is","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":74.06,"end_s":78.38,"text":"especially important for us Apple users because not everything works for the","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":78.38,"end_s":83.42,"text":"iPhone years ago Apple created their own standard called home kit it was a have","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":115.7,"end_s":122.66,"text":"to watch out for everything else these are Wi-Fi RGB's it works with Alexa","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":122.66,"end_s":127.78,"text":"worth the Google Google Assistant gov home app no Apple yep from my experience","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":127.78,"end_s":131.5,"text":"most of the light bulbs at the store will have a Google and Alexa logo but","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":131.5,"end_s":134.94,"text":"not the home kit one and that's if you're lucky because you can find ones","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":134.94,"end_s":138.9,"text":"that don't have any logos at all newie there's not it doesn't even say it","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":138.9,"end_s":143.58,"text":"works with anything other than app control well yeah before there wasn't","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":143.58,"end_s":150.74,"text":"that didn't make a difference where there was no matter there was only app control but if there's a matter logo it should just work and that's what I'm","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":150.74,"end_s":156.02,"text":"going to do replace all of these devices and more with matter and to be fair he","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":156.02,"end_s":161.38,"text":"has some of the fundamentals in place oh oh an Apple TV this is good this is","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":161.38,"end_s":166.46,"text":"gonna be perfect for us cuz you need a thread router for matter and that's what","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":166.46,"end_s":171.86,"text":"this is this is the Ethernet one that's why I bought it I actually paid extra to get the one with Ethernet and the newest one to make sure it had this","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":171.86,"end_s":176.06,"text":"thread support this is gonna be good too because whizbulbs secretly support","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":176.06,"end_s":181.38,"text":"matter what despite no markings on the box this is a little scatterbrain and","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":181.38,"end_s":185.82,"text":"hopefully my setup will be better","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":186.1,"end_s":192.1,"text":"don't do that you didn't tell me to follow you before we get into what I","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":192.1,"end_s":196.22,"text":"bought I just want to say that finding matter devices is still quite hard here","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":196.22,"end_s":200.54,"text":"in Canada the selection is grim worse still the labeling isn't always right","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":200.54,"end_s":204.94,"text":"for instance these Phillips whizbulbs from Home Depot have no mention of","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":204.94,"end_s":209.14,"text":"matter on the product page yet they arrived with the logo and codes on the","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":209.14,"end_s":214.62,"text":"box meanwhile this GE sync bulb from Amazon shows matter support but the one","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":214.62,"end_s":218.06,"text":"they shipped didn't","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":220.1,"end_s":224.98,"text":"okay Jake this is what I was able to find that supports matter this is all the","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":224.98,"end_s":229.5,"text":"matter products that exist yeah and then I could get here in Canada so smart","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":229.5,"end_s":233.86,"text":"plug wise there was one option on Amazon which was the TP-Link CASA but","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":233.86,"end_s":239.7,"text":"they weren't available so I had to go and find these morose smart plugs or me","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":239.7,"end_s":247.3,"text":"Ross no you're Jake you have whizbulbs which is good Phillips also makes whiz","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":247.3,"end_s":252.34,"text":"bulbs okay this is not a leaf bulb supports matter but also supports thread","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":252.5,"end_s":257.1,"text":"which is a wireless protocol within matter and everyone was complaining about","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":257.1,"end_s":260.58,"text":"these on Amazon giving the bad reviews and I don't know if that's because they","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":260.58,"end_s":264.46,"text":"support thread and they just don't have the thread stuck so you had goby","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":264.46,"end_s":267.54,"text":"string lights that don't support matter now gov make string lights that support","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":267.54,"end_s":271.06,"text":"matter these are the first matter devices from them sweet here you don't know","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":271.06,"end_s":275.58,"text":"what switchbot is no never well this is kind of nifty they make a smart lock that","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":275.58,"end_s":281.46,"text":"goes in front of your existing lock hmm and they make a motorized blind tilt","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":281.94,"end_s":285.62,"text":"that'll be perfect that's powered by a solar panel but the thing is none of","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":285.62,"end_s":288.94,"text":"these individually support matter to get it to support matter you still have to","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":288.94,"end_s":294.54,"text":"get their hub oh okay and the annoying thing is with matter even if you have","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":294.54,"end_s":303.78,"text":"like a Phillips hue that supports matter you still need to use your Phillips hue hub so it's hubs upon hubs hub on my right oh yeah Eve we got these motion","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":303.78,"end_s":310.82,"text":"sensors you talked about wanting those even though this says it supports apple home kit it does support matter but you have to convert it to matter and then you","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":310.82,"end_s":314.82,"text":"can never bring it back to home kit ever again I hope I like matter okay so","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":314.82,"end_s":320.42,"text":"what about this well you asked for a smart display so I got you this it does","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":320.42,"end_s":326.1,"text":"it support matter it does and thread oh perfect what do you think of the set I","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":326.1,"end_s":336.42,"text":"I hope it works me too let's let's try getting it set up okay here we go this","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":336.46,"end_s":343.66,"text":"should be easier to set up because we have the QR codes you ready do you want","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":343.66,"end_s":349.5,"text":"to do the honors or yeah this is the real benefit of matter a simple setup all","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":349.5,"end_s":358.02,"text":"you have to do is open up the app that you want to control your smart home in our case apple home and scan the code it is that easy but there are things to","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":358.02,"end_s":364.7,"text":"watch out for so all of the Wi-Fi controlled whiz bulbs work on 2.4","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":364.7,"end_s":368.14,"text":"gigahertz networks and so if you set them up you have to be on the 2.4 gigs","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":368.14,"end_s":373.46,"text":"network and your matter hub has to also be on that network so we'll see how this","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":373.46,"end_s":380.58,"text":"works I'm done what do you mean you're done I'm done what I'm done oh excited","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":402.1,"end_s":406.22,"text":"this is great this is great I'm liking it so far okay so let's try the bedroom","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":406.22,"end_s":414.9,"text":"ones which you already have set up in your whiz app yeah we'll have to do the whiz thing right all right so I clicked on the matter button I'm telling you how","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":414.9,"end_s":417.98,"text":"to do things you're trying to be a little smart Alec like you know everything I","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":418.02,"end_s":422.34,"text":"do while the Phillips whiz bulbs we bought have the QR codes the whiz","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":422.34,"end_s":426.5,"text":"branded ones don't this feels wrong because it means that you have to first","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":426.5,"end_s":430.22,"text":"connect the bulbs to the whiz app before you can put it into a special pairing","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":430.22,"end_s":435.3,"text":"mode and get the code from there there's no add to home button okay just copy the","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":435.3,"end_s":443.38,"text":"number oh no you have to hit start set up because you get 15 minutes oh okay okay","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":443.38,"end_s":452.5,"text":"now you can go to the home wow it literally is a 15 minute timer that's crazy I don't understand why they do this the next issue is just how long it","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":452.5,"end_s":459.94,"text":"takes to connect there's a lot of sitting around and waiting and if something","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":459.94,"end_s":465.66,"text":"goes wrong you have to start the whole process over again and if it doesn't","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":465.66,"end_s":474.26,"text":"work then well then you're in a troubleshooting hole it didn't connect it","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":474.26,"end_s":477.38,"text":"actually failed so I'm trying again but it's still saying connecting not","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":477.38,"end_s":482.94,"text":"setting up so that's not a good sign one of the weird things on it is it says IPv6","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":482.94,"end_s":487.5,"text":"network required do you know what that is Wi-Fi 6 no I didn't know what it switch","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":509.38,"end_s":516.26,"text":"routers in like a week we should probably set it up on this one hey you know","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":516.26,"end_s":520.5,"text":"what that means because if the network is named let's just name it the same","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":520.5,"end_s":524.54,"text":"thing so you're gonna have a ubiquity router named D-Link blah blah blah have to have apps for everything it doesn't just all show up in the home app on my iPhone and it is such a pain by the way this emergency line such a great idea I'm gonna call it all the time you never listen to me at the office oh and it'll be so cool you know I'm right here it's 2024 there has to be an easier way to make this all work together there is this is the problem with the smart home especially for Apple users and it's why I barged into Jake's house because there's a fix do you have an outlet for it probably over a year ago a brand new smart home standard was released called matter it's a protocol that enables supported smart home devices to talk to any supported smart home apps I'm eager to try it and Jake is the perfect candidate so this is what you got a yeah you know it doesn't look like a lot but it packs a punch no it doesn't these tech ins does this support matter or home kit well likely not no I got them from Amazon matter is especially important for us Apple users because not everything works for the iPhone years ago Apple created their own standard called home kit it was a big mess with hardware encryption requirements that no one wanted to participate in they've loosened things up since then but even today home kit requires MFI certification and there are a limited number of devices that support it oh home kit that's pretty good yeah the only problem with that is I bought it from Nicole at the office and it's linked to her house so I can actually put it in my home kit and I've been too shy to ask her to remove it despite Jake's situation I find home kit devices work quite well but you have to watch out for everything else these are Wi-Fi RGB's it works with Alexa worth the Google Google Assistant gov home app no Apple yep from my experience most of the light bulbs at the store will have a Google and Alexa logo but not the home kit one and that's if you're lucky because you can find ones that don't have any logos at all newie there's not it doesn't even say it works with anything other than app control well yeah before there wasn't that didn't make a difference where there was no matter there was only app control but if there's a matter logo it should just work and that's what I'm going to do replace all of these devices and more with matter and to be fair he has some of the fundamentals in place oh oh an Apple TV this is good this is gonna be perfect for us cuz you need a thread router for matter and that's what this is this is the Ethernet one that's why I bought it I actually paid extra to get the one with Ethernet and the newest one to make sure it had this thread support this is gonna be good too because whizbulbs secretly support matter what despite no markings on the box this is a little scatterbrain and hopefully my setup will be better don't do that you didn't tell me to follow you before we get into what I bought I just want to say that finding matter devices is still quite hard here in Canada the selection is grim worse still the labeling isn't always right for instance these Phillips whizbulbs from Home Depot have no mention of matter on the product page yet they arrived with the logo and codes on the box meanwhile this GE sync bulb from Amazon shows matter support but the one they shipped didn't okay Jake this is what I was able to find that supports matter this is all the matter products that exist yeah and then I could get here in Canada so smart plug wise there was one option on Amazon which was the TP-Link CASA but they weren't available so I had to go and find these morose smart plugs or me Ross no you're Jake you have whizbulbs which is good Phillips also makes whiz bulbs okay this is not a leaf bulb supports matter but also supports thread which is a wireless protocol within matter and everyone was complaining about these on Amazon giving the bad reviews and I don't know if that's because they support thread and they just don't have the thread stuck so you had goby string lights that don't support matter now gov make string lights that support matter these are the first matter devices from them sweet here you don't know what switchbot is no never well this is kind of nifty they make a smart lock that goes in front of your existing lock hmm and they make a motorized blind tilt that'll be perfect that's powered by a solar panel but the thing is none of these individually support matter to get it to support matter you still have to get their hub oh okay and the annoying thing is with matter even if you have like a Phillips hue that supports matter you still need to use your Phillips hue hub so it's hubs upon hubs hub on my right oh yeah Eve we got these motion sensors you talked about wanting those even though this says it supports apple home kit it does support matter but you have to convert it to matter and then you can never bring it back to home kit ever again I hope I like matter okay so what about this well you asked for a smart display so I got you this it does it support matter it does and thread oh perfect what do you think of the set I I hope it works me too let's let's try getting it set up okay here we go this should be easier to set up because we have the QR codes you ready do you want to do the honors or yeah this is the real benefit of matter a simple setup all you have to do is open up the app that you want to control your smart home in our case apple home and scan the code it is that easy but there are things to watch out for so all of the Wi-Fi controlled whiz bulbs work on 2.4 gigahertz networks and so if you set them up you have to be on the 2.4 gigs network and your matter hub has to also be on that network so we'll see how this works I'm done what do you mean you're done I'm done what I'm done oh it's working it's working I already named it and everything when I arrive turn on when I leave turn off this is working better than when I was trying to done lounge bam bam colors wow that is thinking of purple oh there we go I'm really excited this is great this is great I'm liking it so far okay so let's try the bedroom ones which you already have set up in your whiz app yeah we'll have to do the whiz thing right all right so I clicked on the matter button I'm telling you how to do things you're trying to be a little smart Alec like you know everything I do while the Phillips whiz bulbs we bought have the QR codes the whiz branded ones don't this feels wrong because it means that you have to first connect the bulbs to the whiz app before you can put it into a special pairing mode and get the code from there there's no add to home button okay just copy the number oh no you have to hit start set up because you get 15 minutes oh okay okay now you can go to the home wow it literally is a 15 minute timer that's crazy I don't understand why they do this the next issue is just how long it takes to connect there's a lot of sitting around and waiting and if something goes wrong you have to start the whole process over again and if it doesn't work then well then you're in a troubleshooting hole it didn't connect it actually failed so I'm trying again but it's still saying connecting not setting up so that's not a good sign one of the weird things on it is it says IPv6 network required do you know what that is Wi-Fi 6 no I didn't know what it was either but essentially it's a different form of IP address it's a newer one and you have to make sure that's turned on on your router well I do have some good news I have some of the stuff from my upcoming AMD upgrade including a new ubiquity Wi-Fi 7 router can I just go in the Wi-Fi config of your or the route config of your regular router you have right now well if I'm gonna switch routers in like a week we should probably set it up on this one hey you know what that means because if the network is named let's just name it the same thing so you're gonna have a ubiquity router named D-Link blah blah blah John that I told you I switch your routers we should have done this differently this turned out to be a much bigger problem IPv6 is the bane of network administrators everywhere because it's so confusing so how is a normal person supposed to figure this out for instance full IPv6 support actually requires your internet service provider to be on board and unfortunately for us Bell's doesn't support it you'll have to double check your router to I managed to find the setting for Bell's D-Link router but the fancy-pants ubiquity was not as obvious at first glance is that it's like a search function oh my god they really pay wall to this support thread just return it all I'll go back to different apps I'm good thank you so much for watching make sure it's going to back address leave a comment on what mattered products you have at your house and what I should do for my house no I'm not gonna give up because when the LTT team went back for Jake's AMD upgrade I snuck in and worked on getting his house set up come hell or high water it turns out that setting the IPv6 to local connections only without the whole ISP setup brings matter to life and we found the IPv6 checkbox hidden in the Ubiquity config web page so I was actually having success getting everything connected but by God was it a pain in the neck it took the better part of the whole day but when it was done it all worked you know when it works it truly is magical like walking into my house the lights are on leaving the house and I'm to worry about it really is cool doesn't work all the time no but when it does it is exactly what I want it gonna have guests come over and be like wow the nano leaf light every single time worked flawlessly absolutely flawlessly the gov stuff worked really well but I think that clearly requires a lot of effort from brands and brands don't have a reason to do that right now it is cool having most everything in the home app there was even times where I found the home app was more helpful than the apps for the dedicated product so I deleted all the apps for dedicated products the only problem is that not all the features from those apps are in the home app so for my lock for example I can set auto unlock and lock when I leave the home but I can't change how fast the door auto locks after it's been opened so right now it's 10 seconds so by the time home detects that I'm near my apartment it unlocks the doors and then relocks by the time I get there so I have to tell Siri to unlock the door so my bathroom setup has an eve motion sensor and light sensor and then I have three whiz bulbs above my mirror for the lights in the room so that when I walk in it turns on automatically and I also have it set so if it's between like 11 and 5 a.m. the lights only turn on to 10% brightness so you don't blind yourself go into the bathroom but if you're not constantly moving the lights turn off some things almost never work my fairy lights with the smart plug the morrow smart plug don't work like at all but I had a bunch of issues setting up the Google side of matter put it in pairing mode in the home app go into the Google app and accept the pairing pretty much it failed every time I tried it I think that even though it was long and arduous to get everything set up I don't know how much more time it would have saved to not have been matter I feel like it's just smart home stuff in general kind of just is a pain to set up thanks for switching on this Mac Address I'm curious what sort of experiences you've had with your smart home and if matter is helped and what sort of setup you have you can comment below and if you want to watch another video that's connectivity related you can see the one where I talk about the history of Wi-Fi and how instrumental Apple was to it"}
