0:00 it's that time of year again full spectrum absorption of light weekend's
0:04 eve is but a blink away and man 2018 has been a pretty solid year for
0:09 CPU releases hey now if you guys have seen our past
0:12 buyer's guides you know the drill it's all about the value you get for your
0:17 dollar but unlike our last CPU buyer's guide in
0:21 2016 we are not focused solely on team
0:25 blue i mean at that time ryzen was but a twinkle in lisa sue's eye but this time
0:30 the playing field is wide open so here
0:33 it comes our recommendations for gaming
0:36 workstation and combined all-rounder
0:39 cpus at three price points with each of them linked in the video description
0:44 below which theoretically you could just scroll right down to and and buy one of
0:49 them now but we that we'd love for you to keep watching and see how we made our
0:53 choices world of warships is a free-to-play historical online combat
0:57 game from wargaming featuring an exciting blend of action and strategic
1:00 gameplay stay tuned later in the video for an exclusive offer
1:12 let's start off with what hasn't changed this year
1:16 our definition of value value is a surprisingly tough concept to
1:21 convey because it is not simply about the price of a particular part i mean if
1:27 it were we'd just tell everyone to go buy this 3.4 gigahertz dual core for 350
1:33 on ebay or an athlon 200 ge and be done
1:37 with it instead we are focused on the greatest amount of performance we can
1:41 get per dollar we spend sort of
1:45 you see even that still presents a problem
1:49 because that athlon 200 ge will appear
1:53 to be a tremendous value even for demanding tasks if we only consider its
1:59 price and not the price of the hardware
2:02 that it's going to be married to by taking the rest of the system into
2:06 account we can determine the value that the CPU adds so we're going to show that
2:11 added value across three differently weighted categories and because i was a
2:15 good boy and slept with a ti 84 under my pillow last night the spreadsheet fairy
2:20 aggregated benchmark results from multiple publications to reduce the
2:24 likelihood of a single error in our data throwing us off now we're almost ready
2:28 to begin but there are a few more rules one you have to actually be able to buy
2:33 the CPU and its accompanying hardware brand new which typically means nothing
2:38 a full generation old or more two we are not looking at the used market
2:43 that's not to say that you shouldn't but due to the volatility of both
2:46 availability and pricing it's difficult to make direct recommendations and
2:51 that's to say nothing of the awareness bump that us mentioning particular
2:55 pieces of used gear always seems to cause and finally three
2:59 if the CPU costs more than half of a given system's budget it won't be making
3:04 an appearance end of story that would be stupid so let's start things off with
3:07 our all-rounder cpus the category where everything from high-end college dorm
3:12 pcs to inexpensive esports rigs reign
3:16 supreme cause it's all about that versatility at the 500 total system
3:21 price point the ryzen 5 2600 series
3:24 reigns supreme thanks to its excellent productivity performance and the basic
3:30 non-x version's ability to pretty reliably clock up to the same speeds as
3:34 the x variant that makes it an ideal choice as long as you're willing to
3:38 cheap out on your graphics card and your motherboard a little moving up to the
3:42 mid-range the answer is a little bit complicated with its excellent gaming
3:46 performance and its eight fast cores the core i7 9700k
3:51 takes this category but availability of Intel's 9000 series is
3:57 very limited right now and if your balanced workload skews more towards
4:02 productivity than gaming the threadripper 1920x might look like a
4:06 better bang for your buck except that it
4:10 and the motherboard that you'll need to install it on are going to chew up a lot
4:14 of your budget so here even though they weren't at the top of our chart the cpus
4:19 that we think most people should actually buy for a well-rounded system
4:24 are the core i7 8700k and ryzen 7 2700x
4:29 to round out the all-rounder segment we've got threadripper for days thanks
4:33 to our bloated 2 000 budget with the 2950x beating out the competition
4:38 handily in our productivity benchmarks while not being total crap for gaming
4:42 this leaves its threadripper brethren to compete with Intel's 9000 series for
4:46 second third fourth and fifth place again that is if you can actually find a
4:52 9700k on a shelf somewhere now let's shift our focus to gaming this is the
4:57 segment where per thread performance counts the most
5:00 for our budget recommendation the 2600 series again reigns supreme even at
5:07 twice the cost of a ryzen 3 2200g its
5:11 performance gains easily justify its additional expense
5:15 although given that 200 is 40 of our overall budget if you
5:20 splurge on a ryzen 5 you might be stuck with only enough left over for a
5:24 middling 1080p GPU so because the focus again is gaming now
5:29 we like the core i3 8100 or the ryzen 3
5:33 2200g so that you can avoid skimping on the quality of the rest of your rig when
5:38 we get to the mid range it looks like you basically can't go wrong with an 8th
5:42 gen core i5 except that you kind of can
5:45 now the 8600k looks great on paper
5:48 but remember that to unlock its full potential you'll need a more expensive z
5:53 series motherboard and an aftermarket
5:56 cooler pushing its true cost to 300 or
6:00 more that's totally fine if your budget is flexible but i have only a thousand
6:05 dollars so i'm gonna take the core i5 8500 as for
6:10 the high end here the core i5 8600k
6:13 takes the crown handily it's fast it's reasonably versatile with its six true
6:18 cores and it's actually available to buy
6:21 the second place core i7 9700k is also a
6:25 great bet but you might end up needing to budget for a new keyboard as
6:28 well when you wear out your f5 key trying to get your hands on one AMD does
6:32 make an appearance here with the ryzen 7 2700 series about 10 behind in pure
6:38 gaming value bringing us finally to the mighty workstation more cores more pci
6:43 express lanes more memory bandwidth more power
6:47 i know you can go pretty deep down the rabbit hole on a workstation budget the
6:51 core i9 7980xc alone is over 2 000 us
6:56 dollars and that isn't even technically the workstation model of that CPU but
7:01 anyway i doubt those buyers are concerned with our definition of value
7:05 here so let's move on at the budget end
7:08 you won't really want to spend this little on a workstation you're going to
7:12 be stuck with consumer core counts consumer pci elaine counts
7:17 but if you're desperate you can get some real work done here with a ryzen 5 2600
7:24 and really not much else it's the budget king if you can work it
7:28 into your build which if you don't need a high-end GPU for what you do should
7:33 actually be easy enough in this case your main budgetary constraints from
7:37 there would be storage and system memory
7:40 things get more comfortable when we move up to the mid-range here our
7:43 threadripper 1920x totally runs away
7:47 with the lead sort of got you guys again at 420
7:52 it seems doable but the 300 motherboard
7:56 is gonna kill you that'll leave only 280
7:59 bucks for cooling RAM drives video card case power supply
8:04 so our real recommendation here is actually the ryzen 7 2700x with the
8:09 8700k getting bumped down slightly due to its lack of ecc memory support that's
8:14 a real factor for some people and the extra cost of its cooler and motherboard
8:19 finally our high-end workstation results should come as a surprise to no one and
8:25 can be summed up in one compound word trademark
8:29 threadripper even the most expensive threadripper CPU in our roundup the
8:34 2950x is far ahead of anything else
8:37 thanks to its decent per thread performance and the fact that well there
8:42 are 32 threads across its 16 true cores
8:46 the best team blue has to offer here is the core i9 9900k
8:51 but at its price matching the 1920x in performance just isn't enough especially
8:57 when you consider how few pci express lanes it brings to the table
9:01 our real recommendation here is the 2920x
9:04 if you don't need a quadro for your line of work or the 1920x if you need to
9:09 squeeze in a quadro p4000 so here's the summary for each of our recommendations
9:14 at each segment in each price point based on their pricing and the benchmark
9:18 data we've collected do bear in mind that some cpus without
9:23 included stock coolers will be more expensive to buy than their price tags
9:26 suggest and it should also be noted that if any of these cpus experience a price
9:31 drop or if they go on sale then your mileage may vary but assuming the price
9:35 goes down it's like in a good way so
9:38 happy turkey day speaking of support a great way to support us would be to
9:42 check out our sponsor world of warships it's a free to play strategy action game
9:47 that some would refer to as the thinking man's action game with world of warships
9:51 you can battle it out with seven million players worldwide and each in-game ship
9:57 is actually based on 3d scans of real-life ships there are over 200 ships
10:02 to unlock like the historic uss missouri and uss arizona and with four classes of
10:07 ships a bunch of upgrades weather effects and strategically designed
10:11 environments the action never ends and every match is different the game is
10:15 getting continually updated so there's always something new so go get started
10:20 new players can get a starter pack that includes up to a million free credits
10:23 the hms campbellton ship three days of premium time and more by entering code
10:29 play warships 2018. so thanks for watching guys if you
