0:00 so today I'll be having a look at the WD mybook Elite this is an external hard
0:05 drive it is premium backup and storage and it is the number one world's
0:09 bestselling external hard drives that is wd's claim to fame on this particular
0:14 line well no I guess that's overall it has a three-year limited warranty it has
0:18 an LCD screen on the front it is secure
0:23 and I have no idea what that's supposed to mean it's a brain with gears in it
0:28 but I guess we'll get to that when we get to it so it's a 1 terab drive that I
0:32 have today it's up to 120 hours of HD or
0:35 25,000 no 250,000 MP3s or 200,000 jpegs
0:40 okay I'm guessing that's just kind of averaged uh visual backup okay so this
0:45 is their their LCD screen which can show
0:48 it has a power and activity light it has a drive lock indicator so it locks and
0:53 it has a capacity gauge so that's kind of cool you don't have to monitor it you
0:56 can just monitor it at a glance okay so
0:59 visual backup 250 system files music movies photos documents visual backup
1:04 displays your content categories and confirms that your files have been
1:07 backed up okay that's kind of neat Mouse over a category for an
1:12 information window with file details I actually know nothing about this I'm
1:16 just sort of unboxing it on the spot here so their smartware software is a
1:20 visual control center it gives you automatic continuous backup it has
1:23 password protection with 256bit Hardware encryption that's pretty
1:28 cool you have a smart display custom label you can see your label available
1:32 capacity and security status even when the drive is unplugged that's kind of a
1:35 neat feature okay let's go around to the other side and this shows the drive
1:40 itself so why don't we just take it out and show you the drive itself because
1:44 this is meant to be unboxed and that's a
1:48 lot ow oh that hurt okay I'm good I'm
1:53 okay I'm all right
1:57 oh hit my wrist on the table it's like
2:01 going to bruise okay uh now I'm going to try and
2:05 figure out how the Box opens there's a little tab oh there are stickers let cut
2:10 the stickers okay little
2:15 tab okay I got to cut the stickers the other way yes cut the stickers in every
2:21 direction possible there we go okay so there it is there's the my book Elite
2:26 and then over here is our accessories so why don't we start with the accessories
2:30 let's see what we got inside here I'm going to guess there's a power
2:36 cord yes success okay so here is an
2:40 Asian power devices um 100 100 to 240 volt 50 to 60
2:46 her 0.5 amp 12vt power
2:49 adapter cool and this is oh power supply
2:54 it's even conveniently labeled look at that all right next we have um what else
3:00 we have a USB data cable which is also labeled USB 2.0 oh this is this is kind
3:05 of funny I haven't seen too many um 3
3:08 and 1/2 in external hard drives that use the little mini connector most of them
3:11 seem to use the larger one but there you go and then we have a little pamphlet
3:16 brochure thing that says Asian power
3:20 devices ink and gives you some safety instructions for the included uh AC todc
3:25 power adapter clean only with a dry cloth heat all warnings follow all inst
3:29 instuctions do both of those things keep these These are okay this is great check
3:34 this out okay one read these instructions two keep these instructions
3:38 three heed all warnings four follow all instructions and then they give you the
3:42 instructions so there's actually four instructions out of 19 about reading and
3:46 keeping and following and heaing all of the instructions that's excellent um
3:51 next we have an important note to Windows users make sure that you follow
3:54 all these instructions also if it does not launch automatically open my
3:57 computer oh it shows you how to uh how to access the drive my book Elite this
4:03 is a quick start guide so step one two three one you plug in the power two you
4:08 plug in the data and three you um use
4:13 your computer to use the smartware software
4:17 okay and there's nothing on the back oh they hey they have a text support in
4:21 case you have trouble with those three instructions you can call text support in Spanish English Japanese whole
4:27 bunch of other languages have one phone number in Middle East in Africa okay
4:32 technical support and warranty gu wow this is thick technical support and
4:36 warranty guide look at this thing you could like hang this on your
4:40 wall I'm guessing it's because there are
4:43 tin billion different languages and that seems to be the case so here's
4:48 English and then here's some more English and I think that's all the
4:53 English so there must be actually that many languages on
4:57 here cool well it looks like some of the languages get diagrams and other ones
5:01 don't like if anyone here someone should leave a comment and tell me what this
5:05 says cuz that diagram isn't on there in English and I'd like to know what it
5:09 says this one too actually what does that oh oh that's uh Ros so it's lead
5:15 and Mercury cadmium all that kind of good stuff okay so without further Ado
5:20 why don't we have a look at the actual my book Elite
5:26 unit okay so this is the unbagging port
5:29 of my unboxing oh wow these plastic things
5:34 that they use are very strong or I'm very weak one of the
5:38 two all right so it doesn't it weighs about as much as a typical 3 and 1/2 in
5:42 Drive which is about what you'd expect um here's the bottom so it has two
5:47 little rubberized uh foamy grippy feet
5:50 so if you put it down it won't really slide too much that's pretty good okay
5:55 on the side it has like a matte black finish can you see the shininess
5:59 cameraman sort of okay good uh on the back this is where you find most of the
6:03 business end of this particular device it's got a Kensington lock I'm really
6:07 happy to see that then it's got a power button there's your USB interface and
6:11 there's your power in okay this is all seems to be uh ventilation so if you
6:15 actually look at it from this angle can you see that you can kind of see in
6:20 where the drive is can can you tell okay
6:23 yeah you can you can see that and then if you look in at this angle on the top
6:26 you can actually see the the top of the drive so all these vent holes make sure
6:30 that the drive stays nice and cool oh and the bottom is open too so it's going
6:34 to use natural convection to um to let
6:37 the heat rise out the top and then come in from the bottom that's kind of nice
6:40 so at the front there's our LCD screen
6:44 and then there's the power indicator LED
6:47 just a little tiny one you know what I like to see that because you see so many
6:51 external devices with these obnoxiously Bright Power indicators in fact the
6:55 cameraman has a couple just like that he's nodding to me and uh they they can
6:59 like keep you up at night because they're so bright then there's a wd logo
7:03 and that's pretty much all there is to it I mean it's quite simple really the
7:07 one thing that I don't see is um a disc
7:10 for their software I'm guessing it comes pre-loaded and all you have to do is
7:13 plug it in which would stand to reason we could try plugging it in but I think
7:18 that'll take too long why don't we do that in a separate video thank you for checking out my video blog on unboxing
7:23 the WD My Book Elite
