0:00 welcome my friends to the first installment of a new series called why
0:04 the advertiser friendly content are you buying this
0:08 where we look at the number one best-selling tech product in a given
0:12 category and try to figure out what the heck and fuss is about let's start with
0:18 the top selling tablet on amazon.com the
0:22 fire 7 is priced at a wait
0:25 really only 40 dollars good god
0:29 okay well that's probably at least part of the answer but cheap does not equal
0:34 good value so let's see just why those
0:37 at least 32 000 people are so freaking pleased with
0:43 this thing
0:53 that's quite big looking for an affordable and reliable
0:57 vpn service private internet access encrypts your internet traffic and uses
1:02 a safe protected ip subscribe today at
1:05 the link below so let's take a moment to
1:08 appreciate how ludicrous it is that amazon sells these for a mere forty
1:14 dollars regardless of the exact spec this is a
1:18 complex device that no one person could
1:22 hope to make in the one to four hours
1:25 that it would take to earn one it is a truly amazing time to be alive there is
1:30 a reason that it's cheap though spec wise the seventh generation fire seven
1:36 from 2017 is pretty comparable to a
1:39 nexus 7 tablet from 2012
1:42 but that doesn't mean that it lacks modern features outright for starters
1:47 it's got amazon's alexa assistant built
1:50 in which makes it a portable touch and voice remote for your smart home and
1:59 that's actually about it so why the best seller spot
2:04 well the main appeal of any tablet is the size and while this one screen is
2:09 only a little over an inch bigger than
2:12 some flagship phones these days it still makes a big difference
2:17 based on the reviews most people are buying one of these for casual web
2:21 browsing ebook reading and movie watching
2:25 and if you view the bargain price tag as
2:28 a key feature frankly it is what i would describe as
2:33 suitably adequate for those use cases
2:36 now if you're a seasoned technophile like me with strong opinions about
2:41 electronic specs you'll probably hate it
2:45 at least on first glance i mean you'll be watching videos in
2:49 standard definition rather than even 720p hd
2:54 the speaker is probably worse than your phone and it is singular speaker not
3:01 stereo and even reading on the thing gets fatiguing after a while because it has
3:06 the same number of pixels as an iphone 4s
3:10 but those pixels are spread over twice the area which makes for some blurry
3:16 letters however let's say that you want an interneting
3:21 machine on your next trip but you don't want to bring along one of your more
3:25 premium devices or let's say that you want a you know cheap
3:30 but surprisingly rugged tablet for the kids
3:34 or the cat the fire seven is great for that and you
3:38 can even order a kid proof case to go with it it's even cheap enough to give
3:43 as a gift to relatives who still have cabinets full of vhs tapes or i mean
3:48 heck you could even buy several of them for some much-needed peace and quiet on
3:53 a long car ride
3:56 shut up both of this is unbearable dude
4:00 hey okay no we do still have some gripes
4:05 first you need to be prepared to shell out some extra cashola for a decent
4:10 microsd card because eight gigs or even
4:14 the 16 gig version will fill up pretty darn quickly from apps alone never mind
4:19 movies second speed
4:22 isn't exactly the fire 7 strong point it performs
4:27 exactly like you'd expect from something with one quarter of the RAM of most
4:31 modern phones and a processor that was designed primarily for wearables
4:37 third while it does have both rear and front
4:41 mounted cameras um they probably should have included a
4:46 peeler in the box for them because quality wise
4:49 it's a total potato show i mean 0.3 megapixels
4:55 what is 0.3 megapixels should we even be measuring that in megapixels or
5:00 kilopixels now available with 300 kilopixels
5:07 even this bottom of the barrel hardware though doesn't fully explain why this
5:11 thing is so cheap for that we need to look at the software
5:16 unlike apple amazon isn't a hardware
5:19 company at its core so everything about this device including the
5:24 non-googlified version of Android that it's running is about driving customers
5:29 back to other amazon services that's why
5:33 your fire 7 is loaded with apps like prime video prime photos and prime music
5:40 that's why you get notifications related to your amazon orders and that's why by
5:46 default anyway you are forced to download any additional apps from the
5:52 amazon app store instead of the google
5:55 play store giving amazon the 30
5:58 commission on app sales instead of google
6:02 that is how they can afford to sell this thing for so cheap
6:07 not only are they using objectively cheap internals i mean there are a lot
6:12 of reviews complaining about fire sevens that stopped charging or
6:16 broke altogether shortly after the warranty expired but this ecosystem
6:20 control is such a powerful motivator that amazon actually subsidizes every
6:27 tablet they sell then pushes the price down another 15
6:31 dollars with the with special offers version that puts
6:36 ads on your lock screen so
6:40 should you become one of the tens maybe
6:43 even hundreds of thousands of people who own one or several fire seven tablets
6:49 it's not amazing our first unit was actually inexplicably
6:53 missing the a assistant for
6:56 some reason with amazon's response being well i don't know i guess trade it in
7:00 for another one but if you want a basic no frills or like
7:06 you know utility tablet for the coffee table
7:09 and you don't have an extra 20 spot burning a hole in your pocket for the
7:12 larger higher capacity fire hd8
