end","speaker":null,"is_sponsor":0}],"full_text":"we've waited 10 freaking years to get the successor to the divisive steam controller and now it's here the Hy pad Wireless for steam is exactly the same oh the touch pads aren't there well everything else is the oh the the layout's different so what makes this a steam controller I'm about to tell you inside the box we have a quick start guide in Japanese uh we have our very light controller holy and our dongle which surprisingly enough is not a 2.4 gahz dongle it's a Bluetooth dongle uh more on that later also inside we have this 3 m long cable that's very long for a device like this but that's because if you want to use this as an X input controller you actually need to use it wired because this is strangely enough a d input controller if you don't know what xinput and D input are X input is the standard built around the Xbox 360 for interfacing with Xbox controllers to PC games to make it very easy for developers to use D input has mostly gone out of style it's out of a few controllers but it does support gyroscope which is a big feature that is carried over from the original steam controller let's take a look at the controller itself before we get too deep into this it's a pretty standard Xbox looking layout with asymmetrical sticks face buttons d-pad but these extra buttons that have steam specific specific functionality that we'll get to we have our shoulder buttons and our triggers those feel bad wow I have not use this controller before shooting this video and this is shockingly both uncomfortable because it's very straight edges and chap feeling it feels very much like a 2003 controller where analog triggers weren't quite all the rage yet where it's just a button press oh boy all right let's continue the exploration I didn't want to react to the button feel but it was so shockingly bad I had to on the back are some paddles those feel okay they're a little bit mushy it feels pretty even across the whole button and my fingers slide in quite nicely I think that the shape of it is not bad at all it's very light which gives at least the illusion of cheapness wow 182 G that's significantly lighter than a lot of the controllers that I've unboxed on this channel and I think it hurts the impression of this controller that there is no Rumble it just feels very cheap in the hand combined with the really underwhelming triggers d-pad that is uh wly crappy face buttons that are fine I guess I like that they really stick out of the controller but I also think that they just feel like a mushy mess oh these function buttons really suck I actually missed two programmable buttons here these are fine they're like clicky buttons I think that it is really poor placement like that you really have to to commit to pressing this so it would not be a very good in-game function to to assign yeah this is a really poor feeling controller it's not that the original steam controller felt particularly premium I like a lot of the ideas they were going for but it has some of the worst build quality of a mainstream controller maybe ever like the seams on this are so horrible so in that sense the new one's better I don't like the little mini buttons on this see feel about the same I'd say they're like similar ballpark of quality I think this looks like a nicer package but it feels just as cheap in the hand but at least it's not cutting into your palm on the sides Hy has a long history of making controllers and for a long time they made some of the best third party controllers I still have a PS1 controller that I love to use it's a great great great controller I can already tell you now this is not going to be a historic winner back to the back we have two toggles which change from a digital style response on the triggers to an analog style the travel is so short I don't really see a great purpose in this I feel like there's not enough travel for it to be a good analog trigger it kind of just is going to be a digital button press so for shooter people out there that's fine shorter TR is desirable in a lot of ways for everyone else it's going to be a really crappy one and on the other side we have a steam mode and an X input mode that basically toggles it to being a Bluetooth controller to wired you might find that some games work better with X input rather than D input pared through Steam input so it's nice to have that capabilities but the fact that it's wireless only through Bluetooth is a little bit puzzling in this day and age especially when they include an adapter this is a Bluetooth adapter and presumably we'll have to test it but you could connect other Bluetooth devices to it so that's kind of a nice bonus cuz these things even the cheap ones cost 10 bucks so that's a cool little throwi in but what we've experienced is that Bluetooth generally has worse input latency than proprietary 2.4 GHz dongles and so I'm curious to see if I can sense the input latency issues but really I think we should just try this on a computer and a steam deck after I tell you about our sponsor thanks to incog for sponsoring control other functionality luckily it also is very good in Steam Big Picture Mode and that's a little easier for us to capture so we're going to show you this functionality on the PC okay connecting this controller isn't as simple as a regular wireless controller where there's a proprietary dongle you turn it on and it works you have to go through Microsoft's painfully annoying Bluetooth pairing process I've had very bad experience with controllers keeping them paired having to unpair them repair them so I'm not super excited this is the experience you're going to have with this controller it's nice that in the seam test you have all the extra buttons that show up we haven't even talked about that let's do that right now by going into Steam Big Picture I can detect the input latency right now let's see what each of these buttons does our steam button that brings up the main menu that's pretty cool but if you pair a regular controller that has you know an Xbox button or something similar uh it does the exact same thing so that's Nifty if you're having trouble with that just disable the Xbox button in Windows and it'll work great in big picture there's your Tech tip quick menu one quick menu two um let me out I want to go home stop by way here you doing this why can't I leave is this for real on the top right we have our menu button which is going to bring up kind of game specific settings so if you want to uninstall a game bottom right we have our quick settings on the top top left we have our view button which doesn't seem to do anything but that makes sense it's give me a more specific circumstance button and then we have our pairing button it's cool I guess and I think if you were playing on a steam deck connected to a TV that'd be really useful and I actually am using Steam Big Picture more and more so I'm not against these buttons being here but I've never had an issue with my apid do 2C just hitting the center button uh to access that or assigning other buttons to that the other secret buttons on this controller is like the steam deck the thumbsticks have little capacitive touch pads that you can use to turn on and off gyro uh which is pretty nifty and I guess makes this more of a steam friendly package I'm not a huge gyro aimer but I think in the purpose of giving the best full impression of this controller I'll have to mess around with that a little bit let's see if it's working seems a little bit jittery but to be honest I don't have that much experience looking at this screen in particular so I don't know if it's always this jittery that's pretty stationary it's mostly me that's jittery then going into gam pad tester you'll have to switch to X input in order to be able to actually test the joysticks properly without just measuring based on the the numbers it gives you let's test our circularity whoa okay all right not even consistent across the two sticks left stick's got an average eror of 14.3 right stick's got an average of 19.1 not the worst I've ever seen but it is weird that there's almost a 5% difference across the two sticks you can see the corners are pushed very far beyond the bounds that's pretty normal on cheap sticks but it's a little bit underwhelming I would say Let's test our vibration ha just kidding there is none why did they why did they skip on vibration it feels like such a stupid thing to freaking skimp out on not happy this is all theoretical testing let's see maybe in game this thing is really awesome oh there should be software for this too right it is the right software Horry pad for steam yes I am connected shut the I'm connected but I that shouldn't matter I'm connected that's really annoying I am connected to this computer and you guys saw me do this testing so we know that it's working but unless I switch all the way to X input it's not going to let me do this or it's just not going to work this just really bad song software while this is restarting this is clearly for a headphone jack that is not there and that's just another disappointment piling up on a big pile of real underwhelming controller this controller is connected to this computer cuz I can control steam but uh the Hy software which we have confirmed is the correct software is not detecting this controller to fa of them this is the Japanese version of it and presumably the English speaking language software uh so maybe there's some disc connect there but oh it connected can you come over here and tell me if these sticks feel like they're different weights to you maybe the left is a little harder to push that's how I felt too yeah but it's pretty subtle but it does feel a little different yeah we've swapped over to xinput mode and it doesn't seem like we have drift issues I'm not sure if it's carrying over that dead zone there definitely is like a decent Siz Dead Zone it might be 30% so it could be doing that or it does its own little calibration for X input that is is a little bit better it's hard to tell either way it's a really imprecise stick would not recommend for anything that you need Precision for this controller would be fine if you're playing like a character action game I think the face buttons feel uh acceptable and the build quality is okay feels too cheap cuz it's light uh but none of the buttons feel great the sticks are really imprecise these triggers suck at least it's really cheap right it's $60 this thing is not a cheap controller and in a world where there is excellent 30 to $50 controllers it's really impossible to recommend this controller even for its unique features that might be attractive if you really really want gyro I would recommend jumping up to a Vader 4 it's a little bit more expensive but it's an excellent controller and it's got good gyro there is other options but finding one that does PC gyro for cheap is a little bit harder but if you're looking for just an all around gaming controller apido 2C baby that thing freaking rocks $30 uh and it gets you most of the in-game functionality that this controller does minus gyro and the few extra buttons but for a lot of people I don't think that's going to matter really disappointing cuz we've waited 10 years for the SQL to the steam controller and though this is not a steam product they have put their name on this thing and it's a all
