0:00 I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone who's purchased an electronic
0:04 dudad of some sort has experienced performance degradation over time how's
0:10 that iPhone 4 running for you these days but what exactly causes your devices to
0:16 go from hero to zero over a span of just
0:19 a few
0:28 years cooler Master's master case maker 5 features their free form modular
0:33 system allowing you to customize adjust and upgrade make it yours at the link in
0:38 the video description so today's investigation was actually inspired by a
0:43 conversation thread that I saw over on Reddit about the Radeon rx480 graphics
0:48 card announcement video we did with Raja caduri from AMD where one of the
0:53 commenters suggested that AMD's practice
0:56 of loaning graphics cards to reviewers then asking them to send them along to
1:01 another reviewer could hurt their benchmark scores due to the cards
1:05 becoming worn out the back and forth discussion that followed is something
1:09 that I've seen a fair number of times in the context of whether or not it's safe
1:13 to buy used computer parts especially cards that have been used for
1:17 cryptocurrency mining but it's one that I've never seen actually tested now the
1:24 problem is that new hardware is impossible to go forward in time and
1:31 make old so no investigation into like a
1:35 GTX 1080s performance degradation over time can really be done and that old
1:40 Hardware is very very difficult to find
1:44 in still brand new condition that is to say unless you've got friends in low places
1:51 like evga's warehouse for example where
1:54 just such a thing was found by my bud Jacob over there this is a brand banking
2:00 new still sealed reference GTX 480 a
2:05 6-year-old graphics card and this is a
2:09 reference GTX 480 that was extensively used for benchmarking moved to my
2:14 personal rig then used for benchmarking some more with plenty of rough Linus
2:20 Tech tips handling in between so if there's any card that could have
2:23 degraded due to hard use mistreatment or heat this gtx480 is it so let's unbox
2:30 the new one and see if this one's
2:33 performance has
2:40 degraded wow this is not my most graceful unboxing ever it's all right
2:44 it's not really the point of the video man it's so crazy to see uh such an old
2:50 product new
2:58 packaging yeah there you have it brand new no hm
3:06 no I just ha taking that off brand new shiny and you could tell
3:12 if they had packaged up a used one and sent it to me because the thing about
3:15 480s is this surface stains when you touch it so you can tell this is
3:21 legitimately brand new and has been sitting in that box for somewhere
3:24 between 4 and 1 half to 6 years because
3:28 it is pristine so there it
3:31 is that's our
3:36 card so I'm back from all my testing and
3:39 uh let's run through the results here for my test bench to avoid any hardware
3:44 bottlenecks oh that's still running warm I'll be using a very different class of
3:48 Hardware than what was available in the GTX 480 era a core i7 5960x 8 Core
3:54 Extreme Edition 128 gigs of ddr4 RAM and
3:58 all of that running on an ASUS 99 Deluxe 2 motherboard and I'll be beginning this
4:03 then with a look at temperatures and raw
4:07 clock speeds compared to what is advertised if the card is actually
4:12 throttling down while under heavy load then a discrepancy here could save me a
4:17 lot of trouble running any other tests for this I used our Crisis 3 Skybox
4:22 thermal test which is both real world and one that puts the card under 100%
4:27 load spiking it up to almost 90° on the
4:31 GPU core even on an open air test bench
4:34 with a fan blowing down on it a reminder
4:37 to the Fanboys out there that life is regrettably not as simple as AMD cards
4:42 run hot or NVIDIA has better drivers it
4:46 varies significantly from product to
4:49 product anyway speaking of varying
4:52 significantly they didn't both cards behaved identically here after 10
4:57 minutes with our brand new card requiring 1% more fan speed for the same
5:02 701 MHz core clock and 90° operating
5:05 temperature let's move on to other tests then 3D Mark usually has some variation
5:11 from run to run but both of my 480s got
5:15 shot on just about equally with futur Mark comparing our rig here to a gaming
5:20 laptop from 2013 in spite of the Bey
5:25 CPU but let's run some real games then
5:28 Crisis 3 at High details and textures
5:31 shows us that the gtx480 is still a reasonably competent gaming card whether
5:36 it's brand new or very old and I guess
5:40 this test is also a testament to the repeatability of our Crisis 3 Benchmark
5:44 run because they came in pretty damn near the same the canned benchmarks in
5:50 Batman Arkham Origins and Grand Theft Auto 5 tell a similar story leading us
5:56 finally anticlimactically to the conclusion
6:00 other than their cooling fans which will whine or stop outright when they fail
6:06 video cards like most computer hardware
6:09 have no moving parts and therefore do not generally suffer from gradually
6:15 declining performance from use over an extended period of time in the same way
6:20 that let's say a stick of chewing gum would which does not mean that they
6:26 don't wear out electron migration the moment mum of electrons eventually
6:31 causing atoms to move can cause circuits
6:34 to fail and this is made worse by heat
6:38 or by overclocking it's just that the way that
6:42 they fail is not generally gradual or
6:46 predictable it's more like the way that the roof of your house would fail it
6:51 totally works until such time as it
6:54 doesn't totally work and you get water on your head and it's time for a new one
6:59 so if your iPhone or your laptop like a
7:02 video card doesn't have any moving parts then based on our testing today the
7:07 reason for its slowdown that is to say if its storage device is still running
7:11 well is more likely to do with software
7:15 with bloated applications like anti- malware packages or malware itself pick
7:21 your poison right running in the background and operating system updates
7:25 that are designed with more overhead for
7:29 newer faster Hardware being the most common
7:33 culprits so as you can imagine for a technology YouTube channel we use
7:39 technology here in our office to improve efficiency a lot from the inventory
7:44 system that we added when we moved into the new office so we don't have to just
7:47 be like uh oh hey does anyone have the
7:51 47.9k to the much improved tracking
7:55 system for all of our videos ads vessel
7:58 releases YouTube releases Etc that has replaced the old whiteboard and
8:04 handwritten notes so just as we are improving efficiency in our office using
8:09 technology HP is using new printer technology to help improve your office
8:13 experience so they're featuring the pagewide pro mfp
8:18 477dw which has best-in-class printing speeds prints four times more pages than
8:23 standard cartridges with their pagewide extra high yield cartridges and allows
8:28 you to save on printer on electricity cost and on time because the best
8:35 possible printer in my mind is the one
8:38 that sits in a corner and is completely invisible except when you need it to
8:43 work and just freaking works because you
8:46 don't have time to Tinker around with something like this when you need oh I
8:50 don't know Talent release forms for a shoot that you're running out the door
8:54 to do or whatever the case may be so if
8:58 you want to learn more check it out at the link in the video
9:03 description so thanks for watching guys if this video sucked you know where that
