0:00 back in the day if you really wanted to try a cigarette or a beer but were a few
0:05 months or even years south of proper it
0:08 often wasn't all that hard to get your friend's cool older brother to make you
0:13 a fake driver's license that looked close enough to the real thing to fool a
0:18 clerk and allow you to walk out of the store Contraband in hand in modern times
0:24 though governments and other organizations have used technology to
0:28 finally start to seriously combat the
0:32 ancient practices of forgery and
0:35 counterfeiting not just to make sure you're really of legal age but to
0:40 prevent serious crimes like human trafficking and keep your money safe so
0:45 what are some of the things that make documents like passports driver's
0:49 licenses credit cards and cash so hard
0:53 to forge these days let's start with
0:56 something that's usually pretty easy to see the hologram because a hologram is
1:02 really a precise record of how light
1:06 defract off of an object at different angles it's harder to produce than a
1:11 regular photograph you need lasers lenses and special film making these a
1:17 popular security feature on ID cards credit cards and passports but of course
1:23 Holograms can still be copied given the
1:26 right tools so these days you might also
1:29 see very fine engraving in the Hologram
1:33 if you look closely enough which is even more difficult to copy if you don't have
1:38 the same equipment that was originally used to make it but what about the stuff
1:43 then that's a little less obvious and no I'm not talking about the ignorant and
1:48 culturally offensive rumor that Canada made its $100 bills smell like maple
1:55 syrup no wait a minute but rather the
2:01 special inks that are used for printing money or other documents often times
2:07 governments can defeat people that try to modify passports illegally by
2:12 printing them with thermally sensitive ink when the forger tries to tamper with
2:17 the passport a process that often requires heat the ink will change color
2:22 letting officials know that passport is no longer kosher there are also inks
2:27 that can be printed in 2 and A2 diens ions so you can actually feel a bump
2:32 with your finger ones that shift color depending on the viewing angle this is a
2:37 pretty neat feature of the latest US currency and even ones that shine under
2:41 a black light you can learn more about that in this video here but there's more
2:47 to it than just technology and owning the right equipment Sometimes the best
2:52 defense can be simply attention to detail have you ever bought a Louis
2:57 Vuitton purse that has the LV logo cut off by a seam or an iPhone with typos on
3:04 the packaging well the agencies that print money and IDs can even outsmart
3:10 counterfitters through similar means here's an example certain fonts that
3:15 they might use look simple or unremarkable at first glance but might
3:21 have subtleties that make them very hard to reproduce exactly and many times they
3:27 aren't fonts that you can get from Google search but proprietary type faces
3:33 only used by a certain country's government some of which contain
3:37 intentional imperfections to throw counterfeits off the more you know of
3:44 course many of us are using bank or credit cards a heck of a lot more than
3:48 cash these days so stay tuned for a follow-up episode on those new fangled
3:54 chip cards and how and why they are
3:57 harder to copy than those mag Stripes that we're all used to swiping or if by
4:02 this point in the video your tin foil hat sense is tingling let me know in the
