And over the years, I've spent countless hours amassing tens of thousands of posts across Reddit, YouTube comments, and good old-fashioned forums. >> [music] >> But with my busy schedule making videos these days, I almost never find time for it. Well, just make it a video. It's brilliant. Then I can hang out on forums answering your questions and turn it into content. But I'll have to go undercover. >> [music] >> You know, creating burner accounts is going to be a lot of work. Who needs anonymity anyway? Let's do this thing. Wow, this is factory? Buddy wants a recommendation on insulation behind in-ceiling speakers. What terrible games were you good at and maybe even loved? What's the most overrated PC accessory everyone [music] wastes money Please buy a table. What's next? Where am I going with this segue? Oh my god. To our sponsor. So you want something fast? >> [music] >> First question. Any ideas as to why I need to unplug and replug my GPU every day when I start my computer? Wow, you guys really didn't want to throw me any easy ones, hey? I guess that's why nobody has a response yet. My first thought is this poster is running quite an old platform. A 7th gen Core i7 is enough to run plenty of modern games, but that tells me that their power supply and all the other accompanying components are also quite dated. And we can confirm that down at the bottom. He's running PCI Express Gen 3. Now, that's not inherently the end of the world. PCI Express is forward and backward compatible across the generations. So his Gen 5 GPU should run just fine, but the real world doesn't always work out the same way that theories do. My first suggestion for No Organization 2011 is to update the system BIOS. This is our first line of defense against any kind of random incompatibilities. After that, we want to isolate our variables. And the first thing I would do is take the GPU out of the flaky system and put it in a known good one. If it doesn't work, well, hey, we solved the problem. We have a bad GPU and we get an RMA. >> [music] >> If it does work just fine, well, now we're back to our system where either we probably need to pick up a new power supply cuz a little on the dated side, or it may just be time to upgrade this system. We're running PCIe Gen 3 and only by eight, which means that GPU is getting just 1/4 of the bandwidth that's expecting and we're not getting the most out of it. We don't need to go to a fully modern system, but I'd say at least something with PCIe Gen 4 second hand would be a great upgrade. Hopefully the second one's easier. What's the most overrated PC accessory everyone wastes money This one's challenging, too. The obvious one is the top upvoted one here, anything RGB, but I actually disagree with that. RGB can be an accessory, but in most cases it's just a feature of an accessory. And we've gotten to the point where it usually doesn't even cost that much more, so who cares? It's not really a waste of money at that point. If I had to answer this, I would say it's got to be gaming headsets. Somehow, even though everyone knows that they suck compared to picking up a standalone microphone and then just a nice pair of headphones, they still exist. And if I go somewhere like Amazon, your top sellers list is full of either e-waste disposable plastic garbage that you're going to end up buying five times instead of just treating yourself to something nice once, or expensive gaming headsets that frankly just aren't going to sound as good either for you or for your Hello gamers. >> [music] >> And yet here we are. 4,000 people bought the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 in the last month. With that said, wireless gaming keyboards are a way bigger waste of money. I just don't think they qualify because everyone's not buying those. Wow, what a quality forum where people get >> [music] >> lots of good suggestions. Cooling for the 14900K. This is a challenge. Sorry. My bad. Signed, Intel. There is a way, though, and it's full custom water cooling. The good news is they don't actually have to buy all of the parts for a full custom loop because they already own a radiator and fans. So all we've got to do is pick up the other pieces. [music] We need a pump and reservoir and I never recommend cheaping out on that. So I like this Alphacool Eisstation VPP. It uses a D5 pump, which I had one die after 10 years and that was unusual. It's an extremely [music] reliable design. Then we just need a CPU block. I wouldn't spend a fortune on this first time around. You can always get yourself a fancy plexi nickel block later on down the line. And then we need four fittings, two [music] for the CPU and two for that pump reservoir combo. These 3/8 inch barbs should probably match what's on the radiator based on I BuyPower saying that the outer diameter of their tubing is about half an inch, which means it's either 3/8 or 5/8 and you'll just have to measure it. If it's 5/8, then just buy half inch fittings and then 5/8 inch tubing and stretch it over everything. A zip tie is a great, not to mention affordable, way to make sure that the tubing won't slip off the barb. And post. This is fun. It's not fast, but it's fun. PC has a fork in it. Okay, this is tagged meme. I have actually seen stuff come back to life after being shorted. Um I dropped a screw into a server once and I saw sparks. Holy sh What the f Holy And then that server went on to run in our server room for years afterward. There are protections built into modern boards against short circuits. Just don't count on them. Usually they die. Sometimes they might survive. Why is this coming apart? Oh my god, it's hot. Kirin4 asks, is my monitor dying? Buh. First instinct, yes. If it was your GPU, I would expect it to be smaller anomalies that are more distributed over the entire screen and I would also expect it to be exacerbated by running a heavy load, whereas this seems to happen just at the desktop. And if it was your cable, I would expect it to again be distortion all over the screen or blanking out from time to time and then coming back fully. There is good news, though. Based on these pictures, it looks like from time to time all of the pixels on the panel do light up. So the issue is probably [music] the control board or the power supply, which can be obtained on eBay if you put in the exact model number. And LTT has some convenient guides on how to replace. Sometimes it can be so hard to find the right [music] video, but I managed to find both the one where we replaced a control board and the one where we replaced a power [music] supply. And both were successful. But it can be a bit of a gamble because if you aren't successful, well, great. Now you're out all the money for a replacement monitor and all the money that you blew trying to fix your broken one. Hi. I used this thermal paste. Oh, I mean this has already been responded to hell and back. Hold on. You want to comment on that one, too? >> Yeah, just because something's replied to already doesn't necessarily mean that they did a good job. This is right that the best way to start an argument with PC builders is the correct thermal paste application. It's just that then they went on to give a method that's way more work for no reason. Then this one, I'm spreading it out. No need to complicate it, but you've complicated it. Why are you putting your finger in a plastic bag and spreading it over the heat spreader? You do not need to do that. All right, here we go. The best way to ensure that you have full coverage of thermal paste over your integrated heat spreader is to just put it on. Blob, line, happy face, I don't care. Just put some thermal paste on, apply your cooler, fully tighten it down, and it'll spread out all the thermal compound. Then take it off. Look at it, either on the bottom of the heat sink or on the CPU itself. If you've got full coverage, great. Put it back on. And if there's any spots that are dry, probably it doesn't even matter, but hey, throw a little more thermal compound on there and put it on. You're good to go. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you might get an air pocket stuck in there or anything like that. That is old wives' tale stuff. The mounting pressure for your heat sink is far too high for that to be a concern. Wow. Prepping my 590 for a water block. This is factory? That is awful. Well, there's two different answers. Number one is to use isopropyl alcohol or contact cleaner and a brush to scrub all that gunk out of there. Personally, I'm partial to using an old toothbrush because they're free. Everyone has an old toothbrush. Answer two is the cursed one. Clearly your GPU is working already and in the past we have actually run a CPU in a socket full of thermal compound. It doesn't matter. So just don't do anything. Put your new block on and go back to the blissful ignorance you had before you ever removed your stock cooler. >> [music] >> Here's an interesting one and seems to have been quite controversial already, but they want dual 140 mm intakes. Then they want a top intake and rear and top exhausts. And of course, the top response doesn't address the question at all, just talking about the RPMs, which are sort of besides the point. I agree with the top upvoted actually responding to the question post from damn I'm a dean account. [music] Don't even bother with the top fans. You're not running super power hungry hardware anyway, so [music] just have the fronts as an intake and have the back as an exhaust. Why have I been having bad 1% lows? I'll be averaging 140, but my 1% lows stay around 90. If you can recommend anything I can do to help, let me know. Oh, this first response though. You have a 14700K F and you're like, buy a better CPU. Buddy, they've got a 5070 TI. It's It's a good GPU. It's a fast GPU, but like a 14700K F is fine for that. I'm going to download this. Buy a better CPU. No, what they need to do is turn off their FPS counter. 90 FPS 1% lows? Damn. Do you know how many people would be happy to have that? Relax, [snorts] buddy. Looking to upgrade my desk mat. Any recommendations? Wait, this is from 6 months ago, you guys. It's because I'm trying to recommend a desk pad. There's a desk pad on the desk from lttstore.com. I think they probably have a mouse pad already. Why is the top upvoted response, what is that Logitech keyboard? That has nothing to do with their questions. Anyway, if you're looking for a nice desk pad, obviously we carry them at lttstore.com. There, is that what you guys wanted? Sorry for replying to you literally 6 months later. My staff made me do it. A GTX 1070 runs well, then stutters. Anyone seen a similar issue? No problems with heat. >> [music] >> No problems with running out of VRAM. GPU stops boosting. Oh, well, hold on a second. How do you know this isn't a problem with heat? You need to download yourself hardware info. There are a couple of posts already that suggest probable causes like thermal throttling or VRMs overheating, but they don't give the OP the tools to determine which one it is. If they download hardware info and then run games while that's running in the background, they can just check the maximum column to see if thermal throttling or power throttling are present on the GPU. The other thing that they don't mention is that the 1070 TI is a little on the older side. If it still runs the OP's games well enough, then that's great. Keep using it. Keep it out of the landfill and save your money. But, it's probably overdue for a thermal paste replacement. Fortunately, I know a guy who made a guide on how to do that. 10 years ago. Wow, time flies. Buddy wants a recommendation on insulation behind in-ceiling speakers. Well, let me tell you what I learned. Don't put the insulation right up against the back of the speaker. SK9592 nailed this. I have nothing to add, but a nice little upvote here. I wish I could leave two. You need a box behind your in-ceiling speakers. It both gives the speaker enough air behind it to properly vibrate and create [music] that sweet sweet audio you so crave, and it helps to isolate the speaker from the floor [music] above it, so you don't get as much sound leakage. As for the insulation in the rest of the ceiling, well, that doesn't matter. You just use whatever noise blocking insulation you were already planning to use, whether it's bats or whether it's blown in. What a helpful Redditor. >> [music] >> If only every Redditor was like SK9592. >> [music] >> Advice on next upgrade. Looking at this picture, I'm going to say acoustic treatment for your room, but how about a dining room table? Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. I'm not judging. Calcutech, I'm sure the wide lens is distorting the image, but it looks like the couches should be a lot closer to the screen. Oh my god. I get that this is r/hometheater, but like you guys are so focused on you know, what's the recommended couch distance from the screen? Please, buy a table. No, that's the real answer. Do you see their priorities here? Their house is so empty other than this like theater area. In all seriousness though, the next thing that I would do is absolutely add some acoustic treatment to that room because you're going to be getting reflections all over the place. What terrible games were you good at and maybe even loved? Me? I could almost speedrun Super Pitfall. I mean, this looks good. What makes it a terrible game? Oh, I've got one. I was really good at the Game Gear Power Rangers fighting game. I was freaking awesome at World Series Baseball, too. I only owned like three games for my Game Gear and I never really got into Sonic, so I played the crap out of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, World Series Baseball, and Lion King. But, Lion King's actually a really good game, so it doesn't count. It's so hard. Yeah, it's hard. Get good. Living in Southern Arizona and want to use outdoor radiators to get the heat out of my room. Temps outside hit 50°. Overclock.net is so hardcore. Like, build an evaporative bong cooler. That's yet another thing we technically have a guide for. As you can see, you can achieve temperatures that are well below what you can do with a cooler that relies simply on ambient cooling, but you'll have to have this next to your computer. Honestly, I think this is another example of how particular communities can kind of get tunnel vision in their responses. These are great answers to the OP's question, helping them understand how to manage thermals through deleting the CPU or using evaporative cooling. But, sometimes the OP doesn't know the right question to ask. I would actually suggest that the OP relocate their system and then use long fiber optic cables, which will probably cost them less than an elaborate water cooling setup, to reposition their gaming PC outside of that room where the sun is not beating down on them. They did say that their air conditioning is adequate for the house. It's just that that one room gets hot. The only question is how to do it, and there's two main ways. Either you can go Thunderbolt with a dock and an optical Thunderbolt cable that has the advantage of being a single cable solution to wherever your PC happens to be, but it has the disadvantage of being quite expensive, anywhere from about $500 to $700. Again though, I'm only bringing this up because they were going to build a custom water cooling setup and run it outside. That's what I'm up against for cost. So, if they don't want to spend that kind of money, the other option is to pick up an optical HDMI cable for their monitor and then run an optical USB cable and run that to a USB dock. The only thing that I'm stuck on right now is what kind of USB docking station to use. This one looks like it should work, but I have no personal experience with the Toben One brand, so I might just have to disclaim that. Whatever path you choose, I'd recommend one of these to go along. It's a cute little PC remote switch from Silverstone that gives you a little fob like for your car that will either power on or reset your computer from pretty much anywhere in your house since it uses 2.4 GHz. I have a gaming laptop called the Raider GE68HX. I want to cool it down a bit. My heat is honestly pretty good. It's averaging around 85 and it doesn't bother me much. All right. See you later. What's next? Ooh, capacitor fell off RAM. >> [snorts] >> I mean, it might still work. And I'm with Halo Elite fan. Thumbs up. Only one way to find out. Not much can go wrong. Other than a a dead thing can be dead. Next up, CPU light is on. Everything runs fine. What's the cause of this? So, this is like a like a post code, hey? Is this AI? I'm sorry that you are experiencing this issue. You could try these. This has got to be AI. Who starts every response with I'm sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Posting about cockatiels. No, I think you're real. I think you just respond like a customer support rep for some reason. I mostly agree with JCWUTF here. If everything runs fine, just let it be. But, it also wouldn't be a terrible idea to update the BIOS and [music] just see if it goes away. So, Track Medium, you might sound like AI, but I think you're on the right path. All right, water cooling residue. Here we go. It looks like they do have a little bit of particulate matter in their loop. You can see it built up on the fins down here through this accelerator plate. If I had to guess, I'd say it's some of that, but no, I wouldn't say that [music] it is dried coolant. It's hard for coolant to dry out in a water loop. The only way to remove this gunk is to take off the cover of the block, clean it out with a toothbrush. No alcohol. Okay? That looks like an acrylic top, so you are [music] going to seriously discolor it, maybe even crack it if you use alcohol to clean it, and then reassemble. I want to water cool RAM in a very high-end rig, but all top-end RAM comes with a heat spreader permanently installed. You want to water cool RAM, but soaking RAM in alcohol gives you the willies. You're going to have to stone up. I realize this may not be a popular response on r/watercooling, but you do not need to water cool your memory. Please, as someone who has water cooled RAM more than once, more than twice, just don't do it. This was fun. And probably the coolest part was how good most of the answers people were getting were. It's amazing to see the community come together and help each other, whether it's troubleshooting or configuring their next build. And like, how quickly people are responding. Like, we compiled this list, I think a few hours before I sat down here, and already a lot of them were getting really great responses.
