0:02 Dell's groundbreaking 8K monitor the last time
0:07 I checked out one of these was on a crowded show floor and to say that that
0:12 one was a little pre-production would be
0:16 an understatement but Dell has been hard at
0:20 work for 4 months on their apptly named
0:26 up3218k and the the finished product is now in
0:31 our hands for evaluation as a Content
0:35 creation device a Content consumption
0:38 device and last but not least we uh might fire
0:45 up some games on
0:55 it Synergy is the software that lets you
0:58 share your mouse and keyboard between multiple computers check it out now at
1:03 the link in the video description wait for
1:18 it I went too early here we go it's
1:22 alive 8K resolution at 60 HZ everything
1:28 about the ultra shark up 321 is either
1:32 state-of-the-art like the aluminum build quality hyper thin infinityedge TM bezel
1:38 and glass front or it makes state-ofthe-art
1:42 look like an antique the specs of this
1:45 thing are absolutely unreal it comes
1:48 tuned out of the box with an individual calibration report that promises Delta e
1:53 values of less than two and full
1:57 yes 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB color
2:03 space it's got 400 nit Peak brightness
2:06 which is Rock Solid for a non-HDR panel
2:09 although a little more on that later and a static contrast ratio of 1,300 to1
2:15 which is outstanding for an IPS panel type but that ignores the most obvious
2:21 calling card of this utterly unique
2:25 product the 8K resolution 10bit 60 HZ
2:31 panel I mean this is so far out ahead of
2:35 the curve that we don't even have a display interface that can handle it yet
2:40 like early 4K displays with DisplayPort
2:44 1.1 inputs it needs two connections to
2:48 the computer to run at its maximum 60 HZ
2:52 refresh rate but there's a big difference these are DisplayPort
2:58 1.4 four ports well hold on a minute lonus DP 1.2 can handle 4K 60 HZ no
3:05 problem and 1.4 has about double that
3:10 bandwidth why do we need two of those
3:15 ah because 8K is more than twice as many
3:20 pixels as 5K four times as many as 4K
3:24 and I'll whopping 16 times the pixel
3:28 count of 10 80P we are talking
3:32 33 megapixels 60 times per second and until
3:38 video card makers Implement DSC or
3:42 display stream compression the only way
3:45 to push this many pixels is going to be to add more chords I have some good news
3:51 too though Dell has a lot of experience
3:55 building high-end displays and it really
3:59 shows unlike early dual input 4K monitors
4:03 there's no flakiness where half of the display looks a little different from
4:09 the other half or where one side will refuse to turn on sometimes in fact you
4:13 can even just yank out one of the cables
4:17 and the only effect that you'll see is that the entire display will now be
4:21 running at 30 HZ instead of 60 and from
4:25 what I've seen plugging it back in is an equally seamless transition
4:30 and all of this experience carries over to the physical design as well in spite
4:34 of the panels weight heat and power consumption
4:39 characteristics they managed an internal power supply with passive Cooling and
4:45 all the Creature Comforts that creatives are used to height adjustment tilt
4:50 swivel and even pivot are all built into
4:55 a base that just exudes quality and they
4:59 include a vase amount for you as well
5:02 not only that but while you're typing or moving your mouse around there is next
5:06 to no screen wobble which is really hard to do with a panel this heavy the four
5:12 port built-in USB hub is pretty much a
5:15 bonus at this point though if I was to criticize something I wouldn't mind some
5:20 basic built-in speakers for emergencies
5:24 okay enough about all of that though let's talk about actually using it the
5:28 first thing I wanted to do was fire up an 8K wallpaper which believe it or not
5:32 in spite of all the advertised 8K wallpapers are pretty freaking hard to
5:36 find took me about 20 minutes that would
5:39 be a nice touch D including some like
5:43 dope AF highly detailed desktop
5:46 backgrounds cuz once I got that fired up it looked freaking amaz balls I mean
5:51 seriously face this close to the display
5:54 and you're basically is she naked on that
5:58 balcony no no no she's not but the crazy
6:02 thing is that I can tell in terms of
6:05 configuration The Sweet Spot for scaling seems to be in the sort of
6:11 250% range if you have pretty sharp eyes
6:15 and uh yeah I mean I guess it's really
6:19 easy to get going so let's have a look at some content
6:24 creation High DPI scaling still isn't perfect across the board on Windows 10
6:29 creators update but Adobe Premier Pro
6:32 scales perfectly looks absolutely razor
6:36 sharp and I have no complaints as far as
6:39 this particular Suite goes but this is
6:43 one time when being ahead of the curve
6:46 it has the potential to be a little bit
6:50 rough because uh unless you've also
6:53 dropped you know 7 plus ,000 on your uh
6:58 you know red rocket X accelerator card and a high-end GPU if you're working
7:03 with Native 8K content there is pretty
7:07 much no way that I can see that you're going to be able to play back this kind
7:12 of footage in real time anyway losing
7:15 some of the benefit if you're playing it back at a quarter or 1/8 resolution of
7:21 investing in an 8K display but of course
7:24 that's only true if you're talking about the footage before you've exported it so
7:28 let's go ahead and Export the footage and just watch it
7:34 back okay so now we're talking this cool as a
7:41 cucumber chunk of 8K footage of our DIY
7:45 desk PC project which was shot on the Red Epic W with the helium sensor that
7:51 burkel set to music looks fantastic on
7:56 this display the 8K viewing experience is unlike anything else in that you can
8:01 sit as close as you want to the Monitor
8:05 and you still can't perceive any drawback other than that maybe it
8:10 captured too many little details like specks of dust that you wouldn't have
8:15 necessarily wanted to show with that
8:19 said on the subject of drawbacks um all
8:23 of this is if you can find any 8K content we used our own for reasons
8:30 Beyond convenience there just isn't much
8:34 but how about 8K gaming I don't know
8:37 about you guys but for me one of the greatest things about PC gaming is that
8:42 getting a better video card and uh higher resolution new monitor is a great
8:48 way to breathe life into Old titles
8:52 giving them a visual Fidelity that not even the developer would have been able
8:57 to experience as at the time of creating
9:01 them unfortunately in this
9:04 case there were some drawbacks to go
9:07 along with the phenomenal image quality
9:12 I actually don't blame Dell for any of this the input leg and pixel response
9:17 times of their AK display are about as
9:21 good and feel about as good as you'd expect but even with top-of-the-line GTX
9:27 1080ti graphics cards in SLI with liquid
9:31 cooling to boot either the driver or the
9:36 game engine whoa that was fun seems to
9:40 just choke on something all the time and
9:46 crash as often as not and this is even true for relatively lightweight titles
9:51 like Team Fortress 2 so is there a
9:55 customer for this thing at 5,000
10:00 us well high-end users used to spend
10:04 that kind of money on larger displays
10:07 and higher resolution to increase their
10:11 working space for program layouts and
10:14 their canvas size for their projects
10:17 that is where legendary displays like dellz own 3007 wfp got their popularity
10:25 going from a 1280 by 1024 17in LCD which would have been
10:31 pretty typical at the time to one of those beasts was like moving from the
10:35 closet under the stairs on privet drive to Buckingham freaking Palace but
10:41 nowadays you can get something the same size as this with a usable resolution
10:47 for literally an order of magnitude less
10:52 money I mean obviously it costs more than that one for something with color
10:56 accuracy approaching this guy but we're still still paying a big premium for a
11:01 couple of things number one is sharpness
11:05 though to Dell's credit that is a sharpness that absolutely crushes even
11:11 outstanding displays like LG's ultra fine 5K on paper though in my honest
11:17 opinion in person the difference is not as noticeable as you might hope and
11:23 number two for being the first one on
11:27 the block with an eight K
11:30 display so then especially with that
11:34 last point in mind is there a customer
11:37 for this product well you bet there is
11:41 because when it comes to pcmr bragging
11:45 rights there is no limit as far as I can
11:48 tell and this is the
