But one very popular product lineup has been a 00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:17.920 little, uh, less than consistent. I'm talking of course about the iPhone, which hasn't had a 00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:23.840 very simple naming progression at all. So let's look at a bit of history and at why Apple might 00:00:23.840 --> 00:00:29.440 have made the decisions that it did. The original iPhone's name was a continuation 00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:35.840 of what Apple started when it released its iMac computer nine years prior with the i 00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:42.320 insinuating internet, internet connectivity. Wow. So it was, it was a natural fit for a phone that 00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:48.640 Apple touted as being able to access the internet seamlessly. This is just so cute in retrospect. 00:00:48.720 --> 00:00:55.440 Of course, the next iPhone wasn't simply called the iPhone two. There was no iPhone two in 2008. 00:00:55.440 --> 00:01:00.160 3g connectivity was relatively new. So Apple saw an opportunity to highlight the new model 00:01:00.160 --> 00:01:06.400 support for it by calling it the iPhone 3g, which offered much faster data speeds than the original. 00:01:06.400 --> 00:01:11.600 Apple's next device was the third iPhone, but it would have sounded kind of weird to follow the 00:01:11.600 --> 00:01:19.920 iPhone 3g up with iPhone three or iPhone 3g to final fantasy style. So instead we got the iPhone 00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:24.800 3g s, which although I've been holding this for a while, this is actually the 3g s with the s 00:01:24.800 --> 00:01:30.720 standing for speed. It's network connectivity wasn't any faster, but it had a more powerful CPU, 00:01:30.720 --> 00:01:35.120 a feature that was starting to become more important since consumers were doing more 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:40.560 with their phones. The succeeding iPhone four was named in a much more straightforward manner. 00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:45.360 After all, it was the fourth version of the iPhone. But after the success of the 3g s, 00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:51.440 the paradigm was set to use the letter s to indicate a souped up revision of a base model phone. 00:01:52.720 --> 00:01:59.680 So in 2011, we got the iPhone four s, but this time the s officially stood for Siri, 00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:02.880 as this was the first model to feature Apple's virtual assistant. 00:02:03.440 --> 00:02:07.680 Apple stuck with this tick talk cycle for the iPhone five and five s, 00:02:08.640 --> 00:02:15.680 but this is where things took a bit of turn. An interesting move for Apple, 00:02:21.440 --> 00:02:27.360 as by this point the iPhone had positioned itself as a higher end smartphone. This is also around the time when we got the first iPhone SE, which I don't have 00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:36.720 with me today, which was a much smaller and quite different internally device than the other 00:03:36.720 --> 00:03:44.240 contemporaneous models. So Apple dubbed it SE special edition. The next year we got the iPhone 00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:50.560 seven and this is a seven plus, but instead of then releasing a seven s, Apple bucked that trend 00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:58.560 and skipped right to the iPhone's eight, eight plus and 10. Here's a 10. This is where defining 00:03:58.560 --> 00:04:04.080 Apple's intent gets a little more difficult. There's been speculation that they wanted to 00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:09.600 compete with Samsung's s eight and did not want to have a lower number associated with their own 00:04:09.600 --> 00:04:13.760 device. It's been suggested that this was for iPhone's 10th anniversary, 00:04:29.760 --> 00:04:35.920 as well as to imply a reinvented iPhone with a ton of new features like face ID. 00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:42.080 They may have also taken a page out of Microsoft's book as Microsoft to skip straight from Windows 00:04:42.080 --> 00:04:48.160 eight to Windows 10 and they haven't looked back. Cool. However, unlike the C from the iPhone five C, Apple said themselves 00:05:06.640 --> 00:05:12.000 that the R took inspiration from the world of high end cars and doesn't actually stand for anything. 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.320 But that may have paid off well for them as the 10 are actually sold pretty good. 00:05:16.320 --> 00:05:20.720 I guess Apple learned not to make their phones out of plastic.
