0:00 we recently had Sage reach out to us about sponsoring a piece of content that
0:04 demonstrated the benefits of their security and home automation
0:08 ecosystem but as I was sitting on the couch tinkering with their Hub that
0:12 connects to your TV I realized something my son who just turned four wasn't
0:18 impressed At All by the idea that the doorbell ringing could trigger a
0:22 notification on my phone and a picture in picture view of whoever's standing
0:26 outside he took it completely for granted so I was inspired to create this
0:32 list of seven differences between when I was his age and
0:45 today first things first when I was the same age as my eldest son all of my toys
0:50 required me to do all the voices and the
0:54 actions myself this fraking thing would have
0:57 completely blown my mind it even knows his name I'm pretending to be a horse
1:04 and that's not the only thing that does all the work for you I mean burn stain
1:08 Bears visit the dentist is great and all but this this is progress believe the
1:14 Ewok think C3PO is magical number two video games were
1:20 Nostalgia filter aside objectively worse
1:24 and I was one of the lucky ones I had a Game Gear I mean that thing had a color
1:29 screen back in 1990 just too bad it only
1:32 stayed on for about 3 hours every time you put six ablea batteries in it a
1:37 practice that would probably make the mobile games with autosave generation
1:42 say very cringe much old man technology
1:46 if they even say that anymore number three movie content may have been
1:51 similar or better I'll put home word bound up against Jango Unchained or
1:55 whatever any day but finding physical media realizing it's not
2:04 rewind my kids won't even know that those were Innovations to put it in
2:09 context I graduated high school when YouTube was invented and my kids will
2:14 take for granted that watching any video they want is as simple as clicking an
2:20 icon not to mention the constant interruptions if the doorbell rang
2:24 during my Saturday morning cartoons I had to get off my butt and go see who it
2:28 was which
2:31 okay so nothing quite like that ever happened you can tell cuz I'm standing
2:35 here today but this is one of the coolest things about the sage home
2:38 automation system you've got a picture and picture view of the scary guy so
2:42 you've at least got a few second Head Start to go hide under your blanket
2:46 number four well I'm pretty sure that every generation thinks homework is a
2:50 total drag trust me kids it was worse
2:54 when I was a kid I mean that was even before in Carta encyclopedia on CD ROM
2:59 when we had to actually sign out actual books from an actual Library most of
3:04 which were horrifyingly out of date because yay school funding and don't
3:08 even get me started on pens I mean between the backspace button and
3:13 Wikipedia which may not be perfect but it's a great starting point the new
3:17 generation's only excuse for being uninformed is pure
3:21 laziness which leads us pretty well into number five when I was already snuggled
3:26 up in bed in the winter and I wanted to turn off the lights I had to get off my
3:31 butt and turn off a light switch or if I was one of the cool kids I might have
3:34 had a Clapper just don't install those things too close to each other hey by
3:40 contrast there is an entire generation of people for whom not being able to
3:46 control lights with a phone or a smartwatch is going to be completely
3:50 Unthinkable number six communication was
3:53 a completely different animal thank you cards were written by hand I'm pretty
3:59 sure my son has grandma on Facebook and for voice communication you actually had
4:03 to remember your friend's number or look it up in the phone book everyone just
4:08 doesn't understand me you know and even then privacy was never a guarantee like
4:13 if if they would just listen then they would they would understand me better
4:17 you know just a sec hey is someone
4:20 listening this this is
4:26 awesome seven is one thing that may have actually seemed better at the time
4:31 coming home after school there was pretty much no way for my parents to
4:35 know if I was actually practicing with piano or not but from a parents
4:40 perspective being able to check in on the home and see if workbooks are
4:44 actually being completed is a pretty big Boon number eight music playback has
4:50 definitely improved CDs brought improved audio quality and easy track skipping
4:55 but even that improvement over cassette tape sucks compared to subscription
4:59 music services that cost the same as a handful of albums per year would have
5:04 especially when you factor in that most of the songs weren't even things that
5:07 you'd like with that said though you could make the argument that the quality
5:11 of the music itself hasn't changed
5:16 much so thanks for watching guys if this video made you cringe you know what to
5:21 do but if it was awesome or you know got some of the Nostalgia juices flowing hit
