Like seriously, the marketing of this should be criminal. Check this out. Check this out. Okay. Fruit Sations. I actually recently read a book called Salt, Sugar, Fat. How the food industry giants hooked us or something along those lines. If you, if you search for a sugar, salt, fat, you'll, you'll come up with the right things. It's, it's those three things. I just forget the order, but it goes through like a whole bunch of like how marketing of like ultra processed foods and, and convenience snack foods and stuff tries to like bamboozle you. So first of all, this is huge plus veggie. This is like, and when I say huge, I don't mean important like to this product. I mean, it's utterly irrelevant to the actual nutritional value of this product. It's just huge physically on the package. Everyone knows vegetables are nutritious, right? Okay. So they throw this carrot on here, but what they don't tell you, right? Is that carrots are actually a super sweet vegetable. Like there's a lot of sugar in carrots. What else we got here? Oh, pears and apple. You know what pears and apples have in common? They can be used to make sugar, essentially. Like I think it's, is it pectin that's made of pears or no, no pectin is one of the ingredients that my dad used to have a jam business. I don't think I've ever talked about that. What is pectin made of? Oh, no, it is. Uh, so most commonly from the peels of citrus fruits and from apple pumice. Um, I think it can also be made of pears. Can pectin be made of pears? Okay, cool. I didn't, I did know what I was talking about. Okay, right. So what these two fruits have in common is they can be used to make literal sugar, literal sweetener. Um, like my dad used to make, uh, like my dad used to use as a sweetener for his jam business. So we've got like the sweetest of vegetables and then we've got literal sugar fruit. Okay. Fruit is another one. This was like a huge innovation in junk food marketing. And I think it was the nineties. It was either the eighties or the nineties. It was pretty early on basically my entire life fruit has been just kind of tacked on to junk food in order to basically make moms feel less guilty about giving it to their kids. Um, as long as they like don't look too closely at it. Look at this. So we've got veggie, fruit, pictures of fruit, assorted fruit. And then hold on a second. Naturally flavored. That's even smaller. Fruit flavored snacks. Flavored. Flavored. Look how much fruit and veggie is on here before we finally get to fruit flavored also. Oh, look at this. Just 80 calories per 23 grand per 23 grand. All that tells me is that it's not loaded with that. Right. Cause that is super calorie heavy. Sugar is pretty calorie heavy too. But this is not, you don't have context for this number. If you're just the average person are also 80 calories is a lot for a little like little tiny pack of little tiny gummies. Okay. No artificial colors. It's like, okay. You know what? I don't even mind that. I don't object to that. Gelatin free gluten free. What the f**k would have gluten in it in a fruit snack? Okay. Next you're going to tell me that it's like. It's like the AI equivalent. Yeah. Frickin. Uh, what was the, what was that stupid, uh, diet with the no, with the no gluten? You, you wouldn't know anything. Um, I don't know gluten diet or. Yeah. The one where people were buying like carb free bread and stuff. Is it gluten free? Atkins. Yeah. Atkins friendly. Like you might as well put that on here. Okay. So now let's actually, uh, I, at various points, there's been talk of legislation to move this to the front of the package, but no one's had the stones to actually move forward with it. But this is, this is way more important. Okay. So we know that that 80 calories is for just one of these tiny little pouches. Look at, look at this tiny pouch. Okay. Seriously. Go on a treadmill. Okay. Go on a treadmill. No, I'm, it's, this is not a personal attack. I just mean like for your own personal curiosity, go on a treadmill and run until it says you've burned 80 calories. That is, this is insane. Yeah. So small. This is like, this is like nothing. It's like one bite. Okay. I have 23 grams. 19 of them are carbohydrates of which 10 of them are sugar, pure sugar. I just had 10% of my sugar intake for the day. 10? Mm-hmm. What the? Also, this percent daily value is like kind of a guess, right? You might not need that much sugar in a day. Well, it's all stuck in my braces. So that was 10% of my sugar. And you might think, well, that's okay. Cause like, I'm not going to eat 10 packs of these. Like that would feel, that would feel kind of ridiculous. But you probably don't realize how much sugar is in basically everything that you eat, especially if you eat out at restaurants or if you're like eating prepackaged foods. Like even things that taste salty or savory, a lot of the time they'll have a ton of sugar in them just to increase their appeal. So you can get all the sugar that you realistically need for the day, like in a single serving of salad with like too much dressing on it. Like seriously, you'd be amazed how much sugar is in stuff. Or like, we have a couple cans of soda pop. What did Elijah come down here for? He came down here for a Red Bull? Yeah. There's a sugar-free one though. Okay, I don't even think Red Bull's that bad as far as sugar goes. No, Red Bull's bad. No, yeah. This one's bad. Yeah, this one's bad. So this is the actual sugar one. So you have one of these. Boom. There's a quarter of it. So you pop one of these packs. Let's say you treat yourself. Say you have two. Grab one of these. That's half your sugar for the day. That's nuts. And obviously like nobody is following those rules. What else we got here? This is a fun one. So like throwing vitamins into stuff. I'm actually surprised that they didn't lean heavier into that in the front of box marketing. Because like cereal, the breakfast cereal industry was like huge into promoting like, contains this many essential nutrients. Don't mind any of the like other stuff that's in here. Don't worry about that. Like seriously, at the peak there were breakfast cereals that had like well over 50% sugar. Like by volume, by mass I think. I think it's by mass. Oh yeah, it would have to be by mass. It's cramps. Oh yeah, here you go. Sugars. Corn syrup. Yeah, I didn't see corn on there, but whatever. Sugar. I'm not even pretending. Pear juice. Nah, nah, nah, nah. Which is just sugar. Apple juice. Which is just sugar. Modified corn starch. Carrot juice concentrate. Oh yeah, there it is. There's your other sugar. Ging, ging, ging. Citric acid. So basically out of the first one, two, three, four, five, six ingredients. Five of them are sugar. And pectin's still on here. There's another sugar. There's six sugars. Black carrot. Radish and sweet potato juice concentrate. Oh, that's for color. Okay, okay. These are colors. These are colors. Is Luke still not here? Because that's stalled for as long as I think they can. This is 14 minutes of lines writing about the snack industry. They're delicious though. All this is all this for 14 minutes of bad, bad, bad. But it's good, so it's okay. But that's the whole thing, right? That's the whole scam is they just make the most delicious thing. One of the coolest things that I learned, I guess from Salt and Sugar Fat was the way that they engineer these foods is to target what they call the bliss point. And that is the like peak satisfaction. And they would take kids and they would put them in a lab and they would put like a whole bunch of different formulations of Oreo cookie, for instance, in front of them, and then a palate cleanser and they would just have them try it and monitor their response to it. And then they would basically go, okay, and have them try each one. And then they would find which one lights up the pleasure center of their brain the most. And that's it. That's the bliss point. It's a combination of taste, texture, mouth feel. I thought you were going to say like the ignorance point between how much you need to provide before a mother feels comfortable buying that snack. No, no, no. This is just peer. The bliss point is all about taste and appearance. Appearance is big too. Yeah. We're going to look for Luke before you win that rant. Oh yeah. I was like, I don't know why you're coming back. Look, I often forget where I'm going. I know. I just didn't want to say that. Oh. Oh my God. Oh, I love these. Don't ruin them for me. And just because something's not loaded up with sugar does not mean it's good for you. No, these are my favorite ones. Hot rods are quite literally half fat. Oh yeah. So think about that. Think about that for a second. That is basically like taking this hot rod, slicing it down the middle, eating half of something even maybe useful and literally a stick of butter like this, just going, oh no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't waste butter. You're ruining this for me. Stop. You're ruining it for me. I love hot rods. No. I know it's bad for you. I know it's fat, but don't say it's butter. 16% of your salt intake. That's a fun one. Oh yeah. The sodium intake is pretty good. It's fat. We like naturally because, you know, for years and years and thousands, tens, hundreds of thousands of years, they were hard to come by. They were a lot of work to get. Like you had to like hunt and stuff in order to get them. And they're super calorie dense. So they give us energy. So our body is designed to go, oh, you found the right thing. You like that. Go get more of it. That'll keep your body fueled. Right. But salt's a funny one. So they did this experiment with a salt group of very, very, very young children, babies, who are just like eating whatever their parents eat. And then a control group that ate only like infant food that had no salt added. And they, after a while, they brought them all back and they did some taste testing. And the kids who just ate whatever their parents ate, they loved salt. They would like lick salt off of stuff. You know, like people are apt to do. Anyone ever lick the potato chip just to get that sweet, delicious salt? No. Really? Did you bow? No. You've never licked a potato chip? I usually chew them. Okay. How about lick your fingers after you've eaten a bunch of potato chips? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Okay. So that's what I'm talking about. That like, oh, it's like, it's so salty. It's so good. You know, like Dorito, licking Dorito dust off of your fingers, right? Yeah. So those kids would do that. The other ones, like straight up didn't like it. They like, like hated it. So salt is not a natural thing for us to like. It's something that we've been conditioned to like. Oh really? So salt does a lot more for food than just alter the taste. Apparently it's a big part of what makes pastries like fluffier. It helps to preserve it. So it gives it a longer shelf life. Because it has all these benefits in the, in the production, transport and storage of food. And so we've been kind of conditioned to really enjoy it. The good thing about it is that unlike sugar and fat, which we naturally like and we, and we just want, we just like crave at a biological level. Salt we can wean ourselves off of and we can get back to the point where we don't actually like it as much and we don't crave it as much because a little bit is good. We actually do need salt. But too much is not great. It's linked to all kinds of health complications. So yeah, hot rods. But hey, you got four grams of protein, one quarter protein. So one quarter useful, one quarter filler, one quarter basically like ingesting butter. I've seen other people popping the hot rods. Popping. Little fat will build up. Yeah. Make little bubbles like a pimple. You can squeeze and it squirts out like a pimple because I don't know that is white, clear kind of. Yeah. It's gross. Yeah, buddy.
