0:07 something off is usually pretty simple rotate the key flick the switch or burp
0:12 the garlic pizza you just ate directly into the face of your hot date but for
0:17 some reason turning off your computer is this complicated ordeal I mean arguably
0:23 it isn't difficult to click start then
0:27 shut down or just tap the button on your
0:30 chassis but instead of turning off instantly your PC always goes through
0:36 some kind of rigmarole that can last for minutes before it finally powers down
0:41 well hold on a minute Linus why can't I
0:46 just hold the button for five seconds or flip the switch at the back to force an
0:50 instant shutdown well it turns out that
0:53 there is a method to the madness you see
0:56 when you click that shutdown button your
1:00 computer goes through a series of steps that are primarily designed to protect
1:04 your data killing the power abruptly
1:08 while you have unsaved work on your screen means that that work is probably
1:13 lost for good and even though some modern programs have autosave features
1:18 they are far from perfect so one of the
1:21 delays you might encounter is the PC prompting you to save anything that you
1:27 might have open like a Word document or an image that you're editing but there
1:32 are also less evident things going on in the background chief among these is that
1:38 your operating system sends signals to running programs and services that it's
1:44 time to power down so it tells these
1:47 programs to wrap up whatever it is they're doing kind of like a parent
1:51 trying to get their hyperactive kids to lie down for the evening this is
1:55 important because these programs and services may be in the middle of writing
2:00 data to your disk and this could be anything from a program update to a file
2:05 download to a registry key being modified so there's a common theme here
2:11 then you the very real risk of data
2:14 corruption if you just power off your computer without warning it's a little
2:19 bit like yanking a cake out of the oven before checking if it's done just like
2:24 that cake might not be anything that you'd want to eat the half-written data
2:29 might not be anything that your computer can actually use and because of the way
2:35 that some computer drives and file systems work you can learn more about
2:39 those up here you might not only corrupt whatever data was being written at the
2:44 time of power down you might also damage other files that are in a cache or a
2:50 nearby physical location on your device
2:53 fortunately the file system used by modern versions of Windows called NTFS
2:58 has a feature called journaling essentially that means that it keeps a
3:03 log of data changes to reduce the risk of corruption however problems can still
3:10 occur if you don't shut your computer off properly hence the disk check
3:13 messages that you sometimes get when powering your system back on after a
3:18 power outage or similar bringing us to
3:21 one of the biggest reasons that people force a system reset system updates that
3:28 seemed to take an eternity when you just need to wrap up some work
3:32 and go to sleep well there is a reason
3:36 that your screen explicitly tells you not to turn off the power during a
3:42 typical power loss you're likely to lose a little bit of unsaved work but turning
3:48 off your PC during an update can result
3:51 in problems that will prevent the system from even booting backup such as
3:56 corrupted half-written registry files or system files so I would even suggest
4:02 that plugging your computer into a UPS or making sure that you have a fully
4:07 charged laptop battery during updates isn't a bad idea
4:11 basically the moral of the story is that unless your computer is hopelessly
4:16 frozen and you have no choice but to completely kill the power make sure you
4:21 turn your system off properly it may take a little more time but trust me
4:26 it's a lot easier than having to reinstall Windows or try to recover a
4:31 savegame that you've dumped 500 hours into
4:36 really that's funny Dennis do you think that's funny you often find
4:41 yourself trying to control two computers at once and getting confused like which
4:45 keyboard and which Mouse goes with which well synergy is the solution for you
4:50 synergy is a software tool that's our I'll stop that now solves the problem of
4:54 having two or more keyboards and mice you see with synergy you can share just
4:59 a single mouse and keyboard across multiple computers and multiple screens
5:04 so there's no more messing around when you have to switch from your you know
5:08 your video editing workstation to your development workstation and its features
5:13 include clipboard sharing dragging and dropping files between computers custom
5:17 hotkeys and more synergy is available in
5:21 basic and pro versions with the latter including ssl encryption to secure the
5:25 data sent between the machines and they're offering a 50% discount - tech
