Uh, is that the motherboard?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":3.44,"end_s":7.6,"text":"Absolutely. This is going to be for your NAS. NAS is the owner, or...?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":16.08,"end_s":17.68,"text":"No, NAS is a rapper.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":21.04,"end_s":26.4,"text":"No, no, not this guy. How much memory does it give you though? The storage is redundant.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":35.92,"end_s":39.2,"text":"So you've got two 18 terabyte drives.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":39.2,"end_s":42.32,"text":"A chip. That's right, and if one of them fails,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":42.32,"end_s":45.52,"text":"something bad happens. I mean, can't imagine it with you around,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":45.52,"end_s":48.32,"text":"but if something bad were to happen, all the data is still there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":49.36,"end_s":54.08,"text":"Does it self-backup somehow, or...? Don't worry, we can help them set that up, eh?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":76.24,"end_s":80.32,"text":"Wait, what? We're putting 128 gigs of memory in this thing?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":82.24,"end_s":86.96,"text":"That makes sense. Depending on the software that we're running, you can use excess memory","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":86.96,"end_s":89.04,"text":"to increase the performance of your storage array.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":90.16,"end_s":96.72,"text":"Wow, like how much? The maximum I had was 16, 128.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":96.72,"end_s":99.92,"text":"What do you do with 128? Well, you can use excess RAM","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":99.92,"end_s":102.16,"text":"to increase the performance of your storage array.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":103.92,"end_s":107.36,"text":"I don't know what that means. Make it go faster.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":107.36,"end_s":114.16,"text":"Ah, okay, I get that part. Sometimes I don't even realize that I am jargoning hard,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":114.16,"end_s":119.12,"text":"and the funny thing is, is I'm kind of teasing him right now because he did the exact same thing to me","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":119.12,"end_s":122.88,"text":"during our previous collabs, where he started going off about different","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":123.6,"end_s":127.92,"text":"electrical engineering crap, and I'm just like, Medi, dude, slow down.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":128.48,"end_s":130.88,"text":"Yeah, everyone knows different things, that's...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":131.52,"end_s":134.24,"text":"I did one unit of this in grade 12, okay?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":135.28,"end_s":139.92,"text":"Yeah, you have built too many computers. Yeah, I've built none.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":139.92,"end_s":142.8,"text":"Okay, these go in here, a little something like this.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":143.28,"end_s":148.0,"text":"Oh, there it is. Click. And you want both of these tabs to latch into place.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":148.0,"end_s":153.92,"text":"This is pretty common to see these so dim memory slots on small form factor server boards","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":153.92,"end_s":158.88,"text":"because they take up less space, but the performance is actually the same as a desktop dim,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":158.88,"end_s":161.52,"text":"assuming that they are rated for the same speeds.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":162.4,"end_s":165.76,"text":"And then we can have you take a crack at it.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":165.76,"end_s":168.96,"text":"Yeah, it shouldn't be too hard. Just...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":170.48,"end_s":174.8,"text":"I just dropped it somewhere. Let me see, okay.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":176.64,"end_s":179.52,"text":"Nice. Good. Now again. Try again. Yeah.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":181.44,"end_s":184.88,"text":"128 gigs. Oh my God. How's that for?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":184.88,"end_s":189.04,"text":"So much memory. That's beautiful. Next up, we're going to install your SSD,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":189.04,"end_s":193.04,"text":"but we are not going to install your operating system on this.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":193.04,"end_s":196.4,"text":"This is a really special SSD that uses what's called Optane,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":196.4,"end_s":199.84,"text":"which is a really high endurance kind of storage.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":199.92,"end_s":203.52,"text":"It's kind of in between storage and RAM.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":203.52,"end_s":206.8,"text":"So we're going to use this as a cache. Fast, you were saying.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":206.8,"end_s":211.6,"text":"It's fast and it's really high endurance. So we can use it as a cache for your array.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":212.56,"end_s":216.56,"text":"Endurance for like physical endurance? Like takes a beating or technically?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":216.56,"end_s":220.48,"text":"Well, technically yes. I mean, technically yes, but also no.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":220.48,"end_s":226.72,"text":"Normal storage devices that use NAND flash can only sustain a finite number of writes.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":226.72,"end_s":230.96,"text":"And then they just die. The dielectric doesn't work properly anymore.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":230.96,"end_s":235.12,"text":"And it's like these lots goes forever.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":236.16,"end_s":238.56,"text":"No, but a lot. That's good.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":240.16,"end_s":243.28,"text":"Make you go faster. That's good.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":244.32,"end_s":247.12,"text":"Okay. This goes on here. So you got to pull this screw out,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":248.48,"end_s":252.4,"text":"pop this bad boy in here, and then you're good to go. You are not putting in a screw with your hand.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":253.44,"end_s":257.36,"text":"Okay. You have, you have what is in my humble opinion,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":257.44,"end_s":260.88,"text":"the world's finest ratcheting magnetic screwdriver.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":260.88,"end_s":265.12,"text":"So what you do, you just pick up your screw. Ah, I thought the screw wasn't.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":265.12,"end_s":268.24,"text":"Put that on there. Steel. Okay.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":268.24,"end_s":271.92,"text":"There you go. And then I recommend using the knurling.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":275.52,"end_s":279.84,"text":"How hard do I have to go? No, that's good. These are going to be redundant boot drives.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":279.84,"end_s":284.0,"text":"So these can go away from that. So that's just for, what is that for again?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":284.64,"end_s":288.56,"text":"This right here? No, this thing. Caching. Caching. Make you go faster.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":289.28,"end_s":292.72,"text":"This is slow. So when we want to pull data off of the system,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":292.72,"end_s":297.12,"text":"especially if it's something that was recently accessed, or frequently accessed,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":297.12,"end_s":301.04,"text":"it'll pull it off here at the first access, and then dump it onto here,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":301.04,"end_s":306.08,"text":"where it can be accessed extremely rapidly. So for example, a video that you're working on right now,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":306.64,"end_s":311.52,"text":"is very likely to end up on your cache. So one stage above the slow drive,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":311.52,"end_s":314.32,"text":"but below the ramp, I guess. Exactly.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":314.88,"end_s":318.72,"text":"Okay, I think I'm getting it. What's the learning curve of using all these?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":318.72,"end_s":322.08,"text":"I hope it's not too hard for my aged brain.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":322.08,"end_s":325.76,"text":"No, we'll set it up for you, so that this just shows up on your computer","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":325.76,"end_s":330.56,"text":"as a drive letter. This thing, right? So this could just be the Medi drive.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":330.56,"end_s":334.32,"text":"Oh no, you don't see any of the caching layers or anything like that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":334.88,"end_s":338.96,"text":"Like if I want to pull something in there, it automatically goes in there and then...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":338.96,"end_s":342.96,"text":"It's just auto magic. Yeah. No, no, we wouldn't do that to you.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":342.96,"end_s":347.2,"text":"This is a really cool case from Jon's bow. It's the N3. It's super small.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":347.2,"end_s":353.44,"text":"I think it looks flippin' awesome. And it can fit up to eight hard drives","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":353.44,"end_s":357.12,"text":"in the default configuration. So if you ever found that 18 terabytes wasn't enough,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":357.12,"end_s":360.32,"text":"you could go up to... Oh lord.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":361.28,"end_s":365.6,"text":"Eight times 18? Not quite, because we need some redundancy.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":365.6,"end_s":370.0,"text":"You probably wouldn't run in a mirror, so you wouldn't take away half of your storage","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":370.0,"end_s":374.08,"text":"in the event of failure. Yeah, so six times 18.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":374.08,"end_s":377.28,"text":"That's what's that. So about 100 terabytes comfortably.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":379.12,"end_s":382.16,"text":"102. Yeah, but there's some overhead.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":383.6,"end_s":386.88,"text":"So 100-ish, I will say. What do you think?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":386.88,"end_s":390.56,"text":"You need 100 terabytes of storage? That's too much right now.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":390.56,"end_s":393.6,"text":"I'm backing up in a one terabyte external hard drive.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":393.6,"end_s":397.44,"text":"So 100 terabytes would be way beyond my...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":398.4,"end_s":401.04,"text":"Actually, now that I'm not gonna delete my videos,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":402.48,"end_s":405.6,"text":"maybe I can make use of it. All right.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":406.24,"end_s":407.2,"text":"Wait, why am I doing this?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":409.84,"end_s":414.0,"text":"Fine, I'll do it. I have this thing where I reflexively","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":414.0,"end_s":417.68,"text":"start building computers when they're in front of me. I have to control myself.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":417.68,"end_s":420.08,"text":"Yeah, it's my stuff. I build it.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":421.36,"end_s":425.44,"text":"Maybe you should build it. Yeah, I think we both have the same problem.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":425.44,"end_s":431.36,"text":"It's a NAS. It's a NAS computer. But you can't play Tetris on it, can you?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":431.36,"end_s":435.68,"text":"I mean, you could if you really wanted to. Yeah, sure, why not? Oh, I'm getting more computers.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":435.68,"end_s":440.24,"text":"That's nice. What color would you like for your accents on your fans?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":441.2,"end_s":442.72,"text":"Do I look like a person who cares?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":444.64,"end_s":448.56,"text":"Just put whatever. I'm gonna go with electric yellow.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":448.56,"end_s":451.92,"text":"Electric yellow, right? Okay. This is gonna go in the top.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":452.64,"end_s":456.72,"text":"I don't know. Where does it go? Ah, here, I'll help you.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":456.72,"end_s":460.0,"text":"Okay, first we'll get, yeah, all the cables. I have to take the screws out too, huh?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":460.0,"end_s":465.36,"text":"There are some screws in there. Oh, are they in there? Yeah. Oh, okay, yeah. I'm gonna try to keep everything organized today.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":465.36,"end_s":469.12,"text":"And it's going to happen. One fan prepped.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":469.92,"end_s":473.2,"text":"So I took four screws out. Hopefully that's all I needed.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":474.48,"end_s":478.72,"text":"Yep. Now you just line up the rear I.O. of the motherboard.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":478.72,"end_s":483.6,"text":"All right, right there with the rear I.O. plate that Jake looks like he already put in for you at the back.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":484.32,"end_s":487.76,"text":"I have never touched this before. Ah, yes. Yes, we do that thing.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":487.76,"end_s":491.04,"text":"Just fans? Yeah, we have a power supply. Don't worry, don't worry. I got you.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":491.04,"end_s":493.36,"text":"I got you. Do I get to zap him if he screws up?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":494.64,"end_s":497.76,"text":"Is that the rules? Oh, well, that's in there and everything.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":497.76,"end_s":502.08,"text":"Now you just plug it in? Yeah, sure. Okay, do be careful though.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":502.88,"end_s":506.08,"text":"That one is fine. So that's your front panel connector,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":506.08,"end_s":509.12,"text":"which is probably this. Yes, that just plugs in there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":509.92,"end_s":514.0,"text":"Very nice. It's the block style. So we don't have to do all the individual little wires.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":514.0,"end_s":519.2,"text":"There's like three different blocks, which block you just decide you want that block,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":519.2,"end_s":522.48,"text":"but it's missing a holder. It's not going to go in. Oh, wait, is that the audio?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":523.2,"end_s":527.28,"text":"Hold on, what are you holding? I thought you were holding the front panel. I swear you were holding this one a second.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":527.28,"end_s":528.32,"text":"No, it was that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":530.4,"end_s":534.88,"text":"Okay, well, that one goes there. Yeah. Okay, good. Yeah, if I need it, I can unhide it later.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":534.88,"end_s":538.08,"text":"It doesn't matter. Okay, oh, okay. You know how to hide or unhide an SSID?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":538.08,"end_s":541.84,"text":"Yes, I am an electrical engineer, right? That doesn't mean you never touch software.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":541.84,"end_s":544.08,"text":"Yeah, Linus. I've touched stuff.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":546.0,"end_s":547.76,"text":"He's touched me. It hurts.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":549.92,"end_s":553.44,"text":"Where does this thing? Oh, be very careful with that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":553.44,"end_s":557.92,"text":"This goes here, right? Oh, God. What? What's wrong? These pins are super thin and fragile.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":557.92,"end_s":561.44,"text":"Just don't mash them because it's a little... I've dealt with fragile stuff before,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":561.44,"end_s":564.48,"text":"and I've broken them, but I've dealt with them.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":566.48,"end_s":570.56,"text":"There you go. I don't think this motherboard is going to have onboard audio.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":570.56,"end_s":575.04,"text":"So I think there's going to be nothing to plug in. What is onboard audio? The motherboard is going to talk to you or something?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":575.92,"end_s":578.32,"text":"Well, no, it's like sound. You know?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":578.96,"end_s":579.6,"text":"Yeah, what? Like...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":584.0,"end_s":587.12,"text":"You're getting better at singing it. Yeah, there's no sound card on this motherboard.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":587.12,"end_s":590.72,"text":"Right. Okay, so it doesn't have a speaker internally.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":590.72,"end_s":595.2,"text":"It does have a speaker internally, but it doesn't have a speaker externally.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":595.2,"end_s":597.76,"text":"You can't hook up speakers to it. Oh, right. No music.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":599.12,"end_s":604.8,"text":"So I can play music internally, you say? No, it just beep when it turns on.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":604.8,"end_s":608.72,"text":"In fact, it might not even have that. It's not even a speaker. That's like a buzzer or something.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":608.72,"end_s":612.0,"text":"Yeah. Well, I mean, the header says speaker. Okay.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":612.0,"end_s":615.6,"text":"So I can plug it there, huh? I think you can actually make it make music,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":615.6,"end_s":619.68,"text":"but it's the whole thing. Why is it nas though? It doesn't need to play music.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":619.68,"end_s":623.2,"text":"Exactly. Yes, perfect. What was the point of being able to play Tetris on it","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":623.2,"end_s":625.2,"text":"and not being able to hear the Tetris music?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":626.56,"end_s":629.6,"text":"I didn't say there was a point. You asked if it can play Tetris. I told you yes.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":631.2,"end_s":633.84,"text":"It's a shame not to use all the capabilities of your","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":634.4,"end_s":637.76,"text":"nas, I guess. You've got some fans to put in.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":639.68,"end_s":642.8,"text":"And they're going to go right there. You're going to need to move it.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":642.8,"end_s":647.28,"text":"Oh, dang it. I did the thing. I did the thing where I try and be all tidy and fancy","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":647.92,"end_s":651.36,"text":"and keep everything together. And I forgot to take the screws out of the stupid","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":651.36,"end_s":654.64,"text":"accessory package. Now I got to pull them all back apart. Okay, hold on.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":654.64,"end_s":658.72,"text":"Where's the hardware for the case? Maybe it comes with fan screws and I don't have to do that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":661.04,"end_s":661.44,"text":"Come on.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":664.8,"end_s":670.0,"text":"Those are handles so that you can easily slide your drives out.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":671.04,"end_s":674.8,"text":"Neat, right? Drive handles.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":674.8,"end_s":676.8,"text":"Yeah. Oh, nice.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":677.84,"end_s":681.36,"text":"I do need the screws. It's only for one fan, right?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":681.36,"end_s":685.52,"text":"Yes. I mean, you can put it up to four fans with four screws.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":685.52,"end_s":688.64,"text":"It's just how many screws you want to put into the fan.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":689.44,"end_s":694.24,"text":"Okay, now this is a bad habit. You've got your bit over here.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":694.24,"end_s":696.32,"text":"You want to use that bit storage. Oh, yeah.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":697.44,"end_s":700.8,"text":"There you go. That's got your little bit carousel and everything.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":700.8,"end_s":704.24,"text":"Anyway, sorry, I'm just getting you the right bit. It drives me crazy.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":704.24,"end_s":708.64,"text":"Did I put it the right way? Oh, no, actually. The yellow goes to the other side?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":708.64,"end_s":711.84,"text":"No, no. Okay, yes, that was right. We want to use these as an exhaust.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":711.84,"end_s":714.88,"text":"So we're pulling fresh air into the front and blowing them out there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":714.88,"end_s":717.84,"text":"But I would like to have the fan leads.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":718.64,"end_s":722.16,"text":"Why are you removing it with your hand again? It wasn't stuck in there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":722.72,"end_s":727.6,"text":"So what, where does it go? What do I do? Just if you could have the lead facing down.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":727.6,"end_s":730.96,"text":"Ah, that's all. All right, I've got another set of screws for you.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":730.96,"end_s":735.2,"text":"These packages are horrible. I don't know what Noctua uses to make their plastic bags,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":735.2,"end_s":736.32,"text":"but it's indestructible.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":738.32,"end_s":740.32,"text":"Give me that, you little... Like, look at...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":741.84,"end_s":744.64,"text":"There you go. Oh, well, he did do that very quickly.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":745.6,"end_s":749.28,"text":"Okay. How many NAS are we building? Just one, right?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":750.16,"end_s":754.08,"text":"How many NAS do you think you're getting? I don't know. I don't know what setup it's going to be.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":755.92,"end_s":759.6,"text":"You're the Santa. How many NAS is that am I getting?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":760.48,"end_s":761.76,"text":"Hate to break it to you, but...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":763.6,"end_s":766.0,"text":"Santa's not real. What?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":768.8,"end_s":770.8,"text":"That's the only reason I moved to North America.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":776.08,"end_s":779.44,"text":"Yeah, that's actually something that doesn't get talked about much. Santa's Canadian.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":780.32,"end_s":783.92,"text":"Exactly, North Poland stuff, right? Just saying. Why do you think his outfit is red and white?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":783.92,"end_s":787.12,"text":"It's actually because of Coke. Yeah, but, you know, whatever.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":788.4,"end_s":792.32,"text":"Other more different CPU connector. That's the power supply.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":792.32,"end_s":796.88,"text":"You better believe it. Isn't it amazing how small power supplies have gotten?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":796.88,"end_s":799.76,"text":"This is 750 watts. Oh, wow. Yeah.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":801.04,"end_s":803.2,"text":"I remember back in my day, they were like...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":804.4,"end_s":811.76,"text":"Exactly. This is SFX. So this is a super compact power supply intended for small form factor machines like this.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":812.72,"end_s":816.88,"text":"And it uses modular connectors, so we can only attach the ones that we want,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":816.88,"end_s":820.48,"text":"which means all the other ones aren't just going to sit in here impeding airflow,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":820.48,"end_s":824.4,"text":"collecting dust, all that ugly stuff. Hopefully we are reusing those extra cables, no?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":825.2,"end_s":829.12,"text":"Recycling them or whatever. You might. Feel free to reuse them.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":829.12,"end_s":833.6,"text":"Well, in case we ever upgrade something in our computer, we might need the other cables.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":833.6,"end_s":839.12,"text":"Oh, I see. And if we didn't have modular ones like this, they would all be pre-attached, so they would be equally wasted.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":839.92,"end_s":844.8,"text":"Okay. Yes, scissors somewhere. I was actually, yeah, looking for the same things.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":844.8,"end_s":846.24,"text":"I'm not using... Yo, you could use that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":848.4,"end_s":851.04,"text":"Linus, you get a... Oh, f***.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":852.08,"end_s":855.76,"text":"What a dork. What a dork. I can't even...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":855.76,"end_s":859.52,"text":"I can't even give you s*** more after the number of times I've needed it though.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":860.16,"end_s":863.44,"text":"You just use it all the time. Oh, yeah.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":863.44,"end_s":868.88,"text":"He gets to hand this to me with that look on his face at least once a week these days.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":868.88,"end_s":874.72,"text":"I'm just throwing a little bit of double-sided thermal adhesive on that octane drive.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":874.72,"end_s":878.64,"text":"They can get a little bit on the hot side, especially when they're pulling caching duty.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":879.2,"end_s":884.08,"text":"So I'm just gonna put that on there, and then I'm gonna throw a cute little heat sink on here.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":884.72,"end_s":888.48,"text":"This is like building a computer with my children, except they're much larger.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":890.88,"end_s":894.32,"text":"No, I'm kidding. And also, you know, they're electrical engineers.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":895.84,"end_s":898.08,"text":"There we go. Don't crack my hard...","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":898.96,"end_s":902.48,"text":"What is it called? The hard drive? Yeah. Well, they're hard.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":902.48,"end_s":908.72,"text":"They can't break. So if you're not using audio, why don't we just unplug this thing and throw it in the pile of unused cables?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":908.72,"end_s":912.56,"text":"Yeah, we could do that. Sometimes they're not detachable from the front, but this one sure is.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":913.12,"end_s":916.48,"text":"Oh, if you pull hard enough, I'm sure. Hello, buddy.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":916.48,"end_s":919.6,"text":"Wait! Isn't there any keys or something?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":919.6,"end_s":921.92,"text":"It should be detachable. Seriously?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":923.04,"end_s":925.76,"text":"Buddy, let's just put it there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":927.36,"end_s":930.8,"text":"That's a strange connector. There you go. Oh, it broke.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":931.36,"end_s":934.64,"text":"We broke one of the cables. It's fine.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":935.2,"end_s":939.52,"text":"Why don't we just break the whole thing? Well, I mean, sure, yeah, it sure does.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":940.24,"end_s":943.52,"text":"What? It doesn't matter. You can just leave it hanging here.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":943.52,"end_s":946.96,"text":"Are you sure it's not gonna short anything in there? Yeah, yeah, yeah, because it's not connected to anything.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":947.52,"end_s":953.44,"text":"Yeah. Yeah, it gets no power. So this is the client side.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":953.44,"end_s":956.56,"text":"Sorry, I only know computer lingo. This is the source.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":956.56,"end_s":962.56,"text":"This is the destination of the electrons. Electrons go the reverse direction of the current flow, though.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":964.64,"end_s":969.76,"text":"And it's probably AC anyway. No, no, it would be, well, no, because it's just,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":969.76,"end_s":973.12,"text":"it's whatever a three and a half millimeter jack would be.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":973.12,"end_s":976.48,"text":"It's an audio signal. It's AC, yes. It goes both ways.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":977.2,"end_s":980.24,"text":"But I thought it's, oh, hold on, let me think.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":981.84,"end_s":986.8,"text":"I'll be honest with you. I never, does current even flow?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":988.16,"end_s":991.76,"text":"In an audio application?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":992.72,"end_s":998.08,"text":"In audio application? Yeah, there's a, like, it's going to like a headset or something, right?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":998.08,"end_s":1001.36,"text":"It's driving the speaker. So there is current, yes. Yeah, okay, all right.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1001.36,"end_s":1005.52,"text":"Leave that out. I guess any one of these is fine, right?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1006.64,"end_s":1012.48,"text":"Uh, yes, anywhere it fits, it sits. Can it do it now or do it later?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1012.48,"end_s":1015.28,"text":"I say go for it. What is this? Have fun. Tiny thing.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1016.08,"end_s":1021.2,"text":"What is it for the fans? That's for the fan, yeah. We can connect those now if we want.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1021.2,"end_s":1024.88,"text":"Oh, I have to unscrew this. We need more screwdrivers.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1024.88,"end_s":1026.96,"text":"Should I bring my own? Oh, no, here you're good.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1028.4,"end_s":1033.44,"text":"You sure? You don't want it? Um, I mean, I want it eventually, but I can plug in these fans.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1033.44,"end_s":1035.52,"text":"I think that's as good as the cable management is getting there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1037.44,"end_s":1042.48,"text":"And that thing goes. I would actually probably orient that.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1043.04,"end_s":1046.32,"text":"Oh, it's like that, right? Unless you want to flip that around.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1046.32,"end_s":1051.28,"text":"Yeah, I might want to flip that the other way around. Here, I'm just going to take, I'm just going to take this out first.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1052.72,"end_s":1056.0,"text":"I think I am. What are we taking out? This bracket.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1059.12,"end_s":1061.6,"text":"You can't put it back afterward. Yeah, you can.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1062.4,"end_s":1067.28,"text":"Sure, why not? Oh, okay. So the bottom side is barely connected.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1067.28,"end_s":1070.64,"text":"Oh, one side. Oh man, I wish I had the shaft extension.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1070.64,"end_s":1073.84,"text":"I left it on set yesterday and it would be absolutely perfect for this.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1074.72,"end_s":1076.24,"text":"I can't get in there. I'll just use this.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1078.16,"end_s":1079.76,"text":"Look at that tiny thing. What?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1082.8,"end_s":1085.84,"text":"Oops. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me that,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1085.84,"end_s":1088.96,"text":"I could start a screwdriver company. Don't drop my computers.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1089.92,"end_s":1093.28,"text":"I'm not going to drop the computer. It's going to be fine.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1094.0,"end_s":1098.64,"text":"It says everything is good. And a bit slightly less power draw.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1099.84,"end_s":1101.68,"text":"Yeah, everything is better.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1103.36,"end_s":1107.68,"text":"I hear something about snooping though. Somebody's snooping on my network or something?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1107.68,"end_s":1115.68,"text":"No, it just means that your new Wi-Fi devices support the funky stuff that TELUS does to get","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1115.68,"end_s":1121.36,"text":"their little TV boxes to run over Wi-Fi, but not your regular Wi-Fi in a nutshell.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1122.16,"end_s":1125.28,"text":"So we don't need the TELUS. I hope some of you out there understand what he's doing.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1126.64,"end_s":1129.04,"text":"Sorry? I said whatever doesn't matter. Close enough.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1130.16,"end_s":1132.4,"text":"Okay, it's not technically proprietary.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1134.4,"end_s":1138.24,"text":"If that's what you were coming over here to correct. Something like that. We have something.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1138.24,"end_s":1144.0,"text":"Oh crap. There you go. This is what happens when I'm sitting over here working on stuff in parallel","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1144.0,"end_s":1147.04,"text":"while someone else builds the computer. We haven't actually put the cooler on yet.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1148.24,"end_s":1151.52,"text":"I take it out. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Hold on.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1151.52,"end_s":1154.16,"text":"I forget how the mounting mechanism works for this one. Give me a sec.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1154.8,"end_s":1158.16,"text":"Back plate. Uh-oh. Do we have to take the whole thing out?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1158.16,"end_s":1161.36,"text":"Well, maybe not. I did tell you that earlier. Yeah, you certainly do.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1161.36,"end_s":1167.28,"text":"Oh crap. They're long posts. 100% you do. This is what happens when you kind of team up and do things.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1167.28,"end_s":1170.4,"text":"You end up with a lot of cooks in the kitchen. You're saying it's my fault?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1170.96,"end_s":1173.44,"text":"I am saying that we are a team.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1174.8,"end_s":1177.12,"text":"He's saying it's your fault or our fault. Yes.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1180.24,"end_s":1183.84,"text":"Wait, you guys are using our cable management stuff, right? Yeah, that's the goal.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1183.84,"end_s":1188.48,"text":"Okay, good. Because we have new cable management products that are flipping awesome.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1189.12,"end_s":1194.24,"text":"And we are using your house. I could use some of those. Yeah, we're using your house as a showcase for them.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1194.24,"end_s":1197.68,"text":"Oh. Good job, Elijah. You're still in time out.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1199.68,"end_s":1203.04,"text":"It's just hand tight or do I have to?","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1203.04,"end_s":1206.16,"text":"I usually give these just another eighth of a turn.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1206.16,"end_s":1212.0,"text":"Um, no, that's okay. Oh, okay, apparently Andy's just going to answer your door.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1213.76,"end_s":1219.04,"text":"You know, here's something I'd like to know. Hold on, before you put that on, our magnet is super strong,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1219.04,"end_s":1222.96,"text":"but can it go through a bit this long? Not on something that heavy, that's for sure.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1222.96,"end_s":1228.64,"text":"I feed it a little bit, but yeah. I can do a regular screw.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1228.64,"end_s":1231.12,"text":"Oh, that's cool. Yeah, but barely. Your magnet is strong.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1232.16,"end_s":1235.12,"text":"Barely. It's in there. It's in the box. Oh, well, there's your problem right there.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1235.76,"end_s":1240.0,"text":"Found it? Uh, yeah, oh yeah, I got it. That's just, I remember dropping another one in there,","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1240.0,"end_s":1242.96,"text":"and so I was looking for that one too, since I was at it. Uh, yeah.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1243.52,"end_s":1244.48,"text":"I don't need that. Well, that's fine.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1249.44,"end_s":1253.44,"text":"We have a shaft extension now that would make it so that you could have like a second magnet","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0},{"start_s":1254.4,"end_s":1257.76,"text":"so that it would still be strong. Maybe we should break for lunch.","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0}],"full_text":"Usually, you start with the motherboard. Uh, is that the motherboard? Absolutely. This is going to be for your NAS. Origin sponsored this video, so they sent over a sick gaming editing PC. You don't have to worry about any of that. NAS is the owner, or...? No, NAS is a rapper. No, no, not this guy. You will be able to keep all the original quality footage in case you ever need to refer back to another video, or if you have any important documents. The way these work... How much memory does it give you though? The storage is redundant. So you've got two 18 terabyte drives. A chip. That's right, and if one of them fails, something bad happens. I mean, can't imagine it with you around, but if something bad were to happen, all the data is still there. Does it self-backup somehow, or...? It self is redundant, but redundancy is not a backup. So it's still really important to take anything that is critical to your happiness and health and well-being, like any tax information or business documents, and synchronize those to a cloud backup service or another machine off-site. Okay, I have to learn that, I guess. Don't worry, we can help them set that up, eh? Wait, what? We're putting 128 gigs of memory in this thing? That makes sense. Depending on the software that we're running, you can use excess memory to increase the performance of your storage array. Wow, like how much? The maximum I had was 16, 128. What do you do with 128? Well, you can use excess RAM to increase the performance of your storage array. I don't know what that means. Make it go faster. Ah, okay, I get that part. Sometimes I don't even realize that I am jargoning hard, and the funny thing is, is I'm kind of teasing him right now because he did the exact same thing to me during our previous collabs, where he started going off about different electrical engineering crap, and I'm just like, Medi, dude, slow down. Yeah, everyone knows different things, that's... I did one unit of this in grade 12, okay? Yeah, you have built too many computers. Yeah, I've built none. Okay, these go in here, a little something like this. Oh, there it is. Click. And you want both of these tabs to latch into place. This is pretty common to see these so dim memory slots on small form factor server boards because they take up less space, but the performance is actually the same as a desktop dim, assuming that they are rated for the same speeds. And then we can have you take a crack at it. Yeah, it shouldn't be too hard. Just... I just dropped it somewhere. Let me see, okay. Nice. Good. Now again. Try again. Yeah. 128 gigs. Oh my God. How's that for? So much memory. That's beautiful. Next up, we're going to install your SSD, but we are not going to install your operating system on this. This is a really special SSD that uses what's called Optane, which is a really high endurance kind of storage. It's kind of in between storage and RAM. So we're going to use this as a cache. Fast, you were saying. It's fast and it's really high endurance. So we can use it as a cache for your array. Endurance for like physical endurance? Like takes a beating or technically? Well, technically yes. I mean, technically yes, but also no. Normal storage devices that use NAND flash can only sustain a finite number of writes. And then they just die. The dielectric doesn't work properly anymore. And it's like these lots goes forever. No, but a lot. That's good. Make you go faster. That's good. Okay. This goes on here. So you got to pull this screw out, pop this bad boy in here, and then you're good to go. You are not putting in a screw with your hand. Okay. You have, you have what is in my humble opinion, the world's finest ratcheting magnetic screwdriver. So what you do, you just pick up your screw. Ah, I thought the screw wasn't. Put that on there. Steel. Okay. There you go. And then I recommend using the knurling. How hard do I have to go? No, that's good. These are going to be redundant boot drives. So these can go away from that. So that's just for, what is that for again? This right here? No, this thing. Caching. Caching. Make you go faster. This is slow. So when we want to pull data off of the system, especially if it's something that was recently accessed, or frequently accessed, it'll pull it off here at the first access, and then dump it onto here, where it can be accessed extremely rapidly. So for example, a video that you're working on right now, is very likely to end up on your cache. So one stage above the slow drive, but below the ramp, I guess. Exactly. Okay, I think I'm getting it. What's the learning curve of using all these? I hope it's not too hard for my aged brain. No, we'll set it up for you, so that this just shows up on your computer as a drive letter. This thing, right? So this could just be the Medi drive. Oh no, you don't see any of the caching layers or anything like that. Like if I want to pull something in there, it automatically goes in there and then... It's just auto magic. Yeah. No, no, we wouldn't do that to you. This is a really cool case from Jon's bow. It's the N3. It's super small. I think it looks flippin' awesome. And it can fit up to eight hard drives in the default configuration. So if you ever found that 18 terabytes wasn't enough, you could go up to... Oh lord. Eight times 18? Not quite, because we need some redundancy. You probably wouldn't run in a mirror, so you wouldn't take away half of your storage in the event of failure. Yeah, so six times 18. That's what's that. So about 100 terabytes comfortably. 102. Yeah, but there's some overhead. So 100-ish, I will say. What do you think? You need 100 terabytes of storage? That's too much right now. I'm backing up in a one terabyte external hard drive. So 100 terabytes would be way beyond my... Actually, now that I'm not gonna delete my videos, maybe I can make use of it. All right. Wait, why am I doing this? Fine, I'll do it. I have this thing where I reflexively start building computers when they're in front of me. I have to control myself. Yeah, it's my stuff. I build it. Maybe you should build it. Yeah, I think we both have the same problem. It's a NAS. It's a NAS computer. But you can't play Tetris on it, can you? I mean, you could if you really wanted to. Yeah, sure, why not? Oh, I'm getting more computers. That's nice. What color would you like for your accents on your fans? Do I look like a person who cares? Just put whatever. I'm gonna go with electric yellow. Electric yellow, right? Okay. This is gonna go in the top. I don't know. Where does it go? Ah, here, I'll help you. Okay, first we'll get, yeah, all the cables. I have to take the screws out too, huh? There are some screws in there. Oh, are they in there? Yeah. Oh, okay, yeah. I'm gonna try to keep everything organized today. And it's going to happen. One fan prepped. So I took four screws out. Hopefully that's all I needed. Yep. Now you just line up the rear I.O. of the motherboard. All right, right there with the rear I.O. plate that Jake looks like he already put in for you at the back. I have never touched this before. Ah, yes. Yes, we do that thing. Just fans? Yeah, we have a power supply. Don't worry, don't worry. I got you. I got you. Do I get to zap him if he screws up? Is that the rules? Oh, well, that's in there and everything. Now you just plug it in? Yeah, sure. Okay, do be careful though. That one is fine. So that's your front panel connector, which is probably this. Yes, that just plugs in there. Very nice. It's the block style. So we don't have to do all the individual little wires. There's like three different blocks, which block you just decide you want that block, but it's missing a holder. It's not going to go in. Oh, wait, is that the audio? Hold on, what are you holding? I thought you were holding the front panel. I swear you were holding this one a second. No, it was that. Okay, well, that one goes there. Yeah. Okay, good. Yeah, if I need it, I can unhide it later. It doesn't matter. Okay, oh, okay. You know how to hide or unhide an SSID? Yes, I am an electrical engineer, right? That doesn't mean you never touch software. Yeah, Linus. I've touched stuff. He's touched me. It hurts. Where does this thing? Oh, be very careful with that. This goes here, right? Oh, God. What? What's wrong? These pins are super thin and fragile. Just don't mash them because it's a little... I've dealt with fragile stuff before, and I've broken them, but I've dealt with them. There you go. I don't think this motherboard is going to have onboard audio. So I think there's going to be nothing to plug in. What is onboard audio? The motherboard is going to talk to you or something? Well, no, it's like sound. You know? Yeah, what? Like... You're getting better at singing it. Yeah, there's no sound card on this motherboard. Right. Okay, so it doesn't have a speaker internally. It does have a speaker internally, but it doesn't have a speaker externally. You can't hook up speakers to it. Oh, right. No music. So I can play music internally, you say? No, it just beep when it turns on. In fact, it might not even have that. It's not even a speaker. That's like a buzzer or something. Yeah. Well, I mean, the header says speaker. Okay. So I can plug it there, huh? I think you can actually make it make music, but it's the whole thing. Why is it nas though? It doesn't need to play music. Exactly. Yes, perfect. What was the point of being able to play Tetris on it and not being able to hear the Tetris music? I didn't say there was a point. You asked if it can play Tetris. I told you yes. It's a shame not to use all the capabilities of your nas, I guess. You've got some fans to put in. And they're going to go right there. You're going to need to move it. Oh, dang it. I did the thing. I did the thing where I try and be all tidy and fancy and keep everything together. And I forgot to take the screws out of the stupid accessory package. Now I got to pull them all back apart. Okay, hold on. Where's the hardware for the case? Maybe it comes with fan screws and I don't have to do that. Come on. Those are handles so that you can easily slide your drives out. Neat, right? Drive handles. Yeah. Oh, nice. I do need the screws. It's only for one fan, right? Yes. I mean, you can put it up to four fans with four screws. It's just how many screws you want to put into the fan. Okay, now this is a bad habit. You've got your bit over here. You want to use that bit storage. Oh, yeah. There you go. That's got your little bit carousel and everything. Anyway, sorry, I'm just getting you the right bit. It drives me crazy. Did I put it the right way? Oh, no, actually. The yellow goes to the other side? No, no. Okay, yes, that was right. We want to use these as an exhaust. So we're pulling fresh air into the front and blowing them out there. But I would like to have the fan leads. Why are you removing it with your hand again? It wasn't stuck in there. So what, where does it go? What do I do? Just if you could have the lead facing down. Ah, that's all. All right, I've got another set of screws for you. These packages are horrible. I don't know what Noctua uses to make their plastic bags, but it's indestructible. Give me that, you little... Like, look at... There you go. Oh, well, he did do that very quickly. Okay. How many NAS are we building? Just one, right? How many NAS do you think you're getting? I don't know. I don't know what setup it's going to be. You're the Santa. How many NAS is that am I getting? Hate to break it to you, but... Santa's not real. What? That's the only reason I moved to North America. Yeah, that's actually something that doesn't get talked about much. Santa's Canadian. Exactly, North Poland stuff, right? Just saying. Why do you think his outfit is red and white? It's actually because of Coke. Yeah, but, you know, whatever. Other more different CPU connector. That's the power supply. You better believe it. Isn't it amazing how small power supplies have gotten? This is 750 watts. Oh, wow. Yeah. I remember back in my day, they were like... Exactly. This is SFX. So this is a super compact power supply intended for small form factor machines like this. And it uses modular connectors, so we can only attach the ones that we want, which means all the other ones aren't just going to sit in here impeding airflow, collecting dust, all that ugly stuff. Hopefully we are reusing those extra cables, no? Recycling them or whatever. You might. Feel free to reuse them. Well, in case we ever upgrade something in our computer, we might need the other cables. Oh, I see. And if we didn't have modular ones like this, they would all be pre-attached, so they would be equally wasted. Okay. Yes, scissors somewhere. I was actually, yeah, looking for the same things. I'm not using... Yo, you could use that. Linus, you get a... Oh, f***. What a dork. What a dork. I can't even... I can't even give you s*** more after the number of times I've needed it though. You just use it all the time. Oh, yeah. He gets to hand this to me with that look on his face at least once a week these days. I'm just throwing a little bit of double-sided thermal adhesive on that octane drive. They can get a little bit on the hot side, especially when they're pulling caching duty. So I'm just gonna put that on there, and then I'm gonna throw a cute little heat sink on here. This is like building a computer with my children, except they're much larger. No, I'm kidding. And also, you know, they're electrical engineers. There we go. Don't crack my hard... What is it called? The hard drive? Yeah. Well, they're hard. They can't break. So if you're not using audio, why don't we just unplug this thing and throw it in the pile of unused cables? Yeah, we could do that. Sometimes they're not detachable from the front, but this one sure is. Oh, if you pull hard enough, I'm sure. Hello, buddy. Wait! Isn't there any keys or something? It should be detachable. Seriously? Buddy, let's just put it there. That's a strange connector. There you go. Oh, it broke. We broke one of the cables. It's fine. Why don't we just break the whole thing? Well, I mean, sure, yeah, it sure does. What? It doesn't matter. You can just leave it hanging here. Are you sure it's not gonna short anything in there? Yeah, yeah, yeah, because it's not connected to anything. Yeah. Yeah, it gets no power. So this is the client side. Sorry, I only know computer lingo. This is the source. This is the destination of the electrons. Electrons go the reverse direction of the current flow, though. And it's probably AC anyway. No, no, it would be, well, no, because it's just, it's whatever a three and a half millimeter jack would be. It's an audio signal. It's AC, yes. It goes both ways. But I thought it's, oh, hold on, let me think. I'll be honest with you. I never, does current even flow? In an audio application? In audio application? Yeah, there's a, like, it's going to like a headset or something, right? It's driving the speaker. So there is current, yes. Yeah, okay, all right. Leave that out. I guess any one of these is fine, right? Uh, yes, anywhere it fits, it sits. Can it do it now or do it later? I say go for it. What is this? Have fun. Tiny thing. What is it for the fans? That's for the fan, yeah. We can connect those now if we want. Oh, I have to unscrew this. We need more screwdrivers. Should I bring my own? Oh, no, here you're good. You sure? You don't want it? Um, I mean, I want it eventually, but I can plug in these fans. I think that's as good as the cable management is getting there. And that thing goes. I would actually probably orient that. Oh, it's like that, right? Unless you want to flip that around. Yeah, I might want to flip that the other way around. Here, I'm just going to take, I'm just going to take this out first. I think I am. What are we taking out? This bracket. You can't put it back afterward. Yeah, you can. Sure, why not? Oh, okay. So the bottom side is barely connected. Oh, one side. Oh man, I wish I had the shaft extension. I left it on set yesterday and it would be absolutely perfect for this. I can't get in there. I'll just use this. Look at that tiny thing. What? Oops. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me that, I could start a screwdriver company. Don't drop my computers. I'm not going to drop the computer. It's going to be fine. It says everything is good. And a bit slightly less power draw. Yeah, everything is better. I hear something about snooping though. Somebody's snooping on my network or something? No, it just means that your new Wi-Fi devices support the funky stuff that TELUS does to get their little TV boxes to run over Wi-Fi, but not your regular Wi-Fi in a nutshell. So we don't need the TELUS. I hope some of you out there understand what he's doing. Sorry? I said whatever doesn't matter. Close enough. Okay, it's not technically proprietary. If that's what you were coming over here to correct. Something like that. We have something. Oh crap. There you go. This is what happens when I'm sitting over here working on stuff in parallel while someone else builds the computer. We haven't actually put the cooler on yet. I take it out. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Hold on. I forget how the mounting mechanism works for this one. Give me a sec. Back plate. Uh-oh. Do we have to take the whole thing out? Well, maybe not. I did tell you that earlier. Yeah, you certainly do. Oh crap. They're long posts. 100% you do. This is what happens when you kind of team up and do things. You end up with a lot of cooks in the kitchen. You're saying it's my fault? I am saying that we are a team. He's saying it's your fault or our fault. Yes. Wait, you guys are using our cable management stuff, right? Yeah, that's the goal. Okay, good. Because we have new cable management products that are flipping awesome. And we are using your house. I could use some of those. Yeah, we're using your house as a showcase for them. Oh. Good job, Elijah. You're still in time out. It's just hand tight or do I have to? I usually give these just another eighth of a turn. Um, no, that's okay. Oh, okay, apparently Andy's just going to answer your door. You know, here's something I'd like to know. Hold on, before you put that on, our magnet is super strong, but can it go through a bit this long? Not on something that heavy, that's for sure. I feed it a little bit, but yeah. I can do a regular screw. Oh, that's cool. Yeah, but barely. Your magnet is strong. Barely. It's in there. It's in the box. Oh, well, there's your problem right there. Found it? Uh, yeah, oh yeah, I got it. That's just, I remember dropping another one in there, and so I was looking for that one too, since I was at it. Uh, yeah. I don't need that. Well, that's fine. We have a shaft extension now that would make it so that you could have like a second magnet so that it would still be strong. Yeah, I usually have these tiny magnets that I stick to the side of my screwdriver, so. Which is a valid strap. 100% valid. I'm not shaming anyone who doesn't have a strong magnetic screwdriver. You know, that works. You can also like rub a magnet on it to magnetize the shaft, assuming it's made out of a ferrous material. It's a real man retrofit everything to everything. Okay, we've got our daily allotment of toxic masculinity. That's good. This is for your CPU. All you need to do is put some thermal compound on your CPU right there, and then we're going to plug, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop. Which side is the, oh, there it is. This guy right here onto this header right there. Okay. Okay, first thermal compound though. Ever since Noctua did all black versions of their coolers. Is it open already or have you opened it somehow? Yeah, yeah, it's a twist off cap. Twist off? Yeah, usually the counter clockwise. There you go. It's funny watching two people who have a ton of experience with none of it overlapping. Like, we're going to cut a lot of stuff from this video where I ask him completely brain-dead stupid questions about things he knows a lot about, and we're going to leave in all the parts where he asks brain-dead questions about things I know about. He's not going to have that power. Because I have that lift in there at all. Just kidding. Just kidding. We're going to make neither of us look like it. Okay, hold on. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay, that's lots. Good. Yeah, yeah, no, no, it's not necessary. Okay, see now the end is messy. You have to put that cap back on. What do we do now? You put the cap back on. Should I clean it first though? I mean, I'm here, I'll do it. Clean up your messes. It's my job today. What do you want? Okay, so now you're going to take the fan off the heat sink. Just with the, yeah, pull it a little bit. It's a, yep. I don't want to damage your thing. No, no, it's your thing. Oh, great. Good. Okay, then you take that and put it on there. And the mounting pressure is going to spread out the thermal compound. Direction? Doesn't matter. Well, fan this way, that way. Yeah. This way? It doesn't matter. As long as these line up with these posts. You want these fans are blowing this way or that way? They're pulling this way, but that fan can go on in any orientation you want after the fact. Fine. So it doesn't matter. See if I care. Yeah, can't believe you've never built a computer before. This is so fun. Well, I'm having fun. Nothing is blowing up if you haven't noticed already. So you're saying that's not fun for you? I don't do it all the way. I would just. Is it even going down? Yeah. Oh yeah. Are we sure? Oh wait, no. Okay, you got to push a little harder. Yeah, there you go. Oh my god. Kind of resist the urge to help. Hold on, hold on, you're not lined up. There you go. Okay. Still not in. There we go. Got it. Screwdriver fits so well here. It seems like they made this heat sink for your screwdriver. Oh, well they did design this heat sink to fit a screwdriver down here. Yeah, but see how nicely it fits there? It's like they exactly have. I mean we did partner with them. Oh, okay. Not on that particular thing, no, but we did partner with them on a screwdriver. How tight do I make it? I just keep going until something breaks. Wait, hold on. What the hell? Hey Jake, you know how this is using the Intel holes on an AMD socket? Well, the AMD CPU is a lot higher. What did you do for mounting tension? It looks like this, it looks like this hold down is bent. Did we just? I just eyeballed it. Reefer? Speaking of reefer. What's a reefer? Don't worry about it. I'll tell you when you're older. You have a question about the... Okay, here, I'm gonna back this off and then I'm gonna put it back in at approximately what is probably right. Okay, hi Elijah. I meant to come down and talk to you about this. Yeah, okay. Because it's using that weird Intel bracket. He knows that much. Oh, okay. I kind of just eyeballed it. Yeah, I figured that out. Okay, it's quite bent. You did great. Don't worry about it. It's okay. Well, this is bent, but that was probably from you. Was it? I'm sorry. I don't think it was there before. I mean it's your computer, you can do whatever you want. Hit it. Oh, fix it. That's okay. There you go. Like new. Perfect. Normally you would just do this up the whole way, but because of the weird janky mounting mechanism on this motherboard, we're not going to do that. And if we over tighten this, we're going to flex the bottom of the socket down, potentially deforming or breaking those traces. I have personally killed motherboards like this that have sort of weird mounting mechanisms, not realizing that it was being over tightened because that's not typically how it works. It's a real bad time. All right. This should be fine though. Now? I'm really glad I noticed that. Cool. Let's go ahead and put this fan on here. On that side? Yeah, that would be a good side. You're going to want the other middle clip first though. Wow, that was really close to ruining our whole day. I don't know what happened, but whatever. Direction wise, the fan is good. Yes. Like this? Yep. It always blows toward the hub. Okay. All right. Well, back to the hub. The air is going out this way. Yeah, coming out this way. We're just going to go front to back for all the airflow in this bad boy. Go ahead. Should I cut this off first? You don't need to. Yeah, if you just put on like, if you just, here, if you plug it in first, here, I can, I can grab it. Maybe I can go sideways, huh? All right. I have to take this metal thingies out, huh? No, you got to put that one on. Here, yeah. There you go. It goes this way. No, it goes any way you want. Where does it clip here? There is nothing on top. Like that. There. You know what? That's going to smash the cable down. Is it? No, it seems fine. Fine. It's carrying 12 volt DC. Be like that. You don't care about the electronics I see. I care about electronics a lot. Set. Linus. No, it's good. It's good. Everything is in. All right. This is stressful. It'll be fine. It'll be fine. It's coming together though. Check it out. Yeah, yeah. We got our RAM, CPU, motherboard, power supply at some point. Cooler. Yeah, we're going to do the power supply now. Here. Where do you go? Oh, there you go. I hid it. I plugged in the other cable that was supposed to be plugged in. Yeah, it's really cool. I like it. I've never used this one before. How do I go about not destroying these cables? You have to push them inside. It should be fine. It should be fine. Everything should be fine. Yeah, those should be fine. Man, you must not watch our videos very often. You should see the stuff we do. I'm a delicate person. Yeah, we take like high speed signaling cables and just like put our full weight on the side of the case to like match them down and get it closed. Do you think this can hold the screw while I try to? Yeah, it's doing it. Strong magnets you have. That was one of the key design goals was to fit the strongest magnet we could in the shaft. Is it okay that the power supply switch is all the way down behind that thing? We're just going to flip it on now and then. It's always on forever? It's always on. Yeah, so there's a pass through for the power and as long as nothing's plugged in here, your power is off. You're right. When it's plugged in here, your power is on. You don't need any external switch. No, no, not necessary. I've been meaning to ask, how's your channel doing lately? Well, it's doing good. Yeah. I started uploading some shorts and they're helping. What do you find is really effective for that? I guess my mishaps help. Do you have mishaps? I mean, yeah, but I feel like they're probably not as hilarious as yours. Yeah, I mean, it is different for different people. So maybe just tell me one of the things I like to do is before I delete my footage. I'll go in and make some shorts. Yeah. And nowadays what I do is that like when I, after I finish a full length video, before I delete all my footage, I go back and make some shorts out of them. Okay. Well, you could maybe not have to delete your footage anymore because we're pretty much done. Yeah. I mean, with this probably I wouldn't have to delete them. Yeah. Let's throw these fans in the bottom here. I'll hold this and just if you want to get these plugged in. Anywhere. Fan one, fan two. I mean, anywhere as long as it's fan one and fan two. Right. There's only two places anyways. Fan one in fan two. We need baby hands for this thing. Yeah, yours. That's all we need or we need other cables too? I think we need both of them. Why does this thing have two molex ins and one SATA in? It has a SATA in? It has a SATA power. Yeah. Is it the right cable? Or that thing you were talking about. You know what? I would check the manual. You might not need. Like maybe I only need one of these because if SATA does anything on this. No, but doesn't SATA power have like three volt and whatever? Five volt? But molex doesn't. It has 12 and five. But what does a hard drive need? Doesn't it need three? 12 and five. The whole 3.3 volt SATA thing just kind of went away after it. You could probably, I mean, look at the, can you see the traces somewhat obviously? We only have two drives for now. So realistically you only need the one for now. But maybe it doesn't actually need both. Because one SATA thing can definitely handle eight hard drives. Hold on. We might be okay. Are you talking about this thing now? Yeah. No, that's that goes out from the board. No, I brought a SATA to molex adapter. Hold on. It's fine. It's fine. Don't worry. We got this. Oh, okay. I'm just checking the manual to see how many of these we need to plug in. It might be okay. No touchscreen anything. Okay. That's a major piece of feedback that I've given framework that a lot of people have given framework. At some point their plan is to do a touch screen. Oh, they have no touch screen right now. And when it happens, they'll be able to just swap it out, right? You don't need to buy a whole new laptop. Right. Yeah. I just can replace the monitor, right? But at this time, no touch. Come on, man. Everyone wants a touch screen. Although I don't have much use for it. Except Mac users. Apple, Apple insists. Apple insists that Mac users don't have touch screens. Everyone knows Apple is garbage, right? Oh, you've made some enemies here. It is garbage. It's just, I'm just stating the facts. It's not like I'm saying anything new. Mehdi's trying to throw down. Oh, yeah. I need what? What do I need? You could, with the current setup, you could add two more drives and it would still work. Are you sure? Yes. Are you sure that you couldn't add more? That I don't know. Like if, is this powering the whole rack back there? We're not sure. I'm not sure. My understanding is the reason it has two molexes is because it's powering four drives each. You know what I mean? It has more outputs on the power supply. So I can add another cable from here to there. If you get one that's specific for this power supply. Right. There's a stupid, power supply suck and they always make their cables different. Yeah, but this looks pretty standard to me. These connectors there. That's how they trick you. It looks standard. You plug a different cable in and... Does it? Yes. Yes, actually. Thanks for good content. I was going to say. I did it my first, I did it my first week here. Oh, that's what you did? Nice. I think that the one side is connected to everything, guys. I mean, if it's connected to everything then... Just test it. Yeah, we can test it. Yeah, let's test it. Here we come. Well, I mean, when we have to still plug in another thing. Because you could, no, it's easy. Yeah, you could take one and plug it in somewhere else. Yeah, and it'll spin up. Yeah. Yeah, we'll test it. I believe this uses these thumb screws. I believe. Oh, sorry, I gave you two upside down. There we go. Okay, cool. Awesome. Now, we get to figure out what this is. Ooh. What do we have there? This is a 10 gigabit per second network card. That's not going in there. Oh. He doesn't get a 10 gig network card? The NAS has, the motherboard has 10 gig. This is actually, we're adding to the computer, so that way they'll be able to do 10 gig together. Sounds like it's going to last for a while. I should see you later. Well, we need to talk about the computer before I do this. Why? Because origin talking points. Yeah, yeah, but you can just put it in there. Okay. And we'll talk about how upgradeable an origin PC is. Look, we put a network card in it. Okay. Is it every computer like that? I mean, you'd think that, but don't forget Apple. No. Yeah, Apple. Nobody talks about Apple. What are you talking about? I found what we are actually putting in here. The red board. Yeah. This is a carrier card for the drives that are going to hold your operating system. These are also going to be in RAID 1. So in the unlikely event that one of them fails, nothing happens. Everything proceeds as normal. But I will get a message that one of them is failed and I have to go replace it, I guess. Ideally, yes. Ideally. If Jake sets that up for you, then yes. This is a pretty cool board. It'll take up to two 110 millimeter M.2s. So you can get some higher capacity or high performance ones that are a little longer than the standard 80 mil. And while it doesn't have an onboard PCIe switch that allows you to just use it in any slot you want. This one requires a motherboard that supports bifurcation. They do have one like that as well. So appreciate you, StarTech. Thanks for sending this over. Thank you. Should I unscrew something? No, it's fine. Or do it. Maybe we should break for lunch."}
