My name is Elijah, I'm a junior writer. I've been in the writing department for about nine months, eight and a half months now, depending on if you count the concussion or not, but- Sammy: When did you first apply for this role? Elijah: For the writing position, I first applied back in 2021? Elijah: I did not get hired because of this script; that's going to be the best part about this. Elijah: I sent this script in, James never replied. Elijah: So then I got hired in logistics, and then moved over. Elijah and Sammy: *Laughs* Sammy: And how much writing did you do prior to this script? Elijah: Oh, zero; I actually failed English. The only reason I graduated high school was because the teachers went on strike. Mandatory pass everyone, I was getting 32% in English 12. So even you can get a job here. Sammy: What was your tech savvy level then? Elijah: It was definitely higher than my writing ability; I was always building computers. At the time I sent this in, I was actually working at a tech shop. I was building computers for clients and troubleshooting printers. Just kind of the whole nine yards. Sammy: And did you know who Linus Tech Tips was then? Elijah: Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah; I've been watching Linus Tech Tips since NCIX, since I was in middle school; Sammy: That's a long ass time. Elijah: which is like wild to think about, that I was in middle school; and I've told Linus that and he's like, god damn it I'm old. Elijah: He says that every time. Sammy: Which prompt did you choose? Elijah: I chose to do my own, I think that was one of the options? Sammy: So this is 2021 Eli. Elijah: When you asked me to find this script, I booted it back up and immediately found spelling mistake in like the first sentence. Sammy: Hahahaha. Elijah: And I'm like- Let's face it, We have all dreamed about owning the latest and greatest computer. Oh my god, I'm already stuttering because the flow is so bad. Just so we can brag about it to our friends about how fast and perfect it is, even if your gaming skills aren't. I feel like that first line is okay. Elijah: But when is the perfect time to upgrade? Seven years? Three years? How about one? That's what I did going from an RTX 2080 Ti to a 3080 Ti in just over one year. Was it worth it? I know it's worth checking out our sponsor. Elijah: because I think if I actually went into a script review, with this paragraph to Linus, he would read the first three words and then he'd be like, go away. Start over. That 100% is something that I didn't practice when I wrote the script, it's just reading it out loud. It's something I do my best. Even if I'm at my desk, I just try to pretend I'm reading out loud, because I'm in an office; I don't want to actually disturb people. You can actually see every writer does this now. They're just sitting at their desk; Alex beside me all the time is just miming with his hands. And written word versus spoken word is truly different. I think the intro gets a good length, but I don't think I gave the correct information and the kind of same golden rules we have now. It's actually not on this version of the script because it's so old. But the fourth one is the show, more you need to know. Ew, I sound like such a posh b**** with this next paragraph. I've been fortunate and been able... Oh, that grammar. And been able to have almost the latest and greatest NVIDIA graphics card for the past six years, starting with the GTX 980, which I received in 2015. After that, I had a 1080 Ti when they launched, followed by the 2080 Ti at the beginning of 2020. So trying to give a little bit of backstory of how I've been fortunate, which is good; that's part of the whole make it personable kind of rule. Now, just a year and a half later, I upgraded to a 3080 Ti. Was it worth it? Okay, I can already hear Linus in script review saying, you just asked the same question twice, you just gave an intro twice. I just gave an intro, we did our sponsors, and I literally just gave another intro. Wasted your time, so that's horrible. That's what I wanted to know, so I went back and plugged in my old 2080 Ti to see just how much of a difference there was in games between them. Because I still had my 2080 Ti, it was just sitting in a box in the closet. But first, let's talk about the actual spec of each card and see the major differences between them... Between them are. \"And see the major differences between them are\". Oh, my god! Grammars. Elijah: I'm probably not showing it as much on camera. This is really hard for me to read, and it's very cringy looking back at it. And I know why James didn't hire me based on this script. I remember having a conversation with James about this, when he actually asked me to join the writing department again, in about August, just after LTX; and one of the things he said was he actually went back and found this script, and gave it a quick read. And he said, you were on the right track, but I can tell you've never written before. And so he said, and I quote, \"I'll just beat that out of you\". Clearly just talking about practice and repetition will make you better at writing. And I think it has, I think my script reviews now are a little bit better? I'm still a junior, so that's my excuse. Elijah: On paper, the 3080 Ti blows the 2080 Ti out of the water with the CUDA Core count; going from about 4, 300 to over 10, 000. Oh, that is the worst numbers to compare. You want to compare the same numbers; so I should have said, from about \"4, 300 to over 10, 000\" instead of doing \"4, 300 to 10, 000\". from about \"4, 300 to over 10, 000\" instead of doing \"4, 300 to 10, 000\". It's just like a little bit of wording, but it helps with the flow and people keeping track. With other specs also improving, such as one more Gigabyte of GDDR6 memory, PCIe Gen 4, and even higher boost clock on both the memory and the card itself. I probably wouldn't put it in a script now; I'd probably just have like a mogart side by side on screen. Eh, I don't think it was necessarily bad. So does this performance translate to better gaming experience? To find out, I ran both cards on a test bench, which included a Ryzen 3900X, 32 gigabytes of 3200 megahertz. That's bad, we do mega transfers now; I should have known better. ...memory and a Crosshair Hero 8 motherboard. Say that 10 times fast. To be honest, I really didn't expect as much of a performance improvement as we ended up getting. As you can see by our first benchmark being Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p ultra settings, we can see a 46% increase in our average frames. The same continues to our next two games, which is a crazy... with a cra- Spelling mistake. Sammy: Hahahahaha. Elijah: Nooo! Sammy: You're hired here. They can't, they can't, they can't un-hire you. Sammy: Oh! Well I mean they can, it's called firing. Elijah: With a cray 42% buff on the 3080 Ti in Forza Horizon 4, and again another 35% gain in Borderlands 3. We also tested FurMark, that glorious fuzzy donut, to see- Oh, it's so cringe. To see our average FPS in that benchmark. The story continues with another 47% performance increase over 3080 Ti. Sammy: First part is uh- What is your mind state while you're writing the script? Did you have a mind state? Elijah: I didn't. I don't think I- Okay, so I think the reason I ended up choosing doing your own was because the other two options that James gave me at the time, I probably wasn't confident in; which is why I went with this one. But even this one, I was flying by the seat of my pants. I was really just like, I think I watched a couple of the GPU review videos we've done in the past? And so I tried to make sure I hit certain beats of talking about specs, talking about price, which I think I get into later; and then talking about the actual gain over last generation. So I honestly tried to frame this as more of a GPU review, instead of like a, was it worth the upgrade? It's honestly just spec jarble that I'm like throwing at your face right now, in this script; and sometimes those videos can be really daunting and actually make people turn off the video. Do you think this is interesting? Like from beginning to where you are now Would you have clicked off at some point here? Elijah: You know what? Not as it's written, but I think the concept of asking when you should upgrade your PC, is very enticing to a lot of people. We see so many comments on YouTube videos, on the forum, on Twitter, whatever it may be, “oh, well, should I get this?” What should I do next? The ultimate answer is, it's whatever you can either A, afford or whatever you want. No \"so\". You're not allowed saying \"so\" on set. So it's safe to say if you have a 2080 Ti, you should just go ahead and upgrade, right? Well, I think it's more complicated than that. If you purchased the 2080 Ti at MSRP back when it came out, you would have spent roughly around a 1000 American. Elijah: Okay, I think in my head, this is again, goes back to the written versus spoken. I put the dollar sign in front of 1000; so subconsciously, when you read it, you read it as 1000 bucks American, so subconsciously, when you read it, you read it as 1000 bucks American, however you wanna interpret it. But when you're speaking it on a teleprompter, all you would really see is the number 1000, American; and so you would probably read it out like I just did there. Instead, I would probably write \"1000 USD\", or \"1000 American dollars\", or \"freedom bucks\", whatever. The 3080 Ti was 1200 dollars at launch. See, I wrote dollars there, damn it. Sammy: Hahahaha. Elijah: So- I wrote another \"so\"! Ugh! So it is 20% more expensive. But if you're gaining more than 20% average FPS, it must be worth it. But then- Oh my god, I'm bouncing back and forth. But then again, you just spent $1, 000 on a GPU to spend another $1, 200 on a 20% upgrade. So that's $2, 200 in a year and a half. That's more than most people's entire PC. Damn, humble flex there. That's more than if you bought one of every item on LTTStore.com. Once again, I ask, was it worth it? Elijah: Oh god! That sentence was horrible But spending over a thousand dollars for a 20% to 35% upgrade, depending on the title, that's way different than if you were going from my first GPU, a 980, and spending $1,200 to get almost a 300% upgrade, according to GPUbenchmark.com. Don't use that website. Elijah: Again, more numbers, man. Man, I'm throwing a lot of jargon at your face. This is really cringe for me to read, I'm struggling here. So why did I do it? god damn it, another question! Why would I spend so much just to only get little performance upgrade? The main reason I did it was because of the microchip shortage... I just wanted one. We're all aware of the shortage and scalper crisis that's going on. This was during, again, pretty much the peak of the GPU shortage. I know articles are saying microchip shortage will be ending and we could have a chip oversupply by 2023. Okay, so I was trying to cite some articles; not bad. Sammy: Sorry I was going to mention, there's 11 question marks in this script. Sammy: Hahahahahaha. Elijah: It's amazing I got a job here at all I don't believe it; don't get me wrong, I wanted it to end as much as the next gamer or manufacturer, but I worry that this shortage will continue for much longer than people are letting on. So... I wanted to upgrade and get the latest while I could, because I was fortunate to get it at MSRP. Sammy: There's 24 uses of so. Elijah: So in conclusion. Sammy: Hahahahaha! Elijah: No, I don't think the upgrade was worth it in terms of a performance upgrade, but I do think it's worth it in the long run, because who knows if I would ever be able to get a 40 series card, or whatever comes out in- After the current generation. Elijah: Do you want to know the worst part? A month later, I bought a 3090. Elijah: because I sold that 3080 Ti for double what I paid for it, and bought a 3090 at MSRP. If you are looking for an upgrade from a newer card to a 30 series, do your fellow gamer a favor, and pass your old card down, either by selling it at a fair price or giving it to someone who will appreciate it. We can all do our part in this shortage by recycling or reusing our hardware, creating less e-waste and keep hardware alive and running. I don't think that necessarily is a bad message. We've always been big advocates here for trying to help reduce e-waste; which I think I was definitely channeling here, because I'm also very against e-waste and especially how companies are so careless with it; but I could have followed my own advice and not scalped it.
