0:00 choosing a new hard drive for your computer used to be a pretty large
0:03 production between fiddling with jumpers Master Slave cable select blah dealing
0:09 with weird settings and finding somewhere to put those ugly ribbon
0:14 cables it wasn't exactly straightforward for the average user nowadays though the
0:20 SATA interface has made things simple almost to the point of making expanding
0:24 your storage a plug-and playay experience you pick a capacity and speed
0:29 you connect the cables and Bam more space for your steam library or your
0:34 private videos but while you were combing through all those pages of hard
0:38 drives and ssds you might have noticed an option to look at something called a
0:43 SAS Drive instead of s and being the
0:46 Intrepid Shopper that you are you clicked on it wondering if this strange
0:50 exotic interface could give you faster load times in Battlefront or whatever
0:55 then you quickly retreated After experiencing the sticker stock so what
1:01 is this sass anyway and why the heck is it so much more expensive than SATA and
1:06 could it be worth it for your personal computer all right so let's go back to
1:11 the beginning SAS stands for serial attached scuzzy which might sound
1:16 familiar to you as there's an older version called parallel scuzzy and that
1:20 was a popular choice for things like CD ROM drives way back in the day modern
1:26 SAS connectors however can be difficult to find on consumer motherboards even
1:31 though they look extremely similar to SATA in fact SATA drives will work on a
1:37 SAS controller so then what is the difference exactly well SAS can perform
1:42 significantly faster than SATA for a number of reasons one of which is the
1:48 bus or the or the communication method itself the latest revision of SAS
1:53 revision three if you're keeping score at home supports up to 12 gabit per
1:57 second transfer speeds that's twice as fast as SATA 3 with speeds of over 22 GB
2:04 per second expected in the year 2017 SAS
2:08 also has the advantage of being full duplex meaning that a SAS Drive can send
2:13 and receive data at the full speed at
2:16 the same time SATA drives on the other hand can only deal with full- speed data
2:21 in one direction at a time and if you're interested in a more traditional
2:25 mechanical hard drive instead of an SSD SAS drives often feature much faster
2:31 rotational speeds to improve performance it's actually pretty easy to find 15,000
2:37 RPM SAS drives which is over twice as
2:40 fast as your typical CA hard disk would spin but then if SAS is so great then
2:46 why don't people who build you know even very high-end home PCS use it much well
2:52 it's actually targeted more at the server market for companies that need
2:56 very reliable storage that many many
2:59 people are accessing at once so it's got
3:02 more durable construction higher throughput and support for a large
3:07 number of drives on One controller making SAS a popular choice for high
3:12 capacity servers that need to be online 247 such as for larger businesses or
3:18 company websites or whatever else unfortunately as I've mentioned before
3:22 these additional capabilities mean that soft drives are typically much more
3:26 expensive per Gigabyte than SATA but I mean let's say you could get your hands
3:30 on a SAS capable motherboard like we did recently in this video would the extra
3:35 performance then be worth it well actually the answer is unless you're
3:40 doing some really weird stuff with your personal gaming rig probably not the SAS
3:46 protocol is optimized like I said for when many users are connected to the
3:50 machine accessing data at once meaning you probably wouldn't see much real
3:55 world benefit if any at all but I guess
3:58 it could be an interesting choice for like a home database server something
4:05 like that which probably probably you aren't doing speaking of things you
4:09 probably aren't doing if you aren't using Squarespace there's a good chance you aren't building yourself a simple
4:14 powerful beautiful website they've got 247 tech support via live chat and email
4:18 and you can get yourself set up with a Squarespace site with all the tools for
4:22 managing and hosting it in the cloud for only $8 a month and you get a free
4:27 domain if you buy Squarespace for the year all all of their gorgeous templates
4:31 feature responsive design so your website scales to look great on any
4:34 device whether it's a desktop laptop phone or watch actually I I I don't
4:40 think they have watch support yet but I'm sure once we have an internet
4:43 browser that's any good on a watch Squarespace is going to figure that stuff out they've got a ton of different
4:48 features that are included including every template coming with a store
4:51 feature and you can start a trial with no credit card required and start
4:54 building your website today all you got to do is check out the link in the video
4:58 description and if you decide to go ahead and keep your Squarespace site you
5:02 can use offer code Linus to get 10% off
5:05 your first purchase so thanks for watching guys if you liked this video
5:10 like it if you disliked it well dislike it I guess if you want to check out our
5:13 other channels we've got a pretty sick light saber battle thing going on over
