runs macOS
10:12 and doesn't include a screen that has been refreshed by apple in the last five
10:17 years anyway it's a pretty neat little machine
10:21 just make sure you keep regular backups of all of your files
10:25 though i mean that's pretty good advice across the board
10:29 speaking of good advice our sponsor squarespace if you need to create a
10:35 gorgeous website without the hassle some advice would be to try them out their
