We were originally going to do a full LTT video on this, but because of QC issues and just things out of control, it fell through; and it took a year to get this video back up and running. The video was out of date and a lot of things changed. The process resulting in a shorter video we shot, showcasing the LTT's transparent screwdriver. I think it's available now. Kyle: And we're here. Kyle: We're at PH Molds, our injection molder in British Columbia. This is the result of a two and a half year journey of trying to make a transparent screwdriver, using molds not designed for a transparent plastic. Alex: It's very cool. Kyle: It also took a very long time. Alex: Why not just make new molds? Kyle: Linus, I don't think Terren will allow me to spend another $250, 000 making new molds. Kyle: That's probably one reason. Alex: How many hours of engineering time do you think we're spent making it work with the other molds? Do you think it works out...? Kyle: It's still in our favor. Kyle: The resulting mold modifications really only cost us like under $10, 000. Alex: Oh, okay. Kyle: So, and the amount of time that I spend on it is time that Linus would have to pay me for anyway, so it's like, this is fine. Alex: Yeah. Kyle: Hahahahahaha. Alex: That's one way to look at it. Kyle: It's a tax write-off; You should read the write-off piece. Kyle: Story time; this is our end cap. It's a separate piece that we can obviously change the color of, so some of our colorways use a different end cap and a different accent ring. But in essence, this is what's on the bottom of the screwdriver. As I explained previously in the video, the easiest way to injection mold something is to have a cavity inside two halves of a mold. You squirt plastic in, the mold moves apart, and out pops your part. This is not one of those molds. This mold is a little bit more complicated. I am going to draw a black line, and this is where the two halves of the mold meet. This entire shaded area is in one side of the mold, and this is in the other side. This whole part moves back to hit the ejector plate. The ejector actually sits over here and pushes on the part to pop it off. The issue is we have a bump that sits right there. The problem is when you eject you're hoping that it pops off that bump. The problem is we have a section of the part retained by the mold. Alex: So why wasn't that a problem in the past? Because before, we still had this bump; it wasn't an issue, it would just pop off. Kyle: Well yeah, so it doesn't pop off, it kind of shears off. It like, it like, you're kind of forcing it. Kyle: With Triax, we got away with it. It's a more malleable plastic. So it, it kind of gave a little bit and allowed the part to eject without mangling the part. Tritan is way stiffer. The issue is with the stiffer material you don't really get that give. So what ended up happening is it just like either sheared the bump off or even worse, just got stuck in the mold; and you literally had to like you know, like pop her off with like, you know some pliers and sh**, you know? It wasn't an easy task. What we did was, what I consider really cool. We made a two-stage ejection. Part of the part ejects a little bit of the way to clear it from any restraint. And then we do a final eject. Alex: Ookay. Kyle: It's like if you've ever seen a two stage rocket, right? Kyle: Part of it pops off and then the other one you know, goes to Narnia, right? Kyle: That's what we kind of did; part of the part comes out, then you, then you pop it off. Alex: It's only shot once though, right? Kyle: There's only one ejection cycle, yes; but there's one injection cycle, but a two-stage ejection. Alex: Okay. Kyle: So the part is popped out in two stages. Alex: Alright, and that's what makes it so that this area here doesn't become part of the mold assembly. Kyle: Yeah; so like I said if this is retained and you're trying to pop there's no space for the part to move. Alex: Yeah. Kyle: So you're putting a lot of pressure on the bump off that we need to snap onto the tube for the screwdriver to work. Kyle: You're putting a lot of pressure on that. Kyle: So you do one of two things; you either shear the bump off completely, which is bad because you don't want it. Or you just leave the part on the mold and it gets stuck, because it's stiff as crap. Alex: So why does two stages stop it from staying there still? Kyle: Because you now are no longer holding the outside of the part rigid, it's now free and the whole outside can stretch. Alex: Oh, okay. Kyle: So it can stretch a little bit enough to pop it off. Kyle: It still pops off with a- Like a decent amount of force, but it pops off. Alex: Yeah, you can definitely tell that it pops off with a decent amount of force. Alex: You can see one up there. Alex: There's one over there; they're just flying around. Kyle: As I was explaining earlier in the video, sections of the mold; this part of the mold that's attached to the machine, we call the hot side. That's where the plastic actually comes in. Alex: It's coming in right through there. Alex: Wow, this is kind of hot still. Kyle: Yes, because it just came out of the machine. Kyle: Injection mold nomenclature, we call this the sprue because it goes down; and then runners that go sideways. Important to note, all of our molds are what we call cold runners; which means they have a sprue and runners that go into the part. Rather than having the injection point be right on the part. If you do that it requires like a different, like head with a valve to like control plastic. It produces a little bit less waste because you're injecting straight into the part, but it's adding complexity. But we tend to regrind as much of this as we can and reuse to save wastage. Kyle: But I digress. Kyle: Sprue, runners; and this is our gate; so we have what we call a banana gate or submarine gate. It goes underneath the mold into the part; so when you eject, it breaks away. Alex: That's where it will be hanging out. Kyle: Yes. Kyle: If you see the mold, you can see where it would go right? Kyle: So this is a four cavity mold; so each one of these are four identical parts. Because this feature makes the outside of the part, we call this the cavity. Notice that we also have these little bumps, right? That help you grip the part when you're opening the screwdriver. As I mentioned earlier in the video, undercuts. Undercuts are usually a very no- Like a big no-no for plastic parts because you can't eject properly; that's why we paid extra money for these things. These are called slides. Now what those slides do is when the part is finished ejecting they move away as the mold moves back. Kyle: Right? So they move out the way so you don't have that undercut. What we have here is the end of a shot just before ejection happens; so we stopped the machine just before the ejector plate hits the rod, and you can see the finished parts. These parts have now gone through their full ejection cycle and all that needs to happen is they haven't been pushed away from the mold. The slides have already moved away so the parts are free to be pushed out; but they still have this part over here stuck inside the mold. A certain section of the part is still in the mold and that was the problem. What we're going to try and do right now is highlight how that two-stage ejection actually works, and how it enabled us by doing one very minor change, create a part that actually works. Sammy: But what does a scrapped Floatplane exclusive look like? When I first started as a social media person, I did a lot of game shows, and I thought doing a speech jammer would be pretty interesting.
