0:00 there aren't actually too many more things more difficult than trying to see
0:03 your surroundings in a pitch black room and while you can always feel your way
0:08 around and hope that you don't trip head first into the toilet there are times
0:13 that actually being able to see in the dark is a must fortunately night vision
0:18 isn't just a thing in your favorite first-person shooter it's present in
0:22 everything from surveillance cameras to military periscopes to ordinary
0:27 smartphones in fact part of the reason night vision has so many applications is
0:32 because it's not just one specific piece of technology rather it comes in several
0:38 different forms that can be deployed depending on use case but what many
0:42 people think of when they hear the words night vision is something called image
0:47 intensification or image enhancement
0:50 this is that stereotypical green form of
0:54 night vision that you might associate with the military or what you see in
0:59 action movies speaking of which that green color is used on purpose because
1:04 your eyes are more sensitive to Green than other colors image enhancement
1:08 works by being able to detect low levels of light and then amplify it when
1:14 photons the tiny particles that make up light enter an image enhancer they first
1:19 hit a special layer called a photocathode which releases electrons
1:24 these electrons then hit a second layer called a microchannel plate which mult
1:29 mullies the electrons before they hit the phosphor screen why are these things
1:33 all so epic that then converts them back into light because there are now so many
1:38 more electrons you get a Brighter Image so you'll have an easier time getting
1:43 into someone's base and killing all their dudes but hold on a second what if
1:47 there isn't enough light for thermal enhancers to see at all this is where
1:52 thermal imaging comes in instead of detecting light thermal cameras detect
1:57 heat coming off of different objects since they can see infrared light you
2:02 see heat causes things to emit photons in the infrared or IR spectrum and
2:07 although humans can't see infrared light these special cameras take advantage of
2:12 it in a number of different ways IR cameras produce images called
2:16 thermograms which sometimes look rainbow colored where the different colors
2:20 represent different temperatures thermograms are useful for everything
2:25 seemingly from medicine to construction but they're very specific specifically
2:30 handy for night vision since it's really easy to pick out different objects such
2:35 as people or animals due to their different colors standing out on the
2:39 screen thermal cameras often can't achieve the same level of detail as
2:43 their image enhancing counterparts but they have a big advantage of being able
2:47 to pick out things that might be hard to see with a normal image enhancer for
2:52 example a firefighter trying to locate people that need to be rescued in a
2:57 burning building a hunter picking out prey deep in the woods hiding behind
3:01 foliage or cops trying to locate that hiding fugitive and speaking of thermal
3:07 imaging some cameras can even create their own infrared light in a process
3:11 called active illumination where they actually light up their surroundings
3:16 with ir radiation because this additional infrared energy reflects off
3:21 of whatever the camera is pointed at this strategy can result in much higher
3:26 resolution images great for things like surveillance camera where you really
3:31 want to get a positive ID on that per that tried to steal your slushy
3:35 machine what a downer audible.com is the
3:39 leading provider of audiobooks with more than 180,000 downloadable titles across all

4:07 180,000 audio programs there might be some audio book about stealing a
4:13 portable slushie machine but I've been listening to Game of Thrones it's
4:17 absolutely fantastic no spoilers the current movies are or the current show
4:22 is kind of running right now so there's a lot of spoilers online too so just a heads up to avoid those but yeah if
4:27 you're like old enough I I i' listen to I'd listen to Game of Thrones Audi book
4:32 speaking of things I'd do like the video
4:35 or you know dislike the video if you want to like be the other side in a Game
4:40 of Thrones War you know uh that analogy
