0:00 how does one go from an idea what if we could use the lg signature
0:05 series OLED wallpaper tv to make a
0:08 window to anywhere to the realization of one of the coolest
0:14 projects that we've ever done
0:17 well in my case you ask your wife to do it
0:27 no one externally seems to have any idea what Yvonne actually does here but
0:32 coordinating random design and construction projects including our most
0:37 recent setup grade has been a much larger part of her role than anyone
0:41 including her probably expected and that's not always an easy thing to deal
0:45 with Linus asked me to help with this project and gave me zero instructions
0:49 for what to do and how to film this or
0:52 anything beyond make it cool and modern and have
0:58 a window but like the window's a tv i confess i was pretty hands off on this
1:03 one but let's face it if i was in charge we all know how it would end up looking
1:08 so Yvonne brought in carpenter and super
1:11 nice guy george to lend us his woodworking expertise and after much
1:15 debate the decision was made that in order to make the tv as easy to remove
1:20 as possible what we were going to do was attach it
1:24 to an mdf backing with the factory mount
1:27 then slide the whole thing into a hollowed-out cavity using the window
1:32 casing to hold it in so step one
1:36 go get the tv from the a-roll set we mangled the flat magnetic wall mount
1:41 a little bit by over tightening it last time but we managed to stretch it out on
1:46 our mdf getting it nice and flat well that is to say george managed to stretch
1:51 it out on the mdf my attempt to screw it on was so crooked we had to completely
1:55 redo it then we mounted the tv to it not
1:58 entirely without mishap traced the outline to get the exact
2:02 dimensions for our window and finally cut it out with a circular saw
2:07 a table saw might have been a bit better but with a steady hand this should do
2:12 the trick throughout this process Yvonne was
2:15 working on the design aspects of the office upgrade removing the mouse wall
2:19 clock and Linus media group sign and puttying over the incredible amount of
2:24 damage that the construction glue did to the drywall
2:28 next step cut out the hole
2:31 there is a little bit of room for error here because we'll be adding a frame to
2:36 make the window effect more convincing but
2:39 if our drywall cutout isn't truly square
2:43 we'll end up covering part of the screen in the corners
2:46 so if there was ever a time for measure twice cut once this is it
2:50 next some angle grinder tips from george
2:54 followed by twisting out the rest of the metal studs before measuring cutting and
2:59 adding wood framing on all four sides to
3:02 friction mount the tv's backing so much for that work that we just did
3:08 filling in this wall a few weeks ago now
3:12 everything up until now has been done sort of on faith that it's going to work
3:16 if the mdf backing or the hole in the wall haven't been cut perfectly or the
3:21 flat ribbon cable on the back of the tv doesn't line up with our pass-through
3:25 hole to carry it down to the hidden speaker bar below we could be looking at
3:30 hours of cleanup
3:33 oh perfect fit and it's good now obviously we wouldn't
3:38 trust just friction on the back plate to hold the tv in place i mean come on what
3:42 is this channel where we drop things you need the 100 silent edition which
3:46 plugged in it's more like a a porta
3:57 so the next step was to create a frame for the tv that's meant to be both
4:02 aesthetic giving our recessed tv a more
4:05 window like appearance and functional
4:08 since it's foam backed so it can sit right up snug against the glass and it
4:14 fits much tighter to hold the whole thing in
4:19 after a few test fits it got a coat of black paint
4:22 better to do that now rather than risk getting paint on the tv while cutting
4:26 around its fine details now it's time to put the tv on its mdf
4:31 carrier for the last time some duct tape pull tabs here should
4:35 help us get the panel out in the future if we ever decide to tear the window out
4:40 and relocate while mounting the tv we needed to be
4:43 extra careful with the fragile flat ribbon cable a task made especially
4:49 difficult by the extension that we planned to use to hide the speaker bar
4:53 away under the built-in desk time now
4:56 then for some putty touch-ups and a final fitting of the black frame and
5:00 then you can rotate there we go yeah that works too this is actually when i
5:05 saw it for the first time and i immediately wondered
5:09 how exactly we were going to hook up the speaker bar which also happens to have
5:13 all of the inputs and outputs for the w
5:17 series OLED but i was assured there was a plan for
5:20 cutting out some of the drywall and fishing it out they just apparently
5:24 needed someone with really really small fingers to actually do it yes it's
5:29 through there moment of truth time having survived a
5:33 drop some bending and the last couple of days
5:37 in a construction zone would the tv still work
5:43 yes now the second goal of this project was
5:47 to make the workspace match the hyper-modern design of having a super
5:51 thin tv as your window so it was time then for a custom built-in desk with a
5:56 purpose-built holder for the speaker bar underneath
6:00 with a little bit of trial and error we managed to deal with the awkward length
6:04 extension giving us a completely clean
6:07 look without restricting our access to io
6:11 here's how i kind of envision using the new setup
6:14 a couple shelves some cable pass-throughs and some paint and we're
6:18 getting pretty close to finished but
6:21 between paint drying times and waiting for a few small items not least of which
6:27 is some sexy brandon footage to play in the window brandon
6:31 sexy footage getting the knot cool we're out of stuff that we can do for right
6:35 now so stay tuned for part three which is going to be the glammed up tour of
6:40 the finished ultimate productivity setup
