0:00 the ASUS g701 VI may be
0:04 300% as heavy and thick as the MacBook
0:07 Pro but the g701 also houses
0:13 1,300% the graphics horsepower so the
0:16 way we see it if you're going to spend three grand on a laptop it might as well
0:21 be capable of physically crushing the
0:25 other
0:28 guys

0:45 description it's not exactly hard to
0:49 tell that the g701 vi is a gaming laptop
0:53 the outside is brushed aluminum with red Lighting on the back that makes it look
0:58 mean and ready for for business no not
1:02 that kind of business gaming business
1:06 with a 17.3 in screen and a 330 W power
1:09 brick that could probably double as a bludgeoning device you don't even have
1:14 to see the specs to know it's an absolute monster the io is a solid mix
1:21 of more than you'll probably need plus a
1:24 Thunderbolt 3 Port allowing up to three external 4K displays and inter internal
1:30 highlights include a core i7 7820 HK
1:34 processor don't know what that is no problem it's a high TDP mobile chip with
1:39 support for overclocking and ASUS has cranked it up to a whopping 4.3 GHz and
1:45 in addition to that we've got an overclocked desktop class GTX 1080 that
1:50 sits at w seriously
1:54 1923 MHz from our measurements that is
1:58 faster than a a Founders Edition desktop
2:02 card what the stuff and gaming performance is what you'd expect from
2:07 this combo it destroyed everything in our test Suite yielding 120 FPS in
2:14 several modern AAA titles on ultra settings at 1080P and never scoring
2:20 below 60 FPS in anything the best part
2:24 is you'll get to see all of those frames too if you get a model like ours with
2:28 the 120z 1080p gsync panel it really
2:33 gets a chance to flex its muscles in fast-paced FPS games like Doom now you
2:39 probably won't care about how accurate the full srgb color space coverage is
2:44 while you're spinning around smashing demon heads in but I'm pleased to report
2:49 that the IPS panel does a good enough job in this regard with solid viewing
2:54 angles and adequate brightness as a bonus and at no point during our testing
3:00 did we feel like motion blur or input leg were a problem but this is the big
3:07 question about laptops and portable devices in general can it maintain that
3:14 level of performance under an extended load without resorting to Bulky or risky
3:20 water cooling strategies in short yeah
3:24 running firmar GPU stress test in extreme overclocking mode the GPU
3:29 stabilizer at 79° while maintaining a
3:32 very impressive 1923 MHz CPU cooling
3:37 didn't blow us away to quite the same degree after it fell to a measly 3.8 GHz
3:43 in ID to 64 after shooting up to 94° at
3:47 its overclocked 4.3 GHz but In fairness
3:51 we did never run into that issue in our non-synthetic tests and it topped out
3:56 under 80° C in our gaming benchmark
3:59 marks the g701 vi noise level while
4:03 gaming is what I would describe as
4:06 acceptable to its credit it avoids the
4:09 high- pitched wine of smaller gaming laptops and is basically silent relative
4:15 to the Sager np9873 when that thing is pushed to its
4:18 limit but it still definitely lets you know it's there it's kind of like a hot
4:23 air balloon parked above your neighbor's house one sore spot for me given the
4:27 price tag is that up upgrading this thing is a bit of a pain in the ARs
4:32 getting inside takes 14 screws and once
4:35 you're in there half the RAM slots are on the underside of the motherboard and
4:40 the same goes for the ssds only one of
4:43 them can be easily accessed though that
4:46 kind of thing won't come up that often so let's move on to day-to-day usability
4:51 I'm not totally sure how I feel about the keyboard for typing the short travel
4:56 distance in key spacing is fine and I
4:59 easily got up to speed but there's more Flex than I'd like especially near the
5:04 space bar and I just didn't find it that comfortable with that said the gaming
5:09 tuned feel of the key switches and the shape of the space bar the five
5:13 programmable macro keys and the keyboard back lighting bring my grade up to a b
5:20 or at least they would if it included RGB back lighting I mean this is a
5:24 gaming product for shame ASUS the
5:28 trackpad is what I would consider very usable straight out of the box it's
5:34 actually great but if your fingers get sweaty at all it turns into a bit of a
5:39 Grime magnet and it's easy for your fingers to kind of skip across it which
5:43 does hurt accuracy when you're trying to be very precise with it the odds that a
5:48 wouldbe g71 VI Shopper will have a gaming mouse hooked up to it all the
5:53 time though are pretty high I just think ASUS could have done better in this
5:58 regard speakers are decent for a laptop with fair basee and no Distortion even
6:03 at full volume although again if you're gaming you're probably going to have
6:07 headphones plugged in but fortunately ASUS has you covered there too in the
6:11 701 VI Sports an ESS sa DAC and amp
6:15 getting up near external D quality and it's nice to see this included now of
6:19 course everyone in the comments is probably saying this is stupid just buy
6:23 our gaming desktop and honestly it's no
6:27 secret that as a filthy casual grade gamer these days I run a thin and light
6:33 but let's say you did want a full fat
6:36 gaming experience that's portable have you ever carried a desktop as your
6:41 carry-on on a plane I have and it's a
6:44 massive pain and takes up all your space and weight allowances so if you
6:47 regularly move around for work or school
6:51 the g701 vi ticks all the right boxes for me as long as you have $3,500 to
6:57 blow on a laptop have you ever thought gee I'd love to build a website but it's
7:02 just too hard well Squarespace takes all
7:06 of that and throws it in a bin and lights it on fire because Squarespace is
