0:07 yep that's me i bet you're wondering how i
0:10 ended up in this situation well let's just say the world is a tough
0:14 place for a tablet trying to be a laptop i'd explain why but i think the better
0:19 person to tell that story is the guy that just threw me away
0:23 well at least i landed on something soft
0:34 believe it or not this is only the third chrome os powered pixel device that
0:39 google has released like i know right
0:43 so first we had the chromebook pixel way back in 2013. it looked very similar to
0:48 a macbook and it was positioned as a high-end option for google's chrome os
0:53 which until then was a fixture on 150
0:57 laptops and not much else it was supposed to
1:01 lead the way forward clearing a path for
1:04 chromebooks to become a real alternative to Windows pcs and macs
1:09 but while chrome os did continue to develop
1:13 that vision never really came to fruition and we wouldn't see chrome os
1:17 on another pixel device until a whopping four years later with 2017's pixel book
1:24 now our verdict on that device was about
1:27 the same as the original chromebook pixel pretty good hardware
1:31 bad software and too expensive
1:35 not to be deterred by its past failures though google has now added the pixel
1:40 slate to the lineup seemingly thinking that maybe chrome os with its ability to
1:45 natively run Android apps would work better as a tablet that could also be
1:50 used as a laptop than as a laptop that can run tablet apps
1:55 and well actually they are partially correct
2:01 as a tablet the pixel slate is
2:04 surprisingly pretty great the 3000 by 2000 resolution lcd display is bright
2:09 and decently color accurate it's thin it's light and the dual front-facing
2:14 speakers are simply put
2:17 incredible like there's way more lows
2:21 and mids than you'd expect to hear from a mobile device seriously these speakers
2:26 are sick and it's got some other features that
2:29 are notably absent from the ipad pro that really hurt apple's case for the
2:35 ipad pro as a laptop replacement one the
2:38 pixel slate has mouse support kind of a big deal apple
2:42 two usb type-c ports
2:46 that is to say it has two usb type-c
2:49 ports not the usb type-c ports are point number two
2:54 well i mean it is that too anyway anyway both of them can be used for charging
2:57 which opens up the accessory possibilities a fair bit three it has
3:02 support for external storage external storage like come on let's get
3:07 a round of applause here yeah yeah yeah
3:10 and four you can set the screen at more than two angles
3:15 nice but comparing devices based on their specs and features won't get us
3:19 the whole story here so we need to dive a little bit deeper starting with
3:23 pricing some of the loadouts of the pixel slate look pretty decent until you
3:28 look closely here and realize that are paying a thousand us dollars for a
3:33 device with a mere 128 gigs of storage that's kind of rough
3:38 with that said at least the i o is decent and the 48 watt hour battery had
3:43 no problem lasting all day with pretty heavy use making the real question here
3:50 would i want to use this thing all day
3:54 if the answer were going to be yes i would start by attaching the
3:59 pixel slate keyboard and then drowning my regret in its sort
4:05 of rubbery felt material like
4:09 i don't know how to put this other than that this thing is just plain
4:14 not good enough for the price
4:17 the palm rest for the keyboard is plastic and it attaches to the back of
4:22 the slate with magnets but the magnets slip when you're trying to maneuver the
4:28 thing making it feel just like kind of
4:32 cheap in the hand as you're as you're carrying it around like it moves around
4:36 and even though once you've got it set up the angle can be adjusted quite a bit
4:41 with the magnets locking it in place across this whole range of motion
4:46 the keyboard is just downer it's mushy with no real
4:51 tactile feel the round kind of weird feeling keycaps wiggle without actually
4:56 activating and the hinge well
5:00 it's less of a hinge so much as it's like kind of a flap of material making
5:05 it a hassle to use the pixel slate when it's in your lap now the trackpad is
5:10 better it feels nice and smooth and the multi-touch gestures work well
5:15 but unfortunately it almost single-handedly defeats what was left of
5:21 the pixel slate's lap usability as
5:24 slightly flexing the keyboard
5:27 will click the trackpad discovering which was probably the single most wtf
5:33 moment during the creation of this review for those of you who are wondering
5:37 making this whole situation even more confusing is the fact that the google
5:42 store lists the bridge g-type wireless keyboard which is more of a traditional
5:47 plastic laptop keyboard on the google store for 40 less than the slate
5:51 keyboard and reviews of the bridge keyboard almost unanimously recommend it
5:56 over the slate keyboard but anyway anyway anyway it's a tablet right so
6:02 let's change gears here and talk about touch input i'm like what
6:07 about the available 100 pixel book pen
6:10 yeah it's it's mostly cool it's powered by a
6:14 single quadruple a battery and
6:18 using it right after reviewing the ipad pro with the apple pencil
6:24 did not do this any favors it has a slightly larger diameter so it felt kind
6:30 of you know novelty sized in the hand and
6:34 google says that the pen has
6:37 virtually no leg but um
6:41 i don't know i must just have like super amazing eyes because i can pretty
6:46 clearly see the uh stroke trailing
6:49 behind the pen tip here and you guys probably can too like it is not
6:55 like the apple pencils i mean some of this probably feels like
7:00 nitpicking but to the kinds of people who use styluses
7:04 styli stylized style styluses
7:07 it's actually really important that it
7:10 feels natural now remember i said that the apple
7:15 pencil experience was the most compelling reason to consider the ipad
7:20 pro as a laptop replacement so
7:23 the thing is is that given that this is a similarly priced solution
7:28 why settle then for anything but the best stylist experience
7:33 another issue is that there is no way to attach the pen to the tablet like
7:40 you can uh put it in this little groove
7:45 but but i mean
7:48 calling that a stylus resting point is kind of like saying
7:52 that this car has ten cup holders in it
7:57 in my opinion they should have just used that space to
8:01 allow the keyboard to snap up at an angle on the screen like the surface
8:05 keyboard so that's the hardware all wrapped up how about the software
8:09 how about the software ah yes chrome os
8:13 it has certainly made progress over the years we're at the point now where with
8:17 the combined power of chrome extensions and Android apps you can actually do a
8:22 ton of desktop type stuff including file management connecting external displays
8:28 and of course using the full desktop version of the chrome browser
8:32 in fairness to google it is definitely
8:35 more of a desktop operating system than iOS is the question though
8:41 is is it just as much of a full desktop os as
8:46 Windows or macOS and the answer is
8:50 no no no what kind of stupid question is that of
8:54 course not Android apps sometimes adjust well to being used in a desktop
8:58 environment but at other times they act exactly like they do on your phone which
9:03 can be pretty disappointing like it just doesn't seem right that i had an easier
9:08 time using microsoft word on an ipad
9:11 than i did on chrome os i just use google docs hey
9:17 who said that i'll use whatever word processor i want
9:22 now to be fair google doesn't seem to be
9:26 making the same replace your computer argument that apple is with the ipad pro
9:31 opting for more of a work and play message but my question in response to
9:36 that is who exactly
9:40 is working and playing with this the technology is cool and i understand
9:45 that the engineers that are behind products like this are trying new and
9:50 cool things and that's important like they might be thinking well
9:54 we have Android tablets or iOS tablets for that matter and we also have laptops
9:59 wouldn't it be cool to combine these things to blur the lines and the answer
10:04 is yes it is cool when it works well but when it doesn't
10:10 well the customer is just going to find themselves mad that they're a beta
10:13 tester for a concept device that they paid
10:17 just as much for as they would have paid for something that is frankly more
10:21 polished maybe the problem here is that i'm just
10:25 jaded i mean when you review as many tech products as i do it becomes easy to
10:30 see the flaws and after using device after device
10:33 after device oftentimes at the end of the day i just want something that just
10:38 works well and does what i expect it to
10:42 in an emergency if i've gotta throw together a couple video clips
10:47 having some options for video editing programs i mean the thing's available
10:51 with up to a core i7 like i should be able to do real work on it if it comes
10:55 to that and it falls flat and maybe that
10:59 attitude sometimes prevents me from recognizing the fact that
11:03 the things i hold in my hand
11:06 on your screen are the results of
11:10 weeks months and even years of work by talented
11:14 engineers and designers like they're out there trying to create something that
11:19 could be the future of computing
11:22 i just feel like right now for my money i'm better off
11:27 with the present of computing rather than a promise of what's to come
11:32 the ipad pro that has its own niche
11:36 but like how about this for a general purpose two
11:40 in one a reasonable price sturdy build quality a headphone jack
11:46 maybe a desktop os a really good pen um
11:51 maybe if we had something like oh right the surface pro we have that
11:56 and yeah the surface pro isn't perfect either
12:00 but what it is is a heck of a lot better than this
12:03 so uh maybe in another four years google
12:07 so that's what happened i guess this is my home now
12:11 oh wait maybe he's coming back for me he's got hope that the issues can be
12:16 fixed with updates no he's grabbing his water bottle
12:21 so thanks for watching guys if this video sucked you know what to do but if
12:25 it was awesome get subscribed hit that like button or check out the link to
12:28 where to buy the stuff we featured in the video description also down there
12:32 is our merch store which has cool shirts like the one i'm wearing and our community forum which you should totally
12:36 join the fact that it like slips off like that so easily
12:42 it's just freaking annoying like this
12:47 this flappy doodle here is just not good enough
