0:00 motherboards these days can have so many expansion slots for adding new
0:03 functionality that most people don't even know what to do with them all at
0:08 least in theory because thanks to Modern
0:12 graphics cards ballooning thermal output almost none of them are available with
0:17 single slot coolers meaning that if you want to run a single graphics card you
0:21 take up two of your expansion slots you want to run two boom you just took up
0:25 four of your expansion slots now the solution to this used to be very simple
0:30 you take your graphics card you rip that cooler off of it and then you go ahead and you put a water block on it so that
0:35 you can actually install something in the slot right next to it without
0:38 compromising the cooling well not if NVIDIA or AMD have anything to say about
0:44 that check this out here's a couple of modern cards you see the problem they
0:49 have connectors in the next slot over so we're going to show you guys how to take
0:53 care of that and uh single slot ay a modern
0:58 GPU
1:06 tunnel bear is the easy to use VPN service that lets you browse the web as
1:09 if you're in one of 20 different countries check out the link in the
1:13 video description to learn more so I'm actually going to start with a A
1:17 pre-water cooled card the purpose of this video is not to be a comprehensive
1:22 guide on how to water cool your graphics card because we've actually done that
1:25 before you can check out that video right around here no this one is just
1:31 intended to address the difficulties
1:34 associated with water cooling a card that has IO that's in the slot next to
1:39 it you know whether you're trying to just increase the number of slots that
1:42 you have access to or whether say for example there's a particular type of
1:48 slot that's being covered that you need well this should help you and then again
1:53 last thing to be clear I'm not necessarily recommending that you do
1:56 this because while we will be taking what I believe will be the appropriate
2:00 precautions to ensure that our card still works at the end of this your
2:04 mileage may vary considerably and this is not the kind of guide that you will
2:08 find anywhere on you know I don't know AMD or NVIDIA's
2:14 website so the first step is to find yourself the appropriate cutting wheel
2:19 so we're just going to be using one of the standard cutting discs and not or
2:25 reinforced cutting discs rather and not the uh nubbing of a one that was on
2:29 there four step number two is to remove
2:33 the rear IO plate from the card this
2:36 will subject the card itself to less
2:40 metal shortage uh all over the place than if I
2:44 were to try and cut this while it was attached there we
2:49 go but before doing that we are going to
2:52 mask off any exposed PCB parts of the
2:57 card as well as we possibly can can to
3:01 avoid any metal splinters or shards um
3:05 causing shorts on the board by just getting lodged into places and bridging
3:11 contacts so I have this handy dandy bag that's exactly the size of a video card
3:15 that I'm going to try and use for that with a water block on it a video card is
3:19 no longer exactly the size of a video card that's okay we'll just take it
3:27 together mask off the
3:31 Bo okay so the last thing to consider before the point of no return which we
3:35 are about to Embark upon is whether or not you need this connector so this is a
3:41 DVI D whereas this is a dvii so that
3:44 actually leaves us with DVI VGA though not at the same time although I think
3:48 there are split I'm not actually sure don't quote me on that one DVI or VGA
3:52 HDMI and DisplayPort on this particular card so as long as we don't need dual
3:55 DVI then we should be pretty much good to go now in theory this should work
4:01 because a disconnected connection is still a disconnected connection whether
4:04 it's here at the connector or whether it's here at the well we sought it off
4:09 there so um I guess without any further stalling
4:14 it's dremeling time let's get our vacuum
4:17 cleaner in position you know it's called a vacuum
4:21 cleaner but you would never use it to clean a vacuum I mean by this logic a
4:26 car wash should use a car to wash something be up to the editor whether
4:30 that gets left in or
4:42 not wow that's
4:46 uh that's a little uh that's yeah that's steel that's a little tougher than I was
4:51 hoping I think we're going to bring out the big guns
4:56 here a crap
5:00 I cut my damn
5:05 vacuum now I didn't cut it much I only cut it a
5:13 little cool oh
5:20 wow so there you have it our DV D
5:24 connector has been cleanly sheared off I
5:27 don't know exactly what difference this will make
5:31 but my sort of Common Sense would
5:34 dictate that you want to take these uh these connector wires here and separate
5:39 them so none of them are contacting each other what's left now is to do our PCI
5:45 back plate now with many cards in the past it was possible to buy these single
5:50 slot back plates that just had the io cutouts on the one side and and nothing
5:54 no ventilation slots on the other side but nowadays because there's IO here no
5:59 one really sells those anymore so we're just going to have to uh we're just
6:03 going to have to make do and just kind of eyeball it here it's really not as
6:08 tight as I'd normally like something like this to be
6:21 held okay in theory a single
6:25 slot bracket I need a file though the are
6:29 really
6:34 sharp ow okay so now all that's left then is
6:40 to reassemble our GTX Titan oh you can see
6:45 it is a really good thing that we masked
6:49 off our video card there you can see those metal shards that were're flying
6:54 around also we're going to be careful now then to keep this video card
6:58 oriented this this way so that those don't fall out towards the car so we're
7:04 going to use a little technique that I call alcohol bath washes away our
7:10 problems all right so now we can put our freshly modded back plate on there ah
7:16 there we go a
7:19 yes oh no I dropped all the
7:28 screws there you go look at that it almost looks natural if you ignore
7:34 this the last thing left now is to make
7:38 sure that our card still
7:41 works boom let's go get some
7:49 water okay Moment of Truth time let's find out if the sucker Works post code
7:54 55 what does that mean oh I don't have time for this right
7:58 now these fans are not plugged in okay let's try
8:04 it again postcode 55 what are you so it
8:08 seems like it may be RAM related so I'm
8:11 going to go ahead and pop one of these sticks out come on video card yeah woo I
8:18 mean there's no real reason this shouldn't have worked I shouldn't be that excited but there you go it works I
8:22 mean oh I guess what I haven't shown yet is installing a card next to it let's
8:28 say we wanted a PCI press SSD oh what the heck it's PCI
8:33 e2x okay I need a 1x card where am I going to get a 1x card okay so let's say
8:39 you needed a TV tuner look I don't have to have a good
8:43 reason for doing these things sometimes it's just because I
8:47 can boom TV tuner installed let's get it
8:52 uh booted up into an operating system now
8:56 cool well I'm kind of stoked on this if
8:59 no one else cares I mean what's the point of these fancy motherboards with
9:02 all these slots if you can only use half of them right so I think that pretty
9:06 much wraps it up then guys thank you for watching if you disliked this video then
9:10 hit that dislike button post it on r/ teex support Gore do whatever it else
9:15 slash cringe wherever it is that you want to talk about what an idiot I am
9:19 but the reality of it of it is that it
9:22 worked so there's that if you guys liked it hit that like button get subscribed
9:26 to lus Tech tips the little check mark and maybe even consider supporting us
9:30 whether it's by changing your Amazon bookmark to one with our affiliate code instructions for which are up there by
9:34 buying a cool shirt like this one or by joining our community forum and
9:38 contributing some answers or becoming a contributor on the Forum or whatever
9:42 else the case may be thanks again for watching and if you guys are done doing
9:46 all that stuff and you're kind of wondering hm gee what should I watch next maybe check out the video where
9:51 I must have done something interesting
9:55 recently well I'm sure they'll overlay something interesting here and put some
9:58 text and make it look very enticing for you to click on that'll also be up
10:05 there
