0:00 now Nintendo recently filed a patent for Game Boy emulation which would allow
0:04 folks to have the Game Boy experience on devices that range from their mobile
0:08 phones all the way to the displays on the backs of the seats in front of them
0:11 on trains and airplanes cool right wait hold on a minute lus what exactly is
0:16 emulation are they going to cut open all those seats and stuff game boys inside
0:21 where will they get so many game boys are they going to try to take mine no
0:25 whoa hold on slow down there turbo they don't need actual game Boys in fact
0:29 that's exactly the point of an emulator to use software combined with high-speed
0:35 or specialized Hardware to effectively fake the functionality of another piece
0:40 of hardware for the purpose of running or debugging programs so that Game Boy
0:45 emulator is just a software program that runs on Hardware that is nothing like an
0:50 actual game boy but is able to imitate its functionality so the game software
0:55 itself never knows it's not running on a real Game Boy neat hey yeah Linus that
1:00 sounds super awesome so can I emulate the Titan supercomputer on like my phone
1:06 and run complex weather simulations in my
1:10 pocket no uh even with intimate knowledge of how a device and the
1:14 software it runs works the non-specialized processing power
1:18 required to fake a given functionality purely in software especially one for
1:23 which highly specialized purpose-built Hardware has been developed is often an
1:27 order of magnitude greater than the original or more and in many cases
1:32 especially where emulation is being used to preserve the gaming experiences of
1:37 old games or software that wouldn't otherwise run on Modern computers a fair
1:41 bit of brute forcing it is required to achieve sufficient
1:46 performance okay lonus sweet then so I can run like Odell Lake on my Alienware
1:51 riveting I'm glad you made a video about this actually emulation is not just for
1:55 old stuff it's often used in the design of future products as well one of my
2:00 favorite examples of this is the recurring Scandal of oh my goodness the
2:04 game console maker X was using a PC to run their demos at video game convention
2:09 y well of course they were it's called a
2:13 development kit imagine a world where a new game console came out and then you
2:17 had to wait the typical 2 to three years that a AAA game takes before you could
2:22 actually play anything on it programmers use devkits often developed internally
2:27 to write code for systems that aren't actually finished being designed yet so
2:32 that once the hardware is finalized there's already software for it and
2:36 programmable Hardware like a modern video game console is just one example
2:40 of this it can be even more useful in the design of specialized Hardware
2:44 called an embedded system where the hardware and software need to work
2:48 tightly together to reduce power consumption and design complexity
2:52 keeping costs low emulation of the hardware allows faster testing of
2:57 software which allows faster refinement of the hardware multiple cycles of which
3:01 can occur without ever actually physically manufacturing anything
3:05 efficient right so there you have it emulation has the advantages of
3:10 flexibility potentially improved functionality anti-aliasing add-ons for
3:14 PlayStation 1 games anyone and when done well lower Hardware costs but with the
3:20 drawbacks of sometimes imperfect compatibility and usually much higher
3:26 processing power requirements speaking of power requirements Cooler Master is
3:30 our sponsor for today they make cases fans all-in-one liquid coolers air
3:36 coolers peripherals like that Nova touch tkl that people keep asking about in the
3:41 videos over on my other channel L Tech tips and of course great quality power
3:45 supplies if you were interested in something like a holiday gift for the
3:49 geek in your life maybe give them a little prod hey dog you know is your CPU
3:53 running a little bit too hot you need new power supply for that new graphics
3:57 card that you asked your grandma for well you know maybe we could arrange for
4:00 you to you know get the whole bundle and have like a great Cooler Master PC um
4:07 yes I don't know Nick's notes in here are terrible Nick your notes on the the
4:12 video integration are terrible but the last couple things that are in there is
4:15 that the nepon 240m which is a cooler that we actually checked out recently on
4:19 the lus tech tips channel is a great value for someone looking for an
4:22 all-in-one liquid cooler for their CPU and if you're not necessarily looking to
4:26 buy something but you just enjoy learning I mean you're watching fast as possible so probably do then you can
4:30 check out their Cooler Master University site which will be linked in the video description where they've got some cool
4:35 information about cool things like coolers thanks for watching guys like
4:40 this video if you liked it dislike it if you disliked it leave a comment if you thought that my cool joke was not very
4:47 cool just awful or if you have suggestions for future fastest Possible
4:50 episodes just like this one
