It's so tiny. This is it. Relative to a child's hands. And [clears throat] that doesn't stop it from being packed with incredible features, which GLet sponsored this video for us to tell you all about, including Wi-Fi 7, 2 and 1/2 gig networking on both ports, the ability to use any USB PD wall that you have kicking around in order to power it up, and tons of great travel friendly features, including a touchscreen interface, and the ability to use said touchscreen interface to quickly adjust all kinds of useful features, like toggling ling between different internet sources or toggling which VPN you're using. And of course, it runs OpenWRT and has a gig of onboard storage so you can load it up with plugins for things like ad blocking, network monitoring, custom network configurations, or even your own creations. The sky's is the limit. First, let's have a look at what's in the box. USB PD power supply, including all the various travel tips that you might need. That matters a lot more on a product like this than I would say it does on a typical wireless router. Boop. There you go. Now I'm ready to travel the world. Fun fact, by the way, we brought one of these along on our recent trip to China when we knew we were going to be broadcasting the WAN Show from there because with support for over 30 different VPN providers, well, you're bound to find one that's punching through the Great Firewall at the moment. What else we got in here? USBC to C cable, flat style Ethernet cable, both about 3 ft long in case you were curious. And that's it for the box. Let's get it out of here and let's check out the software. Oh, before I plug this in, actually, maximum 30 watts. That's not a ton. So, while this late 7 doesn't have an onboard battery, nothing would prevent you from using a PD battery bank and running this from your cabana. You could plug in via USB with a little SIM enabled cellular modem and boom, you've got an incredible little hotspot right there on the beach. Oh yeah, I haven't showed you guys the antennas yet. Aren't they cute? Look at it. What else we got here? Mode switch button. We will figure out what that does in a moment. Oh, apparently it's configurable. So, you can switch between networks, toggle which VPN you're using. The choice is yours. Very cool. Oh, reset button. You love to see it. I know it's a router and it should have a reset button, but I don't take anything for granted anymore. This is user friendly. Let's just put aside the quick start guide. I don't think we're going to need that where we're going. Connect via land. This is such a thoughtful choice for a travel router because a lot of hotel rooms these days, they don't have an Ethernet jack. So, you're going to be using the Wi-Fi. It's just a question of whether you're going to be able to add any plugins or configurations you need to it or have high-speed wired networking there in your room for you. Now, they talk about how you can have high-speed wired networking so you can stream video or conference calls or whatever else, but 2 and 1/2 gig is way overkill for that. This would be super useful for someone like a video editor. So you could have, you know, a little portable storage machine. You could have your laptop and you can have the whole thing connected crazy fast. We've done this many times when we're on the road doing coverage. All right, let's plug this bad boy in. Oh, plug the cable connecting to your computer into the LAN port. It wants me to connect to the router first. That actually makes sense, but you've got lots of options for that. Once it's set up, you can configure it via the interface over LAN or over Wi-Fi. Although I don't really recommend configuring your router over Wi-Fi because if you change Wi-Fi settings then you're disconnected. You can configure it via the phone app or you can actually change things using the touchcreen itself. But we're doing the initial setup. So I'm going to follow the dang instructions. Was bound to happen at some point on this channel. Oh dude, I don't know if I've seen that before. This just fired up. Travel king 24. Ooh, let's go. 160 MHz dynamic bandwidth. Speaking of bandwidth, they rate the Slate 7 at 688 megabit per second on the 2.4 GHz band and about 2 and a half gigabit per second on the 5 GHz band. It does not support 6 GHz. And it is worth noting that those are theoretical maximum speeds and in the real world you will not see them. All right, network guide. I really like this wizard. It just suggests, hey, how do you want this configured instead of just dumping you into the interface and having you figure it out for yourself? Do I want it as a repeater for like a hotel Wi-Fi setup or do I have a hardline connection? I have a hardline connection, so let's do it. Using a VPN can protect your privacy. Would you like to try it out? Sure, why not? This is a pretty nice slate of suggested options, including our VPN partner, PIA. We'll have a link to them down below. and they boast that they support both OpenVPN and WireGuard with their WireGuard speeds exceeding half a gigabit per second. It's a lot of performance in a small package. I'm going to go with US Seattle because I want as little additional latency as possible. I just don't want a nasty letter for my ISP. And boom, we're up. Now, let's play around with that little configurable button really quick here. Toggle button settings. Hey, here we go. VPN client connected. Okay, let's press the toggle button. And sorry, sorry, I sneeze when my VPN gets disconnected. I'm allergic to not being anonymous on the internet. Sorry. A VPN is not the beall and endall to staying anonymous on the internet. It's very, very important to understand that. But depending on the service that you're using, it might give you access to regional services that you otherwise might not have access to. It might be part of a security toolkit that helps you maintain your anonymity. Or it might just be because you're a filthy pirate and you love to sail the seven seas. What you use your VPN for is none of my business. And that's kind of the point of it. Oh well, I guess I could I could connect to it. You've got a handy dandy little Wi-Fi 7 client here. Hey, look at that. There's my client right there. I can see my IP. I can monitor my speed, my traffic. I can block it just like that. Hey, can I What can I see on the screen on the front? Oo, tap to enter. [music] Sorry, I'm about to add things a little bit here. Swipe down to return. Uh, okay. Hey, look at that. Oh, this is a cool feature. Check this out. So, there's a QR code on the front. So, you can just scan the QR code and connect that way. If you have a guest in your hotel room, they could easily get on your Wi-Fi. Guess >> it's just it's just sexy like that. That is so cool. What a handy feature. And it pops up both of your SSIDs. So this is for your preferred guests and this is for your Yeah, I really wish you'd leave. So here's slow internet guests. You love to see it. Oh, dude. I can change my VPN client. So I can be logged into my various VPNs and then I can toggle my VPN here. Ah, never have to even go in the interface. To be clear, I don't hate the interface. I got nothing against it. I just don't want to use it if I don't have to. This is so handy. Oh, I can switch to repeater mode just like that. You know, I wonder if it supports sharing your connection on the plane. This is something that I ran into recently. I actually posted on Reddit about it cuz I was having a hell of a time figuring it out. Many airlines block you from using the mobile hotspot feature of your device because that would allow you to buy just one $20 Wi-Fi pass and then use it across all your devices or all of your friends. But I did find a way around it. So maybe we can show you the solution in this Reddit post here. But I'd be very curious to know if I'd be able to use this router to share my Wi-Fi on the plane. Adgard built right in. Look at that. Wow. I'm using an ad blocker for the first time in I don't know, probably since I did the Pi Hole video. Hey, hold on. Let's reload this page. It doesn't look that different to me. Then again, this is the MSN homepage. So, no. To my knowledge, Adguard doesn't block YouTube ads anyway, so I wouldn't have expected it to. And realistically, I don't need this video taken down. So, I'm not going to get into how to block YouTube ads. Let's do our speed test. [groaning] Let's go. So, if you ever felt like you needed a casual gigabit speed wireless connection while you're, you know, chilling in your cabana, assuming that you can get that fast of an uplink to it, you can set up a guest Wi-Fi network. So, that will give them access to the internet, but not any other devices that are connected to the network. Super handy. Highly recommend setting up a guest Wi-Fi at home. There is no reason that your guest needs to be able to have any kind of network connectivity to your NAS, for instance. Oh, wow. They put MLO right in the Wi-Fi configuration header because they want you to know that it supports MLO, which increases speed and connection reliability using multiple bands at the same time with supported devices. Very cool feature. Ooh, this is cool. You've got support for both global mode for your VPN and policy mode. Policy mode allows you to selectively use your VPN for certain clients or for certain services and [music] websites. So, say for example, you didn't want your VPN to interfere with your gaming ping times. Policy mode is what you want. There's parental controls out of the box. In order to use those, you'll have to turn off network acceleration. So, it will come at a bit of a performance cost. And probably the coolest thing about the software is that Ginet has committed to supporting this thing in the long term and they boast that they have devices as old as like 10 years that are still getting security updates. This is a major concern for any network connected hardware. I mean, we've all seen those articles about hordes of zombie devices that are not getting security updates that are being used for like massive attacks on the internet. So, uh, be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Pick up a GLET router today. It could either be the Slate 7 for your travel needs or it could be one of their more home or small office home office optimized products. We're going to have all that linked down in the video description. This little bad boy is only going to set you back 150 bucks, which considering all the features and the convenient package, pretty sick. Subscribe to ShortCircuit. That'll be sick, too."}
