0:00 traditionally computer monitors have been much smaller than tvs you know to
0:05 fit on your desk and with much higher pixel density to make them suitable for
0:10 up-close viewing of fine details like text
0:14 but thanks to 4k ultra hd resolution
0:18 a 43-inch tv would actually have the same detail
0:23 level at an equal distance as a 21.5
0:26 inch 1080p monitor which seems to be exactly what lg was
0:32 thinking when they created the 43 ud-79
0:37 a product they're calling a monitor
0:40 that's the size of a tv for a price that's somewhere in between
0:56 check out ibuypower's gaming desktops featuring Intel 7th generation core i7
1:00 7700k processor on newegg at the link below
1:04 the 43 ud 79 or ud as i'll be calling it
1:09 is the biggest monitor ever to grace our
1:12 lab beating the previous champ phil who you can meet over here by three whole
1:18 inches the idea here is that the giant factory
1:23 calibrated ips panel will give you wide viewing angles and accurate though not
1:28 professional grade colors making tasks like heavy multitasking system
1:33 monitoring and wolf of wall street style stock trading super immersive without
1:40 the head turning or disruptive bezels that a multi-screen setup would require
1:45 okay then with you so far
1:49 this giant uncurved monitor then rests
1:52 on a 13 pound stand that gets an extra bonus by the way for being super hefty
1:58 but and this won't be the last tv-like thing about it like most tvs has very
2:03 limited mobility we get a nice amount of tilt but no height adjust or swivel
2:09 which might actually be a bigger deal than normal if you want to quickly turn
2:13 ud from your office chair to your bed for movie time
2:17 around the back io is unusually well labeled a really nice touch for anyone
2:21 who doesn't have the resolution support chart memorized for every revision of
2:25 HDMI not to mention super comprehensive
2:29 the extra type c port for displayport is particularly forward thinking and here's
2:34 something interesting it's got an rs232c
2:37 port this was the standard for connecting modems and other peripherals to your pc
2:42 before usb came along and more importantly in the home theater world
2:47 it's used to connect your home automation and control systems so you
2:51 can do things like automatically mute the tv when the doorbell rings cool
2:55 right but wait a minute it's almost as if lg
3:00 wants you to use ud like you would a tv
3:03 he even comes with a freaking remote that you can use instead of the nipple
3:07 interface to turn the brightness
3:10 up and down and control the volume
3:13 volume that's right like again many of lg's tvs
3:18 ud is equipped with two 10 watt speakers
3:21 and unlike most monitor speakers they're surprisingly not bad
3:27 okay Linus so what's the hecking difference between a monitor with
3:31 speakers and a tv then well if you're my
3:34 grandparents and you still have a coax cable plugged into the back of your tv
3:39 instead of a digital set-top box that connects via HDMI i guess there's that
3:44 but otherwise not much
3:47 so let's talk then about what it's like to use a tv-like monitor
3:52 frankly at normal desk distance it is not my
3:56 favorite personally yes you can use lg's included screen
4:01 splitting software to have four 21-inch Windows open at a time
4:05 but most of the content we create around
4:08 here and consume like word documents and just
4:12 about anything on the web is better when your window is taller
4:16 than it is wide so even though ud is six
4:20 inches taller than the 38 inch ultra wide on my desk
4:24 the whole ultra wide pitch also from lg
4:28 was that it fits your field of view so then depending on your personal
4:33 preference that might end up being six inches of not very useful space because
4:38 you need to move your mouse not to mention your eyes a long way between the
4:44 bottom and the top of the screen which combined with the stand's immobility can
4:49 make for a fatiguing experience and finally there's pixel density
4:54 everyone agrees 4k tvs look amazing from
4:57 the couch but we're sitting really close here at
5:01 this size neither james nor i was that impressed and with high-end displays
5:06 shipping with retina-like sharpness
5:09 this really felt like a step backwards to me and in response to your comment
5:14 jeff no i'm not gonna move the screen back
5:18 because if i was gonna do that wouldn't i just save a buck and get a smaller
5:22 screen all of that said not everyone will agree
5:27 some of you will really want a ginormous
5:30 display but this one at 43 inches and 700 costs
5:36 about what a 4k 55 inch tv would
5:40 so why not just buy the tv then
5:43 well pixel density at that size is even more
5:46 of an issue but other than that there used to be some additional and serious
5:52 concerns when using a tv as a monitor like high color compression that made
5:56 text look blurry and brutal input lag
5:59 that made gaming nearly impossible but these are non-issues on many modern
6:04 tv sets where 444 chroma sub sampling
6:07 keeps the text readable and features like game mode lower the input lag to
6:11 more workable levels though it must be said that not every
6:15 new tv's game mode actually turns all image processing off displaylag.com is a
6:20 great resource for finding one that doesn't suck bottom line then
6:25 a lot of tvs have pretty much caught up to monitor performance except for
6:30 special features like ultra high refresh rates that are demanded by hardcore
6:34 gamers so back to ud then if beauty had
6:39 cutting-edge monitor-only features like freesync or g-sync for gamers as well as
6:45 higher refresh rate and super low input lag
6:49 then it would be able to clearly differentiate itself from both a tv and
6:56 a monitor as it is though it's an in-between size with mostly tv-like
7:01 performance and features at a reasonable price
7:05 making it a solid product and one that lots of people will like especially
7:09 given the matte panel when most tvs are glossy
7:12 but it's not for me personally so i'm going with the official
7:16 meh it's up to you i guess stamp of approval i mean that is what you guys
