0:00 you know i like my razer blade stealth and all but i'm also a giant nerd and
0:05 always drooling over the next big thing so i wouldn't mind upgrading it and
0:10 since razer wasn't able to scratch that itch with their last blade
0:14 itself i've been looking elsewhere for my greener pastures
0:19 now the surface laptop too it's nice
0:22 but i really want Thunderbolt the macbook pro let's take a screenshot oh
0:28 oh you're in trouble yeah no
0:31 dell xps 13 well you know what that one's close it's definitely on my list
0:35 of things to try but hp i've been both hearing and even
0:40 experiencing really great things about their x360 line for quite some time in
0:45 fact last time i looked at one two years ago i called it the best two in one yet
0:52 but now that i have the 2019 versions of the
0:55 13 and 15 inch spectre x360s in my hands
0:59 it's clear to me that my search isn't over yet because i wouldn't really
1:05 recommend buying either of these
1:09 something i would recommend buying though is our sponsor private internet
1:12 access looking for an affordable and reliable vpn well pia encrypts your
1:17 internet traffic and uses a safe protected ip check it out today at the
1:21 link in the video description
1:32 now the non-square corners of the new x360 lineup might be a little bit
1:37 polarizing but for my part at least on the 13-inch anyway
1:41 i actually kind of like it it's unique and i mean honestly the look of this
1:46 thing overall is decidedly premium like it's
1:50 it's almost screaming for that first big bonus check that a young professional
1:54 takes home from their first job out of school on the right camphor you'll find a
1:59 Thunderbolt 3 port with fast charging noise so far so good and on the left is
2:05 the power button where we actually encounter the first problem at least
2:09 with the 15 inch version with the power cable plugged in and
2:15 pointing backwards you know where it would normally go you
2:19 actually can't easily reach the power button like it's not impossible and hp's
2:24 rational is that it allows you easy access to the power button in either
2:29 laptop or tablet mode
2:32 but they also could have placed it literally
2:37 anywhere else along this edge or oh i
2:41 don't know this edge and it also would have been
2:45 accessible and avoided the power cable issue
2:48 fortunately what helps make up for this is the decent i o on both models they
2:53 managed to squeeze a full-sized usb type-a onto the 13-inch along with
2:57 type-c Thunderbolt 3 micro sd and a headphone jack and the 15-inch even gets
3:03 a full-size HDMI port on top of all of that and i mean
3:07 just you know what i actually love the style of these
3:11 things they managed to look really slim and sleek while still having full-size
3:16 ports and being eye-catching without
3:19 ending up being like tacky or gaudy
3:22 unfortunately while the look is very premium the build quality is only
3:28 good like it's better than a typical MSI notebook but
3:33 it's not on the same level as the likes of dell microsoft or apple the aluminum
3:37 chassis is rigid but not
3:40 stop the aluminum chassis is rigid but not
3:44 quite as rigid as its carbon fiber and magnesium counterparts and there's some
3:49 mild flecks in the palm area and it's got a screen that is
3:54 wobblier than my weird uncle on a friday night
3:59 or well any night performance wise though there's some
4:03 good news both of these laptops are standouts the 13-inch has a dual fan
4:08 cooling design that allows its quad-core processor to hang with the likes of the
4:12 xps 13 putting light video editing or
4:15 photo editing easily within reach and for those needing a bit more power
4:20 stepping up to the 15 inch looks like a great way to go rocking a 6 core core i7
4:25 8750h and an NVIDIA gtx 1050 ti the
4:30 larger of the spectres is able to hang with the xps 15 for professional level
4:35 performance or even light gaming
4:38 is what i would say if this display here didn't have some of
4:43 the raunchiest pixel response times that
4:46 i've seen in the last five years
4:49 like seriously i bet the camera could pick
4:54 this up no problem without even switching to high speed i'm talking 30
4:57 FPS mode just moving the mouse pointer
5:01 around on the desktop makes it look like i've got pointer trails enabled and that
5:05 is on top of the display having a little
5:09 more input leg than i'm used to now neither of these things are really
5:13 noticeable on the 13 inch so that's
5:17 well i don't know i don't want to say good because you don't really get any bonus points for meeting basic
5:21 expectations but what is noticeable on
5:24 both models are the top and the bottom
5:28 bezels everywhere else in the industry hp's
5:31 competitors are moving either to slim bezel 16x9 displays or taller aspect
5:37 ratios so that mobile users can make the most out of the screen area
5:42 hp seems to have clearly missed the memo
5:46 here also very dated the 360 degree hinge
5:50 design this is a situation where hp basically
5:53 shot themselves in the foot by creating maybe the best convertible design ever
5:59 with the spectre folio i was really hoping that with this complete redesign
6:04 of the x360 we would get that hinge
6:07 with a quad-core processor and without
6:10 the polarizing leather finish but no it's just a regular convertible
6:16 laptop with a wobbly hinge and those
6:19 little feet that get in the way of the left control and the right arrow key
6:23 back to the displays though response times aside i do have some good things
6:28 to say here both of our models are equipped with brightview displays that
6:32 feature HDR support along with excellent color accuracy and contrast and i'm a
6:38 pretty big fan of their sure view displays as well now these two units
6:42 don't have this function but basically it's a toggleable privacy display which
6:46 is great if you want to keep your information private in a public place
6:49 and as far as i know hp is the only one that offers that function
6:54 are they yeah i'm not aware of anyone else you know what just correct me in the
6:58 comments if i'm wrong anyway they also don't just look good
7:02 they feel good too with excellent touch support along with a really great
7:07 drawing and writing experience coming from the included pen something that
7:11 isn't bundled with basically every other laptop on the market
7:15 but now we've come to the point in this review where i need to address a time in
7:19 the past when i was wrong
7:22 or more accurately i was being facetious
7:26 i said that the pen holder on the spectrefolio was so bad that maybe they
7:32 just shouldn't include one at all well
7:39 no no it turns out that this having literally no way to attach the
7:44 pen to your system at all is in fact
7:48 worse something is better than nothing
7:52 so okay hp you win
7:56 sort of the webcam falls considerably short of the surface laptop but
8:02 fortunately in this massive forehead they were at least able to fit Windows
8:05 hello facial recognition which saves hp from having to listen to me complain
8:09 about the location of this fingerprint sensor
8:13 why isn't it on the power button oh wait i guess they didn't get saved
8:16 from it at all i did still complain about it that's a shame anyway you don't
8:20 have to use it the speaker grille placement above the keyboard looks
8:23 really nice and the speakers themselves are pretty good but while that lost
8:28 keyboard space at the top isn't a problem for the 15 on the 13 it means
8:33 that anyone with big hands is going to end up resting uncomfortably on this
8:38 actually surprisingly sharp edge what makes this more frustrating is that
8:42 otherwise this is quite a good keyboard the keystrokes are long and quiet and
8:48 although the feel might not be quite as crisp as the surface laptop i still
8:52 really appreciate what hp has done with the switches with me being able to get
8:56 up to full speed very quickly what is simply unacceptable though is the
9:01 trackpad and that's what actually inspired the title of this video it's
9:05 the same unit on both models which means that it's a pretty good size on that 13
9:10 inch and they both have very serious
9:13 palm rejection and acceleration issues
9:16 for some reason hp has opted to use
9:19 synaptics as touch pad drivers instead of the Windows precision ones and the
9:24 experience is just awful like here watch
9:28 this if i move slowly
9:31 close to the edge
9:36 it's actually several centimeters of movement before the track pad even
9:41 registers my finger being there it's so bad that when i
9:46 first used this machine i i assumed it was broken and that we
9:50 would have to delay our review so we could wait to swap it out for another
9:54 unit but then both of them behaved in exactly the same
9:59 way now as it turns out this dead zone can
10:03 be tuned in the synaptic software but then you get palm rejection issues
10:08 because that's how it does it and it also turns
10:12 out that other laptops do have a similar
10:15 dead zone like on the surface laptop it turns out there is roughly a centimeter
10:20 on either side that isn't immediately activated but the thing is that between
10:25 alex and i we've been using the surface laptop razor blade stealth many other
10:30 laptops for years and just like never
10:33 noticed it whereas on these hp's it was apparent to me within about 30 seconds i
10:39 was like something is wrong
10:42 oh it's like not working because it's a full two and a half centimeters on both
10:47 sides so
10:51 since what the software is said to out of the box does appear to be the better
10:56 solution compared to turning palm rejection off at all the spectre x360
11:01 2019 ends up with the dubious honor of
11:04 tying the MSI gs75 for
11:07 worst track pad i've seen in years something that is particularly
11:11 unacceptable on a non-gaming device where you aren't expected to regularly
11:16 plug in a mouse speaking of plugging in one area where
11:19 the x360 13-inch really shines is in the
11:23 battery life department with its 60 watt hour battery it delivers some truly
11:27 incredible time away from the wall after a full eight hour work day writing this
11:32 script with no plugging in the x360 13 inch still had 70 of its battery left
11:37 when it was time to head home as for the 15-inch model well it's no
11:42 slouch either lasting through the workday handily but it's 84 watt-hour
11:46 battery can't quite compete with the 97 watt hour one in the dell xps 15.
11:52 bottom line time then overall neither the x360 13 or 15 inch
11:58 did it for me on paper it should be a pretty clear decision to take this over
12:03 something like a surface laptop too it's got better battery life better
12:07 performance better connectivity and better security features all for a very
12:12 similar price and it does feel like hp
12:15 has spent a lot of time working on the details of this machine
12:20 kind of like there's a laptop design rubric created by a consumer study that
12:24 the engineers have made sure that they get top marks on
12:27 the only problem is that when you take a couple steps back from these things and
12:31 just use them the issues that we've talked
12:34 about especially the trackpad are really
12:37 hard to ignore all i can hope for is that this is
12:41 something that hp can fix through software updates
12:44 and redesign in 2020
12:48 yeah or that speaking of 2020 you won't have to wait
12:52 until 2020 to go to ltx 2019 featuring
