0:01 it's amazing when you take a moment to look around how much technology is all
0:06 around us I mean they're building Quantum Computing chips two
0:10 municipalities away in Burnaby and down
0:13 the street from our office seriously it's so close that we could hit it with
0:18 a potato cannon Excelsior measuring has
0:21 got a thirty thousand dollar laser
0:24 scanner that they've invited us to go take a look at so uh
0:29 we're walking there it's a crazy cool piece of kit that allows you to turn
0:35 this into this
0:42 and this video is brought to you by thermaltake the thermaltake core P90
0:47 tempered glass case features five millimeter thick glass and angled open
0:51 frame design a bunch of different layout options with vertical GPU mounting with
0:55 a riser cable included and more you can check it out at the link in the video
0:59 description
1:08 foreign so this place is actually pretty cool the owner Daniel has been a long
1:12 time viewer they've got a gigantic floor mat when you walk in that's like
1:16 Excelsior and everyone from their
1:20 bookkeeper all the way up to the folks working on 3D modeling or graphic design
1:25 or using custom hand-built workstations so it's a pretty cool vibe in this place
1:31 anyway this is the BLK
1:36 360. wow and I've been asked very nicely
1:39 by the owner here not to drop it I see
1:42 my reputation has preceded me somewhat but don't worry don't worry I'm I'm
1:46 experienced at this sort of thing what does this cost to get 30 grand anyway so
1:51 this puppy right here will do three
1:54 separate types of skins all simultaneously it does photo it does 3D
2:01 with what's called a a point cloud or
2:04 something along those lines and this little sticker right here that I guess
2:08 Fleer probably Twisted leica's ARM to include on it it also does thermal
2:13 scanning at the same time so it'll
2:17 actually record depending on the quality of the scan that you're going for
2:21 anywhere from a hundred thousand to 360
2:26 000 data points per second as it Spurs
2:30 around and spins around whether it's a room or or outdoor or whatever it is
2:36 that you're trying to scan in terms of of accessories I don't often get to
2:40 unbox things that cost this much you get a car adapter
2:45 so you on your way to a site you know if you're driving up to Kamloops or
2:49 something you can have it charging up you get uh a battery
2:54 you get a wall charger with
2:58 International adapters and finally
3:05 a battery charger
3:08 for the wall charger so you can charge
3:12 the batteries wow okay give me a second I gotta get all this stuff out of the
3:15 way all right so uh let's take a bit of
3:19 a closer look here oh
3:22 all right there we go
3:25 so that's it that's all there is to it it's got like
3:30 a blasted aluminum housing it's got uh
3:34 oh I guess I'm gonna need that battery there we go it's got a battery
3:38 compartment at the back
3:46 look at that smooth action on the door that that is what thirty thousand
3:50 dollars buys you and then you got your power button on the front and man
3:55 there's not a lot to it so here on the back they've got three 15 megapixel
4:01 cameras and what those do is they take the photographic image of the site so
4:06 they will actually create a 150 megapixel Dome around the location
4:13 where the camera is set up so the doodad in the middle is going to spin around
4:17 like this and then the whole unit is going to spin around 360 degrees and
4:22 it's going to basically measure the distance between the BLK 360 and all the
4:29 objects surrounded as as Point data and then that will all have to be assembled
4:33 after the fact now it can hold something to the tune of a hundred scans on its
4:38 built-in memory and the accuracy of this so out to about 60 meters is within four
4:46 millimeters so there are quite a few applications of this technology but what
4:51 Excelsior measuring does with it is they get scans of the outsides of buildings
4:56 because a lot of the time if you want to uh let's say put an addition on a house
5:01 or if you want to change something about a commercial construction project what
5:05 you have to do is you have to submit to the city and as built measurement of the
5:10 building it's not good enough to send blueprints because they might not have
5:13 been adhered to perfectly so in the old days you would have to take like a like
5:18 a pocket laser range finder and just
5:22 kind of sort of math everything based on angles
5:25 this you just plunk it down in the parking lot
5:29 press run and it gets you all of the
5:32 measurements to within that four millimeter accuracy I was talking about and it can actually even run out in sort
5:37 of a light mist it's ip54 rated now it's
5:40 not perfect it doesn't handle or this model anyway doesn't handle things like
5:44 the inside of a k very well so for mining applications they've got a more
5:49 powerful model because it doesn't handle like blacks or or dark blues or
5:53 reflective surfaces but for their application it has proven to be very
5:58 very useful but enough talking about it
6:01 they've actually agreed to let us borrow it so we're going to take this back to
6:05 our office and get a 3D scan of the Linus Media Group building okay so here
6:10 we are in our set we're actually running a scan right now we're probably going to
6:14 have to discard this one because it's going to have my face in it but don't don't worry too much about that
6:18 basically what it's going to take is about six placements here in our our
6:25 apartment set slash studio for us to
6:28 build such an accurate digital representation of it that anyone who had
6:34 the file could go and create a real life
6:37 Recreation of this studio like that
6:41 I mean it's construction so there's like permits and stuff but but like like a
6:47 slow okay so now we're running the last scan
6:52 and then what we're gonna do is we're gonna send all of this point cloud data
6:57 back with Daniel to his company they're gonna process it and we're gonna go
7:01 check out the results tomorrow okay so
7:05 normally they have a week to do this kind of stuff so we're gonna go a little
7:08 bit easy on them but we are back in the office and Daniel's got a 3D scan of our
7:16 studio that we can actually just what like fly through whoa
7:21 holy crap
7:26 so this you guys is the bedroom set it
7:29 goes all the way up to the ceiling too okay so Daniel's company uses this
7:33 primarily for measuring like uh surveying a construction project as we
7:37 mentioned before but this Tech has actually been known to be used in the
7:43 production industry as well so what they could do is they could take a space or
7:49 in our case a set or a location and then
7:52 they could import this information because this is all just just just like
7:57 a point Cloud they can take all this information and they can create a model
8:01 in 3ds Max or Maya and then what they
8:04 could actually do is they could build up a set including lighting locations and
8:11 see once they've rendered it out using obviously quite powerful Hardware
8:14 what exactly it would look like in real
8:18 life so it's super cool stuff that these guys are doing here at Excelsior
8:21 measuring they're not like a sponsor for the video or anything they're just a
8:25 local company that was literally down the street that had a fun toy to play
8:28 with that ended up being actually even
8:31 cooler than I expected so hopefully you
8:34 guys enjoyed coming along for the ride
